Citizens Oppose Latest
Spectra Pipeline Proposal
By J.D. O’Gara
Citizens are getting together
to oppose Spectra Energy’s latest
Access Northeast project
(follow project filings at www.
ferc.gov, Docket # PF16-1), a
proposal to build a 30-inch high
pressure gas pipeline 21.2 miles
through nine towns: Bellingham,
Medway, Millis, Franklin,
Norfolk, Walpole, Sharon,
Canton and Stoughton.
Last April, Spectra had
dropped plans for its Q-1 loop
of the Atlantic Bridge Project,
but activist Carolyn Barthel,
who attends church in Franklin,
says the company came back
with a bigger plan revisiting its
Access Northeast project, expanding
the loop to go a longer
distance through more towns.
“It is the same route, theoretically,”
she says. “(Spectra)
came back in spades. The
original Q-1 loop was 10 miles.
Now, it’s over 21 miles, from
Medway to Stoughton.”
This photo of Spectra Energy’s proposed Q-1 loop extension was
taken at an open house meeting Spectra held in January. The route
is part of Spectra’s Access Northeast proposal, currently filed with
the Federal Environmental Regulatory Commission (www.ferc.gov)
under docket number PF16-1. A group called the Greater Franklin
Node of 350 Massachusetts (NospectraMA.org) opposes this plan.
Barthel is involved with the
Greater Franklin Node of 350
Massachusetts, a grassroots
statewide network of climate
activists with nodes (chapters)
from the Berkshires to Cape
Cod that opposes natural gas
pipeline expansion. The group
The Irish in Franklin
Did you know…
In the spirit of St. Patrick’s
Day, Local Town Pages looked to
the Franklin Historical Society
for a little insight into Irish history
in Franklin. Mary Olsson
quickly delved into Blake’s 1878
History of Franklin. She found
that Catholicism’s arrival to the
town coincided with the arrival
of the Irish.
The first Irish families arrived
in Franklin in the late 1840s.
There were just two families in
1848. Shortly after, others, who
were employees of the Norfolk
Railroad Company settled in
Franklin.
The first Catholic Mass was
held for five worshipers by Fr.
Charles O’Reilly at the John L.
Fitzpatrick home on Medway
Road (now 316 Lincoln Street).
By 1851, there were more
Catholics, presumably Irish,
since the Italians weren’t to arrive
for many more years. They
were allowed to hold Mass in the
Town Hall (first given by Rev.
M.X. Carroll and later by Rev.
Michael McCable, and finally
were able to purchase a building
in 1871.
One of the earliest Irish
residents, J.L. Fitzpatrick, was
instrumental in getting the Catholic
congregation started as well
as the Catholic Cemetery.
When Mortimer Blake wrote
the History of Franklin, for the
Centennial in 1878, there were
a few Irish names listed in his
book. https://archive.org/details/historyoftownoff79blak
held a number of open forums
in January and February to inform
residents. They meet twice
month, on the first and third
Thursdays of the month, at 7
p.m., at the First Universalist Society
in Franklin, 262 Chestnut
Street, Franklin.
Barthel, who presented information
for consideration to the
Franklin Town Council on January
6 (minutes available at http://
www.town.franklin.ma.us) , says
Derry’s
that studies conducted by the
Massachusetts Attorney General
(dated November, 2015, http://
www.mass.gov/ago/docs/energy-utilities/reros-study-final.
pdf) and the Conservation Law
Foundation (dated September,
2015, http://www.clf.org/wpcontent/uploads/2015/09/
Solving-New-Englands-Gas-
Deliverability-Problem.pdf))
dispute the assertion that more
natural gas pipelines are needed
in the state. In fact, says Barthel,
proposals currently filed with the
Federal Environmental Regulatory
Commission (FERC) suggest
that ultimately, many of these
natural gas pipelines will lead to
Canada, where the fracked natural
gas may be exported to other
countries.
The grassroots group says
towns can resist such developments
as gas pipelines and power
plants, by making such moves as
• creating binding “Rights-
Based-Ordinances,” against
fracking, sewage sludge
application, etc., according
to the Community Environmental
Legal Defense Fund
(CELDF.org).
• collaborating in coalitions
with other towns
• passing the 401 Water Quality
Certificate (under the
Clean Water Act) to protect
the local water quality.
• The Certificate preempts
FERC’s authority.
• Suing Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission, challenging
the issue of “public
necessity” as the town of
Deerfield recently has done
with the Kinder Morgan
Northeast Direct gas pipeline
proposal.
“This spring is a critical time
in Massachusetts about what
kind of energy usage we have as
a state,” says Barthel.
The Greater Franklin Node
of 350 Massachusetts is planning
Spectra Access Northeast Q1
Loop Public Forum in April, to
inform residents of all the towns
involved. It will take place on
April 7 in Sharon and will likely
include speakers from the Attorney
General’s office and the
Conservation Law Foundation.
Barthel says organizing a
common time and place to meet,
where the pipeline is so long and
involves so many towns, can be
difficult to do.
In the meantime, interested
residents can access the group at
Enormous and comical looking
hat worn over heads of
women with tall coiffures.
Women of means and leisure
in the late 1700’s styled their
hair to towering heights.
The hat from our collection,
on display in March, was
built to open and close like the
hood of a horse drawn carriage.
When indoors the hat could
be lowered to fall back in folds,
and then raised by a cord always
held by the hand of the wearer.
The calash served the same
purpose as the roof of a convertible,
to raise when it was
necessary to keep out the elements,
the rain, snow, dust, etc.
We have a reproduction calash
Artist Spotlight: Marcia Wise
By J.D. O’Gara
Marcia Wise
She came from Deerfield in
western Mass. last April in the
migratory pattern of many a
grandparent – to be closer to her
grandchildren, and she brought
with her a lifetime of color. Marcia
Wise has been an oil painter
for many years, inspired by the
natural world and the mystery
of nature. For her, “it’s all about
color,” she says. “I’m passionate
about color.”
“For many years, I’ve been a
representational artist, even in
my abstract work you can (rec)
what I’ve been depicting,” says
the Cape Cod native, who’s no
stranger to these parts. Recently,
she says, she’s “delving into a
whole new area.”
The need to create started
“really young and it started with
color,” says Wise. “I was very sensitive
to color,” says the artist, who
came from a family of musicians
and who even married a musician.
She points out that creativity
was all around her as a child, with
Italian immigrant grandparents,
including a grandmother who
could “make something out of
nothing,” and a grandfather who
was a shoemaker. Wise’s mother
led her to expressing herself with
her hands, “and color is what led
me to put things on paper,” says
Wise, who took her first private
painting lessons at age 9.
“My work reflects changes
in my life,” says Wise. “You can
mark your time through what
you’re producing.” Wise says her
greatest inspiration comes from
nature, and she will express her
emotions about scenes through
her painting. The interactions of
color and light still fascinate her,
but lately, her work “is more like
“Inner Sanctum,” 36”x36”
a probing meditation, a discovery
that happens within myself I’m
wanting to bring forth, now.”
As someone who was born
near the ocean, Wise has a wealth
of ocean scenes she’s painted, but
she also finds inspiration through
her travels. Most recently, she’s
spent a month in India, a place
she wanted to go since she was
young. She has found she wants to
capture the colors she saw in the
country, and specifically how the
colors surrounded the women and
the work she saw them do there.
All of India is so colorful,” says
Wise, who explains she’s expressing
“in my own way what my experience
was, bringing that here
so people can see that, because
there’s no explaining it.”
Wise prefers to use oils, and she
explains it’s best to view her work
in person, because of the texture
of her work.
“I do use brushes, but I primarily
use palette knives and
putty knives to paint with. You
need to see the work in person. As
I build a painting, I use more non
traditional painting instruments
– palette knives, putty knives. I
have one workshop I do that’s all
experimental tools for people who
want to let go and have the adventure
of self discovery – I used to
call it full color workshop.”
In fact, in March, Wise’s work
will be up at the Franklin Art
Center, and she’s also working
with Linda and Ian Kabat on
putting together some workshops.
“I’ve always loved to teach,” says
the artist, who has a studio at her
home in Norfolk and also teaches
workshops and weeklong classes
in the summertime all over New
England. “I really love to share
the joy of color and expression
with other people.”
Davin Painting
In addition to planning
some workshops at Franklin
Art Center, says Wise,
“I will also have a show at
the Norfolk Public Library
in September, through the
Norfolk Cultural Council.”
Wise has also been talking
with the educational
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are
Dead at Dean College March 2-6
The School of the Arts at Dean
College will perform Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern are Dead, beginning
Wednesday, March 2, 2016
through Sunday, March 6, 2016.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are
Dead is the highly inventive tale
of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet
as told from the bewildered view
of two minor characters, Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern. The
screenwriter of the Oscar winning
Shakespeare in Love, Tom
Stoppard presents this Elizabethan
comic duo the opportunity
to take the lead role, but do so in a
world where echoes of Waiting for
Godot resound, where reality and
illusion intermix, and where fate
leads our two heroes to a tragic
but inevitable end. You won’t want
to miss our talented students perform
this modern dramatic masterpiece!
The Dean College production
of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
are Dead will take place in the
Performing Arts Studios Stage at
Dean College, 61 School Street,
Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday –
Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and
Tri-County Children’s Center Begins 4-Day Preschool Program
The Tri-County Regional
Children’s Center, located at
147 Pond Street in Franklin, will
implement a new four-day preschool
program in fall 2016.
“Over the years, families have
inquired if we would consider
a four-day program. Adding a
four-day schedule will best support
the families in having additional
options for their children.
The 4-year-olds will benefit from
added support as they prepare to
transition to kindergarten, which
is typically five days,” explained
Children’s Center instructor Michelle
Tilden.
Only those children who are
four years old by September 15,
2016 are eligible for the fourday
program. Sessions will be
held every Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday, from 8:50
a.m. to 11:20 a.m. The cost of
this new program will be $48 per
week.
The school will continue to
offer a three-day preschool program
to children who are three
years old by September 15, 2016,
and no older than four years, 9
months by December 15, 2016.
Sessions are held every Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday from
8:50 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. The cost
is $36 per week.
Tuition is subject to change. A
$25 non-refundable fee is due at
the time of registration. Parents
or care givers must bring their
child’s birth certificate to registration.
A downloadable application
is available on the center’s website,
tcchildrenscenter.com.
Enrollment is limited to residents
of the 11 towns within
the Tri-County district, which
includes Franklin, Medfield,
Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North
Attleboro, Plainville, Seekonk,
Sherborn, Walpole, and Wrentham.
A random drawing of
names will be held to determine
enrollment.
Under the direction of three
instructors, Michelle Tilden, Lisa
Oxford and Dina Taylor, each of
whom possesses extensive training
and experience, high school
students in Tri-County’s Early
Education Program plan and
implement curriculum for the
center’s preschool programs.
Franklin Student Collect
Clothes for Foster Children
From February 1 through
February 12, the Student
Government at Jefferson Elementary
School in Franklin
conducted a pajama and sock
drive to benefit the Friends of
Foster Care and Comfort Cases
for kids. All collected pajamas
and socks were included within
a backpack and delivered to
the children as they begin their
journey with a new foster home.
Representative Jeffrey Roy
and Senator Richard Ross presented
the resourceful Student
Government members with
citations from both the House
of Representatives and Senate
congratulating them for their
success.
“It is the small but sincere
acts, like ensuring a foster child
has new warm clothes, that can
make all the difference in the
world in the life of a young person,”
said Representative Jeffrey
N. Roy (D-Franklin). “I am
heartened to see that these kids
took it upon themselves to take
on this project, and recognize
the difference they can make
in the world. I am honored to
represent such a creative and
thoughtful group of young
people.”
“Our Student Council
members worked together to
organize this collection to help
other children,” said Principal
Linda Ashley. “As educators we
are very proud when our students
extend our school’s core
values of responsibility and investment
to help others in our
community.”
“I am so pleased that students
at Jefferson Elementary
School have organized such a
fantastic initiative. Entering a
new foster home can be hard,
but a new set of clothes can go a
long way to truly change someone’s
life for the better. These
students are an inspiration for
our community and I am so
proud of the work they put into
this,” said Senator Ross. (R-
FPAC’s production of the family
uses THE BLACK BOX’s flexible
space. The intimacy of the
venue and the show’s clever staging
bring audiences right up close
to all the action and into The Little
Mermaid’s fantasy world. The theater’s
360-degree catwalk provides
a dramatic platform to feature
the production’s professional orchestra,
conducted by Musical
Director Hallie Wetzell. FPAC’s
costumer, Merrie Whitney, who is
building the entire show, has fashioned
designs that are true to the
spirit of the movie, but reflect her
creativity in supporting the show’s
direction and choreography by
Paone, Mercer and Kellie Stamp.
Franklin Named 6 th Safest City in Mass. By SafeWise
Franklin has been named one
of the 20 Safest Cities in Massachusetts
for 2016, according to
SafeWise, a community-focused
safety organization committed to
increasing home and community
safety, education, awareness, and
preparedness. To compile this
report, SafeWise analysts considered
the most recent FBI crime
data from 2014 to rank these cities,
which all have a minimum
population of 8,000 people. From
there, it evaluated the remaining
cities, narrowing it down based
on the number of reported violent
crimes (aggravated assault,
murder, rape, and robbery) and
property crimes (burglary, arson,
larceny-theft, and motor vehicle
theft) in each city. SafeWise then
calculated the likelihood of these
crimes occurring out of 1,000
people in each city.
exciting opportunity for music
students, on a national level,
to demonstrate the skills that
they have honed through hard
work and perseverance. Locally,
assessments are held at
Encore Music Academy and
Recording Studios, which is a
Founding School and a regional
assessment center for this internationally
acclaimed Program.
Student participants come from
all around the New England
area, many traveling from as
do adjudicators assess students
based upon ability to perform
on their instrument of choice
of success in music study from
It inspires excellence through
Prem Pendkar, age 11 of
Franklin, Mass., was recognized
by the Royal Conservatory
Music Development Program
this past December when he was
awarded his second National
Gold Medal for Level 5 Voice.
Prem studies voice and piano,
and enjoys playing saxophone
in the Jazz and Rock Ensemble
at Encore Music Academy and
Recording Studios in Franklin.
Prem was also awarded the
National Gold Medal for Level
3 Voice in 2014. The RCMDP
awards Gold Medals to the
students who have achieved
the highest score in the entire
country within their specific skill
level for each instrument on the
Music Development Program
assessments.
Prem has been studying voice
and piano at Encore for over
three years. Under the guidance
of his vocal instructor, Lisa
Ostrow, Prem began his studies
in voice using the curriculum
of the RCMDP right from the
start. Ostrow, Vocal Director
and co-owner of Encore Music
Academy and Recording Studios,
along with her business
partner, Patrick Dreier, had this
to say: “Having already earned
High Honors With Distinction,
(which requires a score of 90 or
higher), in four levels of vocal
study with the RCMDP, and
High Honors in three levels of
piano, Prem’s second National
Gold Medal is a true testament
to the dedication he brings to
his music studies, the level of
support he receives from his
family, his innate talent, and his
tremendous desire to achieve.
We are immensely proud of
this young man and, best of all,
Prem is an absolute joy to work
with - he is fun and funny, and
incredibly bright. We could not
be more proud of him, as we are
of all our students.”
In May of this year, Prem will
be taking his Piano Level 5 assessment,
as well as his Level 6
Vocal assessment. He recently
received First Class Honors
with Distinction for his Beginner
Theory Rudiments assessment,
as well.
For the assessments, students
are graded on proficiency in the
following areas: Performance;
technical requirements; aural
skills; rhythm; and, sight-reading
ability. Encore will be hosting
another round of regional assessments
this spring and is very
much looking forward to the opportunity
to meet and interact
with young musicians from all
over the Northeast.
has officially accepted Dean
College as a member of its
football-only conference, beginning
with the fall 2017
season. This is another positive
step for the College as
it transitions from a NJCAA
program to a NCAA Division
III program. Currently
ECFC members include
Anna Maria College (MA),
Becker College (MA), Castleton
State College (VT), Galludet
University (VA), Husson
University (ME), SUNY-
Maritime (NY) Mount Ida
College (MA) and Norwich
University. Additionally, Alfred
State College (NY) was
accepted at the most recent
conference meeting.
“Being accepted into a
conference is a big step for
Dean,” says Athletic Director
Todd Vasey. “It stabilizes our
schedule each year and creates
some immediate rivalries
in the region.” Next fall,
Dean will play Husson and
Alfred State, and will begin
a full conference schedule in
2017. In addition,
Dean will also play Salve
Regina and Wagner during
the transition time.
In 2016-17, Dean will be
in its exploratory year of the
NCAA membership process.
All of Dean’s athletic team
schedules will encompass
area four-year institutions.
Eyelid Margin Disease
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Eyelid margin disease, including
blepharitis, occurs when
the eyelids become coated with
oily particles and bacteria near
the base of the eyelashes. This
condition is very common, and
unfortunately, is often misdiagnosed
by many eye professionals
as allergy, which it is not.
With eyelid margin disease
the eyelids are inflamed. Symptoms
include: Eye and eyelid
irritation, itchiness of the eye,
redness of the eye and a burning
sensation.
This condition frequently occurs
in people who have a tendency
toward oily skin, dandruff
or dry eyes. With blepharitis,
both the upper and lower eyelids
become coated with oily particles
and bacteria near the base
of the eyelashes. It may cause
irritation, itchiness, redness, and
stinging or burning of the eye.
What causes blepharitis?
Everyone has bacteria on
the surface of their skin, but in
some people, bacteria thrive in
the skin at the base of the eyelashes.
Large amounts of bacteria
around the eyelashes can
cause dandruff-like scales and
particles to form along the lashes
and eyelid margins.
Blepharitisis also associated
with meibomianitis— a dysfunction
and inflammation of
the nearby oil glands of the eyelids
(called meibomian glands).
Blepharitis is also common in
association with a skin disorder
called rosacea. In this case, we
call the eyelid problem “ocular
rosacea.”
What is ocular rosacea?
People who have acne rosacea,
a common skin condition
causing pimple-like bumps and
facial redness may suffer from
ocular rosacea. This can affect
the eyelids with redness and
swelling. If you have ocular rosacea,
reduce alcohol, caffeine and
chocolate in your diet. Omega-3
fatty acids (fish oil and flaxseed
oil) are also helpful. Doxycycline
or similar derivatives can help
improve the dysfunctional oil
glands as well as both facial and
eye symptoms. Reducing stress
and better sleep are critical in
controlling the symptoms.
What is demodex
blepharitis?
Some people with oily (seborrheic)
skin, and more so those
who have a weakened immune
system can have microscopic
mites (demodex folliculorum),
and their waste materials cause
clogging of follicles at roots of
eyelashes, and in some cases
might be associated with development
of skin conditions
such as rosacea and blepharitis.
Another version of these mites
(demodex brevis) can be found
more generally in oil glands of
the skin and eyelids, which also
may contribute to blepharitis
symptoms. While presence of
these tiny mites is common in
everyone, researchers speculate
that some people develop demodex
blepharitis due to unusual
allergic or immune system reactions
leading to inflammation.
What if I get a stye?
A stye develops from an eyelash
follicle or an eyelid oil gland
that becomes clogged from excess
oil, debris or bacteria. Styes
can be a complication of blepharitis.
If you have a stye, treat it
not better within two weeks, see
How is blepharitis
treated?
Blepharitis is often a chronic
condition, but it can be controlled
with the following treatment:
Warm compresses. Wet a
clean washcloth with warm
water, wring it out and place
it over your closed eyelids for
at least one minute. Repeat
two or three times, rewetting
the washcloth as it cools. This
will loosen scales and debris
around your eyelashes. It also
helps dilute oil secretions from
nearby oil glands, preventing
the development of a chalazion
(stye)-an enlarged lump caused
by clogged oil secretions in the
eyelid.
Eyelid scrubs. Using a clean
washcloth, cotton swab or commercial
lint-free pad soaked in
warm water and few drops of
baby shampoo, gently scrub the
base of your eyelashes for about
15 seconds per eyelid.
Antibiotic ointment. Your
drops may also be prescribed
temporarily to relieve dry eye or
inflammation.
Specific treatment of demodex
blepharitis: A commercial
eyelid scrub combined with
tea tree oil may be effective for
treating this type of blepharitis.
The target here is to reduce the
population of the mite (demodex).
Other reported treatments
of demodex blepharitis include
sulfur oil and steroids. An antiparasitic
gel (metronidazole)
also has shown effectiveness as
a treatment.
Eyelid margin disease is very
common. With a full time external
disease specialist on premises,
our center offers state of
the art equipment to diagnose
and treatment eye problems, including
blepharitis. We are now
Milford Regional Medical
Center held its annual meeting
on January 25, celebrating
a year of expansion and transition,
and honoring the memory
of a colleague dedicated to helping
patients in need. More than
400 – including Lt. Gov. Karyn
Polito and local legislators – attended
at the Double Tree in
Milford.
“The year 2015 will go
down as an important, successful
year at Milford Regional
Medical Center,” says Edward
J. Kelly, president and CEO of
Milford Regional. In October,
the $52 million expansion project,
named the Meehan Family
Pavilion, was completed. Ed
credits local businessman Kevin
Meehan, and his wife Patty, for
challenging the hospital to build
a facility that addressed all the
hospital’s needs.
The year was also marked by
the retirements of long-serving
administrator and a tribute to
Frank Saba, who retired as CEO
in December after 27 years.
The hospital also recognized
the work of its social workers – a
compassionate team that assists
not only patients, but the hospital
staff in times of crisis. Last
month, the social workers faced
a tragedy in their own department
with the sudden death of
Karen Evers following an accident
two days before Christmas.
Karen was dedicated to
helping patients in need, often
providing money from her own
pocket to assist them. In honor
of Karen, Milford Regional has
established The Karen Evers
Social Work Fund, a fund that
will be managed by the hospital’s
social workers to help needy patients
with care and treatment.
The Milford Regional medical
staff announced it has donated
$5,000 to kick-start the fund.
As part of the meeting, six corporators
were elected: Mark A.
Abate of Hopkinton, Marilyn G.
Alling of Upton, Steven C. Cunningham
of Upton, Ed Hurley of
Franklin, Judy P. Lynch of Uxbridge
and Jill Smith of Walpole.
OUT MetroWest Receives Grant
from The Lenny Zakim Fund
OUT MetroWest joined 52
other local organizations being
honored at The Lenny Zakim
Fund’s annual Award Ceremony
at The Revere Hotel in Boston.
Supporters gathered to celebrate
the most recent recipients of
grants from The Lenny Zakim
Fund (LZF). OUT MetroWest
was honored to receive a $10,000
grant to support the hiring of the
organization’s second full-time
staff member. LZF identifies and
connects small community-based
organizations, and OUT MetroWest
looks forward to making
use of the many supports that
LZF extends to its grantees.
LZF is founded on the belief
that effective social change can
be created at the grassroots. It
aims to fund those organizations
which operate “below the radar
screen” of larger foundations and
government agencies. In 2016,
LZF will award grants totaling
$520,000 to grassroots organizations
throughout the greater Boston
area. One-third of this year’s
grants were awarded to organizations
that specifically serve youth.
OUT MetroWest’s executive
director, Jack Patrick Lewis, notes
that one cannot underestimate
the importance of this support.
“As OUT MetroWest completes
its first year as an independent
not-for-profit, we are particularly
grateful to supporters like The
Lenny Zakim Fund. Their investment
in our young organization
allows us to address the issues
facing local LGBTQ residents.
In spite of recent victories like
the legalization of same-sex marriage,
LGBTQ people remain
disproportionately impacted by
issues such as housing insecurity,
depression, and substance abuse.
The Lenny Zakim Fund grant
will help us tackle these issues
head-on.”
OUT MetroWest runs eight
youth group meetings each
month, including a group for all
LGBTQ and allied high school
youth (WAGLY); a group for
transgender and gender nonconforming
high school youth
(Umbrella); and a group for
LGBTQ and allied middle school
youth (Nexus). The LZF grant
also will allow OUT MetroWest
to respond to increased requests
for community workshops and to
launch a program for LGBTQ
families.
Versatile Gill Plays Key Roles for Franklin Quintet
By Ken Hamwey
Kevin Gill isn’t a high profile
player, but he’s adept at fulfilling
key roles and delivering clutch
results for Franklin High’s basketball
team that’s hoping to
advance deep into the sectional
tournament.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound
Gill, who can play
every position
except center,
averaged
7 points, 4
rebounds
and 4½ assists
during
the regular
season. Those
numbers may not
be eye-popping but when it
comes to defense, sharing the
ball, and taking an important
shot, Panthers’ coach A.J. Neely
is quick to use superlatives to describe
the versatile senior.
“Kevin was used sparingly
on the varsity last year,’’ Neely
said. “But, during the summer,
he improved his overall game
so much that he’s become a big
key for us. He’s an all-around
player, one who can defend solidly
and pass effectively. He’s
got confidence, great court vision
and outstanding instincts
on defense.’’
Neely, whose Panthers were
14-3 at Local Town Pages deadline,
also admired the way Gill
stepped up when Franklin was
in need of an offensive jolt.
Gill sank a buzzer-beater
against Oliver Ames and
also connected on a trio
of three-pointers in the
fourth quarter to force
overtime in the Panthers’
victory over Foxboro.
“I got the ball in the post
and threw in a floater,’’ Gill said,
referring to the Oliver Ames
contest. “I was able to beat the
defender with the shot. I was
mobbed afterwards and excited
we won. The Foxboro game was
interesting because I don’t consider
myself a good three-point
shooter. We weren’t shooting
well, so I took one three, hit it,
Dean College
Football Players
Accept Offers
Four Dean College
athletes accepted
offers to continue
their college football
careers on National
Signing Day on Wednesday,
February 3, 2016.
Dean’s linebacker Aaron
Donalson signed to play at
the University of Delaware;
defensive lineman Geoff
Horwitz signed to play at the
University of Rhode Island;
linebacker Daniel Palmer
signed to play at Bethune-
Cookman University; and defensive
back Ruben Saunders
signed to play with North
Carolina Central University.
January placements include
defensive back
Najee Brown signing to
UNC Pembroke; wide
receiver Travion Fletcher
signing to West Alabama;
quarter back Jackson Mc-
Donald signing to Mars Hill;
and linebacker Jacquae Peart
signing to Bethune-Cookman
University.
National Signing Day,
usually the first Wednesday
of February, is the first day
that players sign a binding
National Letter of Intent for
college football with a school
that is a member of the
United States National Collegiate
Athletic Association
(NCAA).
Kevin Gill credits hard work for his increased confidence and versatility
as a player for and as an asset to Franklin High basketball.
then kept going.’’
Gill’s sudden-found confidence
this year is a result of his
dedication and desire to improve.
He credits hard work for
evolving into a valuable asset.
“I knew I had to get stronger
physically, get better on fundamentals
and sharpen my ballhandling
skills,’’ Gill noted. “I
lifted weights, played a lot of
summer ball and worked on my
speed and quickness.’’
Using an aggressive style
whether he’s in the backcourt or
at forward, Gill is comfortable
when he’s on defense or passing
to a teammate. “I take pride on
defense,’’ he said. “I’m not super
fast, but I can stay with an opponent
and do the dirty work. On
offense, I like to drive or slash to
the hoop, then pass off. An assist
is just as good as a field goal.’’
Gill’s goals for the tourney
include winning the sectional,
then playing for a state crown.
He firmly believes that his objectives
are realistic. “If we stick
with our up-tempo style, apply
pressure and be smooth in transition,
we’ll do well. Our team is
strong, and it’s got depth. A state
title would be a great way to finish
my senior season.’’
Gill is quick to credit others
for Franklin’s success, pointing
to senior captain Tim Prunier
at point guard and sophomore
Paul Mahon on the wing. His
coach also gets some accolades.
“Tim facilitates our game,’’ Gill
said. “He’s got high standards as
a distributor and scorer. Paul is
super fast, quick and an excellent
shooter. As for coach Neely,
he’s smart, a good motivator and
good with strategy. He’s helpful
at instructing players during a
game.’’
A good student, Gill wants to
major in computer science and
is interested in either Northeastern
University or Worcester
PolyTech. Calling his father
(Joe) a role model for his support
and help, Gill’s philosophy of
competing is a solid indicator
of how he elevated his game.
“I strive to improve all the time
and enjoy the game,’’ he emphasized.
“Those things lead to
winning. And, playing basketball
helps with learning life lessons.
It helps to strengthen your work
ethic, manage your time and to
set goals.’’
Starting games mostly as a
power forward, Gill also can
play the point. That occurs
when matchups warrant that
decision. Neely also is willing to
use his swingman to guard players
with size differences. “His instincts
are so good on defense,’’
Neely noted. “Kevin knows how
to keep his body in position and
that restrains him from committing
fouls.’’
Whether he’s unsung or just
plain effective in a variety of
tasks, Gill doesn’t mind being
labeled. “I don’t view myself
as unsung, even if others do,’’
he said. “I just try to do what’s
needed to help us win. If our
team needs defense, then that’s
what I’ll try to provide.’’
Kevin Gill has become adept
and dependable at delivering
whatever commodity Franklin’s
basketball team needs.

Franklin Girls Swim to Division Title
By Christopher Tremblay
In only her third year as
head coach of the Franklin girls
swim team, Coach Jess Pridham
has gotten her team over the
first mountain in capturing the
Kelly-Rex Division of the Hockomock
League. The Panthers
were undefeated in their accomplishment,
handing neighboring
King Philip their only loss of the
season.
“This is unprecedented for
Franklin swimming, being only
in their seventh year of the program,”
the coach said. “We have
been building up to this point
over the past two years. Two
years ago, we were the runnerup
to North Attleboro, last year
to King Philip, but this year no
more runner-up status. It is our
title.”
It was a very emotional response
from the girls once they
knocked off KP, and holding
such a large lead against Attleboro,
things started to come into
focus for the Panther swimmers.
Franklin has been lead by senior
captains Leah Zogby, Chloe
Roche, Molly Brown and Colleen
Proulx.
Zogby went undefeated in all
five of the events she swam in for
Franklin while qualifying in four
(200IM, 200Freestyle, 500Freestyle
and the 100Breastroke) of
them allowing her to partake in
post-season swimming. Roche,
the team’s clean-up swimmer
as called by her Coach, is a very
solid swimmer that the Panthers
can count on to finish in the top
four every time she gets into the
pool. The distance swimmer
takes part primarily in the 200
and 500.
Brown, another 200 and 500
freestyle swimmer, is another
stronger individual that is very
consistent in the water. She is
still hoping to lower her 500
time so that she qualify for the
State Tournament. Proulx is the
team’s inspiration; despite having
to take her junior year off
due to knee surgery she continued
to support her teammates
all the while on crutches This
year, she was given the clearance
by her doctor to get back into
the pool and has managed to
swim herself into the top three
of the Hockomock League in
Franklin Girls Swim, from left to right: Captains Colleen Proulx, Molly
Brown, Coach Pridham, Chloe Roche and Leah Zogby
the 200IM and 100Breaststroke.
Although Franklin was able
to finally capture its first Hockomock
Championship, what the
girls accomplished this season
was nothing short of what she
anticipated when the season goo
under way.
“Going undefeated and
capturing the Kelly-Rex was
nothing out of the ordinary,
“Pridham said. “I knew that
these girls were going to work
extremely hard, and I expected
this from them.”
Two other individuals that
greatly contributed to the Panthers
undefeated season were
senior Jennifer Ayotte and sophomore
Ashley Loomis. Ayotte
qualified for the 100Freestyle
and 200IM and the coach is expecting
that she’ll be in the hunt
to do well and finish in the top
ten. Loomis, on the other hand,
is the reigning 500Freestyle
State Champion and her coach
is looking for her to repeat. She
also completed the season with
an undefeated record in both
the 500 and 200.
“She was able to capture the
500Free as a freshman, and her
goals have not changed as a
sophomore,” the Panther coach
said. “We are hoping that she
can repeat she has a year experience
in the Hockomock League
Championship, the Sectionals as
well as the States so she knows
what she is up against.”
Please Recycle This Newspaper
In addition to the individual
swimmers competing in postseason
play, she’s looking for
the team as a whole to do well.
Franklin has also qualified in the
200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle
Relay and the 400 Freestyle
Relay.
“The team is swimming well,
strong and mostly healthy,”
Pridham said. “If we can keep
the colds and sinus infections
away for at least a few more
weeks then I see no reason why
we shouldn’t do well.”
For the first time in their
seven-year history, the girls swim
team captured the Hockomock
League Championship scoring
383 points beating league rival
King Philip by 115 points. Loomis
won both the 200 and 500
Freestyle, while Zogby grabbed
the 200 Individual Medley with
Proulx taking second. The girls
also took both the 200 and 400
freestyle relays.
On February 6, the Franklin
girls finished 6th at the Hockomock
Championship Sectionals,
with Ashley Loomis winning
both the 200 and 500 freestyle
while Leah Zogby grabbed a
3rd place finish in the 500. Both
moved to the State Tournament,
with Zogby will also swimming
in the 100 fly.
Also qualifying for the states
were Colleen Proulx (200 IM and
100 breaststroke), Megan Lazarek
(100 breaststroke) and Molly
Brown (500 freestyle) individually
as well as all three relay teams. As
of Local Town Pages deadline, the
results from states had not yet
been determined.
The Snow is the Story
By John Ke ley
editor
As with most stories, there are
two sides. Some would s e the new
snowfa l as (cold) beauty, while
others s e a nuisance to b endured.
Sch ol children s e a unique opportunity
for play, or a day off from
school. The pragmatist sees the
cycle of water that includes evaporation
in one season, and condensation
in another. At some point,
many people understand it as a fact
of life, sometimes mild, at other
times dangerous.
Certainly, we ar experiencing
a harsh winter by most standards.
From October through most of January,
we did not s e this coming.
Over a thr e w ek period through
the middle of February, Ashland
has received about six f et of snow.
Fortunately, the town has the capability
to deal e fectively with the
effects of the storms, and the sta f
Franklin Library Invites
Genealogy-minded
Folks to Join the Club
By MarJorie turner ho lMan
The night was bi ter cold, but
for the 20+ folks who showed up
a the Franklin Public Library for
the first m eting of the Genealogy
Club, it was a time to talk
about family co nections and
countries of origin. Many participants
were from Franklin, with a
few from Milford, Norfolk and
Be lingham. The theme of connections
was consistent as each
person explained their interest in
participating in the group.
Linda Batchelder of Franklin
noted that she got interested in
genealogy because of a relative’s
ashes that remain in her a tic.
“His name was Bertul—he died
during the 1918 flu epidemic—
a friend of my grandfather’s,”
Batchelder began. “When my
grandfather was able to return to
Latvia, he wa su posed to take
the ashes wit him, but wasn’t
a lowed to. They’re sti l in our
a tic. We learned that Bertul had
b en our grandfather’s best man
in his we ding and ma ried a
relative of ours.”
Each person had stories to
share of wha they had already
learned in their family research,
and a l had mysteries they hoped
to solve in the future. Vicki Buchanio,
Head of Reference and
Public Services a the Franklin
Public Library told the group, “I
have lots of relations who must
sti l be alive—I’ve never found
the death certificates for them,
even though some of them were
born in 1802, so they must sti l
be alive!”
Among those who a tended
were people with r ots in Finland,
Poland, Germany, and
England, besides several of
Scots-Irish descent. Buchanio
was pleased with the turnout—
she had b en afraid n one would
show up. Buchanio has had a
long-time pa sion for genealogy
A times, we hear news reports
of a beloved parent with
Alzheimer’s disease or dementia,
or other situations where a child
encounter with police officers
who weren’t aware of the child’s
special circumstances and fears.
In these cases, a li tle knowledge
can go a long way.
The Ho liston Police Department
that knowledge and ge to be ter
In January, The Ho liston
the C.A.R.E. (Children and
aimed at helping police gather
Lt. Craig Denman is overs e-
“Basica ly, it’ something we
would be beneficial for people
The Li tle White Market Wi l Be Back Be ter than Ever at End of Month
By J.d. o’Gara
Just over six years ago,
Tracey Liberatore had a
vision for the property she
drove by at 5 Depot Str et
in Hopedale just over six
years ago.
“I thought it would
make a cute li tle market,
and we didn’t have anything
like that in Hopedale,”
says the Hopedale
Mom and 21-year-resident
of the town. And if anyone
could turn that li tle
shop into the kitchen of
the co munity, Tracey
could. She’d worked in
the f od industry since she
was a t en, later partnering
t open a pub in Milford
ca led “One Flight Down,”
through which Liberatore
began her pa sion for f od
and catering. The Courtyard in
Milford a preciated her talents
so much they asked her to run
its restaurant, and she later came
back to lead the kitchen, wi ning
the Ma rio t Diamond A sociate
and Make a Di ference Awards.
Busy wit her two boys, Liberatore
started slo wit her
new li tle market. Pre ty s on,
she built a su ce sfu luncheon
busine s.
“I think we have a real home
f eling,” says Tracey. “It’s very
comfy, like you’re walking into
your grandmother’s
kitchen. It’s cozy, and
there are sme ls (o f od
c oking).”
Liberatore and her
sta f c ok a l of the
dishes right on the premises.
“We do a lot of
homemade soups and
salads, everything from
scratch,” says Liberatore.
“We even roast
our turkeys here, make
meatba ls, and we o fer
di ners, including
chicken Marsala and
b ef stew,” she says.
In fact, Hopedale
residents and local busine
ses have begun to
take advantage of the
catering options, an area
Liberatore is excited to
grow.
“We do a lot of catering,”
says Liberatore, who can provide
ensemble, production crew and
pit band for the musical, Grease
The musical features an a ray
with music and lyrics wri ten by
Jim Jacobs and Wa ren Casey, is
of the 1950’s. The popula rockn-ro
“Greased Lightning,” “We Go Together”
and “Shaken’ a the High
“I’m rea ly excited to put on
Each spring the MHS Musical
The cast alone for this productio
numbers 50, says Christie,
with another 50 students working
backstage as crew. Two students
wi l play in the orchestra pit, although
due to the complexity of
the music, “we have hired some
says Christie.
Lead roles were chosen by audition,
and these cast members include
both experienced and novice
players.
Swan, cast in the role as “Da ny.”
“I’ve never taken any voice le sons
Do you know wha tests your
child is taking thi spring? One
local residen thinks parents are
uninformed abou the new education
standards and the a companying
tests being considered by the
state of Ma sachuse ts. He hopes
to bring the polarizing i sue to the
forefront at Norfolk Town M eting
and on the town election ballot.
The United States is embarking
on an unprecedented journey
to unify education standards for a l
students in kindergarten through
12th grade. Known as the Common
Core State Standards Initiative,
these standard set co mon
education benchmarks acro s the
country in order to prepare students
for co lege and the workforce.
The Co mon Core uses the
Partnership for A se sment of
Readine s for Co lege and Car
ers, or the PAR C exam, to test
ho we l students have learned the
new cu riculum. In Ma sachuse ts,
the PAR C exam wi l eventua ly
replace the Ma sachuse ts Comprehensive
A se sment System,
or MCAS test.
Norfolk resident Patrick
Touhey would like to pu the
brakes on the PAR C test and
force discu sion of the new standards
and whether or no the
Norfolk and King Philip sch ols
should implemen them. Touhey
wi l be placing an article on the
Norfolk Town M eting wa rant
to remove Co mon Core and
PAR C testing from the sch ols
in a non-binding vote. He is also
a tempting to get enough signatures
to place the question on the
ba lot for the town election this
spring.
Touhey hopes these actions
wi l send a me sage to local sch ol
co mi t es and the State Department
of Education: “We don’t
agr e with the PAR C testing and
Co mon Core cu riculum.” He
wants the local sch ols to return to
the pre-2 09 Ma sachuse ts educational
state standards.
After a tough winter, the
co munity can l ok forward to
a w ek of nature i mersion that
doesn’t involve snow. The King
Philip Science National Honor
Society wi l be hosting naturalist
Brent Nixon during the w ek of
March 17 to 24. Several events
are pla ned for the sch ols and
the tri-town area.
Nixon, a renowned science
educator, has dedicated his life
to endangered species research.
Known for his high energy, interpretive
science shows, Nixon
travels extensively to promote
environmental education. In
a dition to his research work
and publications, Nixon has appeared
on TV, radio, and in print
media.
The Naturalist-in-Residence
w ek was the idea of A n Lambert,
a science teacher at KP
High Sch ol and the advisor for
the sch ol’s Science National
Honor Society. Lambert had
traveled to Alaska on a cruise
and Nixon was the naturalist on
board.
“His pa sion for his work,
knowledge about his topics,
and vivacious, entertaining,
and informational presentation
style was what made me think it
would be a great o portunity for
the KP students and co munity
if we could bring him here,” said
Lambert.
Lambert believes that when
students actua ly m et scientists
and interact with them, science
becomes interesting and fun.
Nixon’s expertise on wildlife and
field research should prov eyeopening
‘a Place To Turn’
for those in need
By liz taurasi
It’s b en years in the making,
but despite some majo roadblocks
an delays, University
Station in Westw od is fina ly
opening for busine s in March.
And with it come some big
name stores the area has b en
waiting for, including Target (set
t open March 4, s e related story
on page 13) and Wegmans, both
of which wi l anchor the complex.
University Station, when
fu ly complete, is expected to
include a proximately 50, 0
square f et of retail and restaurant
space, along with residential
apartments and more.
University Station officia ly
opens for busine s in March as
we l as 16 busine ses, including:
Target, Marsha ls/HomeG ods,
Nordstrom Rack, Sports Authority,
PetSmart, Michaels, ULTA
Beauty, Kay Jewelers, Starbucks,
Smashburger, Famous F otwear,
Fidelity Investments, Dre s Barn,
David’s Bridal, Panera Bread,
and Charming Charlies.
Situated on 120 acres, University
Station, isn’t just going to be
a new sho ping destination, it’s
also a co munity. The mixeduse
development wi l feature
a blend of retail stores, restaurants,
recreation and residential
housing. The initial residential
component of the project wi l
include Gables residential, which
wi l feature 350 luxury apartment
units, as we l as Bridges
by Epoch, a memory care facility;
both also expected t open
this year. Gables Residential is
projected t open in late spring
2015, a cording to New England
Development officials.
A ditiona ly, University Station
is expected to have up to
350, 0 square f et of o fice
space available.
The project has b en a long
time in the making. In 2 07,
the project was put on hol due
to pla ning and financial i sues.
In 2 08, Wegmans was held up
from coming in after a local state
representative ca led for a home
rule petition to a prove the liquor
license for Wegmans at what was
then known as Westw od Station.
This ha pened just as the
legislature was ready to move
ahead with the a proval. A the
time, some local representatives
were concerned about giving
Wegmans an advantage over
Roche Bros. Both Wegmans and
Roche Bros wer eventua ly able
to secure b er and wine licenses
in the spring of 2012. Westw od
Special Town M eting a proved
the long-awaited project back in
May, 2013. Developers broke
ground on the project six months
later.
University Station is being
developed by New England Development,
along with Eastern
Real Estate and National Development.
“We l ok forward to welcoming
local and area residents to
this new sho ping destination,”
Dougla s Karp, president of New
England Development said in a
formal statement. “University
Station wi l be an exciting new
a dition to Westw od and brings
together a mix of popular stores,
restaurants, housing and more.”
