New Businesses Fairing Well in
Norwood Center
by Renee Plant
As Norwood Center continues
its revitalization process, new
businesses opening in the area
hope to enhance the downtown
experience for residents.
“The best thing about being
in Norwood Center is the opportunity
it brings,” said Joe Fisher,
local manager at True Value in
Norwood, which opened this
past August. “There is a lot of
opportunity [for businesses to
grow] in the downtown area of
Norwood. I’d like our store to be
a great stepping stone toward the
revitalizing of the downtown.”
According to Fisher, the location
of the store has been advantageous
for business, as he says
foot traffic brings in customers.
Still, he acknowledges there are
challenges given the type of
business he runs.
“People have come in from
running their errands, leaving
the bank, things like that,” Fisher
said. “For a brand-new store, we
are doing pretty well, though this
time of year there is a lull that
we anticipate will pick up again
when the weather warms up. It
might take a similar retail store
near us that complements us to
really drive more people to stop
in.”
There is a vast range of retail
in the downtown area ranging
from restaurants, entertainment
facilities and specialty stores.
Phillipe Chelala, who with his
wife co-owns Chelala Jewelry &
Gifts, says his store has received
positive feedback since its opening
in 2014.
“We have been delighted by
the response of the people of
Norwood,” Chelala said. “[Customers]
have been supportive,
and we feel confident about the
future.”
While Chelala emphasizes
his satisfaction with the store’s
location, he says some there
One other issue Chelala noted
is with parking, which he says
could potentially be solved by assigning
a spot or two to each store.
However, he stated parking concerns
have not been great enough
to affect business.
“Parking has certainly been an
issue our customers have brought
up,” Chelala said. “However, our
customers can use the big parking
lot behind our store.”
It’s not only retail establishments
that are opening up downtown.
Pastor Steven Hathaway
of the Heritage Baptist Church,
which opened in its new location
on Washington Street last July,
said he feels his church has found
its long-term location in Norwood
Center after a number of moves
over the past decade.
“Our church was started by
another church in 2004,” Pastor
Hathaway said. “We began in the
high school, then moved to Walpole
Street, and then Vanderbilt
Avenue. We have always been a
Norwood church, so it was a natural
transition for us.”
Hathaway said this location is
ideal due to its accessibility, and
that staying in Norwood was the
right decision for the church because
the town has a strong sense
of community.
“This is a perfect location for
our church since we are right in
the middle of town and it is easy
for people to get to us,” Pastor
Hathaway said. “Beyond that,
the people of Norwood are super
friendly, and we are happy to be
part of the community. We are
thankful to be here.”
Stores and organizations may
not be arriving as quick as some
may like, but it does seem that
Norwood Center is turning a corner
towards offering the community
some great incentives to visit
downtown.
My son Sean is a junior
at Norwood High School. In
March he will be seventeen. I
don’t know exactly where the
time went. But I do know that
soon enough my boy will become
a man-whether I like it
or not.
And unlike his older sister,
whose junior year consisted of
touring state schools from here
to what seemed like an eternity,
my son has other plans.
When he was little, army
guys were his toy of choice. In
fourth grade he would go to
school wearing head to toe fatigues
and a big smile.
One year, we went to the
Big E, and there were Marines
there. They had a station set up
in which kids could try and do a
chin up. Sean did a few and was
awarded a lanyard.
Years later, he can’t seem to
find his wallet, and would probably
lose his head if it weren’t
attached. But he always manages
to find his Marines lanyard
(I’m sure it helps that he house
and car keys are attached).
My father served in the
army. He always made it a
“If you only have a hammer, then
every problem looks like a nail.”
Out and About
My March Madness
point to say that it was during
peace time. To me, he served
and gave four years of his life
regardless. His flag is one of my
most prized possessions and is
displayed in my living room.
In an age where teens seem
to be more concerned with
what the Kardashians are up
to, and who tweeted what. My
son wants to serve his country
and become a Marine.
He has a plan-to eventually
become a police officer (like my
father before him) or go into
some form of law enforcement.
College isn’t for him. He doesn’t
want to waste our money. He
wants to serve his country.
I am proud of him, of the
man he is becoming. At the life
changing choices he will make.
But I am also sickened by
these choices. Like any other
mother, I want him to be safe.
And in a world that seems to
have gone completely crazy, the
thought of potentially letting
him go, so he can quite possibly
be placed right in the middle of
it all- keeps me up nights.
And he hasn’t even signed a
slip of paper yet.
He has asked my husband
and I to “sign off ”, so he can
join the Marines at 17. We have
both refused, agreeing that he
By Dawn C. Fitzgerald
has to finish high school.
Right now, we are all at a
stand-still. I have agreed to take
him to a recruiter. And he has
agreed to look at two schoolsbut
could care less which ones,
or where they are.
Twice I asked him to talk to
the guidance office at Norwood
High to get information on colleges.
Both times he returned
with a recruiter’s number-conveniently
forgetting college brochures.
On numerous occasions, the
hubby and I have tried to talk
him out of his choice. To guide
him in another direction.
He thinks we aren’t proud of
him. We are proud of him, but
also terrified for him.
This will be a very long,
crazy year for us-starting with
the Madness of March and
knowing we only have one year
left before everything changes.
I know my son. He will do
what he wants. He always has.
And I will be proud of him,
whatever decision he makesalthough
I’m pretty sure it’s already
been made.
I find myself hugging him
more. Hanging on every word
he says. Trying to be a bit more
patient with him. Because I
know all this will soon be ending-
with spring things will
begin anew.
As a parent, we have kids,
watch them as they grow. Try
and protect them with warnings,
helmets, and hand holding.
And even though there
are days we want to kill themmostly,
we love and support
them, and hide our fears from
them. We pray they turn out
okay, stay safe. Grow up to be
good people.
I want all of that for my
son. I am watching as he grows
and matures in the choices he
is making. I just want him to be
safe through it all.
Let the March Madness
begin. Although he is excited
for this year, and what is to
come. I am hoping the clock
ticks a bit slower. He is ready, I
am not. And I don’t think I will
ever be.
Soon enough this journey
will be his.
And I will always be proud,
and supportive (at least on the
outside). As I worry sick on the
inside
presents a name that
draws attention. The
title, however, is more
than meets the eye.
Its quality, professional
work is based on one word,
HUNKS: Honest, Uniformed,
Nice, Knowledgeable, Service
Providers. Getting the job done
quickly and efficiently is foremost
in the mind of their clients, but
what should cement the decision to
hire this company lies within their
management philosophies and
their highly trained employees.
Franchise owner and Navy veteran
Dan Tereshko has worked
hard to earn an exceptional reputation
for his services in
the local area. He also,
however, recognizes
that his company’s success
is credited from
all levels of his highly
trained staff, employees
who come from a
vast range of personal and professional
experiences, many at
personal turning points, a circumstance
Tereshko knows only too
well. When Tereshko left the Navy
Thanksgiving, 2012, he found
himself at a crossroads.
“After ten years in the Navy, I
had no idea what I wanted to do,”
Tereshko said. “I personally was
lost. It was hard to get a job.”
In February, 2014, Tereshko
found his second career when he
launched College Hunks Hauling
he now uses his leadership and
mentoring skills to pay it forward.
Tereshko appreciates the diversity
in his employees’ background and
welcomes the contribution their
unique skills bring to his organization
and his clients.
“Everyone is a student of
something,” Tereshko said. “College
Hunks is proud to employ
folks paying their way through
school, supporting those pursuing
their passion (photographers, budding
musicians, artists) and people
trying to get back on their feet, all
while teaching them about sales,
marketing and customer service.”
For Tereshko, employing fellow
veterans is a personal commitment,
and he works hard to
handpick a staff who will honestly
represent his brand. In return,
he grooms and empowers them
through all aspects of the business
to become exceptional ambassadors
of College Hunks Hauling
Junk & Moving.
“We teach, not just picking
this up and putting this down,”
Tereshko said. “We teach them
business, marketing, sales and to
look at their truck as their office.
We also teach financial aspects of
business, such as profit and loss,
debt servicing and cash flow. If
they know where the money goes,
they can serve our clients better.”
Having Fibromyalgia
Doesn’t Mean You Have to Live with Pain!
With Spring around the corner,
people look forward to planting
their garden, spring cleaning, or
playing outdoor sports, unless you
suffer from Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia
robs you from the ability
to be active due to chronic unrelenting
pain and swelling of the
joints, muscles, and tissues. This
persistent pain over time very
often leads to depression because
of the inability to enjoy life, have
mental focus and complete daily
living activities.
Jane C. visited her primary
physician when the pain began.
She was originally told that it was
arthritis pain and was referred to a
rheumatologist who diagnosed her
with fibromyalgia and put her on
anti-inflammatory and pain medicine.
When she saw no relief, she
was then referred to a physiatrist
who gave her exercises to improve
her movement and muscle tone.
As the pain persisted, she continued
to go back to her doctors for
answers and was told “you just
have to learn to live with it.” That’s
when a friend told her about The
Holistic Center at Bristol Square
in Walpole.
At our Center, we examined
Jane and found the underlying
stressors irritating her musculoskeletal
system. Changing her
diet, putting her on a nutritional
supplement program to restore
the tissues and opening the communication
highway between the
brain and the body through Chiropractic
adjustments allowed the
healing to begin.
Today, Jane C. is excited for
Spring. She is already planning
her beautiful garden and looking
forward to getting outside to take
walks with her dog. She is following
her treatment schedule and
sticking to her nutrition plan as
well. She now knows how to manage
her fibromyalgia in a way that
allows her to live the life she always
thought she would have.
4 Simple Remote Control Organizing Solutions
By Debbie Tremblay, A.K.A.
The Organizing Genie
The other day I spent time reminiscing
back to a simpler time when
the family would gather around the
television to watch such classics as
“Happy Days,” “The Partridge
Family,” “I Dream of Jeannie” and
my dad’s favorite, “Adam-12.” During
that time, we had a handful of
channels to choose from and here’s
the shocker, we had to physically get
up and change the channel!
Fast forward to the 20th century
and I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve
become quite accustomed to, and
enjoy, living in this fast paced world
of technology. The downside is
that every new gadget, gaming system,
TV, DVD player, arrives with
a remote control companion which
quickly becomes a clutter hazard all
over our living room coffee table.
It’s ironic that these convenient
devices called “remote” controllers
have a way of magically disappearing
to an undisclosed remote area
when you need them the most.
Many of us don’t even know how
to operate our TV without their
controllers, which is why it is so important
to create a designated home
for them.
Here are 4 simple remote control
organizing solutions that the whole
family can use to finally put an end
to that frustrating question, “Have
you seen the remote control?”
Sure, you can spend money on
a stylish remote control organizing
solution, but I suggest using an item
you may already have at home, such
as pretty wicker basket, decorative
Additionally, the night honored
newly-elected board members
who will serve a four-year term
on the Board of Directors, which
began on the first of January:
Shawn Alexander, Universal
Technical Institute
Kim Bassett, Norwood Hospital
Jim Donellon, Gray, Gray & Gray,
LLP
Adam Goodrich,
Marathon
Physical
Therapy and
Sports Medicine
Deb Vona,
Dedham Medical
Associates/
Atrius Health.
vase, photo box, clear shoe box, etc.
Why spend the extra money when
you can put something else to good
use for once?
Label each remote and place it
on the same shelf with their appropriate
counterpart.
Clear plastic ‘over the door’ shoe
organizers are perfect for organizing
remote controls and video game
Place all instruction manuals in
Balance in Life-Help for Vestibular Disorders
By John Vacovec, Physical
Therapist and CEO of Physical
Therapy and Sports Rehab
The loss of any of the five
senses is distressing, and one of
the more frightening is the loss
of balance & equilibrium due to
a vestibular disorder. This condition
occurs when there’s a disruption
of the vestibular system that
involves the inner ear and brain
which controls eye movement and
balance. As a result, an individual
may experience dizziness, vertigo,
balance problems, and other
symptoms.
An estimated 35 % of all adults
in the U.S. have suffered from
some type of vestibular dysfunction,
and it can also occur in children.
Physical therapy can help
by retraining the brain to recognize
and process signals from the
vestibular system in coordination
with vision and proprioception.
There is Always Hope
A vestibular disorder can result
from an injury, stroke, neurological
problem or even some chronic
diseases such as diabetes. It can result
from cataracts, aging or even
a viral infection. Symptoms can
range from mild to severe and
have a significant impact on a person’s
quality of life.
When the condition appears
in children, it affects the child’s
balance; motor development and
unstable eye focusing makes it difficult
to learn to read. Typically
unscreened, many children go undiagnosed.
Vestibular rehabilitation therapy
(VRT) offers hope for those
suffering with vestibular disorders.
The physical therapist will create
a treatment plan of exercise that
addresses the underlying causes
and alleviates any compensatory
behaviors an individual may
have developed. VRT can be used
alone or in conjunction with other
therapeutic techniques.
Regain Your Balance
Patients will learn ways to compensate
for their deficits. Individuals
learn new ways to move and
perform tasks that reduces the potential
for falls and injuries. Therapists
also monitor patients for signs
of emotional disturbances, anxiety
and depression, all of which are
common for individuals suffering
from this disorder.
Vestibular disorders can be
temporary or long-term and the
techniques available through
physical therapy improve overall
quality of life. If you or someone
you know has complained of balance
or vestibular problems, call us
today-we have a Balance/Vertigo
Program to address your needs!
Lost Pets, They Are Everywhere
Lately I have seen newly posted
signs, FB posts and have even had
people stop me on the street telling
me they lost or found a pet. I
can’t tell people enough that it’s a
big cruel world out there for our
animals if they are not supervised
and properly ID’d. Please consider
micro-chipping your four legged
creature and always supervise their
outdoor activity, be it on leash for
our dogs or on a harness or in a
fully fenced in outdoor porch for
our kitties.
People can’t believe the stories
I tell them about lost and found
pets. Here we go.....a friendly, outdoor,
un-neutered cat was recently
lost. He always came in each night
but did not this one night (a story
I hear way too often), that night it
snowed, there was no sign of the
cat for the next two days. Foot
prints indicated there was a cat
around but there were other outdoor
cats in the area so there was
no way to know. After reaching
out to the Animal Control and
some neighbors there was no sign
of the beloved kitty. A few more
days went by and suddenly as the
owner left her yard she spotted her
cat in the window of a car driving
in front of her. Yes, a neighbor had
taken in the cat that cold, snowy
night and felt the cat was better
off with them than back outside.
The neighbor was in the midst of
taking the cat to an open-admission
shelter as they felt the owner
did not care about the cat based
on it being left out side, being unneutered
and not ID’ing it in any
way. The cat is back with his owners,
getting neutered next week
and the owner is trying be more
aware of his activities. I am confident
with a little effort and time
this kitty could be a safe happy
indoor kitty also. You just never
know where your lost cat or dog
could be so don’t risk their life!
Micro-chip, supervise and protect
the four-legged pet you call your
best friend.
Meet Pepper:
This stray was found homeless
by a nice family. After efforts
were made to locate the owners
there was no success. After several
months of living with the family it
has become apparent that one of
the family cats was not liking the
presence of this new member and
made her life miserable. Pepper is
now searching for a home to call
her “forever” home where she can
be loved, cared for and become a
part of the family dynamics forever.
She looks like a gray ragdoll
and is extremely loving. Pepper
would prefer not to be bullied by a
dominant cat so consider your pet
dynamics before considering her.
You can meet Pepper by emailing
Bay State Animal Cooperative
at info@baystateanimals.org.
Though we are low on cats in
our adoption center, at this time
we have special needs, FIV and
feline leukemia kitties needing forever
homes in foster care. We will
be full unfortunately before you
know it, so feel free to submit your
application in advance and check
in regularly to see what we have
available seeking a loving home.
Bay State Animal
Cooperative is:
• Seeking experienced dedicated
individuals to join their
executive team, board members
needed to enhance our
capabilities and coordinators
to take care of administrative
roles within the organization.
PET CORNER
• Seeking an accountant to generate
non-profit 990 returns.
• Seeking a Veterinarian to perform
required weekly physical
exams of our adoptable cats at
Petco in Norwood, 1-2 hours
per week, flexible, requiring a
Mass State License.
• Seeking shelter space for special
needs cats.
Please let us know how you can
help!
The Norwood Starbucks on Rte. 1
Northbound received an unexpected
drive through patron shortly after midnight
on February 22. When Norwood police
responded to notification of a motor
vehicle, they discovered a vehicle had been
driven into the building causing significant
damage to its structure.
The driver was not on the scene. Several
hours later, 22 year old Brockton woman
entered the Norwood Police Station stating she
was the driver of the vehicle. At press time, her
identification was not known but according to
Norwood police, she will be summoned to a court
date on charges stemming from the incident.
Debt-To-Income Ratio
Why is it important in for obtaining
a mortgage?
When it comes to getting a
mortgage, many people think
their credit score is the most important
number associated with
their name. While a person’s credit
score is important, along with how
much money they have saved,
there’s another number that is just
as important: Debt-To-Income
(DTI) ratio.
A DTI ratio is one of the ways
lenders measure your ability to
make payments toward money
you’ve borrowed. Your DTI ratio
is expressed as a percentage and is
comprised of your total minimum
monthly obligations divided by
your gross monthly income. Your
total minimum monthly obligation
is made up of your minimum
monthly payments for car loans,
students, credit card debt, home
equity loans, mortgages and any
other recurring debt you might
have.
When you’re in the market for
a mortgage, it’s imperative that
you know your DTI. To calculate,
you must take into account
all of our monthly debt payments
and divide the total by your gross
monthly income (the amount of
money you earn before taxes).
For example, if you pay $1,500 a
month for your mortgage, $100 a
month for an auto loan and $400
a month for the rest of your debts,
you pay a total of $2,000 per
month toward debts. If your gross
monthly income is $6,000, then
your DTI ratio is 33%.
It’s important to remember
that your minimum monthly debt
is the minimum you are required
to pay each month. For example,
if you owe $3,000 on a high-interest
credit card and your minimum
payment on that specific card is
$150, only that $150 is going to
figure into your DTI. Keep in
mind, however, that paying only
the minimum amount on your
debts can make them grow larger.
A good rule of thumb is the
lower your DTI, the better. A DTI
less than 50% is generally considered
workable in the mortgage
industry. However, if your DTI is
higher than 50%, you may have a
difficult time qualifying for a mortgage.
If your DTI is 20% or lower,
you’ll be able to borrow more and
have more options than someone
with a higher DTI.
If your DTI isn’t to your liking,
you’ve got two options. First,
you can increase your income so
you have more money to work
with. Second, reduce your debts
to enable your existing income to
go further. For the second option,
focus on paying off your credit
cards and other loans and avoid
taking on additional debts.
If you’re in the market for a
new mortgage, don’t overlook
your DTI. Many people assume
that if they have a good credit
score and good income, getting a
mortgage will be no problem. The
THE PATH TO YOUR FIRST
HOME STARTS HERE!
fact is that a good DTI also has a
huge impact on getting you qualified
for a mortgage.
Dr. Janet Limke, President of the
Norwood Toastmasters is a physiatrist;
As the Medical Director of the
she often gives educational
lectures to peers about issues such as
the Opioid Crisis.
“Toastmasters has made speaking
fun and exciting,” Limke said.
“I now have the skills that allow me
to really focus on my audience and
what they need rather than my nervousness.
I am much more effective
at relaying information today than
when I first joined Toastmasters.”
Limke says that the environment
in a Toastmasters club is friendly
and supportive.
“Everyone at a Toastmasters
meeting feels welcome and valued,
from complete beginners to advanced
speakers,” Limke said. “It
is a multi-generational and multicultural
to people from other countries for
whom English is a second language.
Seeking Norwood High
School Athletic Hall of Fame
Nominations
The Norwood High School Athletic Hall
of Fame is looking for nominations for
the Class of 2016.
TOASTMASTERS
continued from page 16
Student-athletes, teams,
coaches and special contributors
are eligible. Candidates
must meet the following criteria:
student-athletes must have
graduated from Norwood High
School, attended NHS for more
than two years and it has been
10 years since their class graduated.
Coaches must have worked
at Norwood High for at least
seven years and have completed
their coaching career. Teams
must have achieved a significant
accomplishment. Special contributors
are individuals who
have made a considerable contribution
of time and energy to
ing skills to express yourself in a
variety of situations. This opens up
a world of new possibilities: giving
better work presentations; leading or
participating in meetings more confidently;
speaking more smoothly
off the cuff; even handling one-onone
interactions with family, friends
and colleagues more positively.
“In a club meeting, you practice
giving prepared speeches as well as
brief impromptu presentations,”
Vinu Kuriakose, Vice President of
Membership said. “There is no rush
and no pressure. The Toastmasters
program allows you to progress at
your own pace. You can’t very well
practice these skills in your work environment,
but you can at a Toastmasters
meeting. At Toastmasters,
we do constructive evaluation. The
feedback is invaluable. Each time
you give a prepared speech, an evaluator
will point out strengths as well
as suggest improvements. We look
at body language, facial expressions
and the like.”
“We even have a ‘filler counter,’”
Vice President of Public Relations,
Kathy Heanue chuckled.
“You know, someone who counts
the ahs’s, um’s, ya-know’s and other
things people fill their sentences with
when they are uncomfortable or
searching for the next word. Counting
at meetings actually helps you to
practice listening skills as well. Public
speaking made me very uncomfortable,
especially when I was beyond
my comfort zone. Toastmasters has
helped me build confidence. And it
is a lot of fun! Members speak about
some very interesting topics.”
President Limke is excited about
Norwood High School Athletics.
For more information and
nomination forms, visit the
Norwood High School Athletic
Department web page, www.
norwoodmustangs.com. Submit
nominations in writing to the
Norwood Hall of Fame Committee,
Attn: Jonathan Longley,
Athletic Director, 245 Nichols
St., Norwood MA 02062. The
deadline for nominations is April
30, 2016.
The enshrinement ceremony
will be held in November.
the upcoming International Speech
Contest which starts on March 8.
For more information about the
contest, go to http://norwoodtoastmaster.org/
Meetings are held at the Knights
of Columbus Hall, 572 Nichols St.,
the second and fourth Tuesday of
“Guests are always welcome!”
Limke said. “All you need to bring is
Norwood Sports
NHS Hockey Player Erin Kelly
by Christopher Tremblay
She was a wee second grader
when she first laced up the skates
to take to the ice to play hockey,
but it was the years prior that got
Erin Kelly to actually thinking
about taking the chance at playing
the sport. Her older brother,
four years her elder, and sister,
two years older, had already been
skating around the ice playing ice
hockey.
“I had been at the rink for so
long watching them play I finally
decided to give it a try myself,”
the Norwood athlete said. “Almost
immediately I was hooked and
haven’t looked back.”
Kelly would join local hockey
team Norwood Nuggets, and advance
though their system and
eventually moved onto the Boch
Blazers, a fall league she played
every year through high school to
help her improve.
girls the team looks up to, things
were not always easy.
“That freshman year I didn’t
know what to expect, the only
thing that I could count on was my
sister (Emily) to get me through it,”
Kelly said. “It was tough as I didn’t
get to play all that much that first
year, but by my sophomore year I
was one of four defenseman to get
a regular shift on the ice.”
Norwood Coach Tim Coskren
believes having an older sister on
the ice really helped her along that
first year.
“She’s been a solid four-year
player for us, but as a freshman
she was overwhelmed,” Coskren
said. “Having her sister Emily, one
of Norwood’s top scorers during
her career there helped her to get
through that first year and helped
her fit in.” Erin didn’t get too
much ice time that year, but over
the years she improved dramatically
where we relied on her quite
a lot.”
As one of Norwood’s top three
defenders this winter, the senior
has logged an average of 38 minutes
of ice time per game out of a
possible 45, becoming the anchor
of the blue line. With that being
the case, she had to be ready for
the season.
Kelly not only knew that she
would have to be in pristine shape
to put in the minutes that would be
required of her, she also wanted to
make sure her team was ready as
well.
“Coming into the season I
knew that I had to work extremely
hard taking no time off,” the senior
captains said. “As a captain
I also knew that I would have a
big leadership role with this team
keeping them working hard at all
times as well if we were to be successful.”
During a season in which
Coskren tabs as a rebuilding one,
Kelly has definitely done her part
to keep this team together and
moving in the right direction for
the future.
“Playing with two sophomores,
Erin has definitely keep things in
check,” the coach said. “She has
great vision and sees the ice and
what’s developing in front of her.
She’s always at the right spot at the
right time and the younger girls
are seeing that.”
Although a defender, Kelly sees
that she has grown into somewhat
of an offensive player this winter
to give her team a boost in any
way she can.
“As a defender growing up over
the past four years, I’ve turned into
a offensive defender, one that likes
to rush the puck up the ice and
shoot whenever I can,” Kelly said.
“You can never have enough scoring.
If given the opportunity, I like
to take chances that will hopefully
help my team.”
While scoring has been something
that she has thrown into her
arsenal, she’s not lighting things
up on a regular basis. Last year
she scored three goals for the
Mustangs, and at the time of the
interview, already netted five this
season; something her coach likes.
“Erin can hit the open player
with the perfect pass, but she has
also become offensive minded as
we don’t have that top goal scorer,”
Coskren said. “We’ve only got
25 goals as a team in our first 13
games. I’ll take anything she can
give us. She has tremendous stick
handling skills and makes good
decisions with the puck offensively,
but she can still get back in time to
get into position defensively.”
During her first three years,
Kelly was lucky enough to taste
post-season play as the Mustangs
went a combined 35-16-9 during
that span. Unfortunately, this winter
will come to an end following
their last regular season contest as
Norwood has already been eliminated.
“It stinks that we will not be
going to have a chance to play in
the tournament this year,” Kelly
said. “Our remaining goal over
the last few games will be to go out
and have fun while trying to win
and hopefully we can ruin some
other team’s chances of getting
into the tournament.”
When her Norwood hockey
career does come to an end, it will
probably be the end of ice hockey
for Kelly on a professional type of
level. The senior may play club
hockey in college, but has no plans
to play for whatever school she
decides to attend. Unfortunately,
all good things must come to an
end and Erin Kelly’s phenomenal
hockey career is on the horizon.
It’s just too bad that the senior
couldn’t have enjoyed one more
run through the tournament.

Norwood Sports
Norwood Gymnast Amanda Olbrys
by Christopher Tremblay
For many athletes, it’s an older
brother or sister that got them interested
in a particular sport, but
in Norwood gymnast Amanda
Olbrys, it is quite the opposite.
Olbrys first became interested in
gymnastics in the fifth grade while
watching her younger sister’s
meet; from there it was true love.
“It was something that I liked,
watching her perform,” Olbrys
said. “It looked interesting and
when they started doing flips, I
knew that I wanted to try it out.”
Not long after, the now Norwood
freshman joined the Broderick
Gymnastic Academy, the
same Karen Broderick who is the
Norwood High School Gymnastics
Coach. Through the academy,
Olbrys tried each and every event
so by the time she entered the high
school this past September she was
able to compete in any of the four
events. Being able to do everything
also gave her a better chance at
making the varsity squad.
The freshman, who will try out
for the softball team this spring as
a pitcher and was a member of
the cheerleading team this fall, had
no real difficulties at the gymnastics
tryouts.
“The high school gymnastics
tryouts were not all that bad as I
had been doing this for such a long
time,” Olbrys said. “It was nothing
like cheerleading, where I was
very nervous. With gymnastics, I
had the confidence that I could
make the team and just because
I attended Broderick Academy, I
didn’t get any special preference.”
Coach Broderick found the
young Olbrys to be a shining star
in the team’s future.
“Amanda competes as one of
our two all-arounds (bars, vault,
floor and beams), where she has
the highest average in three of the
four events and second highest on
the other for the team,” the Norwood
Coach said. “Usually not
many freshmen come out for and
make the team, but there were
more than usual this year with
Amanda leading the way, which
looks very bright for our future.”
According to the first year varsity
gymnast, she averages about
an eight on all four events, but it
is the floor and vault where she
excels. After taking a year off
from the bar, she is now trying to
reacquaint herself with the event
while still looking to improve on
the other three events.
“Taking part in the meets as
an all-around says that Coach
Broderick has confidence in me,”
Olbrys said. “I know that there
are some older girls on the team
that can also compete in all four
events, but I think they realize my
talent and are not mad at me for
doing it.”
While many athletes come to
practice and just go through the
motions, Olbrys is not that type of
individual – practice or meet she
gives it 100%.
“Right off the bat she showed
up with a great work ethic,” Broderick
said. “Most girls tend to ease
up after they make the team, but
Amanda hasn’t stopped yet. From
the time she steps into the gym
until she leaves, Amanda is continuously
working. Even when she’s
finished with her routines she asks
what else she can do to get better;
she wants to be able to improve
her level of difficulty and up her
scores.”
In order to improve her craft
she must work hard, but in doing
so also improves her team’s
chances of winning.
“I’ve always felt that I needed
to work hard at my skill,” the
young gymnast said. “I want to
improve and use that skill to help
my teammates out. I don’t mind
working hard to push my routine
to the next level, I’ll do whatever I
need to do. I’ve know a lot of the
girls on the team for a long time,
whether through gymnastics or
cheerleading so they know and understand
what I can do and how I
go about doing it.”
Coming into the season, the
Norwood gymnastic team has not
had that much luck in terms of
winning, but this year the squad
was finally able to grab its first
win in many a years. In doing so,
Olbrys has accomplished one of
her goals.
“Coming into the year my
goal was to get better, but more
importantly help the team win,
which we did,” Olbrys said.
“This team hadn’t won in such a
long time and it’s great to be part
of that success. We knew that is
was going to be tough, especially
competing against year round
gymnasts who are a level 8-10. At
Norwood, most of the girls don’t
belong to gymnastic clubs and
compete all year round; they’re
just doing it as fun.”
STRATEGIES
DAMAGE CONTROL
George Grant
When it comes to protecting a policyholder’s vehicle, an automobile policy’s “collision”
coverage reimburses for damage not covered by the other driver’s policy. “Comprehensive” covers
theft or damage from fire, hail, falling rocks, etc. Both coverages having deductibles that range
from zero to $1,000, with the lower out-of-pocket deductibles having the highest premiums. While
many policyholders opt for higher deductibles that lower the cost of annual premiums, doing so
only pays off if no accidents occur. With this in mind, policyholders with high deductibles should
set aside enough money to cover the deductible in case it is needed. If not, consider it to be money
5.897” wide
saved. This should at least be one more incentive to drive safely and carefully.
At AMBROSE & GRANT Insurance Agency, your needs will be carefully and completely
identified – and then professionally and expertly satisfied. We are an independent insurance
agency that provides all types of insurance coverage for your personal or business risk. Call us at
NOTE: It is sometimes recommend that collision and/or comprehensive coverage be dropped
when the annual premium equals or exceeds 10% of a vehicle’s cash value.
Norfolk County
Real Estate off to a
Good Start
by Michele DeFazio Taranto
The first month of 2016 demonstrated
a possible shining light
for the Norfolk County real estate
market. According to Norfolk
County Registrar of Deeds Williams
P. O’Donnell, the month of
January showed positive numbers
in both total transactions and volume
compared to January, 2015
statistics.
“I am pleased to report that
January, 2016 real estate sales
activity showed solid gains in
both the total of number of real
estate transactions and total dollar
volume of real estate activity,
including commercial and
residential sales, compared to the
same month in 2015,” Register
O’Donnell said.
Quantity of sales and volume
showed impressive statistics with
substantial increases from last
year while homeowners reaped
the benefit of better average sale
prices.
“The number of real estate
sales, both commercial and residential,
increased a whopping
28% in January,” O’Donnell said.
“The average sales price during
the month was $680,350, a
4% increase compared to January,
2015. Total dollar volume of
commercial and residential sales
also showed solid gains, increasing
an impressive 34% to $514.3
million.”
The lending market, however,
did not experience such positive
numbers across the board.
“The lending market was a
mixed bag for the month of January,”
O’Donnell said. “The total
number of mortgages recorded in
January was 1,982, a modest 5%
increase. However, total mortgage
financing actually fell 7% coming
in at $764 million. We will need to
watch this number closely to see
if individuals and business begin
to think twice before borrowing
money.”
Whether better educated
homeowners or the rise in sales,
Homestead recordings also increased
in January, 2016 by 23%.
The Homestead Act provides limited
protection on the forced sale
of a personal primary residence
to settle unsecured debt up to
$500,000. For more information
on the Homestead Act, visit he
Registry’s website at www.norfolkdeeds.org.
Foreclosure activity in Norfolk
County also saw a reduction
in year over year numbers, down
25%. In January, 97 Notice to
Foreclose Mortgage filings were
recorded as compared to 59 in
January 2015.
“The Registry of Deeds continues
to work with its partners
Quincy Community Action
Programs and Neighbor Works
Southern Mass to help homeowners
who have received a
Notice to Foreclose Mortgage,”
O’Donnell said. “Another option
for homeowners who are facing
the challenges of meeting their
monthly mortgage payment is to
contact the Attorney General’s
HomeCorps program for assistance.”
