The Hurricane represents Hurricane II aircraft Z3427, 

No 121 ‘Eagle’ Squadron colours, circa July 1941 – 

November 1941. It is based at RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey 

flying on East Coast convoy patrols and the 

occasional scramble, and later fighter sweeps. 

The Spitfire represents Spitfire L.F. IX ‘MH486/FT-E’, 

in No 43 Squadron Colours, as flown from August 

1943 to the end of the war, mainly in the Middle 

East and Italy. 

Both original aircraft were powered by variants of 

the Rolls Royce Merlin V12 engine of around 1200hp 

(Hurricane II) or 1,700hp (Spitfire LF IX).
