The Art of Business Award is bestowed each year to a special<br />

individual who has made an over and above contribution to the<br />

“business side” of the salon industry. “Several industry awards are<br />

granted to those whose brilliance is in the fashion arena, so we<br />

felt it fitting to have an award to focus attention on the category of<br />

Good Business,” says Howard Hafetz, Art of Business CEO.<br />

This year’s honoree has been a shining light and a beacon of<br />

inspiration to thousands of salon professionals in the U.S., Canada,<br />

and worldwide! The late great Don distinguished himself as both<br />

a true “thought-leader” and “cheer-leader.” He was a role model<br />

for all in beauty. Don hit the “cycle” from great stylist to salon<br />

owner, to owning multiple salons, a brief stint as a distributor,<br />

and in the end, co-founded Eufora with his wife, Beth Bewley over<br />

13 years ago. Don always had the hairdresser at heart. He often<br />

said…“I never wanted to be the “expert,” always striving to be “the<br />

student.” He encouraged others to not only keep learning, but to<br />

teach and teach better than anyone else!<br />

Don saw things in people they didn’t see in themselves. He was<br />

an inspirer, big brother, and father image to so many. For all of<br />

these reasons, we have selected Don Bewley as Art of Business<br />

Honoree 2016.

HOW TO BUILD A 12 MONTH MARKETING CALENDAR<br />

Just the title can sound daunting to the<br />

most organized of souls. To a creative,<br />

right brained person, it can seem like a<br />

distant, hypothetical thing followed by<br />

a chuckle and a shoulder shrug. But we<br />

are here to tell you that it’s not as hard to<br />

create as it seems.<br />

You actually have a harvest of potential<br />

themes to work with. When creating<br />

a marketing calendar as part of your<br />

salon business plan go off of the<br />

following themes: seasonal, monthly<br />

holidays, community events, charities,<br />

manufacturer/distributor driven, new<br />

services and standard promotions. Let’s<br />

break each one down and in the order by<br />

which you should build your calendar.<br />

• Standard promotions: It is smart<br />

business to have a referral promotion<br />

and a rebooking promotion in place on<br />

an ongoing basis. You can always add<br />

a contest a few times a year at specific<br />

times to support peak months and<br />

periods where you need to drive client<br />

traffic.<br />

• Monthly Holidays: Go through<br />

the calendar and look for holidays you<br />

can create marketing themes around.<br />

• Seasonal: As we move through<br />

spring, summer, fall and winter there<br />

are plenty of services and products<br />

designed to support your customers.<br />

The seasons provide a good period of<br />

time in your calendar where you can run<br />

promotions. For example, if you are a<br />

nail technician, during the winter you can<br />

focus on marketing winter nail art with<br />

a free paraffin hand or foot treatment.<br />

If you are a hairstylist you can drive<br />

your color business in the summer with<br />

a promotion that packages the service<br />

with color shampoo and conditioner. You<br />

get the jest. Make a list of what services<br />

and accompanying products you could<br />

put together for each season. Next,<br />

position the promotion to start at the<br />

beginning of each season and have it<br />

run for 8 weeks which should cover a big<br />

chunk of that season.<br />

Seasons will also include the following:<br />

wedding season, graduation season,<br />

back to school, proms, etc. Based on<br />

the services you provide, you can take<br />

advantage of any or all of these seasons<br />

to drive your business.<br />

• Community events: Look at events<br />

or celebrations that happen local to your<br />

area that you may want to be a part of<br />

such as town fairs or parades.<br />

• Manufacturer/distributor driven:<br />

What are your manufacturers and<br />

distributors partners offering from<br />

a promotional standpoint that you<br />

can take advantage of? Usually these<br />

programs are turnkey, easy to use and<br />

provide a boost, not to mention the<br />

back end support you can get from your<br />

consultants. You can also look to any<br />

new product launches they announce<br />

and put a promotion in your calendar to<br />

coincide with it.<br />

• Charities: Can you attach yourself<br />

to a walkathon or launch a cut-a-thon?<br />

A popular charity every year is breast<br />

cancer awareness month in October.<br />

You can put a special together where a<br />

portion of sales proceeds go towards a<br />

charity.<br />

• New services: Anytime you make<br />

a choice to add a new service to your<br />

repertoire you have an opportunity to<br />

put a promotion in place.<br />

As you can see, you have plenty to work<br />

with. Start at the top of the list and begin<br />

to fill your calendar for the year. As you<br />

do, here are a few important guidelines:<br />

• Run promotions in 6-8 week cycles.<br />

The longer they run the less impact they<br />

have. This is why you want to add some<br />

punch to your referral and rebooking<br />

promotions throughout the year.<br />

• You can run more than one promotion<br />

at the same time as long as they differ.<br />

For example, if you are offering a retail<br />

driven promotion for St. Patrick Day it<br />

doesn’t make sense to offer another<br />

special that includes retail during the<br />

same time period.<br />

• Meet with distributor during your<br />

calendar building process to generate ideas.<br />

• Don’t be attached! Your calendar<br />

is a starting point, if you need to move<br />

something around or come up with a<br />

more effective or exciting promotion<br />

don’t be afraid to change things up.<br />

Remember, business fluctuates and you<br />

need to be prepared to move with it, not<br />

against it.<br />

• Keep your budget in mind. As a rule,<br />

spend 2-4% of total sales each month<br />

on marketing efforts. This knowledge<br />

can help make decisions on what you<br />

offer and when. For example, marketing<br />

a customer event in your salon during a<br />

slow volume time of year may not help<br />

you financially due to a lower income<br />

stream during that period of the year.<br />

Use your budget percentage wisely and<br />

spread the monies out as you need.<br />

• Get your team involved! Create<br />

a marketing committee that meets<br />

monthly to discuss existing promotions,<br />

troubleshoot issues and generate ideas<br />

for future programs.<br />

We hope this gives you just the direction<br />

and confidence you need to sit down and<br />

think 12 months ahead. Once complete,<br />

you will feel like a big weight has been<br />

lifted, you’ll have a clear path to walk<br />

down and you will see the type of results<br />

you deserve. Do yourself the favor and<br />

take the time to give yourself this peace<br />

of mind while giving your clients fun<br />

and creative incentives that keep them<br />

LIFE’S TOO SHORT…<br />

Life’s too short to put up<br />

with people on your team<br />

who take all the joy out<br />

of coming to work.<br />

You know the type I mean. The individuals<br />

‘hell bent’ on ruining it for everyone else.<br />

Often they might come with slightly above<br />

average ability but with supercharged<br />

ego’s they run amok and destroy team<br />

morale and poison everyone in their path.<br />

I occasionally still meet them in other<br />

peoples salons, unfortunately I even<br />

employed the odd one over the years,<br />

they don’t start out like that but for<br />

whatever reason left unchecked they are<br />

cancerous to the business and if you let<br />

them be, they will do untold damage in<br />

the process.<br />

I learned a long time ago that you can’t<br />

change people, but they can change<br />

themselves ...if they want to. The problem<br />

is, often they don’t want to.<br />

They lack the courage to do it on their<br />

own, they lack the respect to follow the<br />

leader and they lack the common sense<br />

to see that they are destroying their own<br />

reputation in the process.<br />

Often the leader has let them get out of<br />

control through some misguided idea<br />

that because they are creative people<br />

you have to accept the superstar ego’s<br />

that go with it, nothing could be further<br />

from the truth.<br />

The challenge then becomes how to get<br />

them back as a valuable part of the team.<br />

In my experience often it’s not possible to<br />

reign the out of control ego back in, the<br />

damage has been done and the energy<br />

and time you will then be spending on<br />

that one person is out of all proportion to<br />

what you will ever get back.<br />

As salon owners or managers often the<br />

most important thing is to learn from<br />

negative situations so that you can either<br />

prevent them happening again or at least<br />

limit the damage when it does. So in this<br />

instance ask yourself; ‘Why have they<br />

become like this?’<br />

Often it’s because they think that’s<br />

how they are meant to behave, so with<br />

no parameters they start to think of<br />

themselves as far more creative, far more<br />

important, far more valuable, far more of<br />

everything than what they actually are.<br />

The real shame is that often if these<br />

people were managed properly from the<br />

outset they respond really well to it. You<br />

have to be firm and consistent from day<br />

one, then they’ll have the potential to<br />

become far better than if left up to their<br />

own ego’s. They may not always like it,<br />

but hopefully they might recognize that<br />

they need it.<br />

The really talented people in any industry<br />

are usually; extremely professional,<br />

positive, very hard working, respectful of<br />

others, and have a humility about their<br />

ability. People like that are a real pleasure<br />

to be around.<br />

So always ask yourself, ‘What can I learn<br />

from this?’<br />

I always look for the positive message,<br />

when you have people like this on your<br />

team, it’s not just about their short<br />

comings, ‘it’s about you’. What can you<br />

learn from the situation? Because if you<br />

don’t learn from it, then it will inevitably<br />

happen again.<br />

• What did you do as the owner/<br />

manager that let it get this far?<br />

• Did you employ them on the<br />

wrong criteria, i.e. skill or<br />

appearance and not attitude?<br />

• Did they have a written<br />

job description?<br />

• Did you give them a proper induction<br />

and explain the salon culture and values?<br />

• Did you give them regular feedback,<br />

appraisals and target meetings?<br />

• Do you have a proper procedure for<br />

coaching and issuing verbal warnings?<br />

• Did you let it go on for too long<br />

because you didn’t know how to<br />

reel them in?<br />

• Do you feel trapped because they<br />

bring in a good revenue?<br />

Occasionally I meet salon owners who<br />

have lost the joy and passion for their<br />

business because of people on their team<br />

who are destroying it from within.<br />

It’s never worth it, take control, give them<br />

ultimatums, don’t make threats you are<br />

not prepared to carry out, get the right<br />

legal advice and manage them out of<br />

the business, firmly but fairly, you’ll never<br />

regret it.<br />
