The refined side of oil & gas
February 2016
North Atlantic is a flexible and responsive oil refinery with the assets and the
attitude to power through the pressures of a highly-cyclical and challenging
oil refining industry—an industry that is very much a global entity with tough
competition from peers all around the world.
With so many comparable refining facilities all fighting for top market
positioning, it is critical that we further develop our industry perks when and
where possible.
Our industry perks include a highly skilled workforce, clean fuel production, a
strategic geographic location on major shipping routes, and a flexible
infrastructure. Collectively those perks continue to reward us with well-earned
successes.
Our competitive position puts us right in the
middle of supply and demand
North Atlantic supplies the world’s fuel market needs. As market requirements
and crude supplies change, our refinery’s flexibility enables us to adjust our
crude intake and our petrol output to match market demands, as economics
dictate. We keep a close eye on crude and fuel market movements so that
we can identify changing trends and adjust our processes as needed.
Our refinery’s location on the south coast of Newfoundland and Labrador is
yet another of our industry advantages. We have direct access to fuel
markets in Europe and the United States, and crude oil markets in the Middle
East, the United States, and right here in our own province. We are centrallylocated
to accommodate the world’s major oil marketplaces, allowing us to

effectively and quickly supply the highest quality fuels including gasoline, jet,
home-heat, ultra-low-sulphur-diesel, and bunker. World regulations are now
demanding the very clean fuels that we’ve been producing for years.
About 90 per cent of the petroleum products we make are exported. The very
fuels we make right here on the island heat buildings in France, drive vehicles in
California, and power hundreds of jets flying overhead every day.
Of course our locally-made home-heat fuels also keep our neighbours warm
and our clean gasoline and diesel move vehicles all around our fine province.
We put our money where our innovations are
Since this refinery first opened in 1973, there have been great strides to turn the
facility into an even more efficient and safer operation with the latest in
technology, highly-trained employees, and the capacity to supply many
different products to many different markets worldwide.
As industry trends, market demands, and refining technologies change, we
have to change right along with them. With millions of dollars in upgrades and
new equipment already invested and much more to come, this facility’s
reliability and competitive advantages have greatly enhanced our product
yields, and increased throughput right across the board.
Right now, we are working on several projects to further increase our refinery’s
daily throughput to 130,000 barrels per day and beyond.
These changes, combined with our employees’ ownership of safe-work
practices, have rewarded us with a safety and environmental sensitivity that’s
well above par. And we’re not done yet.
We’ve also capitalized on innovations designed into our facility on the drawing
board. When this refinery was designed and constructed back in the early
1970s, oil was plentiful and easy to recover.
Back then, installing clean fuel technology and North America’s largest refinery

dock at a plant in Newfoundland and Labrador seemed unnecessary. As it
often does, time has revealed the advantages of those decisions.
Our clean fuel hydrocracking technology allows us to make low-sulphur clean
fuels from a variety of different crude stocks. And, having one of the nation’s
largest docks means we can take advantage of lower freight costs.
Larger ships can tie up directly at our ice-free dock all year round. Another of
our industry advantages.
While our achievements are impressive, we continue to work toward the more
challenging legislative regulations and goals of tomorrow.
Environmental protection means doing more
than required, sooner than we have to
We live in one of the world’s most pristine environments. Newfoundland &
Labrador is surrounded and inhabited by some of the world’s most populated
seabird sanctuaries, numerous species of whales and other marine life,
vegetation found nowhere else on the planet, and people who deeply love
this part of the world.
We continue to work daily to preserve and minimize our environmental
impact.
Over the years, we’ve cut air emissions, we’ve invested millions of dollars
protecting the land and water around us, and the sulphur we recover from
crude processing is exported for pharmaceutical and fertilizer uses.
We test and monitor the land, sea, and air in the neighbourhood each and
every day with the vigilance it deserves. Then we do it again, just to be sure.
Our responsiveness to any environmental issue, as rarely as it comes up, is swift
and proactive, and handled by a bunch of professional personnel. That’s part
of being a good neighbour.

Another part of being a good neighbour is giving back to the place in which
we live. Our generous community giving efforts focus mainly on education
and health. School breakfast programs, healthcare initiatives, and direct
local community support are high on our list of giving priorities. Our internal
scholarships are part of a very comprehensive employee benefits plan.
Safety is all in the attitude
At North Atlantic, we don’t have a workforce; we have a community that’s
600+ strong. They are highly skilled operators, engineers, trades people,
accountants, and a host of other things including scout leaders, hockey
coaches, and healthcare volunteers. They are active contributors to the
towns in which they live and to the company in which they work.
In all, our company contributes in excess of $200 million a year to the
provincial economy by way of wages and local procurement. How’s that for
a responsible and supportive neighbour!
On the safety side, according to workplace safety stats, we are one of the
safest work places in the province and in the industry worldwide. Some of
the greatest strides in worker safety have been made in the oil refining
industry because safety goes hand in glove with refining oil.
Our employees’ workplace safety performance is admirable. It’s a culture of
employees accepting responsibility for their own safety and that of their
coworkers. That’s how we can achieve industry-leading safety performance.
That’s a fact for which we have well-earned bragging rights.
North Atlantic’s attention to workplace safety, our many infrastructure
investments and upgrades, our impressive list of competitive advantages,
our strong and supportive owners—SilverRange—, and our top-notch
employees make for a growing success story.
Enough said.
