Thanks to your generosity, 2008-09 was the most successful fundraising year ever for 

Colorado School of Mines. We received the largest endowment gift in school history – 

$10 million from Hugh and Michelle Harvey – to bring the best and brightest scholars 

to Mines. Corporate and individual supporters contributed more than $8.5 million to 

complete the campaign for our new petroleum engineering building, Marquez Hall. 

And hundreds of alumni and friends sustained their connection to this distinctive 

university, bringing our annual fundraising total to more than $30 million. 

Such tremendous philanthropic support during the 

most trying economic times in decades makes a 

strong statement: The value of a Mines education never 

diminishes. Now, more than ever, our world demands 

the top-notch skills and creative persistence that our 

graduates and faculty possess. 

Last year’s difficult economy did have its impact 

on Colorado School of Mines, however. While our 

endowment fared better than many of our peers whose 

losses exceeded 20 percent, we incurred a 15.3 percent 

decline in endowment assets. And reduced tax revenues 

have further constrained the Colorado state budget, 

causing further cuts to public higher education funding 

that we do not expect will be restored in the near term. 

This report highlights the reasons for our confidence 

going forward, even as state support for higher 

education dwindles. Our forward-thinking alumni 

and friends continue to recognize that the impact 

of their generosity extends beyond the 

talented students and outstanding faculty 

at Mines—to members of the global 

community who benefit from their efforts 

to understand the earth, harness energy 

and sustain the environment.

hugh ’74, MS ’80 and Michelle harvey are firm believers in paying it forward. When 

asked about the motivation behind their record $10 million endowment gift to establish 

a scholars program, Hugh reflects on the act of generosity that brought him into 

the Mines community nearly 40 years ago. He came to Mines on a scholarship from 

Newmont Mining, which opened up countless opportunities for personal development 

and professional success. 

The harveys are doing the same for generations of 

future students through the harvey Scholars program, 

which attracts promising students of the highest caliber 

to Mines. “With this gift, Michelle and i want to help 

Colorado School of Mines develop a new generation 

of scientists and engineers who will not only build 

solid careers for themselves, but also make significant 

contributions to their communities and to society,” says 

hugh, co-founder of denver-based intrepid potash. 

The scholars program recognizes and rewards student 

merit in academic performance, character, leadership 

and service, and encourages excellence in academic 

and life pursuits. harvey Scholars receive awards 

covering full tuition and fees, plus enrichment grants for 

academic and professional activities and supplemental 

funding for a semester of international study. both 

Colorado residents and out-of-state students are 

eligible for the prestigious program. 

Michelle harvey is president of the harvey family 

foundation and a veteran supporter of the Jeffco/ 

gilpin Court Appointed Special Advocates 

program. “We’ve always felt very fortunate 

to have a strong and bonded family. This is 

our way of paying it forward,” says Michelle. 

“The harveys’ tremendous gift perfectly 

aligns with our strategic goal to sharpen 

Mines’ distinction in undergraduate 

education,” says president bill Scoggins. 

“The harvey Scholars program enhances 

our ability to compete with other top-tier 

universities for the most talented students 

and will greatly benefit the outstanding 

students who define Mines’ reputation.” 

Three first-year students make up the 

inaugural class of harvey Scholars, and 

each is eagerly pursuing the diverse 

opportunities Mines has to offer. Scott 

harper, who hails from Austin, Texas, 

currently has his sights set on a degree in 

metallurgical and materials engineering,

with aspirations to work either in space exploration or 

energy. “Our understanding of the universe is one of a 

few rapidly expanding horizons, and i would be proud 

to contribute to further understanding by designing 

materials to advance exploration,” he says. however, 

he adds, “if i could help the world by developing new 

energy technologies, i would be thrilled.” 

The harveys’ generosity is helping Kylie herzik, of 

houston, Texas, pursue her lifelong fascination with 

earthquakes by supporting her study at Mines. “i hope 

to find some way to make earthquakes my career—the 

intense power of the earth has always inspired me,” 

she says. 

georgie Zelenak, who plans a career in oceanography, 

has been impressed by the people she has met during 

her first few months as a harvey Scholar. “i’ve met 

so many amazing alumni and members of the Mines 

community, including Mr. and Mrs. harvey, of course, 

who truly inspire me with their stories of serving 

others and traveling the world,” says the fort Collins, 

Colorado native. 

With the largest-ever contribution to the Mines 

endowment through their family foundation, the 

harveys are investing in the education and enrichment 

of future generations of leaders. by passing along some 

of their good fortune through the scholars program, 

they both honor the role of Mines in their successes 

and inspire others to do the same. 

an inTrepid venTure 

Hugh Harvey earned his bachelor’s degree 

in mining engineering in 1974 and master’s 

degree in petroleum engineering in 1980, 

both from Mines. In the late 1980s he formed 

Harvey Operating and Production Company, 

and in 1996, created Intrepid Oil and Gas 

with business partner Robert Jornayvaz. 

After acquiring several productive oil wells 

in the West, they took an interest in a potash 

mine near Moab, Utah that was closing due 

to declining production. Convinced that the 

decline was due to inefficient operation rather 

than true depletion, they set out to find a better 

technique for potash mining. 

The new idea came to Harvey out of the blue, 

informed by his experience in both mining and 

petroleum engineering. By using horizontal 

drilling techniques to create a lattice of 

boreholes throughout the potash-bearing rock, 

then percolating water through the honeycomb, 

they could dissolve the potash and pump 

it up to evaporation ponds on the surface. 

Introducing horizontal drilling methods to the 

standard solution mining process enabled the 

partners to nearly double production after 

purchasing the mine in 2000. Following their 

breakthrough at the Moab mine, Harvey and 

Jornayvaz formed intrepid potash (NYSE:IPI), 

which went public in 2008 and is now the 

largest potash producer in the U.S. with 750 

employees and four operating mines.

“I see part of my role here as that of a mentor, doing the critical work of 

preparing graduates who will help fill the increasing gap of qualified scientists 

and engineering professionals, particularly in North America,” says Harrison 

Western professor Corby g. anderson, who joined the Mines community in August. 

“It’s these young people who will solve the problems and challenges we face in energy 

and materials, in the U.S. and across the globe.” 

Mining engineering alumnus al provost ’62 recently 

established the harrison Western professorship of 

Metallurgical and Materials engineering, named for 

his company, at Mines. “With the harrison Western 

professorship, our business is able to maintain ongoing 

connections with the academic community specializing 

in areas that are of key importance to our work,” says 

provost. “We hope this new position will help not only 

to expand the school’s expertise in hydrometallurgy, but 

also that professor Anderson and his team will create 

new knowledge to further hw process Technologies, 

inc.’s work as the world leader in industrial process 

water reclamation and reuse.” 

professor Anderson is excited to take on a position 

more engaged academically with students and faculty, 

after 12 years as a research center director at Montana 

Tech. “part of my motivation for taking on this position, 

aside from applying my expertise in hydrometallurgy 

to Mines’ unique mission, was to become more fully 

entrenched in the academic side of things,” he says. 

Anderson is part of the university’s kroll institute for 

extractive Metallurgy and a new National 

Science foundation-funded partnership 

to develop a center for recycling research 

and education, which collaborates with 

industry to achieve materials sustainability. 

With more than 30 years experience in 

the global mining, minerals and metals 

industries, and expertise in extractive 

metallurgy, mineral processing, and waste 

minimization and recycling, professor 

Anderson is well-suited to help advance 

teaching and research in Mines’ focus 

areas. “i came into this new professorship 

position to apply my background and 

strengths in ways that will help enhance 

Mines’ capabilities in the extractive 

industries,” he says. “And i am grateful for 

Al provost and hW process Technologies’ 

foresight in creating this opportunity – for 

me, for Mines and for industry.” 

ThirST For 

Knowledge 

Bringing renowned experts like peter gleick to campus adds 

vitality to the Mines academic experience. Gleick, an authority on 

water sustainability and head of the Pacific Institute for Studies in 

Development, Environment, and Security in Oakland, California, was 

the featured speaker at the 2009 Young Environmental Symposium, 

an annual lecture event made possible by contributions from the 

late Herb ’39 and Dodie Young. In addition to the support the 

Youngs provided for the lecture series during their lifetimes, the 

couple’s entire estate was bequeathed to Mines and will sustain 

the symposium for years to come. 

“Bringing a standout in the field of water research to campus 

for this year’s Young Symposium was especially relevant 

considering our global concern over water resources. Since my 

work focuses on water treatment, I was especially encouraged 

that his talk brought water issues into focus for members of the 

Mines community.”

waTer FiTneSS 

One of Mines’ newest research centers, the 

Advanced Water Technology Center (AQWATEC), 

is leading the way in advanced wastewater 

treatment research, thanks in large part to 

private support. aqua-aerobic Systems, a leader 

in the design, manufacturing and application of 

municipal and industrial wastewater systems, has 

contributed equipment, funding and technical 

support for a wastewater test site at Mines 

Park and an on-site demonstration wastewater 

treatment prototype that has created a one-ofa-kind 

opportunity for the school. Since 2007, 

Aqua-Aerobic Systems has contributed more 

than $175,000 through the Colorado School 

of Mines Foundation for site development and 

student support. The company also made a 

significant investment in the equipment needed 

to perform this leading-edge research at Mines. 

“We’re exploring the energy-water nexus,” says 

Associate Director of AQWATEC Tzahi Cath, 

“and looking for cost-effective, sustainable 

approaches to water and wastewater treatment, 

reclamation and reuse.” With Aqua-Aerobic’s 

support, he explains, Mines faculty and students 

can take their research further toward the 

development of workable solutions to global 

water challenges. “We are proud to partner 

with such an industry leader and to provide 

our special expertise in this arena,” says Cath. 

“This is a very important industry tie for Mines— 

together, we can make real strides in improving 

wastewater treatment system technologies and 

energy use efficiency.” 

“Our company invests in wastewater technology 

and application knowledge, and we’re always 

looking for ways to leverage our resources,” 

says Aqua-Aerobic Systems President and CEO 

Robert J. Wimmer. “Our relationship with Mines 

has allowed us access to state-of-the-art thinking 

and the latest advances in wastewater technology. 

We are proud to be associated with the university, 

AQWATEC, and the students and faculty we’ve 

had the pleasure to work with at Mines.” 

AQWATEC Director Jörg Drewes says, “The 

industry partnership we established with Aqua- 

Aerobic Systems significantly improved our 

research infrastructure and provided for us a 

truly unique asset—one that not only attracts 

talented students to Mines, but also helps 

us bring in additional research funding.” It 

is AQWATEC’s hope that the demonstration 

system, which they will continue to operate in 

partnership with Aqua-Aerobic Systems for 

another couple of years, will ultimately serve as 

a model for future innovation in this area and 

further strengthen Mines’ research mission and 

its service to industry and society.

iNSpiriNg OuTreACh 

Monica noring visits elementary schools to “shatter computer science stereotypes” 

among young girls and boys. ricardo Mendez helps middle school students get 

over a critical barrier to success in math and science: thinking that the subjects 

are just “too hard.” Monica and Ricardo, whose Mines education is supported by 

adolph Coors Foundation Achievement Scholarships, are committed to building a 

pipeline of students who choose careers in math and science, particularly among 

students from underrepresented communities. 

in the 2008-09 academic year, the Adolph Coors 

foundation Achievement Scholarship program 

benefited 48 students at Colorado School of 

Mines through scholarship awards and support for 

student leaders in the school’s Minority engineering 

program. This year was the 19th year of Adolph Coors 

foundation support for the program, which benefits 

underrepresented students. “Ongoing support from 

the Adolph Coors foundation makes up a substantial 

part of our financial aid portfolio, and helps us bring a 

Mines education within reach for deserving students,” 

says Jill robertson, Mines’ director of financial aid. 

Monica’s father strongly encouraged her overall interest 

in math and science, but it was her first programming 

class at Mines that led her to choose computer science 

as her major. “i was really lucky to have Tracy Camp 

as my professor. She is a great professor and mentor, 

and got me excited about the development side of 

computing,” Monica remarks. 

“Computer science has a real shortage of 

women, even more than the engineering 

field as a whole,” she notes. “That’s part 

of the reason i chose Mines, and opted 

for computer science as a major, because 

those trends need to start changing.” in 

addition to her elementary school outreach, 

Monica also participates in the Computer 

research Association’s Committee on the 

Status of Women in Computing research, 

a nationwide effort to encourage women’s 

interest in the field. 

ricardo was introduced to careers in the 

energy industry through a u.S. department 

of energy program offered through his 

high school. each summer, program 

participants spent one week in the field 

and another week on a university campus 

somewhere in the country learning about 

the diverse career paths the industry has to 

offer. “i remember meeting a Mines student 

who was working as an intern at Shell Oil 

Company in New Orleans, and that really 

helped to show me the kind of opportunities 

a Mines education would open up,” he says. 

Now a junior pursuing a double major in petroleum 

engineering and economics, ricardo has learned 

the value of the Mines experience first-hand. he’s 

drawn particular inspiration from professors dennis 

Ott (Calculus ii) and karl Nelson (fluid Mechanics), 

whose energy and focus on applied concepts have 

encouraged in ricardo a genuine passion for learning. 

As vice president of the Society of hispanic professional 

engineers, an active member of the Minority engineering 

program, a middle-school mentor, and a frequent 

participant in intramural sports at Mines, ricardo takes 

advantage of all the university has to offer. 

newMonT SpurS 

earTh innovaTion 

A $110,000 philanthropic contribution from 

newmont Mining Corporation will establish 

a new multidisciplinary center focused on 

education of new professionals, and research 

and development of innovative solutions to key 

challenges facing the mineral resource industry. 

The Center for Innovation in Earth Resources 

Science & Engineering, based in the mining 

engineering department, will bring together 

expertise from the mining engineering, geology 

and geological engineering, geophysics and 

metallurgical engineering departments at Mines. 

“We know Mines is up to speed

to establish the center and attract significant 

research funding while providing our graduate 

students with opportunities to work with faculty, 

researchers and corporate partners to meet the 

critical needs of the mineral resource industry,” 

says M. Stephen Enders ’76, research professor 

and CIERSE director.

ricardo to put tuition concerns aside as they pursue 

their goals and help others achieve theirs. “i am honored

To mark the retirement of its outgoing CEO, harold Korell ’68, Houston-based 

Southwestern energy Company (NYSE:SWN) made a $1.25 million commitment to 

Marquez Hall, the building planned for Mines’ petroleum engineering department. 

In turn, Korell and his wife, Patricia, pledged to match the company’s contribution with 

their own $1.25 million gift. 

The combined pledges helped Mines to close in on its 

recently achieved $25 million fundraising goal for an 

interdisciplinary teaching and research facility that will 

house Mines’ petroleum engineering department. “The 

new world is an engineer’s world, and Marquez hall will 

provide an ideal physical environment for the important 

task of educating the engineering talent that the energy 

industry needs,” says korell, who continues to serve as 

executive chairman of Southwestern energy’s board. 

The company currently employs 14 Mines alumni, and 

korell notes that Mines graduates bring much more 

than technical competence to their careers. “They 

have great analytical and problem-solving capabilities, 

a solid work ethic, and a get-it-done attitude,” he says. 

Outstanding professors and top-notch students make 

Mines a one-of-a-kind learning experience in korell’s 

view. “i’d encourage students to learn everything they 

can while in the presence of such talented people as 

they have the opportunity to be around at Mines.” 

The korells’ contribution to Marquez hall amplifies their 

remarkable commitment to the university. Starting with 

a gift to The Mines fund in 1983, they have 

consistently and increasingly supported 

Mines ever since. They established the 

korell endowed Scholarship and provided 

funding for the korell Outdoor recreation 

Center in 2005. harold received Mines’ 

distinguished Achievement Medal in 

2004, and he currently serves on the CSM 

foundation board of governors. 

reflecting on his own experience at Mines, 

korell most vividly remembers the “hard 

work and challenges of it all.” heated 

intramural sports rivalries provided some 

diversion from the heavy academic work 

load. in particular, he recalls his fraternity 

team, the betas, posting regular victories 

in football and basketball competitions. 

“but honestly,” he says, “i enjoy Mines now 

more than ever.” 

inTelleCTual exChange 

in KaZaKhSTan 

Chevron is creating new opportunities for Mines students and 

faculty, and fostering a unique relationship between the school and 

Kazakhstan National Technical University through its University 

Partnership Program. One of several universities worldwide 

chosen for the program, Mines has received more than $1.5 

million over the last two years for educational enhancement. 

Chevron is also supporting basin modeling, and earth 

science and engineering education programs aimed 

at broadening the educational experience at Mines. 

The UPP also funds the Chevron Education Center for 

Study of the Earth, to be housed in Marquez Hall. 

A main component of the UPP is the school’s work with 

KazNTU in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Rich with oil and gas reserves, 

Kazakhstan is critical to Chevron’s work across the globe and an 

important tie for Mines’ petroleum engineers and geoscientists. 

“We’re one of few universities nationwide that fully integrates geology, 

petroleum engineering and geophysics,” says Petroleum Engineering 

Department Head Ramona Graves. “That’s why Chevron chose us to 

build this historic relationship with KazNTU.” 

Geology Department Head John Humphrey, along with Graves and 

Chevron representatives, has made several visits to Kazakhstan since 

2008, including a two-week field geology trip last summer. “The field 

geology trip was a phenomenal opportunity for the 10 Mines students 

we were able to take, and the 18 KazNTU students and faculty we 

worked with,” says Humphrey. “Without Chevron’s support, this isn’t 

something we’d be able to do. And without the UPP, these students 

would miss out on a truly amazing exchange opportunity.” 

In addition to the UPP, Chevron committed more than $3.5 million 

to support research at Mines last fiscal year. In 2003, Chevron 

established a Center of Research Excellence on campus, and more 

than 200 current Chevron employees worldwide earned their 

degrees at the school. Last year, the company matched more than 

$45,000 in employee gifts to Mines, and continued their generous 

annual support for academics and student programs at the school. 

Funding For 

FoCuS areaS 

Longtime philanthropic partner Conocophillips 

pledged $1.4 million during the 2009 fiscal year. Their 

contributions support Marquez Hall and substantially 

increase the company’s annual support for the 

prestigious ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Scholars Program, 

as well as providing continued support for academic 

departments and initiatives at Mines. The company 

gave $40,000 through its Faculty Support Program 

and $10,000 to the 2009 Oil Shale Symposium held 

on campus in October. They also matched $30,500 

in employee contributions to Mines last year. 

“This investment reflects our continuing commitment 

to Colorado School of Mines and its mission to 

achieve academic excellence in the fields of science, 

engineering and technology,” says Robert A. Ridge, 

ConocoPhillips’ vice president for health, safety and 

environment and a 1971 Mines alumnus. 

Over just the last five years, the company has made 

gifts and commitments of more than $2.6 million to 

Mines, and sponsored research consortia and new 

projects through the Colorado Renewable Energy 

Collaboratory. One of the top recruiters on campus, 

the company currently employs more than 170 

Mines graduates. 

“The Mines community is proud to count 

ConocoPhillips as one of its most dedicated 

corporate partners,” says President Bill Scoggins. 

“And we are thankful for their ongoing 

support as we work toward continued 

excellence in critical fields related to earth, 

energy and environment.”

eduCaTional 

enriChMenT 

Generous support from Ch2M hill enabled Mines 

students to visit the site where the U.S. nuclear 

industry is being reborn. In October 2009, 13 

graduate students in the Nuclear Materials Science 

program toured the Idaho National Laboratory in 

Idaho Falls, visiting the advanced test reactor, fuel 

processing/fabrication facilities, material evaluation 

laboratories and fuel storage area. Saleem Drera, a 

PhD candidate at Mines who participated, notes, “The 

INL tour showed me how many options we have for 

changing the nuclear fuel cycle to meet greater and 

more challenging objectives for energy generation 

and safety.”

By providing support for the university’s day-to-day needs, The Mines Fund makes an 

immediate and regular impact on the entire Mines community. Student scholarships, 

SupporT FroM aluMni 

Petroleum engineering alumnus al ireson ’48 has contributed to 

Mines every year since 1976. The university’s longest consecutive 

annual donor, Al stays involved with his alma mater in many ways – 

as a reunion giving volunteer, alumni association member, and regular 

participant in campus events. 

Al cherishes the close-knit environment that Mines provides and 

that alumni enjoy, no matter where they are in the world. And he 

values the one-on-one attention and intensive, hands-on experience 

available to students, remarking that practical experience is as 

important today as ever. 

“Today’s engineers and technical people will need to be adept at 

working in a global marketplace,” Ireson says, “and Mines has a 

unique ability to prepare students for success in that context.” 

Al and his sister, Myrtle, help prepare tomorrow’s leaders with annual 

gifts and the Ireson Family Scholarship Fund, which they established 

in 2000. “After annual lunches with the recipients of our scholarship,” 

says Al, “my sister and I come away with pleasant feelings because 

we know we’re helping.” 

For Al, one of the school’s great strengths is its ability to prepare 

students to work across disciplines and to be adaptable. He says, 

“Degrees from Mines let you be interdisciplinary without a problem; no 

matter what you studied, your Mines degree prepares you for success.” 

preSidenT’S CounCil 

The President’s Council is a community of 

generous individuals who, with annual leadership 

gifts of $1,000 or more, demonstrate an 

extraordinary commitment to Colorado School 

of Mines. 

More than 730 individuals joined the President’s 

Council in 2008-09. These donors understand 

the comprehensive needs of the institution and 

actively take a role in leading the way for many 

positive changes that will benefit Mines for years 

to come. 

Members of the President’s Council are recognized 

annually at the following levels, and individuals 

who’ve graduated in the last 10 years can take 

advantage of a giving program that enables Young 

Alumni to join this special group of donors at a 

reduced rate of $100 for every year out. More than 

80 Young Alumni joined the President’s Council 

last year through this giving program.

fundraising goal for Marquez Hall, the new 

petroleum engineering building slated for the Mines

museum when he was very young, Elliot made 

sure to revisit Golden while he was deciding on 

colleges during his senior year, and says, “It just 

clicked. Mines is the ultimate place for geology.” 

Now a sophomore, Elliot is fully immersed at 

Mines and confident in his choice of major. “All 

the geology professors I’ve had so far have 

been outstanding—strong individuals with great 

character. They give students the hands-on 

experiences we need to really learn,” he says. 

Since it was established in 1998, the Howard 

Itten Endowed Scholarship has supported a 

total of seven Mines students with four-year 

scholarships, and will continue to provide 

distinctive opportunities for students for

of the school’s success. This year, 378 friends contributed $4,060,086 to the school. Of this total, 174 friends contributed $422,689 in 

unrestricted support for current needs.

huManiTarian engineering 

in honduraS 

Mines was one of only two universities to receive 2009 funding 

from the Society of exploration geophysicists Foundation through 

its Geoscientists Without Borders committee. Twelve students and 

two faculty members from the school’s Humanitarian Engineering 

Program are working closely with the 200-person Honduran village of 

Chasnigua to design a sustainable water system with the renewable 

$49,500 gift. 

“It has been great to experience life in a small Honduran village, 

and to know that with this SEG Foundation grant, Mines is helping 

make a real impact in one of the poorest countries in the western 

hemisphere,” says graduate student Adrian Weaver. 

Geoscientists Without Borders and former SEG president Craig Beasley 

says, “With this program we hope to make meaningful links between 

industry, universities like Mines, humanitarian organizations and SEG, 

while making a difference for people and the environment worldwide.”

With a $1 million gift, alumnus larry J. Buchanan ’73, PhD ’79 and 

his business partner, Thomas S. Kaplan, are helping international 

students from developing countries make a Mines education a reality. 

Both have extensive international business experience in emerging 

markets and established this scholarship program to help bring 

students from abroad to study and live at Mines. 

“It is our hope that with this gift, we will open doors for talented young 

people from around the globe to fulfill their dreams of attending 

Mines, earning their degrees, and continuing the school’s long history 

of service to our global society,” said Buchanan. “We created this 

fund to express our gratitude to the geologists and engineers whose 

love of science and environment have enhanced the standard of 

living of countless people throughout the world.” Recipients of the 

Buchanan-Kaplan Scholarship receive funding for tuition, fees, books, 

living and travel expenses.

wiTh China 

Founded in 1944 to promote scholarly exchange 

between the U.S. and China, the li Foundation has 

supported metallurgy and materials science graduate 

students at Mines with substantial fellowship awards 

since 1993. The 2008-09 Li Fellow, Ningyi Zhang, 

came to Mines last fall from Central South University 

in Changsha, Hunan, to begin doctoral work on 

nanocomposite tribological thin films in the Advanced 

Coating and Surface Engineering Laboratory.

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Brajendra 

Mishra says, “Our partnership with the Li Foundation 

through their generous fellowship program 

strengthens technical collaboration between China 

and the United States. Bringing these talented 

students to Mines is an important intellectual 

exchange for the university.” 

Exemplary doctoral students, Li Fellows undertake 

cutting-edge research at Mines, while serving as 

role models for other metallurgy students and 

ambassadors for their Chinese universities.

The objective of the CSM Foundation is to ensure that the endowed
