Dear Members and Supporters
Welcome to Old Elthamians for their first visit to
Cambridge. We struggled to a draw in atrocious
conditions for the first match, so lets hope today
that we can improve on that.
Grateful thanks to todays sponsors, Agrii,

whom we would be financially drained. It is good
to see their continued support is being rewarded
by the current good results.
Thank you also to all the volunteers, staff,
players, match officials, coaching staff and
committee. Hopefully we should soon know who is
to be our next Director of Rugby.
Two weeks ago at Clifton we had a tough game
in also atrocious conditions, playing most of the
game with a man down after Mike Ayrton was red
carded.
It was a little bit of handbags and he was
penalised with a one week suspension, so
hopefully a lesson on retaliation has been learnt.
This was the first time Mike has been carded
(either colour) in over 100 games. Last week we
returned to Taunton to play the cancelled game.
Another hard game in much improved conditions
which we just won. Both those games are the first
time we have won at Clifton and Taunton – so well
done boys.
Congratulations to James Stokes and Brett Daynes
for being selected for England Counties last week
and playing alongside at least 3 of our ex-players.
Thank you also to Dennis E. for donating his 200
Club winnings to the first team beer kitty. I made
sure that this was used at Taunton and the boys
would like to thank Dennis for his kind generosity.
When we played Clifton, the 2nds also went with
us and won convincingly, and the Exiles beat Ely
that day too. Last week the Exiles beat Cantabs in
the cup – so well done team.
In March we have just one home game and one
away and then in April we have 3 home and 2 away,
so we have a very busy final month of the season,
with the Mini festival too.
After spending the last 2 Saturdays on the bus
for seemingly 6hrs each way, it is impressive from
an outsider of the squad to witness the good
behaviour of the team and the committment and
professionalism of the management – so thank you
Rowland, Tracey, Ian, Philip, Declan, Dan and Paris.
Lets hope today that we have a good game,
respect the match officials and continue the
winning run.

Those of you lucky enough to be playing will know that our
changing facilities have fallen a little behind the standards that we
set ourselves. We currently have only two indoor changing rooms
supplemented by the temporary port-a-cabins together with
shared showering facilities.
Now that we are running 4 teams on a Saturday, with our ever
growing Mini & Youth membership, the growth in women’s rugby
and with the objective of bringing girls rugby to Volac Park and the
increased use of our club house by many in our local community,
we need to provide facilities that are fit for purpose – and are safe!
Thanks to a number of club members providing their professional
expertise, we have designed a scheme to refurbish the existing
facilities and provide up to 6 new changing rooms in two phases:
• The first phase provides for the refurbishment of two existing
changing rooms, the provision of four new changing rooms,
gym, physio room and additional WC facilities.
• The second phase would add two more changing rooms and a
Multi-purpose room.
We have obtained planning permission from Cambridge City
Council and now need to move on to the hard part. As you would
imagine all of this is going to cost a significant amount of money, we
will try and do as much of the work as we can ourselves but we still
estimate that Phase 1 alone will cost around £700,000.
We have been very fortunate to be awarded £200,000 from
Cambridge City Council under their Section 106 facilities funding
scheme and are talking to the Rugby Union about grant funding and
a loan. But the most we are likely to raise from these sources is
around half of the total cost so we will need to talk to a number of
other benefactors to raise the remainder.
We are having a major fund raising drive which will start during
the 2015/2016 season with the aim of starting to build Phase 1 in
early 2017 to be completed by the start of season 2017/2018.
This is a major project for the club and vital to our future so any
help that you can give either with the project itself or in helping
to raise the money to complete the project do please get in touch
with me.

Cambridge claim vital win
at Taunton to extend lead
at the top of NL2S...
Taunton 15 – 21 CRUFC
A Cambridge team missing more than 10 firstteam
players demonstrated their strength
in depth as they overcame Taunton 21–15,
securing four vital points and extending their
lead at the top of the National League 2S table.
This rearranged fixture started with the
hosts playing with the wind behind them, and
it helped them ease into an early 8–0 lead.
Cambridge responded with a well-worked
try by Lawrence Hutchinson, and Gerhard
Boshoff converted to make it 8–7 at half time.
The second half was dominated by the
visitors though, with Cambridge camped in
Taunton’s half and picking up two quick tries
from Steve Hipwell and Brendan Burke to
make it 21–8.
Taunton scored a converted try late on to
make it 21–15, and they finished the game
strongly, putting pressure on the Cambridge
line.
The visitors’ defence would not let them
through for another score, though and
Cambridge came away deserving winners.
Cambridge’s director of rugby Rowland
Winter was delighted with the result, and all
the players’ performances.
He said: “I’m really proud of the whole team
and impressed by the players who came into
the squad this weekend.
“It will make selection tough with players
returning to the squad over the coming weeks.
“The competition for spots in the team
will increase the intensity for the final seven
games, which is needed as we must continue
to step up our game.”

Clifton 8 – 16 CRUFC
Rowland Winter hailed Cambridge’s battling
qualities as they ground out a 16–8 win away
to Clifton in National League 2S.
Cambridge were forced to play much of
the match with just 14 men following Mike
Ayrton’s moment of ill-discipline which saw
him shown a red card.
That forced the visitors to dig in and adapt
from their usual free-flowing, attacking
approach to the game, which they proved
more than capable of doing in tough
conditions.
Having gone behind to an unconverted
Alfie To’oala try and a penalty from Brad
Barnes, Cambridge hit back when Stefan
Liebenberg went over for a converted score
following good work by the pack.
Gerhard Boshoff’s penalty and a drop goal
from Brendan Burke then sealed the win.
“We adapted well to the conditions, the
referee and playing with less players,” said
director of rugby Winter.
“This is a big improvement from last week
when we were slow to adapt to the changes
the game brought.
“Against a strong and physical Clifton side,
we changed our style and used a different
skill set that isn’t normally associated with our
brand of rugby.
“Our decision making, set piece, and
power game was superior and it was a good
opportunity to show off a different side to our
all-round game.”

Nervous Nineties…
Yes, I know we’ve hit 100 points… Today,
I’m using a cricketing metaphor to compare
our situation, 11 points clear at the top
of the National Two South table, with a
batsman about to score his century. And
with seven games left for us, eight for OAs,
no amount of Diocalm will cure the nerves
around as we try to hit that top spot at the
end of term.
Play offs are uncertain. Financially they
can be quite useful, but having been to
Wembley recently with the U’s, I know
from talking to many, many involved that,
honestly, they’d rather have had promotion
in the bag than go through the tension and
risk that a play-off affords. So, on that basis,
all we have to do until the end of April is
win. Doesn’t sound that difficult when you
put it that way, but every team we play will
be out to knock us out of our stride and
bump us down the table.
The manner in which a depleted side –
based on this season’s selections, anyway
– made the four point win at Taunton their
own bodes well. That winning mentality is
ingrained in the entire squad, and everyone
is looking out for their opportunity to
contribute to a promotion winning season.
What we can afford to do and not afford to
do, how many points we can ‘safely’ drop,
isn’t an issue. Winning, and pride, is. This
side will not back down from the challenge
ahead and on that basis, we should be
alright.
Notwithstanding, from this side of the
white line, it is most definitely akin to
watching Joe Root on 99. You know he’s
capable of topping the ton, you know
it’s perfectly possible, and even likely, to
happen. But there are so many variables
in sport, and life, that even working to the
best of your ability and playing at the top
of your game, stuff happens. On that basis,
expect functionality and professionalism
until the job is done, and entertainment,
and a host of ups and downs, before the
final, final whistle is blown.
Old Elthamians away was a classic
example. A cracking start, a small pitch,
inclement weather, an ‘interesting’ late
yellow card, and a last minute equaliser that
turned a win into a draw looked miserable on
the day. However, those two points won, in
the end, mean we are 11 points clear rather
than 9. There are dozens of examples of ‘ifs,
buts and maybes’ throughout the season,
but every point won adds up. Simples.
Today will not be easy. Neither will
any of the six games we have left come
5 o’clock tonight. Barnes away, CABs at
home, Redingensians Rams away, Sarfend
at home, BSE away, and Dorking at home?
Every opponent we face from now until
Saturday April 30th will have something
riding on a win, or bonus points scored, or
just professional pride. And all those make
for dangerous times. So, complacency has
to go out of the window, and full-on, fullthroated,
full-bodied support is the order of
the day.
And I cannot wait for the run-in.

CRUFC U16 Tour to Rome
A touring party of 27 players and 27 parents
descended on Rome to take part in a 3-way
tournament against two Italian sides and to
watch the Italy-England 6-Nations match.
The Friday evening set the standard as we all
headed out to the local Piazza for post travel
beers and something to eat. The food was
excellent, especially with the free wine and 5
courses for ¤18! A couple of bars later and we
found our hotel again and once over the jet lag
we settled in for the night, about 2am UK time!
Saturday came quickly and as punishment we
strolled to Piazza Navona for a cheeky Peroni.
Then we found a bar near the Pantheon and
another on the way to the Trevi Fountain where
we stopped for a pizza. Several Pizzas later we
saw the Trevi Fountain, some even got a photo,
and then we headed to the coach for a short
trip to the games. The two games against local
sides were played on a artificial pitch under
floodlights on Saturday evening.
The first game was against Italian National
Champions, Capitolina, which Cambridge
won 14–5 with tries from Alex Coles following
a cheeky chip through from scrum half Dan
Arbide and a classic wingers try from Steven
Snook, both of which were converted by Fin
Creighton. When Capitolina forced Cambridge
back into their own half some tactical kicking
for touch by Creighton ensured that Capitolina
had to play from deep and were then prevented
from attacking by solid Cambridge defending.
Capitolina’s only try came from a perfectly
executed and unstoppable rolling maul from a
line out.
Cambridge’s second game was against Lazio
SS which they lost 21–12. Kenny Jenkins scored
another classic wingers try dodging flying
tackles as Lazio SS tried to take him down.
Prop Henry Breeze then found himself out in
the centres around 15 metres out and crashed
over with style. Fin Creighton converted one try.
Cambridge felt a bit hard done by as the referee
was unsighted and unable to see that one Lazio
try was not grounded and that another try came
from a ball that came straight through the scrum.
Capitolina were excellent hosts and the rugby
was intense; we later learned that Capitolina
train 5 days a week! We were served food
in the marquee and after some Vietnamese
whiskey and a couple of beers it was time to
head back to the hotel for some rest. They boys
headed back for rest, the parents headed to the
local hostelry for a surprise game of golf which,
as always, didn’t end well!
Sunday next and off the the match to watch
England. Directions were to get to the Vatican City
and follow the road north. What could go wrong?
Nothing as it happened, other than stalling at
several bars on the way! So many bars in fact we
only just made it to the stadium in time!
After the game we took in the atmosphere
at the Peroni village on the South side, sank a
couple and headed for our final meal, another
6 course dinner for ¤15 this time! After dinner
the boys got in the piano and sang us some
songs and then we wearily headed back to our
local bar for a lock in!
Rain stopped play on Monday so we never
made it to the Colosseum. We managed the
Wedding cake memorial, quick team photo, and
then leg it to the coach to come home.
55 travelled, 55 returned, all in all another
successful tour and finished off our 6 nation
adventure in style.
