Energy from Gas
Gas is clean
Low emissions and high efficiency in
energy production play a key role in
investment decisions.
As emission requirements and regula-
tions become more and more stringent,
gas offers many advantages:
>> low CO 2 emissions
>> low NO X emissions
>> minimal SO X emissions
and
>> no particle emissions.
Gas is efficient
Producing energy with gas is highly ef-
ficient. The operation and maintenance
costs of a gas power plant are lower
than those burning other fossil fuels.
Gas is flexible
No matter what your requirements are:
production of electricity, combined heat
and power or Tri-Generation. MAN
B&W gas engines reliably supply you
with cost-effective energy.
PGI – Otto engine
without spark plugs
“Performance Gas Injection” – or just
“PGI”. Behind this abbreviation is
hidden a new, revolutionary gas engine
concept which makes spark plugs
completely unnecessary. With its PGI
engine, MAN B&W Diesel succeeded to
develop an Otto engine with the effec-
tive mean pressure of a state-of-the-art
Diesel engine.
The innovative
PGI principle
The patented PGI concept is based on
the ignition, at a hot spot of a small
amount of pilot gas, injected under high
pressure, in a pre-chamber.
This will lead to the ignition of the gas/
air mixture in the main combustion
chamber of the lean-burn gas engine.
Basic principle of technologies
No more replacements
of spark plugs
As our PGI engine no longer has spark
plugs, you will not have to invest any
time in replacing these.
By using only reliable and approved
industrial components for the PGI
ignition system, we insure long periods
between overhauls (TBO).
Clean combustion
With its NO X -emissions
(< 250 mg/nm 3 ) our PGI gas
engine undercuts the “TA Luft”
specifications by 50%.

Applications
It does not matter which kind of energy you require or in which form. Power plants
with MAN B&W PGI gas engines guarantee highest efficiency at lowest emission.
This is of advantage for your business and good for the environment.
Urban
In densely populated urban agglomera-
tions, the requirements concerning
space, emissions and noise protection
for a power plant are restrictive.
To further increase the efficiency, more
combined heat and power plants (CHP)
are being built every year.
Industrial
Industrial areas normally have less
restrictions concerning space and noise
protection. Depending on the applica-
tion, heat from the production process
of electricity can be used in many diffe-
rent ways.
Remote
Power plants in remote areas do not
normally have to cope with space-
limiting restrictions. The environmental
requirements in these areas fulfill the
Worldbank environmental specificati-
ons.
Modular Design
Flexible
MAN B&W gas power plants are built in
a modular manner. This offers you maxi-
mum flexibility, whatever you require:
urban, industrial or remote zone design –
or for the future extension of your plant.
Fast
Modular construction means that only
standardised and well-proven modules
will be utilised in the construction of
your power plant.
This helps to save time in project plan-
ning and construction without losing
quality and reliability.
Efficient
Standardised modules, our competence
and experience lower the costs of pro-
ject planning, assembly, operation and
maintenance due to consistent and
integrated planning from one source.
Operation and Maintenance
Today MAN B&W Diesel , s 32/40PGI gas engines meet tomorrow , s expectations and
requirements for operation and maintenance.
The engines grant high flexibility to the operator and make long maintenance-free
operating periods possible.
Low costs
>> No spark plugs mean no more
time is spent on spark plug
replacement.
>> All engine components have long
periods between overhauls (TBO)
as gas burns cleanly.
>> High efficiency with low
emissions.
Ease of maintenance
>> All engine parts are designed to
grant easy and quick access.
>> Spacious openings to the
camshaft and crankcase.
