The industrial sector includes the production <strong>of</strong><br />

bottles and packaging, recycling raw materials,<br />

manufacturing electronic equipment and electrical<br />

appliances, chemical products and its byproducts,<br />

medical equipment, textiles, clothing<br />

and accessories, hygiene products, perfumes and<br />

cosmetics; all <strong>of</strong> these will be helped by <strong>for</strong>eign<br />

investment in the aim <strong>of</strong> generating production<br />

linkage, allowing imports to be replaced and exports<br />

to be increased.<br />

There<strong>for</strong>e, priorities are set <strong>for</strong> modernizing the<br />

metals industry, industries producing steel byproducts,<br />

electrical appliances, manufacturing<br />

aluminum and glass containers <strong>for</strong> beverages<br />

and medicines, increasing capacities <strong>for</strong> the de-<br />

The Ministry <strong>of</strong> Industries has a total <strong>of</strong> 114 companies,<br />

production centers and services spread<br />

throughout Cuba employing 86,045 workers. Of<br />

this total, 26,790 are qualified, 33% <strong>of</strong> the qualified<br />

work<strong>for</strong>ce is higher level, 51 % are middle<br />

technicians and qualified workers make up 16%.<br />

In the higher level 18% are mechanical engineers;<br />

the general technical specialties are covered<br />

equally by mechanical engineers, industrial<br />

engineers, chemical engineers and others.<br />
