To All apprentices, Salon Owners, Mentors, Employers, Trainers and Colleagues,<br />

WS Training Ltd are proud to introduce and invite you to their 2016 Annual<br />

Academy <strong>Competition</strong>.<br />

A chance to celebrate and showcase your skills in a place where we can enjoy the<br />

wonder of hair and the talent of our young people.<br />

This year we are going GREEN and giving you themes for each year group but asking<br />

you to create your accessories, props and costumes out of things you would find in<br />

a recycling bin!<br />

We have set both <strong>rules</strong> and guidance for each year group. We are really excited to<br />

introduce these to you and hope you will have fun researching and coming up with<br />

your ideas for all the competitors!<br />

We welcome any questions or queries from anyone so please do not hesitate to<br />

contact us.<br />

The competition this year will be held once again at Wherstead Park, Suffolk, IP9<br />

2BJ on Monday 4 th April 2016.<br />

While each <strong>Competition</strong> will have separate start times we would love to see you for<br />

the whole event. Refreshments will be available for you to purchase throughout the<br />

day and into the evening.<br />

We would like to also to tell you about our new award we will be introducing this<br />

year. We as team would like to give recognition to those Apprentices who have gone<br />

above and beyond, have excelled on their course or those who have succeeded<br />

against all odds. If you have such an Apprentice who you think deserves to be<br />

nominated for the “Star Apprentice Award<br />

2016” then please pass on your nominations to<br />

the Academy. We will notify all nominees of<br />

their nomination and the winner will be<br />

announced on the night of the <strong>Competition</strong>.<br />

General <strong>Competition</strong> <strong>rules</strong> for ALL competitors<br />

1. All work must be competitors own work and must not be<br />

assisted by anyone else during your time on the competition<br />

floor<br />

2. Any added hair must not cover or make up more than 25% of<br />

the final look<br />

3. All competitors must register at least 15 minutes before your<br />

competition start time<br />

4. The judges’ decision is final<br />

5. Competitors must provide and work on their own models<br />

7. All competitors must supply their own equipment (including<br />

mirrors).<br />

8. Use of products is allowed.<br />

9. All equipment must be removed before judging commences.<br />

Any competitor who works on or touches the model’s hair<br />

after time will be disqualified.<br />

10. Moodboards must be visible at your station when your<br />

competition starts<br />

11. Health and Safety policies and procedures must be followed<br />

and adhered to at all times<br />

12. Any accessories or props used must be made from recycled<br />

materials<br />

13. Models are required to wear plain leggings or shorts and<br />

vest top as a base to protect their modesty<br />

14. If you are using a fellow stylist or therapist from your salon<br />

as your model they must not coach or help you during the<br />

competition otherwise points may be deducted


Level 3 – Landmarks – Avant-garde hair up<br />

For this years Level 3 Avant-garde competition we would like all<br />

competitors to come up with and complete a design that is<br />

based on a Landmark. This could include any kind a structural<br />

element created by added hair, accessories or the models own<br />

hair.<br />

Time Allowed – 60 mins<br />

Competitors must prepare their models hair prior to the start of<br />

the competition in a 1 st pli state. This means hair must be in a<br />

set, or down and natural ready for heated styling to be carried<br />

out on the competition floor. Any over preparation of the hair<br />

will be removed by the adjudicators or hair will be dampened<br />

down to take it back to its natural state.<br />

Hair can be dressed however you wish but an Avante Garde look<br />

must be what you are creating.<br />

A Moodboard should be present with you on the floor at the start<br />

of the competition. The judges will come round while you are<br />

working and may want to ask you questions while you are<br />

working.<br />

You can use plaiting, weaving, rolls, knots, plaits, twists……… the<br />

list is endless.<br />

Please remember all costumes, accessories and props should be<br />

made from recyclable materials and you may be penalised if the<br />

judges see other items being used. Accessories and added hair<br />

may be used but must not cover over 25% of the look. Please be<br />

aware to also protect your client’s modesty by ensuring they are<br />

wearing leggings/shorts and vest underneath your costume you<br />

have made.<br />

Avant-garde - definition<br />

“those artists, writers, musicians, etc, whose techniques and<br />

ideas are markedly experimental or in advance of those generally<br />

accepted”


Level 2 2 nd Years – Sweets and Treats – Set and Style<br />

For all 2 nd year Apprentices we would like to test your creative<br />

setting skills by asking you to create a look by setting your<br />

models whole head and dressing it out. The finished look can be<br />

up or down. Judges and adjudicators would like to see your set<br />

still in the hair when you start on the competition floor so please<br />

do not take your models set out until instructed to do so.<br />

Models hair may be set on anything you need it to be set on. This<br />

could include conventional rollers or unconventional items such<br />

as pipe cleaners. It could be half a head of one and half head of<br />

the other. The only stipulation is it all needs to be in the set to<br />

start.<br />

Time allowed – 45mins<br />

You must create your desired look based around the theme<br />

“Sweets and Treats”. Accessories and added hair may be used but<br />

must not cover over 25% of the look. They must also be made,<br />

along with the costume, from recyclable materials only. Please<br />

be aware to also protect your client’s modesty by ensuring they<br />

are wearing leggings/shorts and vest underneath your costume<br />

you have made.


Level 2 1 st Years – Enchanted Forest – Style Creation<br />

For you 1 st years we would like you to create any look you want<br />

to. It can be dressed up or down and you can prepare the hair<br />

however you would like. If it is being set you can do this prior to<br />

the start of the competition and let the judges and adjudicators<br />

see the set in the hair. If you are styling it with heated styling<br />

tools this must be done within your floor time. If you wish you<br />

can blowdry your models hair by bringing your model to the<br />

floor with damp hair.<br />

If you come to floor with over prepared hair you may find we will<br />

have to dampen it down back to its natural state.<br />

You can use any techniques you wish to in order to create the<br />

look all we ask is that it is based in the theme “Enchanted Forest”.<br />

Time allowed – 40 minutes<br />

Any props, accessories and costumes must be made from<br />

recyclable materials. Please protect your models modesty by<br />

ensuring they are covered underneath using leggings/shorts and<br />

a vest.<br />

Accessories and added hair may be used but must not cover over<br />

25% of the look.


Barbering – Suited and Booted – Cut and Style<br />

We would like you to cut and style your models hair using your<br />

best barbering skills to create a look based on “Suited and<br />

Booted”. This could be a character from a movie or just a look<br />

that you have been inspired by and dressed to meet the theme.<br />

Accessories and props can be used but these must be made from<br />

recyclable materials.<br />

You can use any cutting tools and equipment you like but must<br />

be provided by yourself. Products are also encouraged as well as<br />

the use of any number of techniques you need to use to create<br />

the look you need.<br />

Time allowed – 45 minutes<br />

Where necessary please ensure to protect your models modesty.<br />

working and may want to ask you questions while you are<br />

working.
