Our story<br />
The story of <strong>Sika</strong>-Design begins in 1942 when my grandfather Ankjær<br />
Andreasen produced the first batch of baskets, lamps, flower tables and<br />
other smaller interior items made of rush and willow. In the 1950s he expanded<br />
his production to include a series of furniture made from rattan,<br />
and the company <strong>Sika</strong>-Design was firmly established.<br />
The rattan was imported from the Far East and my grandfather travelled<br />
there to buy rattan for his wicker makers in Denmark. During a trip in 1972,<br />
he was so impressed by the skilled wicker makers, and decided to establish<br />
a wicker furniture factory in Malaysia. Since then, the Far East has been essential<br />
to our production of furniture, and today we manufacture our furniture<br />
in our own factory in Indonesia. My father Knud Andreasen took<br />
over the company in 1983, however my grandfather still continued his<br />
daily “inspection” rounds in the company until his death in 1997.<br />
On my 10th birthday, my father allowed me to attend a fair where <strong>Sika</strong>-<br />
Design was exhibiting a series of furniture. On that day, I knew I wanted to<br />
be a part of his company, and my passion for rattan furniture was started.<br />
Since 1996 we have worked side-by-side bringing <strong>Sika</strong>-Design into the new<br />
century, while never letting go of our strong heritage and values of good<br />
craftsmanship and design.<br />
ORIGINALS<br />
The <strong>Originals</strong> collection is a collection inspired by our own design sketches<br />
as well as other successful models from the 1950’s and 1960’s. I have a<br />
great dedication to the materials my grandfather and his generation chose<br />
to work with, and I feel very privileged that I have the opportunity to continue<br />
his legacy.<br />
Our skilled workers craft each piece of rattan furniture by hand. Rattan<br />
grown in the Indonesian forests and regenerate within 5-7 years. It transforms<br />
CO 2<br />
into clean air, and it is one of the fastest growing materials<br />
for furniture production. Besides these amazing qualities, rattan is a very<br />
beautiful natural resource.<br />
ORIGINAL TEAK COLLECTION<br />
To complement our collection of rattan items we have developed an original<br />
series of teak products. All our teak items are made of old reclaimed<br />
teak from old houses, fishing boats and railroad supports. The rustic teak<br />
items will appear with reparations and fillings and the general characteristic<br />
that old wood will have.<br />

We attempt to improve our efforts on behalf of the environment on an<br />
ongoing basis and take responsibility for the people who create our<br />
furniture. We aim to minimize the consumption of resources and prevent<br />
pollution in our supply chain.<br />
<strong>Sika</strong> Design does not accept child labour, respect human rights and complies with<br />
the SA8000 standard for social accountability, and we demand the same<br />
commitment from our suppliers.<br />
Products from <strong>Sika</strong> Design are developed and marketed in accordance with our<br />
management system for environment and social responsibility ISO 14001/2004 and<br />
SA8000/2008. Certified by Bureau Veritas Certification.<br />

• Production is handmade and does not require big<br />
machines which pollute the environment.<br />
• Rattan is a 100% natural material. Furniture production<br />
does not require glue and can be treated with<br />
toxin free lacquer.<br />
• Rattan is often confused with bamboo, but rattan is<br />
massive and bamboo is hollow.<br />
• If you can bend it, it is 99% sure rattan.<br />
• The <strong>Originals</strong> Collection is produced in Indonesia,<br />
which is where 80% of the World’s rattan grows.<br />
