Transcript of text: <strong>Women</strong> are here. There are<br />
more women than men in this department. But it<br />
is still the case th<strong>at</strong> it becomes extremely difficult<br />
for a woman to pursue her career if she also<br />
wants to start a family. The structures th<strong>at</strong> we<br />
exist within are based around old ideas about<br />
wh<strong>at</strong> men <strong>and</strong> women should do. Without really<br />
significant change many women are still put in<br />
wh<strong>at</strong> feels like an almost impossible situ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
There has been incredible change – but for so<br />
many of us it still feels like a choice: career or<br />
family.<br />

Transcript of text: I’m not put off – I want to finish<br />
my degree <strong>and</strong> do a PhD in Physics. I want to<br />
stay in academia, research… But the ways th<strong>at</strong><br />
people are put off are subtle – little trends th<strong>at</strong> you<br />
notice th<strong>at</strong> influence you. Even <strong>at</strong> primary school,<br />
the ideas th<strong>at</strong> you have about yourself – you get<br />
stuck with them. The things we pick up on are who<br />
has the senior roles – it might feel more balanced<br />
amongst our group, but above us why are so many<br />
of the support roles done by women – supporting<br />
the men in their senior, prestigious roles? Th<strong>at</strong><br />
influences how us as young women perceive wh<strong>at</strong><br />
we might be able to do – how much harder it might<br />
be for us. But my dad’s the biggest feminist I know<br />
– his <strong>at</strong>titude is th<strong>at</strong> there is just nothing I can’t do<br />
because I’m a girl.<br />
