St. Mary’s Central
High School
A Tradition of Catholic Education Since 1878
In 1878, four Sisters from the convent of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, arrived in Bismarck to staff
what was then the St. Mary’s Academy and Boarding School. In 1916, the first high school classes were offered
and the spring of 1922 brought the first graduation at St. Mary’s High School.
Be it known to all who enter here that Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but
ever present teacher in its classes. He is the mold of its faculty and the inspiration of its students.
SMCHS Proudly Dedicates the 2009 - 2010 Annual
Report to the “Music Man” William J. Schmidt
Bill Schmidt, “Mr. Schmidt” to most, lost his battle with
cancer April 10, 2010, at age 58. Mr. Schmidt was the director
of instrumental music at St. Mary’s Central High School, a
position he held since 1974. In addition to his responsibilities as
department chair, he directed the Wind Orchestra, Pep Band and
the “Marching Saints.”
His talents did not stop there. He served as a guest conductor at
the International Music Camp since 1987. Mr. Schmidt was the
Auditions and Finance Manager for the North Dakota All-State
Band, Choirs, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Choir, and
directed the Bismarck-Mandan Wind Ensemble.
Mr. Schmidt was the recipient of many awards during his
profession. In 1989, the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce selected him to receive the “Crystal Apple Award” for
Excellence in Education – Teacher of the Year. He also the received the “1990 Catholic High School Educator of
the Year Award,” the “Citation of Excellence” award from the National Band Association, and was inducted into
the John Philip Sousa Foundation “Legion of Honor” at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in
December 1998. Mr. Schmidt was named a Fulbright Scholar. Bands under his direction were selected to perform for
the North Dakota Music Educators Association conference in 1992, 1999 and 2006. SMCHS Wind Orchestra was
also selected and performed for the North Central MENC conference in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 2006. In March 2010,
the North Dakota Music Educators Association presented Bill with their Educator of the Year award.
Mr. Schmidt will be remembered as the music man who taught many students using his unique method of teaching
and mentoring. Inspired by his motivation, dedication, strict discipline, students gained a sense of pride in knowing
they excelled beyond their expectations.
Mr. Schmidt lived by his favorite mottos: “When you work, work hard; when you play, play hard; and when you
pray, pray hard,” and his most famous quote, “Early is on time and on time is late.” Although his time on this earth
was short, his words, memories and spirit will live on in the hearts of the students and the halls of St. Mary’s Central
High School forever. Mr. Schmidt, the Marching Saints are still “waking them up”!
Dear Friends, Alumni, and Benefactors of St. Mary’s Central High School:
I am very pleased that our 7th Annual Report has been published to give
everyone a review of what happened during the 2009-10 fiscal year. I would
like to thank everyone who was so generous in gifts of time, talent and treasure
to St. Mary’s Central High School. We could not operate without the generosity
of so many. A gift received last spring allowed us to reduce our debt, and make
many improvements around our building.
We are fortunate at St. Mary’s Central High School to have the leadership and
support of Bishop Paul Zipfel, our five sponsoring parishes and their pastors, our
lay board members, committee members, and an exceptional staff. Our teaching
staff continues to challenge our students each day to help them prepare for life
after SMCHS.
This past year, the entire St. Mary’s Central High School family was saddened
when William J. Schmidt lost his battle with cancer. Mr. Schmidt was the instrumental music chairperson
for over 30 years. We will never forget listening or watching the Saints Marching Band, the Pep Band, or the
beautiful music of the Wind Orchestra.
There have been several technological advances that have taken place at St. Mary’s Central High School over
the past few years. We have also purchased Promethean Active Boards for several of our classrooms and are
currently working on securing the funding to have a Promethean Active Board in every classroom. Thank you
to those who have donated funds for the technology improvements at SMCHS.
We want to assure our benefactors that we are doing everything possible to maximize your gifts each year.
Once again, this year we made arrangements to an Agreed Upon Procedures Review with Brady Martz,
instead of an audit. They reviewed our Balance Sheet and Verified balances so that we would be able to do an
unqualified audit in the future.
Our comprehensive testing and ACT test scores demonstrate the academic success of our students. SMCHS
students consistently score higher than their public school counterparts each year in both tests. In addition,
their involvement in community activities is an inspiration to all of us. Our school community strives to live
our Mission Statement.
“The Mission of St. Mary’s Central High School is to provide an opportunity for its community to grow
spiritually, academically, and socially in a Christ-centered environment based on Catholic tradition.”
Thank you to everyone in the St. Mary’s Central High School community. May God bless all of you. Please
keep our school in your prayers each and every day.
Yours respectfully,
John Jankowski
What is the Circle of Saints?
The Circle of Saints is St. Mary’s Central High School’s annual giving program. We charge approximately half
of what it actually costs to educate a student through tuition because we want to remain affordable to everyone.
The Circle of Saints is the primary way St. Mary’s Central High School makes up for the gap between tuition
and the actual cost of educating a student.
How is the money raised through the Circle of Saints used?
The funds raised through the Circle of Saints has three primary purposes: to provide our students with the
resources they need, such as textbooks and new technology; to pay our dedicated teachers a decent living wage;
and to pay for the needs of the building and grounds.
How can I give to the Circle of Saints?
There are many ways that you can give to the Circle of Saints. Many people prefer to give once yearly, others
