LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
Since coming to Saint Alphonsus as the new president and CEO in June 2009,
I’ve had the opportunity to meet with hundreds of physicians, community leaders,
donors, staff, and volunteers to learn about the hospital and the health care needs of
our community. I have received such a warm welcome from so many people. With
a deep sense of pride and gratitude, I want to thank all of you for the work, time,
energy and financial contributions that you have given to Saint Alphonsus. All of
those gifts, combined, allow us to continue our legacy and Mission of healing the
body, mind and spirit of our patients.
The 2009 Report to the Community reflects the achievements and on-going
commitment of Saint Alphonsus to provide comprehensive programs and services
to our communities – not only in the Treasure Valley but beyond to many rural
communities. Each day we continue to build on our quality and patient safety
accomplishments, and constantly look for creative, collaborative ways to offer
healthcare services to keep people healthy.
As we move forward, we will continue to confront enormous challenges and
opportunities. The newly formed Saint Alphonsus Health System – comprised of
Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center (Boise), Mercy Medical Center (Nampa),
Holy Rosary Medical Center (Ontario, OR), St. Elizabeth Health Services (Baker
City, OR) – gives us the privilege to create an integrated health care delivery system
across Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho to improve the health, access to care,
and quality of life for our patients. Health care reform measures will challenge us to
become more efficient, delivering the right care at the right time in the right setting.
We will take health care delivery to new heights by the potential of what can
be accomplished through the teamwork and dedication of our extensive Saint
Alphonsus family. Our success will ensure that our Mission is sustained to serve
everyone who enters our health system, and that we can reinvest funds back into the
community to support facility, technology, physician and staff recruitment. I truly
anticipate great achievements!
Sincerely,
Thank You to the Community
Linda Payne Smith,
Executive Director, Foundation and Marketing
As I reflect on 2009, I am struck by the strength and dedication
of so many not only here at Saint Alphonsus but also throughout
the communities we serve. The past year has been challenging
in many ways but our wonderful physicians, nurses, volunteers,
board members, associates and supporters were always there to
lend a hand or go the extra mile to support the Saint Alphonsus
Foundation. For that we are extremely grateful.
In June we celebrated the 27th Capitol Classic with over 1,000
children running from the Boise Depot to the Capitol Building,
despite the wet, rainy day. Everyone crossing the finish line was a
winner, no matter how fast they walked or ran the race.
Despite the economic downturn, the Festival of Trees was a
success with net revenue and attendance exceeding 2008. More
than 25,000 people visited the Boise Centre on the Grove to, as
some have said, “start the holiday season.”
Throughout the year, we were blessed by the generosity of those
who contributed with their time or dollars to a wide variety
of programs and projects at Saint Alphonsus. Your donations
allowed us to provide patient assistance, education throughout
the community, purchase new equipment and provide a healing
environment to our patients.
And then, just after 2009 came to a close, the earthquake in Haiti
struck. The response from this community as well as others
within Trinity Health was immediate. Donations to Project Haiti
were made through school fundraisers, large cash donations,
emptying of piggy banks and even in items to be shipped. Our
Foundation Board Members rushed to help in the office as we
sorted through piles of envelopes, answered numerous phone
calls each day and worked to thank each and every donor. It was
absolutely amazing and we will always be eternally grateful and
inspired by these examples of generosity and humanity.
Sincerely,
Ned Pontious
Foundation Board Chairman
I am fortunate to be the Chair of the Saint Alphonsus
Foundation, an organization that does so much for our
community. When I had the opportunity to chair this
foundation, goals were set to help provide ways to educate the
community and identify the next generation to continue our
responsibility in providing philanthropy and volunteering. I feel
we have made some forward progress.
Despite the challenges in the local economy, we were able to
raise $3 million in donations thru generous donors, events and
programs. This year’s 26th Festival of Trees was a grand event
where tree auctions were substantially higher than last year.
Thanks to the efforts of our chairs for the event, Susan and
Bryan Norby. Project Haiti had great success, where a digital
x-ray system was installed by the first medical team to visit since
2003.
We are able to accomplish so much due to the Foundation
Committees chaired in 2009 by Joan Edwards, Darrel
Anderson, Katie Williams, Kelli Elledge, and Mike Pierson due
to their hard work.
Our Grants Committee provided over $300,000 of funding for
Foundation grants and Mission grants. This funding allowed
Saint Alphonsus to provide community awareness programs,
enhance the education of staff and the community, and has
increased rural access to cardiology care by way of the current
telemedicine program.
As I look at 2010 I am optimistic because despite the challenges
we face in our lives we always have a chance to give something
back. Sir Winston Churchill said it best when he said “We make
a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give”. Have
a great life in 2010!
Sincerely,
The Finken Quads Story
Rich was 35 years-old, and Tracy was 25 when they met online.
They were both ready to start a family, but after two years of
trying, they sought medical help. Tracy took one dose of the
fertility drug Clomid. Three weeks later, they were pregnant.
Six weeks later, Tracy began having severe abdominal pains.
Fearing pregnancy problems she went to the hospital where an
ultrasound was performed. This was the first ultra-sound on
Tracy since she became pregnant. Kidney stones were found to
be the problem, but the ultrasound also uncovered something
else. Four embryos, not one, were developing. Tracy glanced at
Rich in the back of room, but she couldn’t tell if his tears were
from joy or panic.
The couple was referred to a high-risk pregnancy specialist,
perinatologist Renee Bobrowski, M.D. “She was great,” said Tracy.
“We couldn’t have done it without her.” They toured the NICU
at Saint Alphonsus Maternity Center and knew this is where they
wanted their family to be born.
For Tracy, being pregnant with four meant being four times
as sick. In her sixth month she was admitted to the Maternity
Center. This was also time for Rich to begin remodeling their
nursery to accommodate four. Above the cribs, the names were
painted on the wall; Alexander, Benjamin, Samuel and Emilee.
Tracy and Rich were confident all would be coming home.
It was Saint Patrick’s Day, week-30, when the babies were born.
The O.R. staff prepared for the arrival of the first set of quads in
the history of Saint Alphonsus. The orchestrated procedure took
a team of 18 to deliver and care for the quads and the mother.
The delivery team included Dr. Bobrowski and Julia Bouchard,
M.D. The delivery went off as planned as Rich looked on in
amazement as his new family grew by the minute.
Following the delivery, the newborns’ care in the NICU was
directed by Neonatologist Stewart Lawrence, M.D. “The quads
prognosis is very good,” said Dr. Lawrence. “Their birth was one
in a million.”
One by one the babies left the NICU and went home. “By the
time we had three at home we knew we could handle it,” Rich
laughed. Rich then gave his advice for future parents of multiples,
“Plan ahead and organize! Take it one day at a time and you’ll get
through it…and good luck!”
Saint Alphonsus Launches
Treasure Valley’s first Obstetric
Hospitalist Program
Saint Alphonsus is proud to be the first Treasure
Valley hospital to offer an Obstetric (OB)
Hospitalist program for expecting mothers. This
special program provides 24 hour, 7 days-a-week
on-site hospital care for obstetric patients. The
program’s four OB Hospitalists are board-certified
obstetricians who oversee care for all patients
admitted to the Family Maternity Center.
The OB hospitalists do not have a private clinic
practice. They are dedicated to helping care for
patients in the Family Maternity Center during
labor when the patient’s provider is unavailable,
or if there is an emergency. This unique service is
available to all women who deliver their baby at
Saint Alphonsus.
Rakesh Pai, MD, Cardiologist,
Saint Alphonsus Idaho Heart Care
Dr. Rakesh Pai, a Saint
Alphonsus Idaho Heart Care
cardiologist who specializes
in electrophysiology
(electrical properties of
the heart), implanted
Idaho’s first new pacemaker
equipped with wireless
technology. The pacemaker
can notify the doctor of changes in their
patients’ device or condition, and is the first
pacemaker with automatic test results and
complete diagnostics that can be accessed
via wireless communication in a clinic or from
the patient’s home.
The pacemaker enables a physician to
monitor patients’ devices from the patients’
home, and can also alerting the doctor to
important changes with the device or the
patient’s heart rhythm.
Cardiac pacemakers are used to treat
bradycardia, which is a heart rate that is
too slow. These devices monitor the heart
and provide electrical stimulation when the
heart beats too slowly for a patient’s specific
physiological requirements.
DaVinci Robotics
Patients benefit from minimally-invasive procedure
Sacrocolpopexy is now being done laparoscopically with the da
Vinci Robotic Surgical System to treat patients with uterine and
vaginal vault prolapse. Using the da Vinci, the new procedure
enables surgeons to perform a minimally invasive surgery through
small incisions. In 2002, Saint Alphonsus was the first hospital
in Idaho to offer the da Vinci. The da Vinci enhances the
surgeon’s range of motion, precision and dexterity, all crucial in
the complex anatomy surrounding the pelvic region.
There are 120,000 plus cases of uterine and vaginal vault
prolapses (or falling) surgically treated each year in the United
States. Prolapse occurs when the connective tissues or muscles
within the body cavity are weak and unable
to hold the pelvis in its natural orientation.
Weakening of connective tissues accelerates
with age, after child birth, with weight gain
and strenuous physical labor.
“This new, laparoscopic technology
provides great advantages to the surgeon
and the patient,” says David B. Rice, MD
David B. Rice, MD
First Sacrocolpopexy Procedure in Idaho
with Idaho Urologic Institute, and the first surgeon in Idaho
to perform the procedure with the da Vinci. “The ‘roboticsurgical
assistant’ helps to advance precision in complex
surgeries,” Rice adds. A typical incision done with conventional
surgical tools is 15-30 cm (6 to 12 inches), while the da Vinci
uses keyhole-sized incisions. The technology affords the surgeon
a 3-dimensional, 10 times magnified view of the operating field.
Benefits:
• Less pain and faster recovery. With robotic-assisted
surgery, recovery times can be cut in half.
• Less blood loss and need for transfusions
• Less risk of infection, scarring, and a quicker return to
normal activities.
For the past seven years, the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System
at Saint Alphonsus has been used by urologists from Idaho
Urologic Institute for radical prostatectomies. In addition, other
laparoscopic procedures such as colectomies and hysterectomies
are also currently being performed at Saint Alphonsus.
Artists in Residency Program
In December Saint Alphonsus launched a new program aimed
to help heal the body, mind and spirit of our patients, visitors
and staff with a new Artist In Residency (AIR) program. The
purpose of AIR is to bring performing artists into the medical
center to interact with patients, visitors and staff. The Saint
Alphonsus AIR program is modeled after a similar program
based out of the University of Florida Performing Arts (UFPA)
center and was developed in collaboration with UFPA and Trey
McIntyre Project.
“When you think about it, hospitals and health care settings are
individual communities who have restricted access to cultural
activities,” said UFPA Assistant Director Elizabeth Auer. “Add
the stress and uncertainty for the future, and the arts are a natural
fit to reach these populations as a healing tool.”
Planners at Saint Alphonsus hope to build on this beginning
of the AIR Program with myriad art forms and artists – in
music, visual arts, poetry and spoken word, and other forms of
improvisational and performing arts.
“It was incredibly eyeopening
to realize the
ability art has to change
people’s lives, and how
it can be used as an
instrument of healing.”
– John Michael Schert, Executive
Director of the Trey McIntyre Project
“It was a real joy. It
brightened my day a
lot. Having to be in the
hospital is kind of rotten,
but this is a real joy.”
– Breck Long, Stroke Patient
“We can’t cure them, but
we can soften their hearts.
Make them laugh or make
them cry even. I think
of it as opening up their
spirit a bit.”
Telehealth Programs at
Saint Alphonsus:
• Emergency
• Cardiology
• Congestive Heart Failure
• Neurology/Stroke Care
• Newborn Care
• High Risk Maternity
• Outpatient Psychiatry
• Education Outreach
Saint Alphonsus continues to be one of the leaders in the field
of telehealth. Saint Alphonsus utilizes Remote Presence Robotic
technology to bring advanced medical care to greater numbers
of patients resulting in better outcomes, improved quality,
and more efficient use of medical resources. In 2009, Saint
Alphonsus became one of the first hospitals in the world to use
MultiPresence technology, which allows physicians in multiple
locations to connect to one Robot and consult on one case
simultaneously.
In 2009, Saint Alphonsus implemented several new programs
to improve community hospital access to specialty care. The
Emergency Specialist Program (ESP) provides 24/7 access to
Board Certified Emergency Physicians. When a patient presents
at a local community hospital in our network, an Emergency
Physician at Saint Alphonsus is available to connect to the Robot
and provide consultation, and engage subspecialists, if needed,
via MultiPresence technology. Although this program is available
for any emergency case, the primary focus is on ensuring that
the first hour of treatment for time-sensitive cases, such as
heart attack, stroke, sepsis, and trauma is the same regardless of
Rural Robots
patient location. Through the use of standardized protocols and
consultation via robotic technology, Saint Alphonsus is working
to ensure that patients receive the right care at the right place at
the right time.
Another program introduced in 2009 is the Saint Alphonsus
Telepsychiatry Clinic. This program provides rural communities
who lack psychiatrists with access to psychiatric care via our
robots. Psychiatrists at Saint Alphonsus are able to connect
remotely to partnering hospitals to conduct live patients
appointments. To date, 84 adults and 39 children have been
seen for a total of 498 telepsychiatry appointments. Prior to this
Telepsychiatry Clinic, approximately 88% of patients we’ve seen
had no direct access to psychiatric care and the other 12% were
driving over an hour for such care.
An outpatient heart failure clinic was also developed in 2009.
People with heart failure are able to meet with a Clinical Nurse
Specialist via our robots to learn about strategies for selfmanagement.
Saint Alphonsus Offers Breast Care
Nurse Navigator Services
When a woman hears the words “breast cancer,”
it’s likely that very little of what is said about the
next steps in her care is heard. Saint Alphonsus
launched Breast Care Nurse Navigator services to
help guide patients diagnosed with cancer through
the often complex and overwhelming aspects
of breast cancer care, from treatment to social
services to rehabilitation.
The Saint Alphonsus Breast Care Nurse Navigator acts as a liaison to the
patient as they move through the healthcare system. They work with a
multi-disciplinary team of physicians, including; primary care practitioners,
radiologists, surgeons and oncologists who discuss and determine the best
course of care for a person newly diagnosed with breast cancer. The Nurse
Navigator provides a support system for patients through their cancer
journey.
Idaho Spasticity Program
John Shilt, PA-C, Vic Kadyan, MD, Jeff Shilt, MD, Terri Cron, RN, Taryn Williams, PT
In March 2009, Saint Alphonsus started the Idaho Spasticity Program, an interdisciplinary program designed to
support children and adults affected by spasticity. Spasticity is a movement disorder that occurs following an
injury to the central nervous system (the brain or spinal cord) causing muscle tightness and increased resistance
to movement. It is often seen in conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple
sclerosis, or cerebral palsy. There are varying degrees of spasticity which may result in interference with activities
of daily living, walking, and sleep.
The Spasticity Program began out of the interest of Dr. Jeff Shilt, Pediatric Orthopaedic Medical Director
at Saint Alphonsus. Dr. Shilt is joined by Dr. Vic Kadyan, a physiatrist with Boise Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, who has over ten years of experience in physiatry and shares Dr. Shilt’s interest in creating a local
program to treat these patients who historically have not had many treatment options.
The goal of the Idaho Spasticity Program is to enhance the quality of life of children and adults with spasticity
through a comprehensive array of treatment options. If spasticity is moderate to severe and interferes with
movement or activities of daily living, there are several treatments that may help, these include; physical therapy,
bracing, injections, and surgery.
In addition to the many treatment options, one of the great strengths of the Idaho Spasticity Program is the
multi-disciplinary approach. Patients are seen by either Dr. Shilt or Dr. Kadyan, and Taryn Williams, PT,
and Terri Cron, RN. All patients’ treatments are reviewed in a group setting where alternative treatments are
discussed. This multi-disciplinary treatment creates a collaborative team approach to patients care and provides
an individualized treatment plan for each patient.
The Tabitha Schofield Story
Gift from Haiti
Steven and Diane Schofield had been married for ten years. They had
a nice home in Boise and three healthy, happy children. Life was good
and they wanted to share their blessings, so they decided to adopt.
When the decision was made to adopt from Haiti, they felt it should be
a sibling group. They believed the adjustment for a foreign child would
be easier with a sibling.
Through an adoption agency the couple contacted Foyer de Sion
Orphanage in Port-au-Prince. They received photos of Teancum and
Tabitha who had been abandoned by their mother. “I felt they were ours
from the moment I saw their picture,” recalled Diane.
Four months later the Schofields flew to Haiti to meet the two kids.
Tabitha was 14 months and her older brother Teancum was four
years. Both were malnourished, but otherwise appeared healthy. Their
visit validated what they had known in their hearts - these were “their
children.” The adoption process would take a year or more, so the
couple sadly left the children at the orphanage and returned to Idaho.
Over a month had passed when Tabitha was hospitalized for pneumonia
in the St. Francois de Sales Hospital in Port-au-Prince. During her stay,
she was mistakenly given an overdose of TB vaccine. Other infants had
also received the vaccine and all had died. Tabitha was the only survivor,
but was in a coma and not expected to live.
The orphanage offered to send the Schofields photos of other children
so they could re-select. But Diane and Steven were undaunted. Those
were “their children.” Diane returned to Haiti and applied for a medical
visa. If Tabitha was to survive, her best odds were in the US.
Tabitha arrived in Boise semi-comatose, frail, with limbs as stiff as twigs
and near death. The stiffness in her arms and legs was a condition called
spasticity, a result from brain damage caused by her drug overdose.
Defying the odds, Tabitha had now survived for seven months and was
gaining weight. But the limb rigidity remained.
Tabitha was enrolled in the pediatric Jumpstart Program with Saint
Alphonsus Rehabilitation Services (STARS) in Meridian. Her medical
care was also transferred to pediatrician Stacey Townsend, MD., with the
Saint Alphonsus Medical Group in Eagle.
To treat Tabitha’s spasticity, Dr. Townsend referred Tabitha to Jeffrey
Shilt, MD, Pediatric Orthopaedic Medical Director at Saint Alphonsus
and Vic Kadyan, MD, Physiatrist with Boise Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation. Dr. Shilt surgically implanted a device to deliver
medication at required intervals, which would treat the spasticity. Dr.
Kadyan managed the physical rehabilitation following surgery.
The specialized treatment allowed near normal movement of the child’s
limbs, and improved her quality of life. Her extremely damaged brain
still threatens her life. The family knows “each day is a gift.” A plaque sits
in their home with those words engraved, as reminder, “We know her
heart can turn off any time, but for us, Tabitha has been a gift.”
Saint Al’s Goes Green
The Mulvaney Medical Office Building
celebrated a green grand opening on
September 23 with over 100 people
attending the ceremony to honor the
building’s namesakes, Sisters Patricia
Saint Alphonsus Opens Travel Medical Clinic
Saint Alphonsus opened a Travel Medicine Clinic in 2009 to offer
travelers special medical care and counsel before they travel abroad.
Our Travel Medicine Clinic includes pre-travel consultation and
evaluation, contingency planning during travel, and post-travel
follow-up and care. In addition, to last year’s announcement of
Central District Health closing its doors to those who need adult
immunizations, the Saint Alphonsus Travel Medicine Clinic provides
those important vaccinations as well.
The Travel Medicine Clinic is staffed by Jeffery Dzieczkowski, MD, a
board-certified Internal Medicine physician who specializes in Travel
Medicine, and Vinci Anderson, RN, a travel medicine nurse who is
experienced in counseling patients on travel health and administering
immunization programs.
As traveling worldwide is becoming easier and more common given
our global economy, it’s important for travelers to understand the
importance of maintaining their health in foreign countries. The Saint
Alphonsus Travel Medicine Clinic was established to help travelers
make the right decisions about their travels to greatly reduce the
risk of travel-related illnesses and injuries. From immunizations to
advice on over-the-counter products and accessing health care while
overseas, the staff at the travel clinic will give seasoned travel advice
about making overseas adventure healthy as well as fun.
The Saint Alphonsus Travel Medicine clinic recommends checking
the following list of essentials for healthy traveling, known as the
“7 I’s of travel health:”
1. Immunizations
2. Insects: repellents, nets, medication
3. Ingestion: water and food safety
4. Indiscretion: HIV, sexually transmitted disease
5. Injuries: accident avoidance, personal safety
6. Immersion: water-borne illnesses, parasites
7. Insurance: coverage, services, access to care
Next time you travel overseas, plan ahead by scheduling an
appointment two or three months before you travel to make sure
your immunizations are up-to-date and to find out about the latest
health risks in countries you plan to visit. The clinic is located at 6140
W. Curtisian, Suite 300. To schedule a Travel Medicine visit, call 367-
“Every 15 Minutes”
Local Schools & Agencies Involved in Drunk Driving Prevention Efforts
Many schools in rural Idaho are starting to get involved
in grassroots efforts to educate teens about the dangerous
consequences of drinking and driving. A program called “Every
15 Minutes”, named for the US national statistic that someone
dies every fifteen minutes from an alcohol-related crash, has been
filtering into local schools around the region. Mountain View High
School held the event for its second time on April 29-30, 2009.
A few highlights of the Every 15 Minutes program include:
• simulates a drunk driving crash where there are critical injuries
and fatalities - local emergency response agencies respond to
the crash scene
• re-enacts the actions when a drunk driver is tested, booked
and jailed
• includes one student being removed from a junior and senior
class - every 15 minutes - to underscore the alarming statistic
related to this problem
• includes parents of the students directly involved in the reenactment
and those removed from class who receive simulated
death notifications from law enforcement
• incorporates special retreats targeted to students and parents
directly involved in the re-enactments
• ends with a school assembly for juniors and seniors where:
participating students and their parents are reunited and relay
their feelings about what happened; they view a video of the
previous day’s re-enactments; and hear compelling speeches
from guest speakers shared at the assembly.
“Every 15 Minutes offers real-life experience without the real-life
risks,” says Linda Sevison, Corrections Corporation of America
Public Information Officer and coordinator of the Every 15
Minutes program in Idaho. “This program challenges students
to think about drinking, personal safety, and the responsibility
of making mature decisions when lives are involved. And it gives
parents tools to have regular discussions about the impact such
tragic actions can have on everyone.”
The Every 15 Minutes program debuted in Idaho in 2004 and
is annually sponsored by and developed through the help of
the Idaho Correctional Center/CCA, Saint Alphonsus, Ada
County Sheriff, Ada County Paramedics, and local schools, fire
departments, businesses and public agencies.
The fourth annual Ski & Mountain Trauma Conference was held
in Sun Valley November 13 & 14, 2009. This year the conference
hosted more than 325 attendees and offered continuing education
credits to Nurses, EMS personnel, Physicians, Physician
Assistants, and Ski Patrol.
This symposium continues to be the fastest growing emergency
response educational seminar for pre-hospital and hospital
providers in the Northwest. Attendees traveled from as far as
Arizona and California to advance their emergency medical skills
in a fun and energizing environment.
This two-day event included pre-conference workshops, handson
simulation labs, trauma case reviews, break-out sessions and
presentations by a variety of top-notch national and regional
experts in the emergency response field.
Our keynote speaker was Gordon Giesbrecht, PhD who is a
professor of thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba in
Saint Alphonsus Ski & Mountain Trauma Conference
Winnipeg, Canada. He has been conducting laboratory and field
research on human responses to cold for 20 years and spoke on
‘Cold Water Immersion.’ Also, one of America’s most respected
climbers and our friend, Lou Whittaker, joined us again this year
to share tales of his life as a young mountain rescuer and the
thrilling challenges of mountains such as K2, Kanchenjunga,
McKinley & Everest.
Conference Founder, Dr. Richard Moore, and other Saint
Alphonsus physicians, Dr. Bill Morgan, Dr. Adam Deutchman,
Dr. Michael Coughlin, Dr. Christian Zimmerman and Dr. Ronald
Jutzy were able to provide insight into their specialties as they
relate to emergency medicine.
With the continued support of our sponsors, Saint Alphonsus
will hold the fifth annual Ski & Mountain Trauma Conference
November 5 – 6, 2010 and continue to provide quality education
to providers in order to better serve patients both in the hospital
as well as in field.
Thank you
to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints for donating beautifully handmade
blankets to our Refugee Clinic! These twin
girls greatly appreciated warm blankets!
With a reputation for being welcoming and affordable, Boise
has become one of a select number of U.S. cities to serve as
a “resettlement” destination for international refugee families.
More than 5,000 men, women, and children fleeing troubled
regions around the globe – such as Somalia, Burma, and now
Iraq – have found a home in the Treasure Valley. Refugees arrive
here with few possessions, limited English proficiency, and little
understanding of “Western medicine.” They present complex
medical needs after years of malnutrition, physical violence,
and limited access to healthcare. The fear of unfamiliar medical
practices is particularly troubling for expectant mothers, who face
the anxiety of childbirth in a system where everything – from
insurance coverage to appointment scheduling to basic prenatal
exams – is overwhelmingly foreign.
Saint Alphonsus has responded to the need to provide
compassionate and culturally competent prenatal care to the
steady number of refugee maternity patients arriving each year in
Boise. In 2009, with start-up funding supplied by Trinity Health,
the Saint Alphonsus Family Center opened the CARE maternal/
child clinic, to provide specialized prenatal and pediatrics care on
behalf of refugee families. In addition to providing basic medical
services to ensure healthy outcomes for mothers and babies,
Refugee Clinic
CARE features supportive services including peer health mentors
(from the patient’s own culture of origin), childbirth preparation
and parenting classes, and an “incentive store” (where families can
redeem points earned for healthy behaviors in exchange for infant
care items). CARE has also conducted educational outreach to
area healthcare professionals and interpreters to increase the
quality of health services provided to this unique and vulnerable
population.
In its first six months of operation, CARE had already seen
more than 70 expectant mothers, and welcomed 20 newborns
to southwestern Idaho. The project has met with gratitude and
an extremely positive reception from patients and healthcare
providers alike.
“By examining the cultural relevance of everything that we do,
and seeking to understand pregnancy and parenting from our
patients’ perspective, and with the guidance of our peer health
advisors, we have built trust across what was a daunting cultural
chasm,” says CARE project manager and Family Center director
Judith Hobbs. “This project is a shining example of Saint
Alphonsus’ healthcare mission in its purest form.”
A Tree-mendous Success
The Saint Alphonsus Festival of Trees of 2009 was a great
success, fulfilling the 3-year commitment to raising $1.1 million
dollars to help fund new patient floors within the central tower of
the Center for Advanced Healing.
Chaired by longtime supporters, Susan and Bryan Norby, the
Festival drew hundreds of volunteers, tens of thousands of
visitors, and sold-out the signature events: the Gala and the
Fashion Show.
A new element was added this year – the “Boise’s Got Talent”
showcase. In a partnership with donnie mac’s Trailer Park
Cuisine, local performers qualified to sing, dance, and/or play
music in the final round at the Festival of Trees. The audience
was impressed with all the performers – including the 7-year old
crooner, Sammi Swenson; smooth singer-songwriter and guitarist,
Dan Costello; the energetic quartet called ‘Out of Order’
specializing in Americana music; and the rock group Workin’
on Fire which is made up of four musicians who write original
songs – and just finished junior high. The grand prize, however,
went to the winner of the People’s Choice vote: Rob Paper. Rob
won the opportunity to perform at the Curtis Stigers X-Treme
X-Travaganza at the Egyptian Theater in December, and some
recording time at the Audio Lab. He wowed guests at the Festival
and made everyone’s season brighter.
Other special features of the Festival were:
• Iron Designer – a friendly competition among local designers
in which De Zborowski from j. Michael’s Florist, Wine & Gifts,
defended her title from 2007 and 2008
• New magic shows by Odyssey Illusions made possible by the
Jeker Family Trust
• Gorgeous Main Entry display that was a true work of art;
it was designed by Joe Kubik and Monica Walker at Carol’s
Design House and developed and constructed by engineers at
the Yanke Machine Shop
• “Celebritree” guest appearances on radio, TV, billboards and
Facebook
1,000 kids participate in the 2009
Saint Alphonsus Capitol Classic Children’s Race
Saturday, June 6th was a special day in downtown Boise. Capitol
Boulevard was closed to traffic because it was time for the annual
Saint Alphonsus Capitol Classic. This year, 1,000 kids braved
the pouring rain and ran, walked, or skipped their way down the
one mile route from the historic Boise Depot to the landmark
Idaho Statehouse. Children ages 6 – 14 were joined in warm-ups
by the cheerleaders from Capital High School and many of the
area mascots like our own Alphonzo Bear, Humphrey Hawk, and
Star from Carl’s Jr. This event has become a tradition as it kicks
off the summer for many Treasure Valley families. It was a great
success and even though the weather could have cooperated a bit
more, everyone enjoyed the fitness of the race and the fun of the
Finish Fair in Capitol Park.
BIG THANKS TO ALL OF THE 200+ VOLUNTEERS who
helped make this a fun and safe event and special thanks to the
wonderful associates from Saint Alphonsus who came out to
support this tradition of healthy kids in Boise!
Capitol Classic
Sponsors making this event possible included Bank of America,
United Dairymen of Idaho, Meadow Gold Dairy, Norco,
Slattery Orthodontics, Shu’s Idaho Running Company, Virgin
HealthMiles, and Dr. Christian & Kathryn Zimmerman. At the
Finish Fair all of the runners were treated to hot dogs by Thomas
Cuisine Management, frozen yogurt from TCBY, milk from
Meadow Gold Dairy, cookies from Great Harvest Bread Co.,
and water provided by STARS (Saint Alphonsus Rehabilitation
Services). Thanks also to those who helped provide scholarships
so that any child who wanted could participate.
See you next year at the 28th annual Capitol Classic on Saturday,
June 5, 2010!
Every child is a winner and gets a medal, a special memento
to commemorate the day’s accomplishment!
Dear Saint Alphonsus Staff,
I think you know how much my family and I
appreciate the Saint Al’s Foundation, so I’ll
just let you know that we loved the Capitol
Classic Race again this year. As you could tell,
even the rain couldn’t stop Sammy from being
excited and wanting to go, go, go. It was hard
to keep up with him.
Please pass along our sincere appreciation to
the volunteers, vendors and the Foundation.
You all have blessed our family so much that
it really is hard to put into words our sincere
gratitude for what you and Saint Al’s do for
not only us, but our whole community.
Hope this finds you well!
On January 12th, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit
Port-au-Prince, Haiti killing hundred of thousands
and leaving the city and surrounding area in utter
devastation. The people and children of Haiti
needed our help more than ever.
Since that fateful day, more than $362,000 has
been raised by Saint Alphonsus Project Haiti to
continue their support of the work of Father Rick
Frechette as he serves the poor in Haiti. Medical
supplies and pharmaceuticals were on their way
shortly after the news of the earthquake was heard.
Monetary donations have come from 27 states
and from 55 towns in Idaho. Many schools in our
community have held their own fundraising events,
raising thousands of dollars, all benefitting Project
Haiti. Together we are truly making a difference in
the lives of so many of Haiti’s earthquake victims.
Reaching Beyond Our Community
For the past 15 years, the Saint Alphonsus Foundation expanded
its mission far beyond the state of Idaho and into the Republic of
Haiti, a “fifth-world” country more than 3,000 miles away. When
they met Father Rick Frechette, they knew that they had to help
and Project Haiti was born.
Through a modest humanitarian effort called Project Haiti, Saint
Alphonsus and our community have reached out to this country
and are dedicated to serving the poor of Haiti.
This year, we were again able to send a medical mission team to
Haiti, the first one since the new hospital opened in 2006. The
digital x-ray system that took three years of fundraising is fully
operational and we continued to support the lab with training,
education and supplies.
15 years of Devotion
While Project Haiti has at times been the recipient of an
unexpectedly large gift, for which the project supporters were
exceedingly grateful, the mission has been sustained over the
years primarily through the modest donation of many, loyal
contributors – a point of pride for the
Saint Alphonsus Foundation.
Plan to join this year’s annual fundraising dinner on Friday,
September 17, 2010 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. If you would
Men’s Health
Over 500 men for Prostate Cancer
Again this year, Saint Alphonsus was a proud sponsor of the Main Street Mile and “Drive Against
Prostate Cancer” screenings. The “Drive Against Prostate Cancer” mobile screening unit traveled
around the Treasure Valley to offer free prostate screenings.
Throughout the four days, 500-plus men were screened for prostate cancer. The prostate
screenings are a 10 to 15 minute process that includes filling out consent forms, a procedure which
involves a blood draw to test PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels, and a physical examination
(digital rectal exam or DRE).
Wrapping up the four days of mobile prostate screening was the Main Street Mile event held in the
streets of downtown Boise. Thirty-nine Saint Al’s team members ran/ walked this year. The Main
Street Mile not only provided some fun for all participants, but it helped to raise awareness about
prostate cancer and how important it is for men to be screened early and often.
Many thanks go to the Saint Al’s volunteers who helped with the screenings and the race. Special
thanks to: Heather Jones, Carrie Hall, Linda Payne Smith, Jill Aldape, Randy Hudspeth, Bill
Cafferty, Ryan Lund, and Paula Coulter.
Inside Ride
The Fourth Annual Inside Ride was held Saturday, January 31 at the Boise
Towne Square Mall. Ninety-six cyclists rode with the elite distance range
being 19 to 25 miles in one hour. Teams from Boise cycle clubs as well as
Saint Al’s physicians and staff who are cyclists participated.
Inside Ride sponsors include the Saint Alphonsus Heart and Vascular
Center, Idaho Heart Care Physicians, Women’s Healthcare Fund, Secret
Sisters and the Cardio Chicks. Idaho Mountain Touring continued to be
a major supporter, as they have been for the three previous years. The
Southwest Mountain Bike Association (SWIMBA) and Gold’s Gym joined
the event this year. Gold’s supported the event with cheerleaders for each
race. Sanofi-Aventis pharmaceuticals furnished power bars and gu energy
gel and Coca Cola furnished Power Aid drinks and water.
Volunteer mechanic work was provided by Antonio Gonzalez (Idaho Mtn
Touring), Mike Judge (CVOR), Dylan Gradhandt (Cath Lab) and Broken
Spoke Cycle Club, who worked each hour race throughout the day. Randy
Hudspeth, Event Coordinator, reported that this is the first year that
generated sufficient funds to benefit patients. Previously the event focused
on public awareness of heart disease. A patient scholarship fund targeted
to defray the co-payment cost for patients needing cardiac rehab is being
established.
Thank you to all of the Saint Al’s family who supported the event.
Caring For Expectant
Moms at Risk
Pregnancy is a time of great expectation. For
mothers-to-be who are placed on long-term
prescribed bed rest, it can also be a time
of tremendous anxiety. Maternity patients
experiencing a high-risk pregnancy may be
admitted to the Saint Alphonsus antepartum
unit from a few days to several weeks for
advanced prenatal care and monitoring.
During this time, expectant mothers put their
daily lives on hold, in order to increase their
chances of delivering healthy, full-term babies.
To best meet the physical, emotional,
and spiritual needs of maternity patients
hospitalized for extended periods, Saint
Alphonsus has introduced the Bedrest
Bootcamp program. Bedrest Bootcamp
supports antepartum patients to maintain
a positive outlook while restricted to their
hospital beds, by providing recreational
outlets, computer access to conduct personal
business, stress management activities,
wellness education, and companionship.
Supported in part by a Foundation grant,
Bedrest Bootcamp provides a family-friendly,
homelike environment to help patients cope
with the loss of independence, counter
the boredom of confinement, and manage
fears related to their unborn baby’s welfare.
Bedrest Bootcamp enrolls approximately 60
expectant mothers each year.
Further Recovery For Spinal Cord Patients
The Saint Alphonsus Rehabilitation Services (STARS) outpatient program offers specialized
therapy for patients recovering from a wide variety of injuries in order to restore physical
function and maintain wellness. As medical research continues to advance clinical knowledge
related to musculoskeletal health, STARS therapists seek to introduce new treatment methods
to assist patients to achieve their personal rehabilitation goals.
With funding supplied by a Foundation grant, STARS acquired a Rehab Reformer in 2009
to increase the range of rehabilitation equipment available to patients recovering from back
injuries. This pilates-based unit is designed to target the “core” muscles of the low back and
abdomen. Research has demonstrated that strengthening these core muscles can result in
a significant decrease in impairment related to existing back injuries, as well as a decreased
likelihood of repeated injuries.
Nearly 200 patients had already benefited from this equipment in its first six months of use,
with patients reporting an increased ability to feel when they are using their core correctly
and effectively while exercising and during daily activities. STARS therapists have reported
improvement in patients’ core muscle engagement within just three treatment sessions, bringing
them closer to their goals in a shorter period of time.
Since 1999, the Foundation grants program has reinvested more
than $3.7 million of hospital earnings and unrestricted gifts to
enhance healthcare in Saint Alphonsus facilities and across the
Treasure Valley. In 2009, the Foundation awarded nearly $200,000
to launch 14 new initiatives.
These projects included efforts to reduce disease transmission
in the community; increase expertise and treatment options
in specialized medical fields; increase access to critical care
by rural patients; increase the functionality of our medical
Staying Ahead of H1N1
Leading Community Preparation for H1N1 Immunization, Education, & Prevention
This year, the flu season started several weeks earlier than anticipated. Just days after kids started back to school in the fall, our
emergency departments, Express Cares, Urgent Cares, and Saint Alphonsus Medical Group clinics experienced a surge of patients—
almost two times the normal season’s volume.
Saint Alphonsus was prepared. A number of years ago, Saint Alphonsus established a pandemic planning task force and that process
kicked into high gear this last year as Saint Alphonsus stepped up as one of the leaders in the community. A Flu Task Force dispatched
separate groups to handle operations, medical management, communications, facilities, and supplies, each with clearly-articulated goals.
Along the way, physicians were involved in the process, including front-line emergency physicians.
As the influx of patients hit, Saint Alphonsus implemented plans for regular conference calls involving Treasure Valley hospital
administrators, physicians, nurses, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and others, to address everything from supply chain issues to how
to communicate new information to providers and the community at large, and which facilities needed extra staff.
Outreach Efforts
The following are some examples in which
Saint Alphonsus helped to meet the
community during this time of need:
• Influenza Treatment Guidelines: Along
with Emergency Medical Services (EMS),
we coauthored an English/Spanish handout
for the local paramedics (including both
Ada and Canyon counties) to assist in
serving patients.
• H1N1 Vaccines: Over 5,000 vaccines
were provided for associates, physicians,
the Board of Trustees and spouses, the
Foundation Board and spouses, hospital
volunteers, vendors, law enforcement, fire
and EMS providers in Ada County.
• Visitation Policies: To protect patients in
the hospital, visitor policies were revised to
help control the spread of the virus.
• Education & Communications: From Public
Service Announcements and press releases,
to one-one interviews with the media, to
informational handouts provided to all
access points, and updated information on
our website, Saint Alphonsus used every
avenue possible to keep the public informed
of the latest information on H1N1.
• Respiratory Etiquette Stations: Through
a grant facilitated by the Saint Alphonsus
Foundation, all hospital and medical clinics
in this region received respiratory etiquette
stations containing masks, hand sanitizers,
and tissues—all in an effort to reduce the
spread of the flu.
awarded the Gold Medal of Honor by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS) in recognition of our commitment
to saving lives through organ donation and
transplantation – and adopting the national
goal of converting 75 percent of eligible
deaths into actual organ donors. Saint
Alphonsus is one of 30 hospitals in the U.S.,
and the only hospital in Idaho, to receive
national recognition for the 12-month award
period ending in May 2009.
On behalf of Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, COO
Janelle Reilly accepts the Gold Medal of Honor by HHS for
organ donation and transplantation from Mike Seely, Executive
Director of the Pacific Northwest Transplant Bank.
Slowly but Surely — The Ashley Rivers Story
Ashley and her mother Lynn were talking to each other on
their cell phones as they were driving in separate directions
in their home town of Twin Falls, Idaho. Lynn heard Ashley
scream and then the line went dead. Lynn turned her car
around and headed in the direction of Ashley’s last known
location. When she approached an intersection blocked off
by police and medical units, her heart sank.
Lynn arrived in time to watch fireman cut away the driver’s
door and place Ashley on a stretcher. She followed the
ambulance to the E.R. where she learned that Ashley may
have a brain injury. Her best hope was Saint Alphonsus
Regional Medical Center in Boise.
A Life Flight helicopter flew Ashley and Lynn to Boise. At
Saint Alphonsus, Lynn met Frederick Foss, M.D., F.A.C.S.,
the trauma team leader, and neurosurgeon Michael V. Hajjar,
M.D. Now comatose, their examinations revealed the
seventeen-year-old had a traumatic brain injury.
After 27 days in ICU, and while still in a coma, Ashley was
moved into a patient room. Weeks went by as Ashley slowly
emerged from her coma and began to breathe on her own.
Now awakened, Ashley’s recovery would enter another phase.
Michael McMartin, M.D. now took charge of her further
recovery, leading the Brain Injury Team with Saint Alphonsus
Inpatient Rehabilitation. Their job was to re-train Ashley’s
brain and body and overcome a spectrum of medical,
physical, cognitive, behavioral and psychological challenges.
Lynn celebrated each new milestone, as they came slowly, but
consistently; Ashley’s first intelligible words, re-learning to
dress herself, her first steps, even logging into Facebook. “I
saw glimpses of her humor and tenacity and it was a joy to
behold,” Lynn said proudly.
On the four-month anniversary of her arrival at Saint
Alphonsus, Ashley went home. Her outpatient therapy
continued with Saint Alphonsus Rehabilitation Services in
Meridian (STARS). For Ashley, recovery is now measured in
years. Reflecting on her daughter’s journey, Lynn said, “She
isn’t back to where she was, but it’s definitely a miracle how
far she’s come.”
Ashley still struggles with her speech, which is slow and
slightly slurred, giving the impression that her thought
process is also slow. But when asked about her traumatic
brain injury, Ashley looked up and asked, “What brain injury
isn’t traumatic?” Her rhetorical question cleared up any
doubt about her thought process.
2009 Distinguished Citizen Honorees
On May 19, the Saint Alphonsus Foundation honored Dr. Shauna
Williams as the 2009 Distinguished Individual Citizen and
the Harry W. Morrison Foundation as the 2009 Distinguished
Corporate Citizen.
Dr. Shauna Williams
Dr. Shauna Williams graduated from Brigham Young University with degrees in
Nursing and Zoology and a Masters of Science in Physiology. She then attended
medical school at the University of Hawaii. Shauna served internships and
fellowships at Oregon Health Sciences University, then finished her education
with a colon and rectal fellowship at the Mayo Clinic.
In 1991, Dr. Williams started her own private practice in Boise as a colorectal
surgeon. Shauna is currently president of Northwest Society of Colon and
Rectal Surgeons; a fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal
Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons; and a
member of the Idaho Medical Association, the Priestly
Society (Mayo Clinic Surgical Society), the Ada County
Medical Society, and Best Doctors in America. Shauna
serves on the St. Mark’s Catholic School Foundation
Board, is part of the Saint Alphonsus Women’s
Healthcare Fund, and was the 2001 recipient of the
TWIN Award from Women’s and Children’s Alliance.
Shauna’s contributions to Saint Alphonsus are many,
including her roles on the Board of Trustees and
Foundation Board, and the Building Committee from
2003-2008. She has been a leader as president of the
Medical Staff from 2003-2005, and chair of the Cancer
Committee from 1997-2001, the Medical Executive
Committee from 2001-2005, and Project Genesis
Physician from 2004 to present.
Shauna’s interests include golf, downhill skiing,
whitewater rafting and travel; however, her lifelong
passion is fly fishing. She co-owns the Idaho Angler Fly Fishing Shop and is
a certified fly fishing instructor. As the Medical Facilitator for the Casting for
Recovery program, she helps women dealing with the struggles of breast cancer.
Shauna is married to Rick Williams, PhD, who is a fish geneticist and a Master
Fly-Fishing Casting Instructor. Their son, Chris, also an avid fly fisherman, is in
the 8th grade at St. Mark’s. Saint Alphonsus is truly blessed to have Dr. Shauna
Williams as a member of our community.
Harry W. Morrison Foundation
Railroads, highways, pipelines, airports, military bases,
space centers - an astounding inventory of structures on
every continent of the globe. Before he could build big
things, Harry had to build the company that could do the
jobs. He co-founded Morrison-Knudsen Company with
Morris Knudsen in 1912.
Harry instituted many innovations in the construction
industry, but the one he is most known for is the concept
of the “joint venture,” in which several companies
combine their expertise, equipment, and financial
resources to tackle jobs too big for one company. The
joint venture known as Six Companies built Hoover
Dam (Boulder Dam) in the early 1930s.
In 1952, Harry Morrison and his first wife, Ann, created what was then called
the Morrison Family Foundation as a means of supporting educational and
charitable institutions. The Foundation quietly continued the family tradition
of building things, this time in the context of community service. Funds went
to church and college building funds, scholarship programs, scout camps, and a
wide variety of other community programs, mostly in Idaho.
When Ann died in 1957, Harry built Ann Morrison Memorial Park and
dedicated it to the citizens of Boise. Harry had also wanted to build a
performing arts center in Boise, inspired by a lifelong love of music and
Broadway shows. Upon his death
in 1972, his second wife, Velma,
Announcing the 2010 Distinguished Citizens
fulfilled this dream.
Through her leadership as
president of the Morrison
Foundation, Velma and the
community of Boise built the
Velma V. Morrison Center for the
Performing Arts. It is with great
pleasure that we honor the Harry
W. Morrison Foundation as the
2009 Distinguished Corporate
Citizen for the generosity and
support the Foundation has shown
to our community.
Alphonzo Lost and Found
On Sunday, June 7th I came into your Gift Shop to find a replacement teddy bear
for my five-year-old daughter who had lost her precious “Alphonzo” in Tulsa,
Oklahoma on a trip we had just returned from. I had assured her that Alphonzo
would find his way home. Apparently, you have switched vendors and no longer
offer that style of bear. I was panicked that I wouldn’t be able to make good on
my assurances. However, the two people (I wish I had caught their names) that
were working that afternoon spent over an hour of their time searching shelves,
back rooms, calling departments in the hospital, looking through display cases, and
even calling loved ones who may have that bear. In the end, we found one last
display case by door 6 that had one! I was able to have Alphonzo sitting on the
front porch holding an airline ticket after all!
In many other settings I would probably have been told that I was out of luck,
but these wonderful people devoted themselves to doing whatever it took to make
sure my daughter would have her favorite companion again. I can’t thank you
enough for the love that was shown to a complete stranger on that day.
Thank you,
Luke Tanner
