HEADTEACHER
Niall Smith
As we all know, a
rounded education is
comprised of much
more than examination
results. Sports, music,
the arts all play their
part, as well as specific
schemes such as
Young Enterprise,
the Combined Cadet
Force and the Duke
of Edinburgh Award
Scheme. Another
important part is the
area of the curriculum
known as PSHCE or,
more properly, Personal
Social Health Citizenship
Education.
Here at Southborough
we deliver the PSHCE curriculum via termly “drop days” when we
suspend the timetable and organise special sessions which cover
all the important issues and areas on a cyclical basis.
Our most recent PSHCE Day took place on Tuesday and was a
great success, with sessions on careers, drugs and lifestyle, 6th
Form taster sessions, university options and more. Feedback from
students and providers has been excellent and a flavour of the
day can be seen in these photos.

RAG – Raising
And Giving
Each year, Southborough
Sixth Formers organise a weeklong
series of fun-based activities
and events around the school ,
including cake sales, fancy dress
fun runs, talent contests, competitions
and shows, all designed to
engage and unite students, staff
and parents in doing something
wonderful and worthwhile together.
Indeed, the entire Southborough
community are encouraged
to get involved -and for
those of you who have been at
this school for at least a year or
so, you’ll no doubt remember the
fun everyone has!
However, whilst a lot of funpacked
activities take place, the
underlying purpose of RAG WEEK
is fundamentally one of DOING
GOOD , THINKING OF OTHERS
and RAISING AS MUCH MONEY
as possible for CHARITY. Over the
last few years, we have raised
literally thousands of pounds for
charities including The Children’s
Trust, Tadworth, Cecily’s Fund
(an orphanage) , The British
Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer
Awareness, Star Throwers Hospice,
Barnardos and Ronald Mcdonald
House Charities.
This year, we want to raise
more money than ever before –
and your support would make a
real difference!

It’s that time of year again, when anyone and
everyone in school gets the opportunity to audition
for our amazing Talent Show, The S Factor!
You can sing, dance, tell jokes, perform
magic, do karate. In fact whatever your special
talent we would love you to audition and maybe
earn yourself a place in the Grand Final on
Wednesday afternoon, March 23rd in the Hall.
All auditions will be filmed and an edited audition
video will be played at the Grand Final!
Fantastic prizes to be won for those in 1st,
2nd and 3rd place.

Year 11 Football
Southborough 4 – 0
Coombe Boys
A great perfromance from the
Year 11 football team saw them
beat Coombe Boys’ School 4-0.
A solid performance from the
boys in which they were comfortable
throughout and could
have perhaps scored a few
more. Pavithan Srikaran got the
team off to a great start with an
early goal. Further goals from
Tyrell Muchina and Daniel Leitao
gave Southborough a comfortable
victory. Well done to
the Year 11’s.

enjoyable day out at Emmanuel
College on Wed 9th March. Despite
a very early start, the boys
were fully engaged in a number
of activities throughout the day

when leaving kit / clothes in the
PE changing rooms that they
hand in any valuable items to a
member of staff. These valuable
items can then be locked in the PE
office. The changing rooms will be
locked whenever possible however
it is not possible to have them
locked all of the time. Do not take

example to the other schools

started last Monday. Maaz and
Michael from 12NCO invited all
year 7's to come and explore the
NEW year 7 science club which
is on every Monday in room A10.
They discovered the wonders of
elephant toothpaste: an amazing
chemical reaction where a
foam-like substance shoots out
from a container!
If you're interested in science,
or just want to see
some cool things happen, come
over to A10, every Monday, after
school.

Livingston Parabakaram
This week's nomination goes to Livingston Parabakaram to
recognise the commitment he has shown in improving his
attendance and general attitude to learning in all of his
lessons. Livingston has shown a great deal of positivity this
term, and has been a good role model for others.

An enormously controversial
book since its publication in
1971, Bury My Heart
at Wounded Knee
by Dee Brown is
recognised as one of
the most sweeping,
comprehensive books
that tells the story
of the systematic
destruction of
American Indians in
the latter half of the
nineteenth century. Brown’s
book is one of those unique
publications that changes
the way people perceive the
subject forever. Brown uses
a range of sources to tell the
story of the great chiefs and
warriors of the Dakota, Ute,
Sioux Cheyenne and
many other tribes.
Their accounts tell of
the battles, massacres,
and broken treaties
that left the American
Indian tribes defeated,
demoralised and
decimated. Bury My
Heart at Wounded Knee
will forever change
your perception of how the
West was won by the United
States at the expense of the
indigenous peoples that had
lived there for centuries.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
In a week that has seen International Women's Day, let us consider the words of Emmeline
Pankhurst, a suffragette who helped secure votes for women.
"Men make the moral code and they expect women to accept it.
They have decided that it is entirely right and proper for men to
fight for their liberties and their rights, but that it is not right and
proper for women to fight for theirs."
The vote was extended to women over 30 (if they or their husbands occupied premises of a
certain value) in 1918, and then to all women over 21 in 1928.
Unfortunately, Emmeline did not live to see the change her campaign helped to generate. She
died a few weeks before legislation was changed, aged 69, on 14 June 1928.
