ABOUT YHAI
Youth Hostel Movement
YHA is a membership-based, not-for-
profit association, with all profits going
back into the hostels and the
experience they provide. The first
hostel came into existence in
Germany in 1912 when a school
CHAIRMAN'S VIEW
teacher, Richard Schirrmann, had the
idea to create a network of budget
accommodation options across the
country to be used by school groups
and independent travellers. The
movement spread and gradually the
International Youth Hostel Federation,
now known as Hostelling International
(HI), was established in 1932.
Each year, more than 35 million
overnights are spent in Hostelling
International hostels around the
world. Through YHA, people are able
to explore new places, understand
different cultures, languages and
landscapes, and forge lifelong
friendships.
Youth Hostels Association of India
(YHAI)
YHAI is a part of the world's largest
budget accommodation network,
Hostelling International (HI), providing
more than 4,500 YHA hostels in over
First of all, I would like to congratulate all State Branches, Units, volunteers and
staff of YHAI and NYHT for celebrating the Centenary Celebration of Youth
Hostelling International and 60th Anniversary of YHA of India successfully this
year.
From Hostelling point of view 2009 was a very good year for us. We met the vast
majority of our targets and made progress in many important areas. This year,
we organized special programmes under Centenary Celebration of Youth
Hostelling International and 60th Anniversary of YHA of India such as, National
Mountain Biking Expedition from Kullu-Manali to Khardungla (highest motorable
road of the world), National Motor Bike Expedition, Delhi to Khardungla (highest
motorable road of the world), National Camel Cart Expedition, National
Elephant Trekking Expedition, National Boat Cruising and Trekking Expedition
and Keep Rohtang Pass Clean programme which had great impact on the society.
The aim of these programmes was to Promote Peace and International Understanding.
We would like to highlight the rare gesture from Hostelling International/ International Youth Hostel Federation
whose President, Mrs. Edith Arnoult-Brill, visited the participants of the National Motor Biking Expedition – 2009
and National Mountain Biking Expedition – 2009 at Leh, Ladakh and wished them the success in
undertaking such an arduous Expedition.
I feel confident that YHAI is standing strong to meet future challenges and I look forward to organize such more
expeditions in coming year and to welcome many new guests and members to our fantastic network of hostels.
Chief Executive Officer's Report
DEAR FRIENDS
I take this opportunity to congratulate Dr.
Harish K. Saxena on being elected as the
Chairman of the National Youth Hostel
Trust. He was elected to the position on 20
February 2010. Prior to his appointment,
he served as the Chairman of Hostel
Management Committee and under his
guidance the hostel witnessed an
impressive improvement in services and
amenities. He followed in the footsteps of
other luminaries including:
1. Dr. A.N. Jha, Ex-Lt. Governor of
Delhi
2. Shri Baleshwar Prasad, Ex-Lt.
Governor of Delhi
3. Shri Krishan Chand, Ex- Lt. Governor
of Delhi
4. Shri Dharma Vira, ICS (Retd)
5. Maj. Gen. Virendra Singh (Retd.)
The Youth Hostel movement traces its
roots to the year 1909 when a German
school teacher Richard Schirrmann,
founded the first youth hostel with a vision
to provide suitable accommodation where
young people of all countries could stay,
meet, come together and make lifelong
friendships. In 2009, Hostelling
International completed hundred years of
its existence. YHAI, which completed its
60th year, marked the occasion by holding
special programmes at the state and
national level.
The year 2009 was a successful and
rewarding one for YHAI, as the figures
below will show.
Efforts to drive more traffic to the YHAI
website, which was launched in 2005,
bore fruits. This year, the website saw an
impressive increase in booking for the
hostels and trekking programmes. We
continue to invest in updating our website
with current information for the benefit of
5
the visitors. The navigation has been
updated to make it more user-friendly so
that people can access information with
greater ease. We are now offering more
than fifteen modes of online payment
including debit card, credit card, cash
card, and net banking.
Over the years, YHAI has witnessed a
steady growth in revenues and bookings.
The online booking figure was Rs.
15430464(approx.) from 5 April 2005 to 31
October 2008, while the transaction for the
period 1 November 2008 to 31 October
2009 amounted to Rs. 10105405.
We were requested by the Ministry of
Youth Affairs and Sports to evaluate the
facilities of the Government Youth Hostels
(GYH) to verify if they were adhering to the
set guidelines. We evaluated the GYH
across the country through Mystery
Shopping and submitted the report to the
Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports,
Department of Youth Affairs. A copy of the
report can be found on the department's
website, www.yas.nic.in.
I am confident that YHAI will continue to
grow in strength in the coming years. I look
forward to welcoming many more guests
and members to our association.
TREKKING
For the past forty years, YHAI has been
successfully organising exciting adventure
tours across the country. Real adventures,
real people, real savings – that is the idea
behind our tours that span the peaks of the
mighty Himalayas, the arid regions of Thar
Desert, the dense forests of the Vindhyas,
and the pristine beauty of the beaches of
Goa.
These tours are not only a source of joy and
thrill to participants, but also provide a
valuable opportunity for them to test their
abilities and skills in challenging, and
sometimes, treacherous environs.
YHAI adventure programmes kick-started in
1970 with an initial participation of about 200
people. In 2009, more than 7000 members
participated in the programmes over a period
of six weeks from April to May and another
4000 during the rest of the year.
Most of the flagship adventure programmes
are organised in the Himalayas in the Kullu
Manali region of the north Indian state of
Himachal Pradesh. These tours include
National Himalayan Trekking Expeditions
(NHTE) – Sar Pass, Saurkundi Pass, Nature
Study Dobhi, Nature Study Dalhousie,
Mountain Biking Jalori Pass, and Family
Camping at Seobagh, Kullu. These
expeditions allow participants to feel the
rhythms of Himalayan life, get closer to the
high peaks, and learn about the ethnic
culture and socio economic life of the locals.
Special casual leave up to 30 days was
granted to central government employees
and UP state employees for participating in
YHAI Trekking Expeditions.
Overview of Summer Programmes 2009
1. Of the 269 people who participated in the
Har-ki-Doon trek, 123 had to be diverted
towards Sar Pass and Saurkundi Pass route.
The refund cheques were dispatched to 146
participants.
2. This year, YHAI provided foam mattresses
and new bed sheets in the family camping
sites.
3. In a tragic turn of events, two women
participants from Mumbai lost their lives to
adverse weather conditions in the Sar Pass
area. We extend our heartfelt condolences to
their bereaved families.
4. Another unfortunate incident took place at
Saurkundi Pass route when a group of
participants misbehaved with the guide and
