We are going to begin a new series of articles on our church Leadership and the staff at St. Paul’s. We are hoping
to give our members an opportunity to get to know the people who have been hired or elected to help St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church and School to SOAR! We continue our series by getting to know St. Paul’s support Staff!
Ms. Carol Tye
Mrs. Kim Waggy
Getting to Know You
Carol Tye is the business administrator at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School. Carol
has two sons Richard, 25 and Maxwell, 14. Carol also has a lot of family in Cheney including
aunts, uncles and cousins. Carol grew up in Colby, Kansas and attended Colby Public Schools.
She spent her summers in Cheney at her Grandmother Luckey Harding's house. St. Paul's
became her church home when she joined in November 2010. She enjoys the dinners at St.
Paul's and getting to meet with family and friends.
Carol enjoys reading and writes a little as well. She also enjoys bicycling, but the heat of
the past summer slowed her down a bit. She claims that her family tends to be a little off
the beaten path, but that people quickly finding that out about them. Her family also enjoys
traditions that the holidays bring.
Carol’s favorite bible verse is “All the Paths of the Lord are Steadfast love and Faithfulness
for Those Who Keep His Covenant and His Testimonies.” Psalm 25:10
Kim Waggy is St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School secretary. She has worked for
the church since December of 1999. Kim was born and raised in Cheney. She was baptized
and confirmed at St. Paul’s. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from
Cheney High School. Kim is married to Jeff Waggy and they have two son’s Logan, 23 and
Jeremy, 20. Logan attends Concordia University at Seward, NE., where he is majoring in
secondary education. Jeremy graduated from Cheney High School last year and works at
th
the Dillons grocery store at 135 & Maple in Wichita.
Jeff & Kim moved into there dream home in February and haven’t gotten to far from
home since then. They enjoy watching the wildlife (deer, pheasant, and a bobcat!) from
their back deck. They have also been trying to establish a yard during one of the hottest
summers ever!
Jeff & Kim are now members at Ascension Lutheran Church, but still strongly support St. Paul’s Lutheran
School and the church as well. Kim will always have a soft spot for the school, her boys were the fourth generation
in her family to graduate from St. Paul’s. She also feels that the teachers and staff helped establish a firm bond with
Christ for her sons. She will never forget how they taught her boys about prayer, Christ’s death and resurrection,
and how much God loves them, during a time when she couldn’t. There is truly no price to great to pay to save
someone’s soul, and share with them the gift that God has given us. As Kim’s favorite bible verse says, “Go
therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am
w ith you alw ays, to the end of the Age.” M atthew 28:19-20.
Mrs. Janet Riepe
“Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs
the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, w hoever does not receive the kingdom
of God like a child shall not enter it.” Luke 19:16-17
My name is Janet Riepe, but at In His Hands Preschool/Daycare I am “Miss Janet”.
This is my third year at In His Hands. I first put on my chef’s hat to make lunch for the
preschool kids that stay for the afternoon session. After lunch, I change my hat and
become the Childcare Supervisor for the remainder of the day. In addition to lunch, I try
to work in some fun things like “Try it Tuesday” where the kids are encouraged to try
different foods that they probably wouldn’t otherwise. I also work in special snacks that
the kids get to help prepare, like cut out sugar cookies. I have truly enjoyed working with
the kids and especially love their hugs and the joy that I feel when working with them. I
am married to Doug Riepe and have bragging rights to three kids; Jennifer, Kirk and Evan.
When I am not at In His Hands , I enjoy attending Bible Study, Bowling League, and
working outside in my flower gardens.
Mrs. Laura Keefe
Hello! My name is Laura Keefe and I work part-time at St. Paul’s Lutheran School as
a teacher’s aide in the kindergarten/first grade classroom. I am also a temporary dental
hygienist for several offices in Wichita and Hutchinson. My husband Gregg is a mechanical
engineer at Cessna. We have three sons: Ian is a sophomore at Wichita State University
where he is studying mechanical engineering, Garrett is a junior at Cheney High School, and
th
Conner is an 8 grader at Cheney Middle School. Our family belongs to Cheney United
Methodist church.
I have a 27 year old quarter horse named Wiley that is a delight to ride. Our indoor
pet (Brick) is a funny-looking little dog that we got from the humane society last year, and we
all adore him.
Gregg and the three boys are big sports fans. (Go K-State!) And participate themselves
in several sports, mostly golf, football and basketball. We also enjoy a good movie and pizza
at home most Saturday nights.
you how to best serve Him and be a good steward of your time with your family and your volunteering.
Adventures on Promise Island Sunday School!
“I CARE ABOUT YOU” was the promise for October’s Sunday School Classes.
The children learned 1 Peter 5:7 - “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for
you.” The younger children wrapped Brenna and Jared in toilet paper and then
heard the story of Jesus cared about Lazarus, Mary and Martha. The month ended
with the children making beaded bracelets for the Beading to Beat Autism
Foundation.
In November and December, we will be focusing on the promise of a Savior!
Stewardship
Applying Biblical Teachings
“So I say to you: Ask and it w ill be given to you; seek and you w ill find; knock and the door
w ill be opened to you” (Luke 11:9).
If the question, “Why do I not have?” is raised, the answer that must be given is, “Because you have
not asked.” God commands us to ask. When we ask for something in prayer, according to His will, He will
give it to us. That is His promise. The Apostle Paul wrote, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him
up for us all — how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).
In his epistle, James powerfully captures what happens when self interest and selfishness
overshadow our Christian living and a proper and diligent prayer life is not maintained. “What causes fights
and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something
but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not
have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong
motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that
friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes
an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us
envies intensely? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but gives
grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come
near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you
double-minded” (James 4:1-8).
One cannot separate the true Christian life, that of glorifying God and the giving of loving service
to those around us, from prayer. If one were to view the heartbeat of the Christian life as the Holy Spirit
working through Word and Sacrament, then most definitely, prayer would have to be the pulse. One cannot
emphasize enough that prayer is a vital part of Christian life.
It is sad that we often relinquish ourselves and our church to the poverty of being without God’s full
measure of power, riches, wisdom and strength simply because we fail to diligently ask in Christ’s name.
We are to take everything to God in prayer. First, we confess our sins and plead for forgiveness for
Christ’s sake. Then, in Christ, we pray for power to overcome sin and the fury of Satan as we go about His
work. In Christ, we pray for the financial resources we need to carry out His work and to provide for our
earthly needs. In Christ, we pray for wisdom to properly use all that He has given us. In Christ, we pray
for strength to do all things according to His will. When we pray diligently in faith, God answers and brings
our will into conformity with His will.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God” (Phil. 4:6).
Member Spotlight
Loren & Lou Schomacker
Loren and Mary Lou (Lou) Schomacker are our members of the month. They have 3 daughters. Angela Williams (43)
and her husband Mike live in Marysville, Kansas. They have 4 children; Madison (16), Avery (12), and twin boys Rhett and Rook
(7). Malissa (40) has Down’s Syndrome and lives in Northwest Wichita in a group home with 3 other girls. She works at the
Goodwill Industries Plant in Northeast Wichita. Jennifer Wilson (36) has a son, Gage and they live in Hesston.
Loren grew up on a farm west of Cheney and attended his first 4 years of school at Murdock Elementary. Grades 5-8
he attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School on the hill. He attended Cheney High School and graduated in 1958. After graduation,
he attended Wichita State University on a football scholarship. Lou grew up in Monchester, Oklahoma on a farm her Grandpa
Feist homesteaded. She attended Monchester school through her junior year when the high school closed. She graduated from
Wakita High School. Loren and Lou were married in Wakita, Oklahoma in 1966. After living in Wichita for 2 years, they bought
their first home in Goddard, Kansas where they lived for 8 years. Loren was a member at Ascension Lutheran Church which is
where their 2 oldest girls were baptized. In 1975 they built their home Northwest of Cheney where they presently reside. Loren
and the girls became members of St. Paul’s when they moved to Cheney and Lou joined in 1978. Angela and Jennifer attended
St. Paul’s Lutheran School and Garden Plain High School. They felt it was very important their girls received a Christian education.
Malissa was bused to many different schools in the Special Education Co-op. Malissa’s best achievement was being confirmed
by Pastor Kaufmann and being questioned one on one in front of the congregation.
Loren has been retired from Garden Plain High School since 1995 where he taught and coached for 28 years. He began
his teaching and coaching career at Norwich High School from 1964-1967. Lou went to Beauty College in Wichita and worked
in a salon until they started their family. With God’s blessing, she was able to stay home and care for their family. She became
involved with special education and served on the Sedgwick County Special Education Advisory Council Board.
Loren enjoys singing in the choir and building faith chests for baptized infants. He enjoys gardening and building projects. Lou
enjoys the Tuesday Turtles bible study group and every committee she has served on. They both enjoy their grandchildren,
spending time watching them in sports and other activities and they both enjoy sporting events. Lou enjoys working in her flower
garden and reading. Their favorite bible verse is Matthew 19:26b – “With God all things are possible.”
During Loren’s college years, he had the opportunity to participate in the Sun Bowl game in 1961 for WSU and played
with some talented athletes including Bill Parcells (who was coach for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants). Lou coached
Special Olympics track and field for most of the years Malissa was in school. One year she had the opportunity to take a
basketball team to Hays, Kansas for the State Special Olympics tournament. Their team all won a gold metal. This was a very
special moment in her life.
They have a family tradition that takes place the Saturday before Easter. Lou’s 4 sisters and families and her 2 brothers
and families all come together at the family farm in Oklahoma for the day. They have 60 family members in all and they have
a great time.
Member News
Bible Study Group Stands the Tests of Time
In the fall of 1992 St. Paul’s began a series of Caring and Sharing Bible Studies attempting to involve all our members in
monthly gatherings. Each group had about 10 people assigned. One of the groups was to meet with a couple living in Norwich.
Most of the folks put in the group were from that area. Several couples from Cheney went, even though that was not their
group, because they suspected the attendance might be poor. About 10 attended that first meeting. By the grace of God, six
of those original people are still meeting 20 years later.
The members just clicked from the beginning. The attendance has been remarkable. We have gone through trials and
triumphs, births and deaths, illness and healing, and joys and sorrows together. We have studied the Word from about every
direction and topic, and we have shared and cared for each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. One of our best bonding
actions is letting each member share something on a suggested subject each time. We use Christ-care prayer often. Hugs are
the order of the day!
Another couple joined us about 10 years ago. They have moved about 3 hours away, because of a job, but they continue
to meet with us every month. Another newer couple is serving in the Kansas Senate, but they nearly always manage to come
also. A widowed retiree is our newest member to round out the group. We are all into the grand parenting or beyond stage.
From the beginning we have met in each others homes. We look forward to the dessert that each hostess serves. For a
number of years we met on Sunday nights, always setting the next date at the present meeting. Now we go for whatever time,
even afternoons sometimes, that all can make it. It is a priority for all of us. Several times a year we share a pot luck meal
before the lesson. At first whoever was the host also led. Now we have a gifted, willing volunteer who has been guiding the
study for several years.
We have always contributed something each time. Presently, it is 5$ a couple. That money is donated to a worthy cause
every Christmas. When an original member died, the group made a memorial gift to the church in his name. We recently lost
another member and we will repeat the memorial. A special twenty year Thanksgiving gift and celebration is also in the
planning stage.
It would be an impossible task to name all the blessings that have come from this 20 year association. We have all grown
in Christ and in our love and concern for each other. Recognizing spiritual growth in oneself and in friends is wonderfully
gratifying. It has surely proven the passage: “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” Matt.
