March 20, 2011 Second Sunday of Lent: St. Gregory of Palamas
COMMEMORATIONS OF THE DAY: Fathers of the monastery of St. Savas;
Cuthbert the Wonderworker; Photina, the Samaritan woman; Seven Virgin
Martyrs of Amisos; Niketas the Confessor; Martyrs Rodian, Akylas, Lollion, and
Emmanuel; Euphrosynus of Novgorod; Martin of Braga in Iberia; Austreigiselis,
Bishop of Bourges; Wulfram, missionary; Archil II, King of Georgia; Neomartyr
Myron of Crete. Through their intercessions, O Christ our God, have mercy on us
and save us.
RESURRECTION HYMN (Tone 2) (Liturgical Resource, Page 11)
When You descended to the realm of death You as life immortal, rendered to Hades a
mortal blow by Your all radiant divinity. And when You from infernal depths and the
darkness below did raise the dead, all the hosts of heaven’s powers did proclaim and
cry out: O life giving Christ and our God we give glory.
APOLYTIKION OF ST. GREGORY PALAMAS (Tone 8)
Beacon of Orthodox beliefs, the strong support of the Church and her teacher
inspired by God, you are the ornament of monks, the unassailable champion of
theologians, O Gregory the wonder-worker and the boast of Thessalonika, the
messenger of grace. Forever earnestly entreat for the salvation of our souls.
HYMN OF THE THREE HIERARCHS (Liturgical Resource, Pages 18, 19)
The three greatest luminaries of the Three-Sun Divinity, who with rays of dogmatic
teaching have set the universe a fire. The honey flowing rivers of wisdom who
have flooded all the creation with streams of divine knowledge. Basil the Great and
Gregory the Theologian, along with John the renowned, golden-mouth orator, all of
us admirers of their words, let us gather and with hymns honor them, for they to the
Trinity forever intercede for us.
KONTAKION OF THE AKATHIST HYMN (Tone 8)
To you as champion unto victory invincible, your city offers thanksgiving unto you.
From our trials Theotokos have you redeemed us, for as you possess invincible might
and power from all dangers Theotokos deliver us, as we cry unto you: Hail O Bride
unwedded.

• MeMoriaL For PennY PYLe Father George has scheduled a memorial for
his mother, Penny, on the 3rd of April at Prophet Elias in Dubuque. Dubuque
is a 4 hour drive from Champaign. The Divine Liturgy starts at 10 a.m. followed
by a Lenten reception. Because Dubuque is a great distance and Great Lent
can be a busy time, Father George and Valerie certainly understand if you and
your family are unable to attend. In that event, the Pyle family simply asks for
your prayers and a lighted candle at the parish where you will be worshipping
that day.
