Drive in at Mallow Golf Club
A great start was made by our captains and presidents
as they kick started their year with what was a most
enjoyable and eventful drive-in afternoon. Family
members and club members began to gather after
11am to cheer on Con O Flynn, Eileen Caplice,
Michael
O’Sullivan
& Anne O
Sullivan as
they made a
start to
their very
important
year. The
atmosphere
was buzzing in the clubhouse and car-park as people
gathered, sorted clubs and chatted in anticipation.
In a change to tradition, the drive in this year was
from the 18th tee. Extra pressure on our officers as
it would not suffice to just whack a ball out the first,
but, this year, they had a target!-a target that was
surrounded by many family, friends and potential
critics! Con began in great style, and to tremendous
applause, by placing his drive back right of the green.
Michael followed, and not wishing to out shine his
captain, left it short. Pressure now descended on Lady
Captain Eileen who, in keeping with her background
in squash & tennis
competitive action, got
inside capt Con with a
magnificent drive to the
centre of the green. Cries
of ‘go on the women’
reverberated from some
sections of the crowd as
Lady President Anne O
Sullivan drove off with
a secretly planted joke
ball which split in two
on impact! - an indication of things to come from our
Lady President. The ceremonials over, all members
playing travelled to their assigned holes to await
James Cotter’s shotgun start to herald a new and
much anticipated year in our great club’s future.
Cork County Council Shows
Large Scale Support for
Mallow Festival
Press Release compliments of SmackPR
Mallow’s Racing Home for Easter Festival has
received the biggest boost yet in the form of €15,000
worth of funding from Cork County Council’s
Economic Development Fund. The money is to be
spent on promoting the event locally and nationally.
Festival chairperson Mary Kelly is thrilled with the
news. “Cork County Council has always supported
the festival since it was a fledgling event, but as we are
now entering our 7th year, the potential it has to grow
and attract people to North Cork for an extended
length of time is really starting to show.
This funding means that Cork County Council want
to help us to spread the word as far and wide as we
can. We have always believed that the festival is a
massive opportunity to promote Mallow and over the
next few weeks wherever you look, the festival will be
everywhere, from buses and billboards, to local radio

and newspapers as well as our ever growing social
media following. It really is all about Mallow this
Easter”.
The Racing Home for Easter Festival is
all about encouraging those who grew up in the
Blackwater Valley region but who have since left,
to return home to Mallow and Cork for Easter
and enjoy all the activities and festivities the town
has to offer as well as encouraging local residents
and visiting tourists to participate and enjoy.
Cork County Council is pleased to support this
endeavour in any way possible”.
A selection of the crowd enjoying the
horse racing at Cork Racecourse during the Racing
Home For Easter Festival.
Commenting on the allocation of funding, Mayor
of County Cork Cllr John Paul O’ Shea said “The
festival, since its establishment in 2010 has provided
a much needed annual boost to the economy of
North Cork and the wider Blackwater Valley. This
funding
will be
used to
market
Mallow as
the place
to be this
Easter.
Cork County Council also facilitates weekend
activities in the grounds of Mallow Castle and is
delighted that such a local amenity can be used as a
focal point of the weekend’s activities. The Council’s
Economic Development Fund was initially set up by
our now County Manager, Tim Lucey and is ideally
situated to support festivals such as the Racing
Home for Easter Festival”.
inclusive with details of all the weekend’s events and
For generations of children in
the parish of Ballyclough the first
an indelible mark on the many
children who passed through her
hands. Her bubbly personality, wit and sense of
the many funnny incidents and stories of her pupils
was truly remarkable. Frances Murphy devoted her
Farmers Market by John O' Brien
Farming has changed in the last few
decades. The ending of the milk
quota brings challenges to modern
Irish farmers. The problems that the
environment presents to us will mean
further challenges to farming as well. Different
solutions have been given to the problems faced by
Irish farmers. Farmers seek government and EU
support through regulation changes. They also seek
to insure that CAP would continue to help family
farmers in the future.
There are other solutions as well. One
example of farmers helping themselves without aid
from others is the farmers market. Self help is a greater
guarantee for the farmers than relying on others. It
also empowers farmers as well. Another successful
example of farmers helping themselves is the Co
Op movement. The Co Op means that farmers can
control the production of their own products instead
of relying on others. The failure to develop beef
factories owned by farmers shows the value of Co Ops
for farmers.
Co Ops are large scale enterprises in the
main now. But there are other examples of small scale
self help movements. The
farmers market brings
farmers and other small
scale food producers
together who sell their
products to customers.
It helps local enterprise
and the local economy as
well. As an example you
might have organic farmers
growing their crops and selling them directly to
the customers. You could have a dairy farmer using
some of their milk to make hand crafted cheese. By
selling directly to customers the producers cut out
the middle person. The customer meets the producer
directly. Farmers market are a bottom up approach to
economic development.
Farmers markets have been in Ireland for
a while. I believe that there is a farmers market in
Dairygold Co Op superstore. You can check out the
web for information. I believe that farmers markets
can help in developing a self help mentality. It can be a
means of empowering both producers and consumers.
It can help local economies. With regular producers
and customers involved in farmers markets levels of
trust can grow.
By buying fresh products from the farm
costumers can know were their food comes from.
They don't need a regulator to tell them that their food
is safe. Questions about food isn't only a question of
cost. Yes cost is an important issue especially with
people struggling to make ends meet. There is also a
question of food security too. If a country depends
on imported food to survive could suffer during war

time. This issue would affect a country like Britain.
As Ireland is a high quality food exporter this issue
doesn't affect us as much. But to insure a country
has enough food to survive it needs a strong
domestic agricultural economy. Farmers need to
receive a fair price and customers needs to be able to
afford to pay for their food too.
Farmers markets protects small producers.
They insure that customers receive fresh and
varied products that are tasty too. They help in
the development of the local economy. They are
examples of self help in action.
Mayor O’ Shea with the speakers at today’s Cork -
China Business Forum.
Cork County Council is focused on highlighting
the economic development, education, tourism and
cultural exchange potential which exists between
Ireland and China and, specifically, between Cork
and Xuzhou. Situated in the northwest of Jiangsu
Province, almost midway between Beijing and
Shanghai, Xuzhou City is one of China’s most
influential transportation hubs. The city has a
bustling industrial, education and cultural heritage
with a population of approximately two million
people.
Following the signing of the Memorandum of
Understanding this morning, the President of Cork
Chamber, Barrie O’Connell will deliver an overview
of the local economy, followed by contributions
from locally-based experts in the areas of
Education, ICT, Food & Beverage, Pharmaceuticals
and Finance. Tim Lucey, Chief Executive of Cork
County Council will bring proceedings to a close

with a review of this morning’s seminar.
Developing a relationship with Jiangsu
Province in China is part of a South-West Regional
approach, which has Cork City Council building a
long-standing relationship with the Municipality of
Shanghai and Kerry County Council developing a
relationship with Zheijiang Province, situated to the
South of Jiangsu and Shanghai. Shanghai, Jiangsu
and Zheijiang represent the three most economically
Mallow to become first town in
Cork to offer free Wi-Fi
The North Cork town of Mallow is set to become the
first town in the County to offer free Wi-Fi.
This was the news from the recent Kanturk/Mallow
Municipal District
Meeting of Cork
County Council
where the members
were given an
update on placing
the free Wi-Fi
service in the town.
The FREE Wi-Fi
initiative which is a
partnership approach between Cork County Council
and CIT will be available to the general public on
a pilot basis from Market Square down to the new
Civic Plaza. Free access will be for 60m minutes.
Welcoming the commencement of this pilot project,
Mayor of the County of Cork & member of the
Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District Cllr. John Paul
O’ Shea said “I believe that complimentary Wi-Fi has
become an essential service for tourists and shoppers
alike and I am
delighted the IT
Department of
Cork County
Council and
CIT has come
on board to
assist the town
of Mallow in
improving what
it has to offer as one of the largest towns in Cork. It is
important for Mallow to be the first in County Cork
to offer this service and we will be following similar
towns such as tourist haven, Killarney in County
Kerry and Drogheda, County Louth who have
already provided complimentary Wi-Fi in their towns
over the last few years”.
Cllr. O’ Shea added “Smart phone usage is
on the increase as is web surfing, social media and
working remotely for business people so anything
that the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District can do
to support this, we should assist with it. Towns like
Mallow need rejuvenating and I strongly believe by
offering services like complimentary Wi-Fi is one way
of helping this process and will encourage shoppers
and tourists alike to come to Mallow and enjoy all
what it has to offer”.
