staff AWARDs night
and the winners are...

ecognising the important
role that staff play in delivering
services to patients
and celebrating the many
achievements of the UL Hospital Group
was the aim of the inaugural staff recognition
awards.
Staff were recognised across eight
different categories: Exceptional Patient
Experience, Innovation in a Clinical Area,
Innovation in a Non-Clinical Setting, Education
and Training, Research, Best Team,
Quality Improvement and Unsung Hero.
The awards were held recently at the
Strand Hotel, Limerick and hosted by 2FM
DJ Will Leahy.
In total, over 50 nominations were received
and a panel of independent judges
reviewed each nomination before deciding
on the overall winners for each category.
Each winner was presented with a
framed certificate and trophy by Colette
Cowan, CEO UL Hospitals Group, who
said she was delighted to see the calibre
of people, teams and projects that were
shortlisted for the awards.
“Recognising the great work that staff
do across the Group in all our hospitals is
very important for the ongoing development
and improvement of services for our
patients. The level of ingenuity, care and
passion that is demonstrated by staff is on
a par with any other Hospital Group in the
country,” she said.
The winners for each category were:

• Education and Training – Carol Cotter
for the roll out of Staff Training Matrix introduced
into ward 3D, University Hospital

• Research - Mr Paul Burke, Vascular

• Best Team – Perioperative Directorate

Speaking after receiving her award for
Exceptional Patient Experience, Maria
Keane, Manager Cancer Information Centre,
University Hospital Limerick said, “I
was overwhelmed at being nominated and
delighted to be chosen as a representative
of the cancer services team for this award.
I am thrilled as I feel it endorses everything
we do here at the centre. The clinical
area of the service is vital but I feel the
services we offer compliment a patient’s
overall experience.
“Patients have shared that the activities
or services they take part in help in their
recovery and in getting their confidence
