As we proceed through our Lenten journey, let’s keep
our thoughts on the life & sacrifice of Jesus for the
world to rise again on Easter Sunday!
Friend & PE&D writer Lauree Carlsen & I visited Duff’s
Garage recently for the fabulous Wednesday jam. Drummer
Ed Jordan, Cactus Davis on keys, guitarist Wynn
Alexander & Robert Ellison on bass started the session
in grand style. Tunes by the Stray Cats, Lou Reed, The
Beatles & more were included in the opening set. Especially
noteworthy was Wynn’s version of Here Comes
the Sun. Wynn has formed a new band called The Living
Souls; watch for more on this talented young artist
in the near future. Local legend Elvis Nagel was on
hand with his tribute to Elvis, bringing his whole band
to the stage. He was decked out in bright orange, one
of his many authentic Elvis outfits. Long-time artist
Asher Wood joined Wynn on guitar, while Brian Redine
manned the bass; Ed played drums in flamboyant style,
while Cactus performed his usual magic on keys. The
crowd was delighted with tunes like That’s All Right,
Burnin’ Love, Never Been to Spain, Feels So Good,
Johnny B Good & more! It was like a concert with a real
Elvis performance! Many other musicians too numerous
to mention took a turn on stage & they didn’t disappoint.
Be sure to visit Duff’s next time you’re out on a Wednesday;
Wynn runs the jam very efficiently!
Guitarist/songwriter & vocalist David Currey sent me
a copy of his latest single Long Black Veil, originally
sung by Johnny Cash in 1959. It’s a heartfelt rendition
of the song written by Marijohn Wilkin and Danny Bill &
is available on CD Baby. David is performing at the open
mike at 9 pm every Thursday at The Skyroom on Hwy 26
in Zig Zag. Watch for article next issue.
The Doobie Decibel System duo also sent me a copy
of their new CD of the same name, Doobie Decibel
System. The guitar duo consists of Roger McNamee (of
Moonalice fame) and Jason Crosby, who has played in a
number of bands with such notables as Bob Weir,
Carlos Santana, Pete Seeger, Eric Clapton, Bruce
Springsteen & more. Roger performs in more than 100
shows a year with Moonalice (lead vocalist, bass & guitar).
The CD is a refreshing compilation of cover tunes &
a couple of entertaining originals, namely Wrong Side of
the Road (by Jason) & Couple of Puffs (by Roger). Their
harmony is exceptional & lyrics easy to understand. Of
their covers, I particularly enjoy Clapton’s Bell Bottom
Blues & Lennon & McCartney’s Things We Said Today.
To hear many of the tunes, just Google Moonalice for
an extensive look at past performances. The good news
is the group is coming back to Portland in April, date &
place to-be-announced. Watch next issue!

local musician Dave Kahl’s wife
Lynn at The Rose Room Bar &

Portland musician David Kahl
is a respected bassist who has
worked with many top local blues
artists, including Lloyd Jones, Ty
Curtis, and the late Paul deLay.
When not playing, David is a
caregiver to his wife Lynn, who
has advanced mulitple sclerosis.
Four years ago, the Kahls lost
their home and now reside with
Dave’s mother. Lynn’s condition
has since deteriorated and she
has become bedridden.
“A Life for Lynn” is a benefi t
event for the Kahls that will help
raise funds for the care, equipment
and housing that Lynn desperately
needs. Proceeds from the benefi t
will go towards the Lynn Kahl Special
Needs Trust, with a portion of
the funds to benefi t the MS Society
of Portland, Oregon.
“A Life For Lynn” will feature an
all-star musical line up including:

Louis “King Louie” Pain with Brian
