...from the editor
As we proceed through our Lenten journey, let’s keep
our thoughts on the life & sacrifice of Jesus for the
world to rise again on Easter Sunday!
Friend & PE&D writer Lauree Carlsen & I visited Duff’s
Garage recently for the fabulous Wednesday jam. Drummer
Ed Jordan, Cactus Davis on keys, guitarist Wynn
Alexander & Robert Ellison on bass started the session
in grand style. Tunes by the Stray Cats, Lou Reed, The
Beatles & more were included in the opening set. Especially
noteworthy was Wynn’s version of Here Comes
the Sun. Wynn has formed a new band called The Living
Souls; watch for more on this talented young artist
in the near future. Local legend Elvis Nagel was on
hand with his tribute to Elvis, bringing his whole band
to the stage. He was decked out in bright orange, one
of his many authentic Elvis outfits. Long-time artist
Asher Wood joined Wynn on guitar, while Brian Redine
manned the bass; Ed played drums in flamboyant style,
while Cactus performed his usual magic on keys. The
crowd was delighted with tunes like That’s All Right,
Burnin’ Love, Never Been to Spain, Feels So Good,
Johnny B Good & more! It was like a concert with a real
Elvis performance! Many other musicians too numerous
to mention took a turn on stage & they didn’t disappoint.
Be sure to visit Duff’s next time you’re out on a Wednesday;
Wynn runs the jam very efficiently!
Guitarist/songwriter & vocalist David Currey sent me
a copy of his latest single Long Black Veil, originally
sung by Johnny Cash in 1959. It’s a heartfelt rendition
of the song written by Marijohn Wilkin and Danny Bill &
is available on CD Baby. David is performing at the open
mike at 9 pm every Thursday at The Skyroom on Hwy 26
in Zig Zag. Watch for article next issue.
The Doobie Decibel System duo also sent me a copy
of their new CD of the same name, Doobie Decibel
System. The guitar duo consists of Roger McNamee (of
Moonalice fame) and Jason Crosby, who has played in a
number of bands with such notables as Bob Weir,
Carlos Santana, Pete Seeger, Eric Clapton, Bruce
Springsteen & more. Roger performs in more than 100
shows a year with Moonalice (lead vocalist, bass & guitar).
The CD is a refreshing compilation of cover tunes &
a couple of entertaining originals, namely Wrong Side of
the Road (by Jason) & Couple of Puffs (by Roger). Their
harmony is exceptional & lyrics easy to understand. Of
their covers, I particularly enjoy Clapton’s Bell Bottom
Blues & Lennon & McCartney’s Things We Said Today.
To hear many of the tunes, just Google Moonalice for
an extensive look at past performances. The good news
is the group is coming back to Portland in April, date &
place to-be-announced. Watch next issue!
‘Til next time, pray for peace & prosperity.......................Bonnie Carter, ed
There are plenty of cover bands
in the Portland area. There’s
Counterfeit Cash, The Styxperience
and more than a feeling that
you have all been to a cover band
show. So, it’s legitimate to ask
“What makes Nobody’s Sweetheart
stand apart?” Well, to answer
such a question, one must
just go to one of their shows and
This story takes us to Hillsboro
to a small pub called Coyote’s.
Sorry to disappoint, but it’s not
Coyote Ugly. The establishment is
newer and seems to be a hit with
the locals. The place is fi lled to the
brim with people and there isn’t
anywhere to sit because everyone
goes to this brother’s show!
As you sit and wait kindly, you
know they are rolling up the
screen where everyone was
watching the Blazers’ game. As
it rises, you will notice a mike
stand and a drum set, where
the band will set up. There is a
tune playing in the background
to fi ll the void between the
game and the show to come.
Finally, your burger and beer
arrives. You turn your head to
the side and try to glimpse the
stage, but it’s no use. You are
going to have to get up, so you
scarf that burger and wash it
back with that ice cold PBR. Before
you do though, drums begin
to clash and a familiar guitar
rift begins. Immediately, it’s like
you are transported back to
the ‘80s and Chrissie Hynde is
singing Middle of the Road. Oh
wait, that’s not The Pretenders’
There are people of all ages out
there! Some patrons have even
propped open the door so they
can have a smoke and listen to
the music at the same time.
The first two songs of the night
are from the ‘80s and there
are still some younger people
seated in the crowd. The band
begins to play Ex’s and Oh’s by
Elle King. Now everyone is on
the floor and the place will not
sit for the rest of the night.
Though the band’s line-up
changed throughout the years,
Nobody’s Sweetheart has a
solid group of great artists. Current
line-up is Michelle Kuepker
(lead vocals); Hal Logon (lead
vocals / drums); Michael Radi
(keyboards, guitar and vocals),
Joe Rutledge (lead guitar /
members are seasoned entertainers,
Winter Blues
Festival boasts international touch
It doesn’t have to be the
summer festival season to
see some of the best live
music around the nation. The
Winter Blues Festival, March
12, solves that long wait for
summer by bringing top national
blues acts from the big
festival stages and into Portland’s
own backyard for a day
of music and charity.
An idea with humble beginnings
over a conversation at
the kitchen table to counteract
the dreary days of winter with
music, while giving back to
charity, is now in its fifth year
and has become the most
popular blues music event
outside of summer.
The lineup for this year’s
WBF reads like the who’s who
of the blues locally and nationally.
Headliner is the popular
Candye Kane. Robin Barrett &
Coyote Kings with Tiph Dames
has been setting the northwest
on fire with an award-nominated
CD and their brand of blues
rock. Their lineup includes
musicians that have recorded
and performed for international
audiences. The Jim Mesi Band
is an infamous staple of the
Portland blues world, highlighting
the guitar talents of multiaward
winning Jim Mesi, who
was inducted into the Oregon
Hall of Fame. 2015 Muddy
Award winner for “Best Female
Vocalist,” Rae Gordon brings
her brand of blues to the WBF
with special guest Big Monti
on guitar. Local artist Amber
Sweeny is known for a voice
that is soulful, but warm and
gritty at just the right time.
The Winter Blues Music Festival
is excited to have again
a special set from United By
Music North America. It’s a
performance-based entertainment
group that started in
the Netherlands for musically
talented people who have
developmental delays and
intellectual challenges. Also
slated is their group of mentors,
including national recording
artists that help mentor
children and young adults with
disabilities, who are musically
inclined. They help set up situations
where they can perform
in front of an audience.
The WBF has enjoyed support
from the local business
and music communities and
has found a home base at
the Milwaukie Elks Lodge &
Ballroom. The event venue
offers two stages, large
dance floors, a full service
bar and food menu, on-site
parking and across the street
from the new MAX Orange
line and bus stops.
The Winter Blues Festival
has helped many charities
throughout the years including
C.H.A.P. (Children’s Healing
Arts Project), the Oregon Food
Bank and United By Music
North America and this year
will be no exception in giving
back through music.
For those attending the festival
from out of town, there are
a number of lodging opportunities
nearby, including the
Milwaukie Inn, Econo Lodge
and Kings Row in Milwaukie,
Best Western Rivershore in
Billy Webb Elks Lodge boasts rich
history since ‘20s, provides music
Courtesy Alder, LLC
The Billy Webb Elks Lodge,
a modest, shingle-sided building
located at 6 North Tillamook
Street in Portland, is a
reminder of the city’s largely
segregated history and is a
key historical landmark for the
African American community.
Designed by the Portland
architectural fi rm of DeYoung
and Roald, the structure
was completed in 1926 as
a project of the Portland
YWCA. The building replaced
a temporary structure that
since 1921 had housed the
YWCA’s first effort to reach
out to Portland’s small African
American community. During
the 1920s, “membership
refl ected segregated housing
in the city, with separate
clubs for African-American,
Japanese, Chinese, and native/foreign-born
white girls.”
People referred to it as the
“Williams Avenue branch” or
the “Colored YWCA.”
Facilities included a gymnasium,
auditorium, stage,
lounge, and locker rooms
for both boys and girls. Activities
for both sexes were
programmed in coordination
with African American
church congregations in the
neighborhood.
In 1942, the YWCA allowed
the building to be used by the
United Service Organizations
(USO) as a music and recreation
site for minority soldiers
in Portland. It was returned to
YWCA use in 1947. Following
the Vanport flood in 1948, which
wiped out housing for many
African Americans who come
to Portland during the war,
the building served as a Red
Cross emergency center and
clearinghouse where relatives
separated by the flood could be
reunited with their families.
During the 1950s, in addition to
housing YWCA activities, many
groups used the building for
meetings, including the National
Association for the Advancement
of Colored People, the
Oregon Association of Colored
Women, the Urban League, and
the Congress of Racial Equality.
After passage of the Oregon
Public Accommodations Law in
1953—which outlawed racial discrimination
in housing, recreation
and amusement sites, restaurants,
and bars—and the completion
of a new YWCA headquarters
downtown in 1959, the
YWCA sold the Williams Avenue
branch to the Billy Webb Elks.
The Billy Webb lodge was a
member of the Improved Benevolent
and Protective Order
of the Elks, an African American
branch of the BPOE. The lodge
was named for a prominent musician
who led an African American
Elks band that played in
Portland and on steamships on
the West Coast in the 1920s.
By the end of the twentieth
century, the building had fallen
into serious disrepair.
A major renovation of the
Billy Webb Elks Lodge was undertaken
in 2008-2009 with the
assistance of the National Association
of Minority Contractors
of Oregon. Much of the
building was restored close to
its original appearance, a new
roof and mechanical systems
were installed, and a ramp
system was added to allow access
by persons with disabilities.
The building continues to
serve as an Elks lodge.
“It is one of the most signifi
cant African American
historic buildings in the Pacifi
c Northwest,” said Cathy
Galbraith, director of the
Bosco-Milligan Foundation,
an architectural preservation
advocacy group in Portland.
Every Friday, the lodge features
Reggae Flex, DJ for your
dancing and listening pleasure.
Also, Shirley Nannette Band
perfoms Sundays, 6-9. See ad
At Area 52
The People’s Jam draws hot jammers
By Edmund Jordan
Everybody likes good music
when they can catch it and Area 52
is one of those places that is alive
with it. Johnny Vargo holds down
the Sunday jams (also known as
“The Peoples Jam”) at Area 52,
located at 6920 S.E. 52 nd Avenue.
The music starts to kick at 4:30
and runs till 8:30 p.m., beginning
with Vargo’s house band, followed
by six to eight combinations of
jammers and or bands. It gets pretty
hot on the strings, drums and
vocals when people like Elvis Nagel
and his band take the stage.,
Many other acts continue with
other notable locals like Eric
“Sugar” Larsen on guitar, Shirley
Sanders (guitar and vocals), Cactus
Davis (keys and vocals), Sean
Schwee (drums), yours truly Ed
Jordan (drums), Stephen Weinstien
(drums), Brian Redine (bass), Lonel
Susan (guitar, vocals) and Dread
Neck doing what he does. There
are (too) many more to mention
that take the stage here and the
gambit of style in musical genres
can go from hard-stroking blues,
to country and western to Motown,
downtown, uptown, classic R&R,
all the way to something sideways!
Anyhow, these few hours on a Sunday
at Area 52 is better than a bag
full of monkeys and popcorn; bottom
line, the crowd is growing and
every thing is good, from the ser-
vice to the food, as well as the spirits.
This place is alive for the jam!!
It’s “The Peoples Jam,” yes it is!
April Williams (top lady of the
establishment) is a wonderful
host, always has a good kitchen
at work for breakfast, lunch, dinner
and anything else in between
(believe they’re called appetizers).
Tuesdays and Thursdays are taco
night specials, with Wednesdays
a “home cooked” dinner special.
Pricing is very easy on the pocket
book and service is “Johnny on the
spot,” not to mention that the full
service bar is conveniently hard at
work for the clientele.
Amazingly enough, the music
line up for this club is fully packed
for the upcoming months with the
March schedule beginning on
March 5 with Felony 3; the 11 th
with Hi Fi; 12th Jessy White; 17 th
Shirley Sanders and Sunset Red;
and of course, “The Peoples Jam”
every Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Music
always begins at 6:30 for the Friday/Saturday
night affairs and runs
until 10 p.m. Normal hours for Area
52 are 7 to 11 p.m. nightly. There’s
good things going on here with the
people and entertainment. Hats off
to Johnny Vargo for running a fun
and exciting jam for the people and
kudos to Williams for her hard work
and effort to make all this happen!
So, now that football season is
over and you’re not into throwing
peanuts at local area monkeys on
Sundays, do yourself a favor and
treat yourself to some darn good
tootin’ music at the Area 52 with
“The Peoples Jam.” It’s good for
the soul!! Keep yourself posted
upcoming issues of Positively Entertainment
CD Review ‘Light Up the Sky’
Chris Baron releases refreshing standout recording
By Michael P. Jones
(Writer’s note: This compact
disc was specially selected for the
“Great Northwest Music Preview &
Backstory” because of this singersongwriter’s
complete acceptance
of the discipline, dedication, and
personal investment of time that it
takes to get his original music to the
masses. Chris Baron is a professional
in every respect of the word,
and knows how to create that bond
between lyrics and the instrumentation
that is needed to create a song.
These qualities made him and his
compact disc ideal to review.)
You can explain Chris Baron in
one word: refreshing. The original
“The album features Bert’s highenergy
that’s exciting and totally unique…
they take country into a whole new
creates clearly makes him a standout
among other up-and-coming
musicians trying to make their
Baron’s Light Up The Sky CD
features 13 outstanding songs that
demonstrate the immense amount
of creativity he possesses. From
the fast-paced to the more gentle
tunes of living life your way, this
recording project seems to have
something for everyone; it needs
to be a “must have” on everyone’s
personal shopping list.
A song that clearly is a standout
is Lover Song. The dramatic arrangement
of this original tune
makes it an obvious hit on this CD,
which means it doesn’t get any better
than this. It is just one example
of the overwhelming musical talent
and impressive songwriting ability
of Baron. Definitely, there’s a lot
more where that song came from.
Light Up The Sky, although a
studio album, will give the listener
an idea of what they will get if they
have the opportunity hear Baron
live; he is not only an impressive
guitarist, but knows how to make
that special connection with his
Chinese Garden
Restaurant
k
audiences. No one will forget his
stage presence, professionalism
and seriousness that he invokes,
while entertaining those who are
within reach of the stage.
At the 30th Annual “Mount Hood
Huckleberry Festival & Barlow Trail
Days,” Baron delivered an impressive
solo performance with only himself
and his guitar. He obviously owned
the stage as he spoon-fed some
healthy morsels of his original tunes.
An audience member, now quiet after
Baron completed his performance,
gave the singer-songwriter non-stop
kudos, claiming that she was now
“a devoted fan.” She said she liked
everything about him, such as his
“more than comfortable stage presence,
his impressive vocal ability and
his knack of writing incredible original
songs.” It separates him from other
struggling singer-songwriters.
Whether you are listening to Baron’s
Light Up The Sky or watching
him on stage, this singer-songwriter
is jam-packed with creativity.
From folk and Americana, to pop
and rock, there is very little that
this singer-songwriter cannot do
with his music. Pick up a copy!
Travel Excursion - Part 1
Majestic Niagra Falls draws millions of travelers
Niagara Falls, a majestic and
beautiful theater of nature, a destination
wonder of the world and
an outstanding state park, draws
millions of travelers each year. Together
with the marvelous City of
Niagara Falls’ attractions, historical
sites, surrounding day trips,
hotels and restaurants, visitors
discover exciting, natural world
adventures and city attractions.
Upon arrival at the U.S. falls,
visitors gaze in awe at the picturesque
rainbows and powerful,
misty flow. Its thundering waters
seem to inspire a calm and
mesmerizing feeling that would
seem at odds with its intensity.
Yet, visitors line up along the
railings with cameras in hand to
capture its unique splendor and
to stare unendingly at the chain
of falls that drop over 167 feet.
Moreover, in the evenings, the
falls take on a new luminescent
beauty with colored lights that
change hue and highlight the
park’s pathways; perfect for a
magical evening stroll
Niagara Falls State Park, established
in 1885 and designed
by Frederick Law Olmsted, is really
a series of three waterfalls.
The American Falls and smaller
Bridal Veil Falls are divided by
Luna Island on the U.S. side,
with Horseshoe Falls lying mostly
on the Canadian side. After the
breath-taking view of the falls,
it’s time to explore the rest of
the park with all it has to offer. If
you want to experience the heart
of the falls close up, take a ride
on the famous Maid of the Mist,
located at the base of the Observation
Tower at Prospect Point.
This thrilling boat ride takes you
on a roundtrip excursion into the
churning waters at the base of
the falls. It is from this vantage
point that you realize the immense
power of the falls. Guests
are provided plastic ponchos, as
the waterfalls’ mist is similar to
undergoing a light rain shower.
However, the views are stunning
and the ion-charged spray is quite
refreshing, especially on a hot
day. Make sure you bring a water-
Niagra Falls, NY
resistant cell phone or camera if
you want to take photos.
Another great vantage point to
experience the falls is the Cave
of the Winds, located on Goat
Island. Guests explore American
Falls via a 175-foot elevator ride
down to a treaded wooden walkway
along the Niagara River to
the Hurricane Deck at the base
of the falls. This tour is exhilarating
and fun with the pounding
falls just a few feet away and the
mist creating a veritable tempest.
The views from the walkway and
deck are dramatic and a waterresistant
cell phone or camera
for photographs is essential, as
the water saturation point is high.
Further, the Cave of the Wind’s
staff provides guests sandals and
ponchos before their tour begins.
If you prefer a dryer view of the
falls with both the American and
Canadian falls in perfect view,
take a ride up the high-speed elevator
to the Observation Tower,
located by the Maid of the Mist.
The 230-foot tower overlook provides
the only real location for
stunning views of both the American
and Canadian Falls.
For a fascinating 40-minute
history of Niagara Falls, as well
as the brave people who went
over the falls in barrels, visit the
Niagara Legends of Adventure
Theater, located in the park’s
Visitor Center. The historic footage
and fabulous cinematography
create an enthralling visual
experience and one is of the
park’s must-visit attractions.
For additional park attractions, the
Aquarium of Niagara and the Niagara
Gorge Discovery Center with
its interactive displays and handson
learning are perfect for families
and those who wish to enhance
their visit. Moreover, it is very easy
to get around the park to the attractions
with the Niagara Falls Scenic
Trolley. The trolley is a fun way to
obtain a 30- minute park overview
from an onboard guide and you
have the ability to hop off the trolley
at anyone of the six attraction stops.
One of the best elements of the
paths throughout the lovely main
park and its islands. You can
spend literally hours strolling,
viewing and taking photos of the
falls, garden areas, bridges and
islands on mostly level paths.
One of the best walks for scenic
beauty of the falls and exploration
of the islands takes about
an hour-and-a-half. Start at the
park entrance then proceed to the
pedestrian bridge that crosses to
Goat Island. Here, little side paths
lead to incredible viewpoints
where the rapids races around
tiny islands; great for photos or a
rest on one of the park benches.
Continue your walk to Luna Island
for extraordinary views of the falls
then head to Terrapin Point (by
Top of the Falls Restaurant) for
views of the Canadian Horseshoe
Falls; and finally, on to the small
but enchanting Three Sisters Islands
for a view of the Canadian
swirling rapids.
For the best values on Niagara
Falls attractions, as well as oneday
unlimited pass on the Niagara
Scenic Trolley, consider purchasing
the Discovery Pass. You save
quite a bit and it’s easier than
standing in line and trying to purchase
tickets at each attraction.
is located just a few blocks
from the state park’s entrance on
Weck Pizza (a local specialty)
topped with caramelized onions,
beef, cheese and horseradish
If You Go:
For accommodations, the luxurious
European-style boutique
Giacomo Hotel, located on 1st
Street, catches the eye with an
amazing Art Deco Mayan Revival
exterior designed with five different
colors of brick. Originally,
the striking 20-story tall structure
was the United Building, used for
professional offices and opened
in 1929, the day of the stock
crash. Nine years ago, the building
was renovated and the Giacomo
Hotel opened in 2009. The
interior appeals with flourishes
of eclectic decor throughout the
public spaces and lobby with the
original architectural embellishments
adding to the design. The
gorgeous and large, chic rooms
emphasize classic European
touches to the decor, such as
ornate wallpapers, sophisticated
window treatments and club chair
with ottoman. Moreover, the comfortable
beds impress, decked
with fine linens and jacquard coverlets
for a blissful night’s sleep.
For an added considerate touch,
a Keurig coffee maker and mini
fridge are provided as well. For
additional information, visit www.
array of marvelous
restaurants. Wine on Third,
restaurants, features delicious,
tapas and fine dining. The menu
The Giacomo Hotel in The
City of Niagra Falls
focuses on their tasty tapas that
range from tuna and shrimp to
antipasto, with entrees offering a
good selection of meat and vegetarian
dishes. Try the Maytag
blue cheese encrusted filet that
sits atop whipped truffle Yukon
potatoes served with a divine,
burgundy demi-glace.
For a fun evening out, the
Hardrock Cafe, located on Prospect
Street, offers a hearty menu
from Tupelo Chicken Tenders to
smokehouse sandwiches, good
beer and killer burgers. After your
meal, look at all of the cool rockn-roll
memorabilia, especially the
back dining room that showcases
musical artists from Buffalo, NY.
The Red Coach Inn, located
on Buffalo Avenue, is a historic
building with British Tudor design.
The restaurant’s cozy ambience
imbues a perfect atmosphere for
enjoying a delectable and hearty
Sheppard’s Pie and a glass of
ale. However, other than the
Sheppard’s Pie, the restaurant’s
menu isn’t focused on British
dishes but rather on a fine selection
of continental fare.
Travel Excursion - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Vibrant art museums draw global visitors
By Patrice Raplee
Pittsburgh, with its magnificent
skyscrapers, copious bridges and
dynamic industries is a city that
excels in progress and creativity.
This inventive dynamism, together
with fascinating history and diverse
neighborhoods, shaped a flourishing
art culture that continues to
burgeon and draw global visitors to
Pittsburgh’s spectacular museums.
The Society For Contemporary
Craft, located on Smallman Street,
features contemporary art in craft
media by international, national
and regional artists. Since 1971,
Contemporary Craft has focused
on multicultural diversity and nonmainstream
art with innovative
exhibitions to promote a socially
engaged art experience. The current
exhibition, Mindful, explores
mental health through art from
14 artists across the country. Although
mental health is often a
difficult subject, the artists’ work
in Mindful imbues a powerful
statement through multi-media
expressions to help breakdown
societal stigmas. These 33 incredible
art pieces evoke a resonance
and compassion to help viewers
explore the impact that mental
illness has on today’s society. In
addition to Society For Contemporary
Craft’s changing exhibitions,
the gallery also offers a wonderful
education center, small permanent
collection and retail store. Often,
artists with works in exhibitions
sell their work at gallery and it is
an excellent opportunity to purchase
unique pieces. Mindful runs
through March 12 2016 and Fiber
Art International runs May 6-August
21 2016; free admission. For
additional information, visit http://
contemporarycraft.org.
If you visit SFCC, it is located in
the Strip Historic Market District.
The neighborhood is fun to explore
with boutiques, specialty grocers,
ethnic shops, restaurants and
cafes. Stop by Bella Notte for delicious
Italian Hoagies.
Andy Warhol, a native of Pittsburgh,
had a profound and creative
impact on visual arts and his
art will continue to do so for generations
to come. His massive art
legacy is on display in the city’s
fantastic Andy Warhol Museum,
located on Sandusky Street. Upon
entrance to the museum, the
journey into Warhol’s pop culture
begins. A large video screen displays
his gravestone, located at
the Saint John Baptist Byzantine
Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
The video screen refreshes every
few hours and monitors tributes
to Warhol with fans leaving everything
from stacked Campbell
Soup cans to Coca-Cola bottles
and Champagne.
The seventh floor of the Warhol
Museum exhibits a linear exposé
of his life beginning with his birth
name of Andrew Warhola, born
in 1928. From here, visitors are
able to learn about his family history,
early life and see several
of his first drawings, oil paintings
and his commercial illustrator success.
Moreover, as you explore
the museum, you’ll discover Warhol’s
vibrant and fascinating films,
video collections and sculptures,
as well as his 1960’s pop art,
such as the Three Marilyn’s and
Mick Jagger captured in acrylic
and silkscreen ink on canvas.
The interactive museum engages
visitors in Warhol’s art with two cool
exhibits to explore, the three-minute
film test and Silver Clouds. The film
screen test enables visitors to create
a black and white, three-minute
screen test of themselves and then
have it sent to their email address
(portray your best pensive look).
The Silver Clouds room is a Floating
Sculpture of inflated silver rectangles
that float about the room,
aided by floor fans, while visitors
gently push the silver clouds into
new configurations. For additional
information, visit www.warhol.org.
Another visually stunning and
intriguing contemporary art museum
to visit is the Mattress Factory,
located on Sampsonia Way. Originally,
artists founded the museum
Clayton Parlor at The
Frick Art & Historical Society
Art & Hisorical Center)
in 1977 to support artists working
in residence for the creation of
site-specific installations. The Mattress
Factory presents the works
of established and emerging artists
each year with 30 to 40 exhibitions
remaining on display from two to
twelve months. One of the exhibitions,
Chiharu Shiota’s Trace Of
Memory, is visually haunting with
webs of yarn encasing household
objects throughout several rooms
of the museum’s ancillary building.
The installation is reminiscent
of an almost forgotten dream that
surfaces with feelings of loss.
Shiota’s exhibition runs to the end
of May 2016.
The museum’s permanent displays
are captivating and striking,
from Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Dots
Mirrored Room to celebrated American
artist James Turrell’s light installations.
However, the museum’s
A Trace of Memory - The Matresss Factory
exhibitions can also be disarming
in their intensity, such as Greer
Lankton’s It’s All About ME, Not
You is autobiographical in nature
with her exhibit reflecting her life as
transgender and a drug-addict.
With brilliant, thought provoking
art located on four floors in
the main building, additional
exhibition sites and a satellite
gallery, the Mattress Factory is
an exciting museum to visit in
Pittsburgh. For additional information,
visit www.mattress.org.
For those interested in Pittsburgh’s
gilded age, The Frick Art
& Historical Center, located on
Reynolds Street, is situated on
five acres of gorgeous landscaped
lawns and gardens. Henry Clay
Frick, was Pittsburgh’s coke king
in the 1880s (bituminous coal) and
produced almost eighty percent
of the coke used by Pittsburgh’s
burgeoning iron and steel industries.
He was an avid art collector
for over 40-years. Frick’s daughter
Helen Clay Frick became a major
art collector as well and established
the Frick Art Museum to
display her collection 1970. In addition,
she willed her family home
Clayton and the surrounding estate
to be preserved and opened to the
public after her death. The Center,
with the restoration of Clayton, a
superb cafe, orientation center and
museum store opened in 1990.
The Frick Art & Historical Center
is one of the most fascinating art
and historical home museums in
the country. The Italian Renaissance-style
art museum houses a
fabulous permanent collection of
art by European masters from the
14th through the 18th centuries.
As visitors stroll through the museum’s
elegant oval rotunda and
intimate galleries, they’ll find decorative
arts, tapestries, Renaissance
and Baroque bronze statuettes,
Chinese porcelain and rare paintings.
Works by artists such as Rubens
and Giovanni di Paolo adorn
the Gallery of Italian Art. Exquisite
French art pieces (several that
were originally from the Palace of
Versailles) grace the collection as
well. Further, if you visit, make sure
to check the museum’s website, as
significant, special exhibitions are
on display three times a year with
past exhibits that include the magnificent
porcelain art, Forbidden
Fruit Chris Antemann At Meissen.
Clayton, the meticulously restored
Frick family home, is
equally amazing with its grand
collection of fine and decorative
art; it is one of the most beautiful
historic homes in the nation. The
interior is breath-taking and the
guided tour highlights the life of
the immensely wealthy Frick family
in the late 19th-century home.
Moreover, one of the rare aspects
of Clayton is that 93 percent of the
home’s decorative and fine art on
display was purchased by Henry
Clay Frick, such as the Monet
painting, Bords de la Sein a Lavacourt,
that hangs in the library.
With the fine art museum, historical
Clayton, the Green House and
Car and Carriage Museum, the
unique Frick Art & Historical Center
offers visitors an extraordinary
opportunity to view fine art and
experience the life and era of one
of America’s wealthiest families
and philanthropists. For additional
information and trip planning, visit
www.thefrickpittsburgh.org.
Of course, no Pittsburgh art museum
tour would be complete without
a visit to the Carnegie Museum
Of Art, considered one of the most
vital art foundations in the country.
Located on Forbes Avenue, the museum
features an outstanding collection
of international art, architectural
art and sculpture. A great place
Andy Warhol Museum (Photo by Patrice Raplee)
to begin your exploration is The
Hall Of Architect, a dynamic gallery
with its plaster cast collection of
architectural masterpieces from the
past. To walk through the remarkable
and enormous gallery by the
plaster casts, Roman cast columns
and sculptures affords a glimpse
of early Greece or Roman times.
After your visit, head up the wide,
grand staircase and venture into the
Scaife galleries to view the 19thcentury
Impressionists, such as Van
Gogh, Renoir and Monet. Or, visit
the beauty of Greek, Egyptian and
Roman reproduction sculptures.
art, the Carnegie Museum Of Art
museum is quite large, so make
If You Go
