Hello Whitmoor homeowners, 

We’re fast approaching the end of the year, and we have lots of 

matters to discuss. Besides the routine duties of our board, a few 

of the issues we plan to work on in the near future include: 

Nomination of Board Members – Several board members will 

fulfill their two year term, so we have opportunities for quality 

candidates to be nominated to replace them. If you, or someone 

you know, is interested in serving your community, please 

let one of the current board members know, so we can include 

them on the upcoming ballot. 

• Board members act as the voice of the homeowners. 

• Board members meet once a month to discuss any issues that 

need attention. 

• Each board member is assigned an 

area of responsibility to oversee and 

make recommendations to the board for 

approval/disapproval. 

Budget – we’re working on a budget for 

2016 and beyond, and there are a number 

of issues that will require additional 

funding, primarily street maintenance 

issues. Please be aware that your board 

is trading off necessary spending with 

costs to homeowners, so we will do our 

best for you. The budget that comes up 

for vote in late December will reflect 

our recommendations. 

Website – The new website is up and running strong, but there 

are still some of you that have not registered yet. This may mean 

you are missing vital information about your neighborhood. 

Now, and in the future, this is where you will find all updates, 

breaking news and everything regarding our neighborhood.

Picnic Committee and is currently involved in the Archdiocese 

of St. Louis’ Beyond Sunday campaign for Catholic education. 

Professionally, John was recognized as one of the “Top Wealth 

Managers in St. Louis for 2015” by Five Star Professional in St. 

Louis Magazine for providing exceptional wealth management 

services to clients. The Hofman Group at Morgan Stanley will 

be taking over the Financial Fitness segment of this publication. 

Whitmoor Life is excited to have the Hofmans share meaningful

know the group and their successful practice, we caught up with 

them earlier this month. Here’s what they had to say.

Meet The Hofman Family 

THE HOFMAN FAMILY: A WHITMOOR STORY 

John and Mary Hofman settled their 

young family in Whitmoor on Valentine’s 

Day 1990. As one of the first fifty 

houses built, John and Mary recognized 

the neighborhood’s potential early on. 

“We knew that Whitmoor would be a 

special place to raise our family,” said 

Mary. With four children under the 

age of five, John was excited about the 

family-friendly nature of the neighborhood. 

“We were thrilled about our new 

home, but even more excited by the 

community we joined,” said John. 

The couple reminisces about their early 

days in the neighborhood with a smile. 

They shared a memory from one of the 

first parties they attended at Whitmoor for 

Halloween 1990. “Whitmoor didn’t have a 

clubhouse back then, so the party was held 

in the golf cart shack,” Mary said. “Everyone 

had a blast! It didn’t matter where 

we were, just that we were together with 

friends and neighbors.” John recalls other 

early memories, too. “We loved watching 

all the houses being constructed as the 

neighborhood developed. People were 

constantly visiting the new homes because 

they were all so different.” 

As the neighborhood grew, John and 

Mary were involved in some of the early 

neighborhood developments. John is a 

past member of the Whitmoor Homeowners’ 

Association Board of Directors 

and used to provide the “Ho Ho Ho” 

during the meet and greet with Santa 

Claus each December. Mary is a former 

Weldon Spring alderman and the founder 

of the neighborhood’s annual Fourth 

of July Bike Parade. 

As they had planned, Whitmoor was 

the perfect place for John and Mary to 

raise their four children. Molly, Brittany, 

Jimmy, and Bobby spent their childhoods 

at the Club, and it was as if the neighborhood 

grew and matured as they did. Each 

child attended St. Joseph-Cottleville for 

grade school, and they spent their summers 

splashing through the Whitmoor 

pool, taking tennis lessons, and participating 

in junior golf. All four later served 

as lifeguards at the Whitmoor pool. In 

fact, there was a seven year stretch where 

not a summer went by without a Hofman 

on the lifeguard stand. 

After St. Joseph, Molly and Brittany 

went on to Villa Duchesne while Jimmy 

and Bobby attended Chaminade. Upon 

graduating from high school, each Hofman 

decided to spend their college years 

at Mizzou, where John and Mary met in 

30th wedding anniversary at Busch stadium

1980. Molly, Jimmy, and Bobby graduated 

with Masters of Accountancy degrees and 

Brittany graduated with a business degree 

in 2012 and will graduate this spring as a 

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. 

The Hofman children have grown 

considerably since their pool-days and 

are now in their 20s. Molly worked as 

a CPA in Denver several years before 

moving to Clayton, MO to work at 

Edward Jones as a mutual fund product 

specialist. Brittany plans to return to St. Louis upon her 

graduation from veterinary school and hopes to one day buy 

into an existing veterinary clinic. Jimmy recently married his 

long-time Whitmoor sweetheart, Abby Jane (daughter of 

Whitmoor residents Jerry and Lesa Keeven), and the couple 

now lives in Webster Groves. Jimmy joined John at Morgan 

Stanley in 2013 and has since earned his Certified Financial 

Planner designation. After a successful college career, Bobby 

joined The Hofman Group at Morgan Stanley last June. 

Presently, John and Mary still live in their home on Gillette 

Circle Pass and cannot imagine living anywhere else. They 

enjoy participating in the men’s and women’s golf leagues at the 

Club and recently joined the Nine & Dine Couple’s league. In 

addition, John and Mary have been involved parishioners at 

St. Joseph-Cottleville for over 25 years. Mary has served both 

on the Parish Council and as President of the Parent-Teacher 

Association, while John has held integral positions on the Parish 

WL: John, you’ve been a financial advisor for nearly thirty 

years. What is the most important thing investors need to do 

to achieve their goals? 

John: Financial success comes from acting on a plan. Creating 

a financial plan enables you to see the big picture and set 

long- and short-term life goals, a crucial step in mapping out 

your financial future. With a financial plan in place, it’s easier 

to make financial decisions and stay on track to meet your 

goals. Just like when Mary and I moved into this community 

twenty-five years ago, it took a long-term plan. We moved into

a neighborhood with a bunch of empty 

lots, and we’ve had to tweak the plan a 

few times, but it has worked out for us. 

Most financial failures come from not 

having a plan and thus reacting irrationally 

to market movements. 

WL: What is the biggest concern retirees 

face today? 

John: Retirement income is the biggest 

financial planning issue of our time. 

Investors are fearful they will outlive 

their money primarily because of low 

interest rates, rising healthcare costs, 

and longevity. This causes uncertainty 

on how much to withdraw from their 

retirement accounts and when to begin 

taking Social Security. Our written 

financial plans for our clients utilize 

strategies designed to maximize income 

in retirement. This approach considers 

an individual’s current situation and 

anticipates their lifestyle spending in 

retirement to help ensure they’re not 

derailed by an unexpected life event.

WL: What is your investment approach? 

Jimmy: We run a very disciplined financial advisory practice, striving 

for low fees, high tax efficiency, and appropriate risk management.

from others? 

John: Our continuity plan is a big differentiator. Our clients

1994, out of our screened porch we looked over the north third tee 

and our bay window, in which I had a chair overlooking the lake 

and second green. I enjoyed sitting reading in the morning looking 

over the lake and green and did find it enjoyable to see if the 

next shot would make it onto the green. 

We truly enjoyed our time in Whitmoor and our interactions with our 

neighbors, good people with good hearts. We subsequently moved to 

Defiance in 2000 on about four acres of land and love the serenity and 

space, although there are times when I certainly miss the walks on the 

course in the evenings or enjoying the fine facilities at Whitmoor. 

Interestingly, our son went to Howell and was an All-Conference, 

District and State baseball player on the 2003 State Championship 

team, he graduated in 2005. While we lived in Whitmoor he attended 

middle school at Living Word Christian School, but the year we moved 

to Defiance he started attending Howell, and guess what-a lot of his 

teammates, friends, girlfriend lived in Whitmoor – go figure! 

We opened Elements Massage on December 20, 2014 as the first

What is the best part the art program at LWCS? The quality 

work students produce and the things that I learn from them. 

What art classes are offered at LWCS? Our art classes introduce 

students to watercolor, acrylic and encaustic painting.

3. Once they arrived there was time for a tailgate before kickoff

alone with limited supplies, uses his 

inventiveness to survive and his witty spirit to find a way to signal 

Earth that he is alive. The movie unfolds with sophisticated 

entertainment and a great blend between absurd and the thrilling. 

Between the four of us, we had varied opinions from poor 

to superb; therefore, I’ve given it an above-average rating.

Bridge of Spies 

Starring Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance 

The story is based on attorney James B. 

Donovan (Hanks) and how he managed to 

exchange spies between East Germany, the 

USSR and the USA in the middle of the 

Cold War. It takes place in the late 50s, early 60s when the wall 

between East Germany and West Germany was being built. 

Donovan, recruited by the CIA, was involved in an intense mission 

to quietly negotiate the release and exchange of Francis 

Gary Powers, a CIA spy plane pilot who was arrested after his 

plan was shot down by the Soviet Union, with a KGB intelligence 

officer, Rudolf Abel (Rylance), who was arrested for 

espionage in the U.S. 

The assignment becomes more complicated and intriguing when 

Donovan is sent to Berlin to carry out his negotiations. Whether 

you know the story or the history, it becomes a thriller that will 

have you hanging on every word and action. Both Hanks and 

Rylance’s performances are compelling but it’s Rylance who 

dominates the film with his fine distinction that will surely win 

the hearts of many and likely an Oscar nomination.

Six crazy whitmoor friends charged the 

big apple in october. Kathy Albright, 

Barb Dacus, Pat Bangert, BJ Pruscazyk, 

Sylvia Fuchs and Dee Welshans hit the 

ground running. The first night we went 

to a play A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, a relatively 

new tony – award winning hilarious british comedy. 

The next morning we left our sheratin hotel in times square and 

took off to tour uptown manhattan, stopping by madame tussauds, 

central park, the famous apollo theatre in harlem, grants tomb 

and onto the bronx to yankee stadium. Coming back we went by

Next day, next stop ... Rockefeller center,

and jazz clubs. 

Lastly, we visited st. Patricks cathedral 

and thanked god for a wonderful trip 

with great friends and for all the new 

yorkers who made our trip an unbelievable

lunch. That evening went on a sunset cruise of new york harbor. 

Thursday morning Barb, Pat, Kathy and Sylvia caught the subway 

early to go on a tour of the new york stock exchange, which 

was set up by John Hoffman, a financial advisor and friend in 

Whitmoor. BJ and Dee followed via subway (yes we used every 

form of transportation from taxi, bus, ferry and subway. We may 

be old but we figured it out). On leaving wall street and new 

york's financial district, it was our day to visit the 9/11 memorial 

and museum, a striking and solemn tribute to this tragic event. 

The reflecting twin pools set in the footprints of the twin towers 

display the names of all who died. 

With heavy hearts we walked to battery park, caught the ferry 

and viewed the many islands where immigrants first entered 

america, and of course, the statue of liberty. Do you know her 

finger is eight feet long? Ended this day by working our way 

into the renound rainbow room to enjoy the breathtaking sights 

and grapes of nyc.

Managing Grief During The Holidays 

The holidays are a busy time, full of joyful gatherings of family 

and friends, a time of reflection and fond memories. But 

for those who have experienced the death of a loved one, the 

holidays can seem much more daunting, especially stressful and 

lonely. For those affected by the recent hurricanes that devastated 

much of the south, this holiday season may present an even 

greater sense of loss.

On Friday, October 16, the pavilion was turned into a pig 

roast paradise for the Street Dance. The great outdoors was 

the perfect place to spend this crisp, fall night. There were 

fire pits to warm the body and good drinks and food to warm 

the soul. Music of the Beatles was provided by The Abbey

Take care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Don't 

be afraid to set limits. The holiday season is busy enough 

that it can exhaust anyone, but if you are shouldering an 

extra burden of grief, it only makes it more unappealing. 

Get enough sleep, eat well and take time out for yourself. 

Think about what family traditions you want to take part in, 

and what may be too much, and don't be afraid to say no to 

activities that may overwhelm you. 

Share your memories with others. Speaking about your loved 

ones and sharing remembrances can often help alleviate some 

of the pain of the season. If it helps, take part in a memorial or 

remembrance service at your local place of worship or family 

funeral home. Spending time with others who understand what 

you're going through is often a great source of comfort. 

Above all, do what's right for you. Your family and friends 

care about you, and will likely offer advice about what they 

think is best for the grieving process. Don't forget to do what 

feels most comfortable for you. If volunteering at a local hospital 

or food pantry helps you heal, then seek out opportunities in 

the community. If stepping back from a more active role in your 

family's celebratory activities is the best way, let them know. It is 

perfectly natural to need time and space to honor your feelings, 

and the memory of your loved one. But don't forget to seek out 

your family and friends for support. You are not alone.

Watch Party at the Sand Trap 

Whitmoor residents gathered on Saturday, October 10, to watch 

the NLDS 2015 Game 2, Cards vs. Cubs. It didn't end well for 

the Cards this season, but Whitmoor residents had fun getting 

together to watch the long standing rival Cubs take on our Redbirds. 

Drink specials and 50-cent wings made for a great time.

Monthly Meeting of Women at Whitmoor Country Club 

On the first Tuesday of the month there's a large group of women 

from the Christian Women’s Club that meets for lunch at 

the Clubhouse. In addition to a fabulous lunch, they gather for 

faith, friendship and to support Stonecroft in a variety of ways. 

This past October's meeting was the annual auction. Guests bid 

on a variety of items including books, gift certificates, blankets, 

centerpieces, serving dishes and so much more. But the most 

popular items were the overflowing array of themed baskets. 

Money raised supports Stonecroft, whose mission is to share the 

gospel of Jesus Christ to women wherever they are, locally and

A committee of women help prepare the monthly meetings. 

Area director Pam Gammon is assisted by some wonderful 

women like Betty Nelson and Cheryl Belzer. “This group is 

a great way for women to meet others who are Christian and 

want to help support the good work we do,” said Cheryl. 

The group has been meeting for over 20 years and usually has 

over 100 ladies at its monthly meetings. All women from the area 

are invited to attend any meetings, including non-Whitmoor 

members. Each guest will then receive information to attend the 

next meeting. There are no fees and your only cost is lunch.

At The Clubhouse 

The little Whitmoor ghosts and goblins donned their Halloween 

costumes for a party at the Club. As usual, the staff outdid 

themselves and provided some amazing creepy crawly scary 

food and drink for all to enjoy. There were lots of families on 

hand to celebrate the occasion among the creative decorations 

and everyone enjoyed the time together

Preparing for an annual financial review may be easier with a 

checklist to help you focus on important matters. With that in 

mind, here is a list of key considerations that you may want to 

discuss with your financial advisor. 

• Do I need to rebalance my asset allocation? Depending on 

the performance of your investments, you may want to examine 

whether your mix of stocks, bonds, cash, and other assets 

is close to your target. If you have not reviewed your portfolio 

lately, you may be surprised at what you find. It's possible that 

your current asset allocation has changed quite a bit since the 

last time you checked, due to the different performance of 

the various investments in your portfolio. 1 If that's the case, 

or if your outlook has changed, it may be time to readjust. 

Rebalancing can be accomplished in two ways: You can sell 

existing assets and use the proceeds to bring your portfolio 

closer to your desired mix. Or you can leave your portfolio as 

is and allocate new investments to the areas that you want to 

increase. Rebalancing may involve tax consequences, especially 

for non-tax-deferred accounts. 

• What were my yearly capital gains and losses? If your yearend 

planning entails selling certain assets, be aware of rules 

regarding capital gains and losses. Gains on investments held 

less than one year – known as short-term capital gains – are 

taxed as ordinary income, while those on investments held for 

one year or longer, or long-term capital gains, are taxed at a 

maximum rate of 20%, for federal income tax purposes. State 

tax rules may differ. On the federal level, capital losses offset 

capital gains and are netted against each other. If net capital 

losses still remain, up to $3,000 may be used to offset ordinary 

income. Capital losses not used in a given year can be carried 

forward to future years. Note that different rules apply for gains 

on the sale of collectibles, or qualified small-business stock. 

• Is my estate plan current? If you have not already made an 

estate plan, your annual review may be a good time to start. 

Even if you already have a plan in place, it is good to revisit 

it yearly to make sure your beneficiary designations are up to 

date and that your plan still reflects your current wishes. This 

is also a good time to consider tax-efficient gifting strategies, 

so you can potentially minimize gift and estate taxes and keep 

more of your assets for those you care about. 

You may have additional concerns unique to your situation, but this 

checklist may help you keep your investment portfolio in order.
