Hugo Aboites is Professor of Education and rector of the Autonomous University of<br />

Mexico City. He is author of numerous books and articles, including The School as<br />

Community Hub: Beyond Education’s Iron Cage<br />

Christine Blower is General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers and<br />

President of ETUCE, the European section of Education International. She taught<br />

from 1973 until she was elected as Deputy General Secretary and has classroom<br />

experience in both primary and secondary settings as well as Pupil Referral Units. As<br />

the grandmother of a 3 year old she fears for the future of education!<br />

Carol Caref, research director for the Chicago Teachers Union, is the lead author of<br />

several CTU publications; the most recent is A Just Chicago: Fighting for the City<br />

Our Students Deserve. This report details the intimate connection of health, housing,<br />

jobs, segregation, and funding to education. Before coming to the CTU in 2010, Carol<br />

taught high school mathematics in Chicago Public Schools for 25 years. She is<br />

passionate about teaching and fighting for what students need and deserve.<br />

Lars Dahlström is Emeritus Associate Professor of Education, Umea University. He<br />

has written and researched extensively on the effects of neoliberal education policy,<br />

particularly in the global South. His latest publications include: You are being<br />

cheated: a critical analysis of Teach for Sweden and Case Studies of Teacher Education<br />

Forces in the Global South: Pedagogical possibilities when the main door is closed<br />

(together with John Nyambe)<br />

Angelo Gavrielatos is the Project Director at Educational International (EI)<br />

responsible for leading EI’s response to the growing commercialisation and<br />

privatisation of education. He was the Federal President of the Australian Education<br />

Union (AEU) for 7 years prior to commencing work with EI. He started his career as<br />

a secondary teacher in Green valley in South West Sydney in 1987. His commitment<br />

to social justice unionism is at the heart of his work.<br />

Edgar Isch is an academic who works closely with UNE, the union that represents<br />

teachers in Ecuador. He was environment minister in the government of Ecuador for<br />

a short time before leaving the position as a critic of the extractivist direction taken<br />

by the current government. He is a member of the Research Network of the IDEA<br />

Network that publishes research and the bilingual magazine Intercambio.<br />

Larry Kuehn is Director of Research and Technology at the British Columbia<br />

Teachers’ Federation in Canada. He is also responsible for the International<br />

Solidarity Program of the BCTF and writes about the impact of neo-liberal<br />

Global education ‘reform’ | 7
