time of writ<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g this is a 'no no' if you want <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> use the <str<strong>on</strong>g>built</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>. The first<br />

problem was that GlobeTrotter v1.0 is not compatible <strong>with</strong> W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7. S<strong>on</strong>y have solved this<br />

by mak<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g GlobeTrotter v2.0 available from <strong>Vaio</strong>’s downloads page (choose the WWAN<br />

drivers for Vista). The <strong>on</strong>e rema<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g problem is that the VAIO Smart Net<str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> utility does<br />

not <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> under W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7. This means that it is not possible <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> turn <strong>on</strong> the power <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>built</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g> and GlobeTrotter 2/W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 recognise it. [For developers, some<strong>on</strong>e has<br />

figured out how <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> do this and implemented it under L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ux, so some<strong>on</strong>e could use this <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

write a W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 driver]. For now we'll have <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> wait until S<strong>on</strong>y release a lap<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p <strong>with</strong><br />

W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 pre-<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalled, and then hope <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> use the <strong>Vaio</strong> smart net<str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> off that.<br />

Other than the <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g> problem my S<strong>on</strong>y TZ21 is runn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 RC f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e (make sure you go<br />

Further Update <strong>on</strong> W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 - Work<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g! (28-May-2010): I have been runn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 <strong>with</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g> for a while now. Everyth<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g is <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g just f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e. The th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs I did <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get it<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g were:<br />

· Use W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 32-bit (the 64-bit versi<strong>on</strong> seems <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have issues <strong>with</strong> some of the S<strong>on</strong>y<br />

Drivers). It’s better <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> upgrade from Vista, that way all your drivers will be there.<br />

· If your wireless switch utility (smart net<str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g>) displays funny it’s because there are some<br />

shared driver dlls from S<strong>on</strong>y which must also be <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalled. If I remember correctly there<br />

were two sets, they are all available from the S<strong>on</strong>y drivers website. In short, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stall absolutely<br />

everyth<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g S<strong>on</strong>y offer. Note:- this w<strong>on</strong>’t be an issue if you chose <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘upgrade’ w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows.<br />

· Follow this guide, and make sure you are us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g GlobeTrotter v2.<br />

· Now, when you launch Globe trotter, or W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7 <str<strong>on</strong>g>built</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> you’ll get an<br />

error code. This error code translates <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the hardware be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>-use. I d<strong>on</strong>’t have the error<br />

code <strong>any</strong>more, but if you get it please post it <strong>on</strong> this blog. To solve this open your W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows 7<br />

net<str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> center, and as l<strong>on</strong>g as you have WWAN activated you will see a c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> for your<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Click it, and delete the c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>. Yes Delete it! It’s s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>pp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the GlobeTrotter driver<br />

be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> access your hardware. Now reboot.<br />

· F<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ally you can now c<strong>on</strong>nect us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g GlobeTrotter, or even better, by right click<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> the<br />

W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows net<str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> ic<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the tray and choos<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>nect <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g> (w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows uses the<br />

GlobeTrotter driver <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the background). I always use the latter.<br />

This is a complete guide <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> gett<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the <str<strong>on</strong>g>built</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g>/HSDPA <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

There is a lot of<br />

loose <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>formati<strong>on</strong> float<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g around <strong>on</strong> the Internet; this is a c<strong>on</strong>solidated and tested<br />

So far this has been tested thoroughly <strong>with</strong> W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows Vista, but should also apply <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

W<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dows XP.<br />

Note: Some <strong>Vaio</strong>s do sometimes have problems c<strong>on</strong>nect<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g at this stage (after a<br />

With the VAIO P-Ser<strong>ie</strong>s, the WWAN seems <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> a little more seamlessly. I<br />

have a PAYG Vodaf<strong>on</strong>e <strong>SIM</strong> and it <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>with</strong>out <strong>any</strong> credentials <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

gett<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a really lousy signal for some reas<strong>on</strong>, the c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> doesn't drop-out.<br />

Hav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g said that, it's a bit of a black art <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get the device powered-up: bear <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

S<strong>on</strong>y's Smart Net<str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> usually does the trick. That not<strong>with</strong>stand<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g, I have<br />

been unable <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> send out-go<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g SMS (get an "0x840201f4: Unknown Error"),<br />

Hi Nigel,<br />

I'm not sure if the Orange software would <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terfere <strong>with</strong> Globetrotter. Firstly<br />

I’d like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> say that you do need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make sure you have the ‘generic’<br />

Globetrotter <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalled, not a brand specific <strong>on</strong>e. See the article for where <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get<br />

this.<br />

I would ensure that all Orange software is completely removed and try aga<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

If globetrotter tr<strong>ie</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> use Orange’s drivers I’m pretty sure it w<strong>on</strong>’t <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>with</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>built</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>3G</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

There is a known issue <strong>with</strong> Orange 3g sim cards, certa<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ly <strong>with</strong> the <strong>Vaio</strong> TZ's<br />

and possibly <strong>with</strong> all vaio's. the l<strong>on</strong>g and short is that new orange sims will<br />

not <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> for an unknow reas<strong>on</strong>. The soluti<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get an older profile sim:<br />

"A TZ31 needs an Orange "profile 34" <strong>SIM</strong> - not the newer "profile 39"."<br />

Hope this is of help <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> some.<br />

If you get "Device found, please wait while <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>itializ<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g" and this hangs forever<br />

your problem is likely <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be that you have a profile 39 sim.<br />

I bought Vodaf<strong>on</strong>e payg <strong>SIM</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Spa<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Now try<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get it <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g> before I go<br />

back there. Followed the guide (<strong>with</strong> a few variati<strong>on</strong>s) and can get <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t<br />

of Globetrotter C<strong>on</strong>nect accept<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g my PIN, and w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dow says "Roam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Vodaf<strong>on</strong>e UK" <strong>with</strong> GPRS signal strength <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dica<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. But I get the same error<br />

each time 0x84000011. Maybe the <strong>SIM</strong> just needs <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>pped up (my credit from<br />

last time probably expired). Is there <strong>any</strong>th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g else I should try?<br />

Got it <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g now, thanks for the excellent guide. Some variati<strong>on</strong>s, and this<br />

is for a VGN-Z11WN, runn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Vista:<br />

The Globetrotter software was <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> "Pre<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalled Software" I already had the<br />

basic driver, but had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> download "Globetrotter C<strong>on</strong>nect" as well. I <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>o found<br />

that the register sett<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g file was ...6911.. not ...6901...<br />

And for Vodaf<strong>on</strong>e Spa<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, the sett<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs are APN: airtelwap.es USER wap@wap<br />

PASSWORD wap125<br />

I have really good c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> and even <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>with</strong> my pop3 email account.<br />

Sorry, correcti<strong>on</strong>, leave the name/password as vodaf<strong>on</strong>e/vodaf<strong>on</strong>e and<br />

change the APN <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> airtelnet.es<br />

I registered <strong>with</strong> vodaf<strong>on</strong>e spa<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, which <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>volves receiv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g an SMS so I had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

take <strong>SIM</strong> out of <strong>Vaio</strong>, put <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> ph<strong>on</strong>e, read SMS, then put back <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> PC. I d<strong>on</strong>'t see<br />

a method <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Globetrotter <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> read/send SMS messages - that would be quite<br />

useful if <strong>any</strong><strong>on</strong>e knows of a way. Anyway, it means I can see my pre-pay<br />

account balance <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> euros, but not the mB rema<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> my data tariff. I hear<br />

tell of a Vodaf<strong>on</strong>e Dashboard, but am loath <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> download <strong>any</strong>th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g from<br />

Vodaf<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> case it messes up my, now <str<strong>on</strong>g>work</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g, data c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
