Preface
The Statistical Yearbook of Norway 2000 contains many relevant statistics on Norway. The yearbook
also contains the main figures from other countries selected from international statistics. With the
help of 734 tables and figures, Statistics Norway presents both the current situation and the trend
over a period of time in a form that most people can use.
The yearbook presents the main figures from the official statistics for all the subjects that Statistics
Norway covers, based on material retrieved through our own surveys and from administrative
registers made available for statistical purposes in co-operation with many other public organisations.
The statistics comply with established principles, standards and classifications, and also comply with
international recommendations and guidelines.
The Statistical Yearbook of Norway is a useful reference work - an encyclopaedia in numbers - at
home, in schools, and in professional contexts. The list of tables and figures and an alphabetical index
at the back of the book make it easy to find relevant information. The source references in the tables
also make the yearbook a good starting point for those who are looking for more detailed statistics.
In this edition the references to our sources and to further information have been expanded and
improved.
This year's edition, the 119th issue, is strongly influenced by the turn of the millennium. Thus, it contains
a number of historical tables especially compiled for the Statistical Yearbook of Norway 2000.
Many of the tables go all the way back to the nineteenth century and provide a good insight into the
trend up to the present day.
We have also decided to include some new tables for the Nordic countries, where comparisons are
made possible by co-ordination among the various Nordic central bureaux of statistics. This Nordic
co-operation is increasing, and so we expect to expand this part of the yearbook in the coming years.
A separate Norwegian edition of the yearbook is published. Both editions are available in an electronic
version at Statistics Norway's home page on the Internet.
The Statistical Yearbook of Norway 2000 is edited by Senior Executive Officer Ase Lukerstuen. Adviser
Espen Søbye has prepared the historical tables and Executive Officer Sin Boquist is in charge of the
yearbook's design. In addition, more than one hundred persons from within and outside Statistics
Norway have made important contributions to this edition of the Statistical Yearbook of Norway.
