THE TOWN OF <strong>CHINAMECA</strong> Page 5 There is an History in Every Town <strong>CHINAMECA</strong> AND ITS MOUNTAINS HISTORY The conquest of Chinameca and indigenous people it was conducted by settlers from the village of San Salvador, in early 1529, according to eyewitness Pedro Cerón, "They went to conquer the province and land they called Popocatépetl, which now they call province of San Miguel, that was raised in war ". That name, Popocatépetl, which the Spaniards gave to that Salvadoran region, means in Pipil-Nahuatl language "Cerro que Humea" or in English Smocking Hill, or popoca, "hechar humo" (fuming), and tepec, Cerro ; the etymology refers undoubtedly to Los Ausoles, Infiernillos or Fumaroles of La Sierra de Chinameca, that are in constant activity of which the main ones are those of Chambolo, Loma Alta, El Hervidero, Water Tibiae, Lemongrass, Choyo and others. In 1770, this town is annexed to the parish of Usulutan and with a population of 252 people in 40 families.
