The capital region features a unique agglomeration<br />

to over 60 countries. The plant possesses<br />
one of <strong>the</strong> most high-performance test fields<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, which accommodates test runs of<br />
up to 330 megawatts. In Ludwigsfelde <strong>in</strong> Br<strong>and</strong>enburg,<br />
it also operates a burner test center.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> HFI-TU Berl<strong>in</strong> energy laboratory, scientists<br />

With four atmospheric combustion test benches,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y can conduct tests under <strong>the</strong> conditions<br />
that actually exist <strong>in</strong> gas power stations<br />
<strong>and</strong> aircraft eng<strong>in</strong>es. As part of three research<br />
projects, new k<strong>in</strong>ds of systems are tested with<br />
<strong>the</strong> goal of significantly <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g gas turb<strong>in</strong>e<br />
technology's level of effectiveness. And as part<br />
of a Collaborative Research Center project,<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eers are exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> use of Otto cycle<br />
combustion <strong>in</strong> gas turb<strong>in</strong>es. The »Greenest«<br />
European Research Council (ERC) project <strong>in</strong>volves<br />
ultra wet combustion. As part of an ERC<br />
proof-of-concept project, researchers are exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> combustion of biogas <strong>and</strong> hydrogen<br />
with pure oxygen. In addition, <strong>the</strong> department<br />
offers extensive opportunities for <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmoacoustical<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ation of gas turb<strong>in</strong>e burners.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster »Life<br />
Cycle Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g for Turbomach<strong>in</strong>es« six research<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutes have b<strong>and</strong>ed toge<strong>the</strong>r with<br />
26 partners from <strong>in</strong>dustry. They are focus<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on an <strong>in</strong>tegrated view of materials <strong>and</strong> technologies<br />
for turbomach<strong>in</strong>ery <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aviation <strong>and</strong><br />
energy sectors. Their goal is to transfer <strong>the</strong><br />
concept of life cycle eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g to turbomach<strong>in</strong>ery<br />
by provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative, energyefficient<br />
