Walking beneath the gallows of the old
Sandhurst Gaol is part of Ulumbarra’s allure.
The new 1000-seat theatre is a feat of
architectural brilliance, within historic high
stone walls. The theatre is the grandest
example of a city reclaiming its heritage. The
trend provides a new way to enjoy Bendigo’s
historic buildings.
The places of old have been re-imagined as
some of the state’s best eateries; find Masons
of Bendigo restaurant in a former glass
factory, The Good Loaf bakery in a circular
Beaurepaires building, Brewhouse Coffee
Roasters in a former tile factory, Percy & Percy
a former green grocer store and The Corner
Store Café in a neighbourhood milk bar.
Even Bendigo’s famous vintage trams have
been further revived as a Yarn tram, Blues
tram and design icons by Jimmy Possum and
the Schaller Studio.
Highlight
Rocks on Rosalind in View St was once the
National Bank, built in 1863 on the site of the
original gold smelter. Look for the reef map on
the bar wall, and a bullet hole in the window;
the remnants of an alleged robbery attempt.
