The City Maribyrnong is home to a creative community with many talented, inspiring people bringing arts and culture to our city. It is fantastic that we have events such as this Festival that support emerging talent and provide a platform for showcasing it to the wider community. This is the first and only short film festival that specifically showcases filmmakers from the western suburbs. It is a unique event driven by passionate people who work incredibly hard to make this city the artsy, edgy place it is. We are thrilled to be a part of it. See you in Yarraville at the Setting Sun Short Film Festival. We are proud to be one of the inaugural sponsors of this event and we continue our support into year 3 of the Festival. Our slogan is “Growing the Inner West” and the SSSFF clearly gives our community the opportunity to showcase their talents and grow their filmmaking and story telling abilities. We look forward to viewing the films and being part of the festivities. Wonders of the West, the 3rd SSSFF, continues to grow. It is now the largest short film festival in the west. This festival is only as good as the filmmakers who enter their films. This year is our best yet. We received films from emerging and talented and award winning experienced filmmakers. We have nine sessions, seven at The Sun Theatre and two kids programs at Footscray Town Hall. This year, we put a call out for women filmmakers to enter a special program dedicated to showcasing their talents in a bid to redress discriminatory imbalances under Screen Australia’s Gender Matters Initiative. We’re pleased participation from women increased by 35%. 2

As demonstrated so well in previous years, Setting Sun provides an invaluable platform for local filmmakers and content creators living and working in Melbourne’s vibrant Western Suburbs to share their stories and refine their filmmaking craft. As Victoria’s Screen Resource Organisation, providing opportunities for emerging and early career filmmakers to connect with the professional screen industry, Open Channel looks forward to seeing some of the new storytelling voices showcased through the 2016 festival, and offering our ongoing support to the emerging filmmaking community in the West! As the hub for film, video, photography and digital media production in Yarraville, it is wonderful to see a range of technical production talent showcased here in Melbourne’s West.
