New in-house minor surgery service MINOR SURGERY BOTOX We will soon be opening a new JDoc365 facility at the Golders Green surgery. From there, Dr. Ajay Bhundia will be providing minor surgery, Botox and dermal filler therapies. CASE STUDY Removal of Cysts A young man of 23 years suffered with cysts in his scalp. There was hair loss over the cysts and he was worried about further loss. Dr. Bhundia removed the cysts with minimal scarring, and the patient reported full hair regrowth shortly afterwards. CASE STUDY Removal of Lipoma A 27 year old professional volleyball player had a large lipoma (fatty tissue growth) on her right shoulder which impeded her game. Dr Bhundia excised the lesion and the patient went on to represent her club and country with no further hindrance. AFFILIATE PARTNER FEATURE PROFBIOTICS THE FOOD FIGHTERS by Tara Whyand M.Sc, B.Sc, specialist dietitian and nutrition advisor to ProfBiotics.com Following my article on irritable bowel syndrome in the last edition (page 7), this time I look at food supplements which may be of use to IBS sufferers. As previously mentioned, the probable main cause of altered movements is down to changes in our gut bacteria. This can include stress, busy lifestyles, drugs and poor dietary choices. Unless you address the bacteria imbalances directly and work out what is affecting them, your symptoms will never go away. If you think about it, how you act and what you consume creates the environment for particular strains of bacteria to either flourish, or die off. What we want is to have a huge variety of strains living in the bowel. Leaving imbalances alone can lead to inflammation of the bowel lining. Some food supplements have been shown to help IBS, so if reducing stress and managing a busy lifestyle has not made a difference, they may be worth a try. The first method to consider is adding live bacteria into your diet. These are called probiotic bacteria and they help colonise the bowel to correct any imbalances that can exist. You should try a strong multistrain dose daily for four weeks, and if it does not help, there are some other methods to consider raising with your doctor. We know that vitamin D deficiency is common, but it may be even more common in people with IBS. We do not know why this is, but it may be a good idea to get tested as deficiency puts you at risk of more serious problems in the bowel and throughout the body. well as sunlight, dietary sources are just as important, for example oily fish such as salmon, or beef liver, mushrooms and egg yolks make good choices. To treat deficiency however, supplements are recommended. Although green tea has not been studied in regards to inflammation during IBS, the active ingredients called polyphenols inside have been helpful in treating inflammation during inflammatory bowel disease. Some people may wish to drink green tea, and others try capsules. Those sensitive to caffeine will need to limit their intake but those on medication interacting with green tea are best not to take any at all. Curcumin is an active compound within turmeric, packed full of polyphenols which have been shown to lead to a 60% reduction in IBS prevalence, including reduced abdominal pain and discomfort. Getting this through the diet is difficult as you would need to have several teaspoons of turmeric everyday, therefore a supplement is more appropriate for most IBS sufferers.
