a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone,<br />
with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. …<br />
It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream<br />
of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to<br />
attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and<br />
be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous<br />
circumstances of birth or position.”<br />
It would be great if everyone could achieve the A.D. no matter what<br />
their race, ethnicity, religious or financial background. That would<br />
be fantastic. We all know this is far from the truth. Trans people of<br />
color have a hard time climbing up that American Dream ladder. They<br />
experience substantial abuse, unlawfulness, hatred, discrimination,<br />
judgment and stereotyping. You can’t expect most poor trans persons<br />
of color to be living the American Dream. First off most of these<br />
people cannot afford their hormone shots or surgeries to transition, if<br />
that is their dream. I feel this is unfair. Everyone deserves to be who<br />
they feel comfortable to be and live the way they want. People who<br />
cast negativity toward trans people of color make it difficult for them<br />
to be themselves and live their own personal American Dream.<br />
Although the American Dream has been redefined many ways, there<br />
is really only one good way to put it. I stand by Paul Krugman when<br />
he states the American Dream is based on perception, on the way<br />
someone imagines how to be successful. Don’t let people define your<br />
A.D.—figure out what it means within you. There is still hope for<br />
the A.D. It will take a lot of time for every American to achieve the<br />
traditional definition of the A.D. But it will not take as long if we want<br />
to accomplish our own personal A.D.<br />
We have to have faith and believe in a greater tomorrow because<br />
with hard work and perseverance, everyone’s personal dream can come<br />
true.<br />
