WHERE TO SHOP
New Town (Nové Město)
Metro: Můstek, Námĕstí Republiky and Národní Třida
Na Příkopĕ, Prague's favorite shopping street begins at the foot of Wenceslas Square
(Václavské Námĕstí) and is lined with lots of mid-range international retailers like Zara, Mango,
Nike, and Benetton, along with plenty of independent shops and places to break for a snack.
The majority of the area is a pedestrian-only thoroughfare that has evolved into a daily parade
of ‘seeing and being seen‘. In the opposite direction, Na Příkopĕ becomes Národní, or National
Street. Anchored by the Tesco department store, this is another strong candidate for bingeshopping,
along with several good art galleries and plenty of interesting architecture.
Josefov
Metro: Staromĕstská
Pařížská, a.k.a. "Paris Street" was laid-out at the turn of the last century with the idea of turning
it into a kind of local Champs Elysée. Top-end international retailers took the bait and this treelined
thoroughfare is now the swankiest stretch in town; home to Louis Vuitton, Hermes,
Francesca Biasia, and the Czech home accessories store, Le Patio. Nearby, on the streets
Dlouhá, Dušni and V Kolkovnĕ is emerging as a fashion district, attracting a clutch of the
country's best-known designers, including Klára Nademlýnská, Tatiana, Timoure et Group,
and Bohéme.
Old Town (Staré Město)
Metro: Staromĕstská and Námĕstí Republiky
Celetná, the main street connecting Old Town Square and Námĕstí Republiky is one of the
most touristed areas in town. Accordingly, shops here are all about gifts, including several
crystal stores. The area between Old Town Square and Charles Bridge (Karlův Most) is riddled
with small, winding streets that contain the city's highest concentration of shops. Stroll along
Jilská, Liliova and Michalská, all the way down to Karoliny Svĕtlé, and you'll discover lots of
wonderful places that most visitors miss.
Malá Strana
Malá Strana is not for destination shopping, but rather a beautiful and busy area full of "impulse
stores" designed to catch buyers unaware. There are a few alternative shops hidden away on
Saská, and some finds amongst the touristy places on Nerudova and, thankfully, there are no
chain stores, only locally-owned and operated shops selling everything from art and music to
marionettes and home fashion.
Mirror Labyrinth on Petřín Hill
Prague 1, Petřínské sady
The Mirror Labyrinth is a very interesting building, something like a miniature Castle and it is
situated on Petřín Hill, next to the Petřín Tower (miniature Eiffel Tower). It is part of the
remains of the Former Prague Exhibition Grounds from 1891 and the interesting thing about it
is that the wooden construction imitates the Gothic part of the fortification in Vyšehrad.
The first Bobsleigh in Prague
Prague 9, 906 Prosecká Street
For those in search of some adrenalin, here is the first bobsleigh track in Prague. It not only
offers 1 km of high speed track with eight loops and other attractions, but the ride is absolutely
safe and can be enjoyed by persons of any age, from the youngest to let’s say “older” and from
tough to sensitive people. Children older then 8 can ride alone, smaller kids can ride
accompanied by one of their parents (each trolley has two seats). The speed of the trolley can
be adjusted using the break lever, or it will adapt by itself in case the speed gets too high.
Rides will be interesting not only by day, but also at sunset, when you can enjoy a breathtaking
view of the illuminated city. In the area you will also find restaurants offering refreshments, a
complete menu and nice selection of wines.
modern building in Vodičkova Street. For this building the theatre received the prestigious
Building of the Year 2002 award and City of Prague Mayor’s Prize for the creation of a unique
space for children’s art activities. At the present the theatre attempts to perform not only for
the children, but also to attract the adults as well and thus the whole family. The dramaturgy
and the hours of the performances have been adjusted to these new objectives. Most children
Best Prague Parks & Playgrounds
If you just want to get out of the crowded tourist areas and leave your kids “unleashed” for a
little while, take a look at the best parks and playgrounds below. They are just a few of the
many options Prague offers you. Feel free to explore them on your own.
Čertovka
A small yet very pleasant park with a playground and sandpit for children at the western end
of the Charles Bridge. It is open every day from 8.00 am to 5.30 pm and the area is fenced off,
so you don’t have to be afraid that your offspring will get lost in the city.
Petřín Hill - Playing with the squirrels
In case you didn’t know what to do to kill some of the ‘little monsters’ energy‘, maybe a walk
up to Petřín Hill would be a good idea. Even if you choose to take the funicular instead (it would
not be a bad idea either), you could any time go and chase the cute squirrels living in the
neighboring trees. They seem to love candy and crackers but are still quite timid to accept
direct contact with their admirers. The huge Rose Park on Petřín Hill is a great place to spend
an unforgettable afternoon or evening in a quiet and beautiful atmosphere. The Rose Park is
unfortunately limited by the seasonal climate in Prague. Even so, winter offers it‘s own
attractions: play in the soft snow or walk along the frozen, white alleys. Even the air is different
in the winter: it’s clearer and fresh. Spring, summer and autumn have their charm of course:
the combinations of colors are simply unforgettable. A park remains a park and has its ways
of looking beautiful and mysterious in every season. Other things to see on Petřín: Mirror
Labyrinth, the Planetarium, the Rose Park.
Dětský Ostrov Playground
Dětský Ostrov translates literally as Children’s Island. It is a perfect place that you never
manage to leave on time. Despite the playground being on an island, it is completely fencedin,
safely separating the children from the water, while the nearby river provides a refreshing
breeze in the hot summer months. There is a stone sink with a tap to drink water from when
you get thirsty, a small pool with a fountain where all the kids dip their feet (and not only that).
There are two parts to the playground. The first is full of a wide range of attractions for younger
kids such as slides: big and small, a carousel, sand pits-always equipped with spades and
buckets and variety of swings. The second part contains courts for volleyball, tennis, petanque
and basic skateboard jumps.
