James Reed
Age 19, Grand Rapids
“One time I was sitting
down and playing and
a random homeless guy
came up to me and asked
me if I wanted money for
playing. I was like no man,
I’m just playing for the hell
of it, I like the music. So he
sat down next to me and
asked if he could play. He
started strumming the craziest
chords I’ve heard in my
life. He was very talented, it
blew me out of the water.
Age 22, Guatemala
“I want to start my own business. Before, I wanted
to be a social worker, but I didn’t like the field. I’m
not from here. I’m from Guatemala, and I want to
go back there and build a school for kids that are
not able to go to school or don’t have the financial
background to go to school. I love to help
people. That’s my goal. I care about others.
“I came here seven years ago. I got a scholarship
to come here. The program was for four years of
high school and four years of college. But after
the first four years, they didn’t have enough
funds. And so they were gonna send me back to
Guatemala. But then luckily for me, my host family
took me in. So they’re taking care of me right
now. I came here for education.”
