Welcome to active-net 2016...
Welcome to the third annual active-net, and a return to our Loughborough
venue which hosted us so successfully last year. Building on the success of the
first two events and listening to feedback from delegates last year we have once
again made some changes to this year’s agenda. We hope you notice the
changes and like them!
This year we have around 30% new delegates, which is essential to any
networking event, and have put together a great educational morning on day
one which we hope you find really interesting and beneficial. We have a great
speaker line up, focusing on some important current issues, and including some
real industry veterans and respected speakers. Many thanks to them for their
support.
We would also like to thank our supporting partners, who have helped us
promote and put together this event, the Senior Managers Network of BUCS,
CIMSPA, CLOA and ukactive. It is great that so many of the industry major
organisations are supportive of what has already become a key industry event.
Finally, we would like to thank our Supplier delegates, without your financial
support this sort of event just cannot happen.
Have a great two days of networking, we hope you make new contacts, develop
new relationships and learn new things.
LUCY HALL
INTRODUCING ACTIVE-NET'S SPONSORED ATHLETE
We are particularly grateful to Leicester-
Shire & Rutland Sport, one of the best
performing CSPs in England, which has
helped secure Karl Brown, our after dinner
speaker for active-net 2016.
LRS’s focus is on ensuring that national sport
and physical activity resources have local reach
and, as such, this year active-net will be
sponsoring local triathlete Lucy Hall. Both Karl
Brown’s talk and our sponsorship of Lucy link
seamlessly to the theme from this year’s panel
with Sport England’s Charles Johnson - hard to
reach communities, sport for the good of all and
supporting potential.
“My Dad introduced me to triathlons
when I was just 8” she said. “I competed
in a fun kids triathlon the day before my
Dad competed in an Olympic triathlon
and I’ve loved it ever since! The pinnacle
of my sporting career would be to
represent and win an Olympic Gold
medal for my country, and I am
extremely grateful to active-net for
supporting me in this mission.”
Known for being one of the fastest swimmers in
the sport, Olympic triathlete Lucy Hall has also
proven herself to be one of the strongest
cyclists too. Aged just 20, she represented
Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games
and went on to make the commonwealth team
for Glasgow 2014, where she broke away on
the bike and led the race on and off before
finishing 11th.
GET INVOLVED
Hall made her senior debut in the ITU World
Triathlon Series in 2011. She has won
European and World medals in Mixed Team
Relay events at all levels, from junior to senior,
including the senior world title in Hamburg in
2014. She is a member of the UK Sport Lottery
funded British Triathlon World Class Podium
Potential Squad based in Leeds.

BROWN
KARL
COACH - ENGLAND U18
HEAD
BASKETBALL TEAM
Introduction to our after Dinner Speaker
International basketball star and head coach of
the England under 18 Men’s Basketball Team,
Karl Brown, will be your after dinner speaker
tonight! The sportsman, who went from inner
city Leicester to America and back again using
sport as his ticket, will discuss his inspiring story
while being interviewed by Gaynor Nash,
Regional Legacy Coordinator for Leicester-Shire
& Rutland Sport.
“I have been a sports fan all of my life
and Basketball has brought me many
fantastic opportunities allowing me to
travel around the world and create a
fantastic network. I am delighted to
be able to attend the event to tell my
story, try and inspire some people
and promote the work I am doing in
Leicester for local young people”
Originally from Leicester, as a teenager Karl
Brown travelled to America to study and play
basketball for Georgia Tech. In 1990, aged
23, Karl helped the college to reach the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Final
Four, the ultimate prize in college basketball in
the States, for the first time in the school's
history. Karl was also the first Englishman to
play in the Final Four.
Since retiring from professional basketball, Karl, who also presents on Sky Sports as
an National Basketball Association (NBA) and British Basketball League (BBL)
specialist, has worked tirelessly in the community and in 2004 set up the Leicester
Warriors Basketball Club.
In partnership with him the club delivers community-based National League
basketball programmes and projects addressing social issues as well as encouraging
participation, such as To the Hoop, which takes young people off the streets and
away from gun and knife crime, Community Cohesion, which aims to bring
communities together, Streetwise, which brings young people into basketball by
delivering coaching in parks and open spaces, as well as mentoring and education in
local school and colleges.

Organisational / Company Profile
The physical activity facilities magazine is for professionals involved in the planning, design,
construction and management of leisure, play and sports facilities.
Sport and active play are playing an increasingly important role in tackling the UK’s physical
inactivity crisis. Children as young as five will be targeted as part of the government’s new strategy
on sport, announced at the end of 2015, which aims to involve more people in sport and fitness.
Physical inactivity is one of the most significant health risks of our age, reaching epidemic levels,
and contributing to an estimated 3.2 million deaths globally every year*
The sea change that is needed to tackle inactivity in both adults and children through regular
exercise means that the play, sports and leisure sectors are undergoing an unprecedented
transformation. With this comes a challenge in innovation, design, development, delivery,
engagement and funding of this new ‘physical landscape’.
Brought to you by Stable Media, the official media event partner for SAPCA, and fully supported by
the API, paf magazine showcases the latest new build and redevelopment schemes along with a
lively mix of news, views and in-depth analysis.
Published four times per year in May, June, September and November. Circulation – 5,000 named
individuals working on active projects including architects, specifiers, contractors, project
managers, park and play officers, local authorities, educational facilities, sports and athletics clubs,
owners, operators and buyers. As an editorially led publication we would welcome your latest case
studies and press releases for editorial consideration.

the technical capabilities of the staff, both new and existing. A specific Apprenticeship programme
was put into place with the authority which covered not only the specific components of the
Apprenticeship but also needs such as social and personal skills of the Apprentices.
Babcock also supported the recruitment of the Apprentices towards this programme and the
success was measurable with a 90% success rate on the scheme, along with customer service
satisfaction scores being 15% higher from customers direct contact with the Apprentices rather than
Organisational / Company Profile
Bonasystems is the UK’s leading provider of specialist floorcare cleaning and anti-slip products,
services and consulting.
Supporting Health & Safety compliance across the leisure sector, Bonasystems’ solutions
significantly reduce the likelihood of slip risk. In a recent survey we found that only 20% of wet
leisure floors achieved HSE safety benchmarks… but 80% could be compliant with correct cleaning
i.e. no up-front costs for new floors or anti-slip treatments.
Given slips are the largest cause of accident in the sector, and in the context of recent changes in
health & safety sentencing guidelines (dramatically raising fine levels), now is the time to better
understand your slip risk and how to mitigate it.
Poor cleanliness, particularly in changing rooms, is the biggest contributor to detractor NPS scores.
Bonasystems’ products can help you to drive up standards and, importantly, save labour costs –
meaning that overall your cleaning costs may well fall.
GYMetrix is the first company in the gym industry to attach discrete wireless sensors to gym
equipment and measure how much the equipment gets used.
We can then work out how to optimise the types, quantities and locations of equipment to maximise
the customers experience and the gyms investment in equipment.
Knowing what customer demand is for gym equipment, before buying the equipment, prevents
buying equipment that will be under-utilised and be a waste of money for operators.
As well as collecting hard data from the sensors we also conduct customer surveys asking
equipment specific questions.
Simply we optimise the gym customers experience and operators’ investment in equipment by
ensuring customers have 'enough equipment of their choice'. Either through adjusting the
'equipment supply' or adjusting their 'demand choices' or a combination of both.
Reference Site Details
In December 2013 Max Associates and Alliance Leisure Services (ALS) undertook a feasibility study
for Ards Borough Council for the re-provision of Ards Leisure Centre.
Prior to developing the design specification, we reviewed current performance, market trends,
demographics, competition and undertook consultation. We used this information to determine
current and anticipated needs of a new facility including both key sports facilities and other more
commercial activity that would drive overall usage and income and reduce the on-going subsidy
required for the Centre. The facility mix we proposed included; 25m pool and learner pool 6 court,
sports hall, 100 station gym, multi-purpose meeting rooms, urban Gym – (adventure play and
gymnastics features that make traditional soft play more accessible and exciting to a wider
audience), boutique 10 pin bowling, spa and health suite, catering and ancillary facilities.
We worked with ALS to develop an innovative design that not only met demands for traditional
facilities (swimming and sports hall) but also included indoor leisure entertainment facilities that
would draw typical ‘non-users’ into the centre. By adding the more commercial activities the new
facility is projected to achieve operational savings in excess of £400k per annum, whilst ensuring the
capital costs remained within the budget envelope.
The Council is currently at build stage with it due to open in 2017.

Stages Cycling has many stories to tell…
We’re proud to tell the story of how our unknown brand, Stages Cycling, blew the category of power
measurement wide open in launching the Stages Power meter for bicycles in 2012. Less than a
year later, Team Sky rode this device—that directly measures a bicycle rider’s pedalling—to victory
in countless races. But the real legacy that was created is a foundation so deeply rooted in the
people Stages Cycling has handpicked. That’s our favourite story to tell, we are cyclists, inside and
out. Our team designed the very first Johnny G Spin bike nearly 20 years ago and has never
stopped since.
We want to tell you how our brand can help your business succeed with a different proposition
coming from a genuine cycling specialist; The only indoor cycling partner that has a recognizable
