St. Catherine Statue
Vandalized During Holy Week
by Renee Plant
On Good Friday,
March 25, a sacred
day for Catholics, the
Virgin Mary statue
was vandalized outside
St. Catherine of Siena
Parish in Norwood.
This was the first of
three similar events in
the Boston area that
occured during the
holy week.
Following the incident,
statues at St.
Margaret Parish in
Burlington and St.
Mary’s Church in Billerica
were also defaced,
prompting questions
from police and residents
about whether
the acts were connected.
“We are aware of the incidents
in Burlington and Billerica,
but I do not believe we will find
them to be done by the same
person,” Norwood Police Chief
William G. Brooks III said.
While the timing and nature
of the vandalism is thought to
be coincidental, the Norwood
statue was hit with graffiti, while
the statues in Burlington and
Billerica were found with their
heads and hands severed. There
was also a symbol scrolled across
the bottom of the statue at St.
Catherine’s.
Distracted driving is any activity
that diverts a person’s attention
driving. All distractions endanger
By now, everyone has heard
that driving while distracted is
dangerous. The National Safety
Council reports that cell phone use
while driving leads to 1.6 million
crashes each year. Even worse are
the statistics about texting while
driving. Studies have been
done that quantify the
reaction times of people
who text and drive. For
example, according to a
study by the Virginia Tech
Transportation Institute,
sending or receiving a text
takes a driver’s eyes off the
road for an average of 4.6
seconds, the equivalent of
driving blindfolded at 55-
mph for the length of an
entire football field.
It is a growing trend
and a national epidemic
that is quickly becoming
one of the country’s top
killers.
DISTRACTED
continued from page 1
One Norwood resident knows
this all too well. Tom Brannelly
lost his 24 year old daughter Katie
in 2013 to a distracted driver.
“She was crossing the street in
the center of Norwood on March
2nd, 2012, with her boyfriend
Dom and her friend Kerri," Brannelly
said. "Dom was able to push
Kerri out of the way, but he and
Katie were hit.”
Katie sustained a traumatic
brain injury and after several
weeks in the Intensive Care Unit
was transferred to a rehabilitation
center, where she was in a
minimal awareness coma; a shell
of the vibrant young woman who
was due to graduate from Bridgewater
State University cum laude
and who wanted to spend her life
helping children.
“For 15 months, my wife Valerie,
our children Marty and Janeen,
and her boyfriend Dom
(who has since made a full recovery)
visited Katie every day, spending,
10 to 12 hours a day talking to
her, encouraging her, looking for
any little sign of progress.” Brannelly
said. “She became our whole
life.”
But, Katie ultimately lost her
life due to complications from the
injuries sustained in the motor
vehicle crash. Evidence later revealed
that the 25 year-old driver,
a Suffolk law student, had either
received or sent eight text messages
before the crash, including
one minute before, and was likely
texting at the time.
“Why?”, Brannelly asked.
“What was so important that required
eight texts from Boston to
Norwood–that’s a text every three
or four minutes. The woman was
not convicted.” He believes it is a
gross injustice.
Brannelly continues to grieve.
The pain is permanently etched
on his face. He says he visits Katie’s
gravesite every day, sometimes
three times a day.
“The pain does not go away,”
Brannelly said.
Brannelly has been very active
in trying to put an end to distracted
driving and is determined that
Katie’s death serve some positive
purpose. In December of 2015,
Brannelly was contacted by Representative
Cory Atkins and asked
to speak on the issue of distracted
driving. Atkins is the sponsor of a
bill that would ban hand-held cell
phone use while behind the wheel.
Simple Steps We Can Take
For Safer Driving
Do your part to put an end to distracted driving. Below is EndDD’s checklist of simple steps you
can take to avoid being a distracted driver and to protect yourself, your friends, family and others from
preventable crashes.
1. Drive without reading or sending texts, snapchatting, using the internet, Facebook or social media
of any kind.
2. Call/text before I start driving to let parents, friends and others know when I’ll arrive.
3. Wait to text or call others until they have stopped driving.
4. Pull over to a safe location to check texts, social media, or listen to voice mail.
5. Deputize my passenger when I am driving to text or make calls for me.
6. When alone, turn my cell phone off before starting to drive.
7. Stop texting, or end phone conversations with others once I learn they are driving.
8. Pull over to a safe location or wait until I am finished driving to eat or apply make-up.
9. Pull over to a safe location or wait until I am finished driving to adjust music, scroll through I-Pods,
I -phones or similar devices.
10. When being driven by a distracted driver ask the driver to drive safer.
11. As a passenger, share the responsibility for arriving safely with my driver and offer help so my
driver does not drive distracted.
When it was his time to speak,
he held up an enlarged photo of
Katie and said: “I’m here because
she’s not.” He wanted legislators
to be able to put a face to the issue
of distracted driving.
Massachusetts already has a
law banning texting while driving,
but many drivers continue
to do it while behind the wheel,
often hiding their phones in their
laps. Advocates for a hands-free
phone option say it will improve
public safety.
“It might also help police enforce
the current laws,” Brannelly
said.
But Brannelly said he believes
the Legislature should go one step
further and ban all cell phone use
in vehicles while they are moving.
He has been in regular contact
with Jeff Larason, the State’s
Highway Safety Director, who
has been working on the problem.
Larason helps keep him informed
of Massachusetts initiatives aimed
at mitigating the problem.
Larason’s division teamed up
with state and local police in more
than 140 cities and towns in a
statewide crackdown of distracted
driving for three weeks in April,
during Distracted Driving Month,
as part of a national campaign
called “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.”
Larason has said this problem
is not limited to teenage drivers. In
fact, according to public data, the
preponderance of distracted driving
fatalities from 2010 to 2013
were caused by adults between the
ages of 45 and 64.
Brannelly works tirelessly to
keep Katie’s memory alive in
the hope that another family will
not have to go through what his
family has endured. He asks that
people go to the EndDD site
http://www.http://www.enddd.
org/end-distracted-driving/ established
by Joel Feldman, whose
21-year-old daughter was also
killed by a distracted driver.
“There is a great deal of information
there that might just help
save someone’s life,” Brannelly
said.
Brannelly also hopes to establish
a second scholarship at
Norwood High School in Katie’s
name. Donations to the Katie
Brannelly Scholarship fund can be
sent to Norwood Bank, 11 Central
stating the department will
continue to seek out the culprits.
"We are actively investigating
this disturbing crime and will continue
to do so until we find those
responsible," he said in a press release.
At St. Catherine’s, the church
continues to mourn the attack,
but are working toward a resolution.
In its weekly bulletin, Father
Donohoe expressed the that
church and its members were
New England
“saddened and dismayed” by the
vandalism, but noted it is the “hallmark
of Christianity” to remain
resolved in faith and to pray for
the persons responsible.
Father Donohoe also stated
that the outpouring of support has
been uplifting, and that the church
is working with various agencies to
restore the statue.
“Local and out of state contractors
have volunteered their
skills to help restore the statue,”
Father Donohoe wrote. “Numerous
contributions, from little
children to the Norwood Police
Association, have poured in to
help in the restoration. Clearly, no
Join the Food Pantry Team in Walk for Hunger
by Bella Caggiano
This year's 48th Annual Project
Bread Walk for Hunger will
be held on Sunday, May 1, and
Norwood will again be represented
by the Norwood Food Pantry
team. Last year, the Norwood
squad raised nearly $8,000, an accomplishment
that ranked them
in the top 10 fund-raising teams!
Norwood residents are invited to
join the team or donate to support
their neighbors and thousands of
people throughout Massachusetts.
“This year, we’re hoping to do
even better,” says Team Captain
Nick Campagna, who has already
experienced 32 walks and logged
640 miles under his belt.
If 20 miles was too ambitious
in past years, volunteers may be
enticed to participate this year as
the walk has been cut in half to 10
miles due to construction in Watertown.
Walking the entire course
is available, however, contributors
can accept pledges for whatever
length they are comfortable, even
a mile or two will help the cause!
Buses will be on hand along route
intervals to take walkers back to
the starting point.
Established in 1969, the Walk
for Hunger is the oldest continual
pledge walk in the country. Over
40,000 are expected to take part in
the fundraiser this year.
If interested parties encounter
a scheduling problem for May 1,
there is also the option of signing
up as a Virtual Walker, raising
money through phone calls and
emails.
Tax deductible donations are
also taken to support the Norwood
Pantry team in person or online.
Feeding the Norwood community
is a year-long mission. Donations
are accepted each week at
St., Thursday mornings, 8:30-9:30
a.m. or Saturday mornings, 7:30-
volunteers are on hand to assist in
carrying bags and boxes.
Project Bread supports a wide
variety of programs across Massachusetts,
including community-based
meal programs, early
childhood and school nutrition
initiatives, creating better access
to fresh local food resources, and
more. Last year alone, organization
funded organizations to provide
61 million meals to hungry
NATURE CALLS – Dog Park Hits Road Block
By Amy Beaumont
Dogs and their owners in Norwood
will have to wait yet again
for a dedicated dog park. There
was a glimmer of hope last summer
when the Norwood Dog
Park Committee polled residents
in the Ellis Avenue neighborhoods
and found a very positive
response there. In fact, out of the
approximately 140 houses polled,
only 3 opposed the idea – but that
was enough to stop development
of the dog park in that location.
While the Norwood Dog Park
Committee had considered five
potential sites in town, it seems
that just a few opposed residents
can halt plans at any one of them.
After the Ellis Avenue location
was eliminated, the committee
shifted their focus to the Coakley
Middle School as a potential site,
since plans for an ice rink there
have since been dismissed. The
committee has hopes that a dog
park could be developed there,
but realizes neighboring support is
still needed. While discour-aged,
committee member Mark Rano
remains somewhat optimistic that
a dog park for the town can eventually
become reality somewhere
– with more support..
“When we started polling, we
didn’t think we needed a unanimous
vote,” Rano ex-plained. “A
mere 25-30 phone calls or emails
of support in favor of a dog park
to the Board of Selectmen could
easily change the course for
residents and dogs. We have the
town’s approval and the funding,
we just need a place to put it.”
The up side to the Ellis Avenue
location is timing. A dog park at
this location could become available
to residents in the very near
future. But committee members
who have dedicated their time and
effort are growing weary-many in
favor of a dog park in town have
been at it since 2006.
Committee members are now
looking towards a new location
where opposition would not be
a factor. The new housing project
slated for the Upland Woods
area on Washington Street currently
has a dog park in the plans
for those new resi-dents. Hopefully,
and as suggested by town
officials, those plans can include,
as a contingency, expanding the
dog park to allow any Norwood
resident to walk their dog there.
The down side to this location is
the timeline. The project is easily
two to three years away, and is not
a definite that it will even
be completed at all. What
also cannot be overlooked
is the funding. Norwood
would not incur any costs
asso-ciated with a dog
park and funding approval
has already been
appropriated through
The Stanton Foundation.
The Stanton Foundation
provides grants to towns
in Massachusetts solely
for the development of dog parks.
The grants cover up to 100% of
the design costs and 90% of construction
costs. Additionally, annual
follow up capitol grants for
repair and improvement, equal
up to 5% of construction costs,
are available for five years following
the opening of such parks. To
most residents in town, given the
available funding and the more
than 1200 registered dogs, it seems
a no-brainer to move forward with
a dog park.
But it simply comes down to
support–it’s either there or it’s not.
In the meantime, letting Fido off
the leash is still illegal and residents
are still stuck heading out of town
to let their dogs run free. But as always
is the case, change starts with
one person. In the case of a dog
park, just a few dozen supporters
would find the Board of Selectmen
reconsidering sites like Ellis
Avenue. Dog owners and those
in support of a dog park here in
Norwood can call the Board of
Selectmen at 781-762-1240. For
Yoga and Physical Therapy
By John Vacovec
Physical Therapist and CEO
of Physical Therapy and
Sports Rehab
Most people don't think of
yoga as something that is connected
to physical therapy. However,
yoga is an effective way to
manage a variety of conditions,
maintaining flexibility and fostering
movement. Yoga can be an
important addition to physical
therapy to relieve pain and aid in
reducing the risk of injury.
Yoga is more than a means
of relieving stress. It does relieve
stress, but it is also an effective way
to reduce high blood pressure, improve
circulation and stimulate the
immune system, and ease the pain
in a variety of chronic conditions.
Yoga can be performed by individuals
of any age and is particularly
effective for people with
neurological conditions and joint
disease. It promotes better sleep
and is beneficial for those engaged
in programs for anger management,
smoking cessation, and
substance abuse. Yoga combined
with physical therapy is a complete
wellness solution. It is beneficial for
rehabilitation, improving balance,
coordination, and motor skills.
Yoga Spans Centuries
Yoga has been practiced for
centuries and experts in different
parts of the world have made
minor modifications to the execution
of yoga. However, the goal remains
the same – to align the body
and mind. Specific physical positions
are used to benefit posture
and promote breathing control.
One of the lesser known advantages
of yoga is its ability to affect
mental and emotional health.
Yoga helps relieve anxiety and
depression following injuries, during
rehabilitation and prolonged
recovery times.
A physical therapist can identify
and improve range of motion,
strength, stability and posture
using specific strategies and techniques.
Combining Physical
Therapy and Yoga
Depending upon the individual
needs, yoga can be combined with
skilled physical therapy. It is effective
as a tool to assist patients in
monitoring and improving a sense
of well-being.
As a combination, yoga and
physical therapy can address an
individual's medical condition,
injury or dysfunction. The result
is improved body awareness and
flexibility with a boost in balance
and coordination
Ask your physical therapists if
combination therapy such as yoga
and physical therapy is right for
you. Our goal is the same as yours
- to help you live a happy, healthy
and productive life. Physical Therapy
Make a Living Out of What you Love
David Kaye, owner of David
Kaye's Kaye-Nine Training
School, can happily make this
statement every day. And at this
point in his life and career, he is
eager to share his exciting and
inspiring experiences with others
craving a fulfilling career.
Kaye has been training dogs
and volunteering his time at shelters
since 1986. In 2012, due to
circumstances out of his control,
he established a personal plea: to
make a living from his passion for
dogs. That turn in his career resulted
in a pivotal moment in both
his professional and personal life.
"It shouldn't take a recession,
a natural catastrophe or near
death experience to build your
own dream instead of somebody
else's," Kaye said.
His story may sound familiar.
In 2009, Kaye found himself involuntarily
invited to the club of
laid off employees while working
as Director of Seminar Systems
for Jackson National Life. During
his six years at the company,
he created an informative seminar
unit and traveled the country
training small businesses how to
brand and market their organizations
and services.
"It's never what happens to
you," Kaye said. " It's always how
you react to it."
Fast forward to today, and Kaye
operates a successful dog training
company, and while many may
not initially understand how a dog
training business and inspirational
speaker can relate, Kaye would
say otherwise. Blending a passion
with life experiences can be done,
and it can be done well. The secret
(which he enthusiastically shares),
lies within unveiling one's skills
acquired and applying them in a
new direction. It takes drive and
ambition, but the groundwork is
there and ready for the taking.
"I have done so well for simple
reasons," Kaye said. "A good work
ethic, commitment to excellence
and learning from the best. It's not
only being good at what you do,
but how you talk about it that creates
successful brand."
Now comfortably established
with an incredible reputation in
his field, Kaye is merging his corporate
and small business background
to teach others again-this
time as an independent inspirational
speaker.
"If you learned well from your
life experiences, it will be there
when you need it," Kaye said.
"You should always be
trying to grow. Either you
grow and are learning or
you are dying."
Kaye directly applies
his success in branding,
marketing and sales with
his dog training business.
In addition to teaching
others how to build a great
following through social
media and referrals, his energizing
and educational
presentations guide his audience
to ask and address
seven important questions to successfully
build their brand.
1. Who are you?
2. What do you do?
3. What makes you different?
4. Why should I do business
with you?
5. Why do you do what you do?
6. How do you do what you do?
7. Who do you do it for?
Kaye also delivers a very
unique experience to his seminars
with surprising twists. For many
groups, his dogs are an important
component to assist with demonstrating
his success as well as props
to exhibit the significance of one's
passion.
"My love of dogs inspires me to
inspire others," Kaye said.
Kaye is now on the road again
through Kaye Consulting Group
sharing his varied knowledge to
groups of individuals looking to
tap into what motivates them and
makes them happy. Those speaking
engagements are relatable to
individuals looking to tap into that
passion or existing groups working
in areas to create or enhance their
presence online and through networking.
His extraordinary talents
as a proven business professional
and gifted speaker and teacher
have helped his audience produce
appointments, increase sales and
achieve branding success.
Oh, My Aching Head!
Migraine headaches are all
too common, affecting over 37
million people each year. Lasting
several hours to several days,
these headaches can be incredibly
debilitating and greatly impact
the quality of life of the
migraine sufferer. These headaches
are very misunderstood
and have many different causes
or triggers which make them very
difficult to treat. The symptoms
vary from aura (squiggly lines) to
unrelenting pain, to nausea and
vomiting, to sensitivity to light
and sound.
Sara suffered with migraines
for the past 20 years. It got to the
point where she was forced to
accept her quality of life would
mean missing out on special
events, get-togethers, days at
work and her children’s sports
and school events. A friend told
Sara about the Holistic Center
at Bristol Square, where she was
treated by Drs. Bien and Goldstein.
After several months of
care, Sara is blissfully migraine
free. The Doctors helped Sarah
to identify the triggers that were
aggravating her headaches and
remove them from her life. The
most significant trigger was the
TERMITE DAMAGE
Because termites, carpenter ants, and certain types of beetles are responsible for more than $5
billion in property damage annually, homeowners might expect that this type of destruction is covered
by their homeowners insurance policies. The fact is, however, that standard homeowners insurance
generally protects against perils that are sudden and accidental. While termite and other pest infestations
pose an insidious threat that occurs over time, they are preventable with proper maintenance. With
this in mind, homeowners are urged to make regular inspections of their properties, inside and out, for
signs of infestation and damage. The sooner destructive pest colonies are identified and eradicated, the
more likely wood structures can be spared damage.
Community Support
Lieutenant Benedetti and Officer S. Miller walked into the local
Starbucks last month while working their evening shift. A group of
women were taking up one of the tables, knitting. One of the ladies
came up to the counter and insisted she pay for the officer's coffee.
Despite polite refusals, she pre-vailed. She and all of her friends
then thanked them for their service and the entire coffee shop gave
a standing ovation.
While we will never ask for such praise, we are certainly thankful
for our community and their endless efforts to support us!
Norwood’s Art in Bloom A Success
By Donna Lane
The George H. Morse House
once again opened its lovely facility
to host the Norwood Evening
Garden Club’s 12th Art in Bloom
event. Student artists from Norwood
and Walpole High Schools
provided artwork and sculpture
using many different media resources
while members of the garden
club put forth their best efforts
at interpreting them.
Susan Kaplan, past president
of Beth Shalom Garden Club in
Needham and owner of Highgate
Floral Designs has visited Norwood’s
Art in Bloom for the past
six years. She texted a message as
she was leaving the Morse House
saying, “Excellent! Art and florals
get better every year.”
Most garden club members
primarily consider themselves
“dirt gardeners” and aren’t comfortable
doing flower arrangements,
especially those that will
be on public display. Lorraine
Devine, past president of the club,
sums up how many of the designers
feel.
“It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a
bit nerve wracking because you
want to do a good job for the student
and you don’t want to make
a fool of yourself,” Devine said.
“It has also been a great learning
experience getting to know about
the different flowers and greens
that are available, and how you
condition them so they last as long
as possible. This is my sixth year
doing Art in Bloom, and I think I
finally got the hang of it this year.”
Nancy Costa, Chair of Art
in Bloom 2016, said she couldn’t
be more pleased with this year’s
event.
“Nearly 300 people viewed the
displays over the weekend, and
two classes of students from the
middle school viewed the displays
on Monday," Costa said. "They
are our future artists. I want them
to get excited about participating
in the future. I guess it’s the
teacher in me.”
Students were asked to look at
the art and floral pieces and focus
on the textures of each. After they
looked at each piece, they were
to select the one that exhibited
the greatest match in terms of
drawing and floral texture. What
emerged was very interesting. The
two classes were evenly
split in their choices.
Many gravitated to
a piece that had been
composed on a map,
and which used pieces
of wire to delineate a
bridge. The piece was
done by Emily Schneider
of Walpole. Color
was limited to subtle
greens and pale yellows,
melding into blue. The
depth of the composition
was striking. Students
noted that they liked the
fact that wire was carefully added
and that everything was not simply
painted on. It was not an easy
piece to interpret. Yours truly had
the honor.
The second piece most-selected
by the students was by Macy
Chutoransky, of Walpole, whose
pastel conch shell received many
visitors’ compliments. When the
young artist visited the exhibit,
she was quite taken with the flowers
used by club president, Tracy
Firth, to interpret her piece.
“I love the selection of flowers
… and the choice of container …
and how she captured the curves
and the feeling of my piece.”
Orthodontics
for every
Smile
Chutoransky said.
In contrast to Chutoransky’s
soft colors, Norwood artist Rory
Lake submitted a striking landscape,
rich with strong pigments
of orange, yellow, green, red and
a range of blues. Whether bold or
muted, did visitors have favorites?
Without a doubt. But the predominant
comments of the weekend
were about the wealth of talent
housed under the Morse House
roof by artists and designers alike.
“Many thanks to Dale Day
and members of the George H.
Morse House Committee, Laurie
Meade-McGrory, Visual Arts
Department Chair of Norwood
High School, Sandra Allison, Visual
Arts Department Head for
Walpole High School, all of the
talented high school artists, all participating
garden club designers,
my Art in Bloom Committee and
all who visited from the community,”
Costa said. “Without you,
this event would not have been
possible.”
Local Letter Carriers Help Stamp Out Hunger
by Bella Caggiano
Helping feed the hungry is as
easy as mailing a letter...from the
comfort of your own home. On
Saturday, May 14, letter carriers
will be picking up non-perishable
food on their routes as part of the
24th Annual Letter Carriers’ Food
Drive.
“This is the largest one-day
food drive in the country,” Jack
Curran , Norwood, Vice-President
of Local 742 of the National
Association of Letter Carriers
(AFL-CIO) and Food Drive Coordinator
said. “Last year in Norwood
and Westwood alone, our
members collected over 16,000
pounds of food – about eight tons
– to help the hundreds of families
here who are struggling with hunger.
And this year, we’re hoping to
do even better.”
On this day, when Norwood
residents leave marked bags of
non-perishable food by their mailbox
in the morning, mail carriers
will pick up the packages during
their regular route and take them
to a central sorting location.
“All types of non-perishable
food – from peanut butter and
jelly to soup and cereal…canned
vegetables and tomatoes to cake
and brownie mix…baked beans
to boxed meals like Hamburger
Helper and Pasta Roni – are welcome,"
Bill Discepolo, Stock and
Rotation Manager at the Norwood
pantry said. “But right now,
we especially need Spam, beef
stew, solid white tuna, and other
canned meat; canned fruit and
bottled juice; and canned pasta
like Chef Boyardee. The only
requirement is that all cans and
boxes must be new and in good
condition. Anything outdated or
opened has to be thrown away for
health reasons.”
Norwood is one of 10,000 cities
and towns across America taking
part in the Letter Carriers’ Food
Drive. The national effort began
in 1992 and letter carriers, represented
by the National Association
of Letter Carriers, postal employees,
volunteers, and sponsoring
organizations, have delivered 1.4
billion pounds of donated food to
regional food banks and local food
pantries, including almost 71 million
pounds in 2015.
“We’re proud to be part of this
powerful effort to help our neighbors
in need,” Curran said. Right
now, one out of every seven Americans
is not sure where their next
meal is coming from – and one
out of every five children. There
are seniors and veterans right here
in town who have to choose between
paying their rent and utilities
and buying food. We see the
need every day on our routes, and
we feel this is a great way to lend
a hand.”
“The Letter Carriers’ Drive
is probably the single most important
day of the year for us,”
Claudia Mackey, one of the pantry’s
two recently elected Assistant
Executive Directors, said. “We depend
on it to get through the lean
summer months when donations
always dip because people are
busy or away on vacation – and
into the fall.
“The people of Norwood have
always responded to the Letter
Carriers’ Drive with a huge outpouring
of generosity,” Assistant
Executive Director Nancy Maier
added. “And we thank each and
every one of you – carriers and
donors alike – for caring and sharing.”
Any donation, large or small
is greatly appreciated. So look
through your pantry or pick up a
few items at the grocery store and
place them in a marked bag by the
mailbox the morning of Saturday,
FACT: A large majority of cats and kittens brought to rescues or released to the outdoors
actually come from loving homes. In many cases the owners have to make a choice between
where they live and having pets. This is a terrible decision to have to make.
It is very sad when we humans separate pets from their people but it happens all the time.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE ALLOWED EVERY PET YOU OWN IF YOU RENT OR LIVE
WITH PARENTS. It’s the responsible thing to do for our four-legged family members. Do not
take it for granted that a friendly landlord will allow your wishes to own multiple pets come true!
Diesel
Meet Diesel:
Diesel is a black and tan, tiger kitty who likes to just lay
around and be lazy! You can’t help but love this mature, settled,
8-year-old cat that enjoys the company of people (young
and old) and likes to be around other cats. No worries if you
have to leave him alone sometimes, he will make himself quite
comfortable. You will probably find him doing some Garfieldlounging
in a nice sunny spot. In addition to his awesome personality,
he is a very handsome cat! Diesel’s life was recently
turned upside down when his owners were told
they had to get rid of him and his housemates
by their landlord. It was a sad day for the family
and even sadder for him and his friends. He was
very much a part of his human family and was
loved dearly, he will be missed.
Meet Lily:
We are sad to say that Lily
was one of our adopted felines,
happy to welcome her back!
This almost three-year-old, orange,
tiger colored, female kitty
also resided with Diesel and has
been happy for over 2 years in
this welcoming home. Lily particularly
loves to play with other
cats and being in the company
of people, so she would do best Lily
in a home where she is not
alone for long periods of time.
An interesting fact about orange kitties…in the feline world 80 out of 100 orange cats will be
male as compared to 20 out of that same 100 being female. To say Lily is 20 in a hundred would
be a true tid-bit! But to many, she is 1 in a million.
PET CORNER
Meet Catalina:
Catalina is a beautiful, young, tortoiseshell kitty. She had a tough start out on the streets
behind a fire station, living day-by-day not knowing who to trust. She finally found her way into
a colony fed by Bay State Animal Cooperative volunteers and soon she trusted these care givers.
Catalina’s owners never claimed her after a search for them. In her foster home she loved
sitting in the sun and lounging on the bed. Soon she was ready to move to the Petco Adoption
Center in Norwood where she has a
better chance to meet more perspective
owners. This has been a bit trau-
Catalina
matic for her but she is coming right
along and before we know it she will
welcome the attention of many visitors
we are sure. Once Catalina gets
to know you, she is quite friendly and
sweet. New situations are stressful for
her but patience and kindness will
bring out her good qualities.
Got a New Puppy?
We are approaching the time of year when families consider getting new pet additions to
their families…with this great responsibility comes fun, memories and friendships that will last
forever. As part of your new venture any rescue cannot say enough how important proper training
is for your new puppy! A well-adjusted puppy will be happy and so will the entire family. As
a veterinary technician student myself I have learned that a puppy’s critical socialization time is
between 10 and 14 weeks of age. What better time to safely, within a controlled environment,
expose your vaccinated puppy to an array of stimuli ranging from other dogs, adults, kids, men,
woman, variety of skin colors, playful noises, toys, activity and positive re-enforcement….this is
what you can get from your Petco Dog Training classes. Bay State Animal Cooperative’s own
dedicated volunteer and board member, Jen Rose will be running classes at the Norwood Petco
Store starting in May. Jen is certified and has shown dogs in professional obedience dog shows.
Jen is an experienced, patient, respected animal advocate and we support her efforts to help new
pet owners become happy pet owners.
Contact Jen at Petco 781 762 9000, $119 for 6-weeks, 1 hour a week, for dogs as young
as 9 weeks of age. Classes start in May, register now. Puppy classes teach and expand on basic
dog commands and behaviors. Good Citizen Classes, Agility and Rally classes are also offered.
Inquire today and make your new family member a welcomed member of your home and the
community!!!!!
Say NO to the Barn Babies at Norwood Day!
We have presented this to you before but now we are seeking action. Before any more baby
animals are exposed to the many excessive noises, handling and external conditions for OVER
8 hours for human entertainment please speak up and be heard. Please either email us at info@
baystateanimals.org, contact the Norwood Selectman at selectmen@norwoodma.gov or stop
by the Petco adoption center and sign our petition to exclude this un-necessary event from our
Norwood Day! Efforts to remove this event through the Norwood Day Committee has been disregarded.
Additionally, requests to verify vaccine histories and prevention of potential zoonotic
diseases (animal to human transmitted diseases) that could be of concern through this venture
have yet to be addressed by the Norwood Day Committee Director. For
more details, feel free to reach out to Marcia at info@baystateanimals.org.
Common Myth
Many cats, stray, free-roaming and even owned, will show a type
of affection to the person who feeds them. However, in the freeroaming,
un-socialized world this affection is too often confused as
a desire to be adopted into a human home. Though we wish for the
day that all cats are safe inside with loving owners who entertain
them and love them furrr-eve,r the realty is there are still many unsocialized
kitties that are better left in the environment they have
become comfortable in, with caring feeders and warm, safe shelters.
Seek advice regarding what to do for free-roaming, un-socialized
(feral) cats you may come across in your yard, place of employment
or local businesses you patronize.
CONTACT US: Reach out to Bay State Animal Cooperative, INC. if you need pet
care assistance, are surrendering a loved one, are seeking some advice or want to add a fury
feline friend to your family. You can reach us at info@baystateanimals.org or check out
our website at www.baystateanimals.org or on FB at facebook.com/BSAC09. Visit our
adoptable cats at the Norwood-Petco Adoption Center also!
Out and About
Hope Eternal
Things happen in the city. And
quite honestly, and unfortunately
it’s expected. Fences between
neighbors are high, crime rates
even higher. It’s the nature of the
beast.
But here in suburbia, especially
Norwood, where I’ve hung my
hat for many years now, certain
things just don’t happen. Or so I
thought.
Recently, Norwood made
news, and not because of its
charitable contributions to other
townsfolk, or commitment to
community. But because of a
dastardly deed that was committed
on the eve of Good Friday.
On one of Catholics’ most Holy
Days, a crime was committed
under cloak of night.
Someone vandalized a statue
of The Blessed Mother-spray
painting the holy symbol with
black paint. I’m hoping the person
that did this now has an even
darker black mark-on his soul. For
those of us that believe in Hell,
well, I’m pretty sure this perpetrator
has a one way ticket, but I
digress.
This offended me not only as
a Catholic (admittedly not a great
one, not even a good one by many
standards), but merely as a human
being.
By Dawn C. Fitzgerald
Why? What is the point of
doing such a thing; something
so disgustingly disrespectful and
hateful?
Is that the perpetrator hates
Catholics? Hates statues? Hates
Saints? The name Mary? How
does this type of hatred begin?
How does one live their life with
such hatred? Most importantly,
how does this type of hatred end?
Recently, there have been similar
stories in the news. Knocking
down grave stones, Swastikas and
racial slurs found on churches
and temples.
Why? I’m assuming to cause
damage and hurt to those that
worship in churches and temples.
To continue spreading the message
of hate.
I always thought, “Not in my
town.” And, “something like
that would never happen in Norwood.”
But it did.
Looking back weeks later,
maybe we can all learn from this
experience, and from our town’s
response to it.
Instead of the hate being
spread, flowers were placed at
the feet of the now cleaned statue
of Mary.
People came out in droves. Not
to see the damage, but to repair it.
They replaced the ugliness with
something beautiful. They came
together to support one another,
where there was once hatred, love
now blooms.
I do not understand, nor do I
condone, this type of hatred for
my fellow man-his religious beliefs
and differences.
In spite of the disgusting
behavior showed by the cowardly
criminals, hope shined like a beacon
of light-for all to see.
And that’s why I love
this town. Because people showed
their true spirit and banded together
to fix it. To support not
only the Catholic community, but
our community as a whole. To
show all that this type of hatred
and intolerance will not be tolerated
here. To squash the hate.
Because of those generous souls,
where there is once hate, there is
now a testament of love.
Norwood Sports
Sean Mellen
by Christopher Tremblay
Norwood tri-sport athlete
Sean Mellen enjoys participating
in hockey, baseball and football,
but he admits, it’s the spring sport
that brings this high school senior
the most pleasure. The Mustang
pitcher will continue his favored
sport in college next year where
he has been awarded a full scholarship
to pitch for the Huskies of
Northeastern.
“I love all three sports because
they are all so different and each
offers something unique,” the
Norwood athlete said. “Baseball, I
would have to say, is number one.
I love the game and realized it the
very first time that I picked up a
baseball. It was a sport that you
could go out with just a handful of
friends and have fun.”
Mellen, like most youngsters,
quickly gravitated toward Little
League baseball around the age
of four. When he first encountered
the game the now high school senior
loved to pitch, but like everyone
else played every position on
the field. As a freshman, he played
the outfield and pitched, but during
his sophomore campaign, he
settled on strictly pitching.
Norwood
Stingrays Award
The Norwood Aquatics Club is granting a $500 award to
a graduating Norwood senior. The student must have been
a member of the Norwood Stingrays.
Application are due Monday, May 2. Mail to: Norwood
Stingrays Award, c/o 31 Peabody Rd., Norwood, MA
02062.
“Being one of
three sophomores
that made the varsity
team I figured the
only way to crack
the lineup would be
to pitch, especially
on a team with junior
and senior leadership,”
Mellen said.
“I took my turn on
the mound although
it wasn’t all that often
(maybe 25-30 innings)
as we had two
great senior pitchers
and another junior
as well. I didn’t mind
it; I just wanted to
get on the field.”
Although he
didn’t find himself on the field
all that much as a sophomore, he
was grateful for the experience as
Norwood defeated New Bedford
4-3 to win the Division 1 South
Championship, then took out Andover
to advance to the state title
game. Unfortunately, Norwood
eventually fell to Leominster. Last
year the Mustangs repeated as Division
I South Champions with a
9-3 win over Mansfield and then
went on to win the Division 1
State Championships with wins
over Chelmsford and St Peter
Marian.
During the state title run, Mellen
got his share of time on the
mound with three starts, including
the championship contest, and
two trips out of the bullpen.
“It was an honor to start the
championship game, especially
with so many great pitchers on this
team,” Mellen said. “I just wanted
to go out there and have fun. The
offense made it that much easier
scoring 8 runs. It will be something
that I always remember.”
The 6’3”, 200 lb. pitcher can
throw between 86 and 92 mph
and with four pitches keeps the
opposition’s batters off balance.
“Being a three sport athlete,
he can run,” Norwood Baseball
Coach Kevin Igoe said. “When he
takes to the mound, I don’t have
a worry in the world, I know that
he’s going to go out there and get
the win. As an All State player as
a junior, I expect nothing less from
him this year.”
Mellen punched out 117 batters
last season in 64 innings; an
astounding 1.8 strikeouts per inning,
but the senior hurler doesn’t
consider himself a strikeout
pitcher.
“I don’t go out there trying
to strike batters out, I’m just trying
to throw strikes so that I can
get ahead in the count,” the lefthanded
pitcher said. “If I can
get ahead in the count then I can
give myself the advantage. If they
strikeout, they strikeout, but I’m
not looking for it.”
Mellen’s goal this coming
spring would get the team back
into the tournament, while winning
every time that he takes to
the mound.
“Last year we backed into the
playoffs (Norwood was 10-10 entering
the Division 1 South Tournament),
I want to take this team
to be one of the top 8 in the state,
not just get into the tournament,”
Mellen said. “As the number one
pitcher I have to face the best
teams out there; my goal is to win
every start that I can. My job is to
shut down the best teams while
giving our team a chance to win.”
Mellen would not only like to
go out in style, but also prove to
Northeastern that they made the
right decision in choosing him to
pitch for the Huskies.
“Northeastern was the first Division
1 School that showed interest
in me before my season even
started,” Mellen said. “They told
me that I was a big lefty with composure
on the mound and they
liked that. I like the fact that the
school is local and feel that I will
be a good fit for them.”
Norwood Sports
Norwood Softball
by Christopher Tremblay
For the past two seasons, the
Norwood girls softball team has
been eliminated in the Division
1 South Quarter Final round of
the Tournament. Two years ago
after going 15-5, the Mustangs
fell to Bridgewater Raynham; last
spring, Norwood went an impressive
19-1 and once again fell in the
Quarter Finals, this time to King
Philip 3-2. Although Norwood
has owned the Bay State Conference
over the past few years, the
Mustangs know that this spring it’s
not going to be easy.
“Despite having won six of the
last seven Bay State Conference
(BSC) Championships, this year
is going to be tougher than the
past,” Norwood Coach Carol Savino
said. “We’re going to have to
go up against Walpole, Natick and
Dedham twice.”
Having lost pitcher Katie
O’Donnell and catcher Erin Garczynski
to graduation, Savino
knows things are not going to be
easy this campaign.
“When you lose your battery
it’s going to be a tough season;
possibly somewhat of a rebuilding
year,” the Norwood Coach said.
Looking to help the Mustangs
to yet another BSC Championship
will be tri-captains Taylor
Reed, who will play first base;
Alyssa Chamberlain, the team’s
shortstop and Emily Bonaccorso,
the centerfielder. Bonaccorso patrolled
left field last season, but Savino
has moved her to center due
to her quickness and her ability to
cover a large amount of ground,
not to mention the two new corner
outfielders in junior Caitlan
Shaughnessy (left field) and Katie
Mulligan (right field).
While Reed will be at first and
Chamberlain at short, Norwood
will also employ junior Soibhan
Reen at second, a position she’s
held since her freshman year, and
Janelle Kelleher at third, giving the
Mustangs a very sturdy infield according
to the Coach.
Taking over the pitching duties
this season will be junior Cassie
Pinciaro, and while O'Donnell is
a tough act to follow, she will be
effective with her teammates behind
her.
“Katie was a dead on pitcher
who had pinpoint accuracy
and averaged 12-14 strikeouts a
game,” Savino said. "Cassie’s not
going to get that type of production.
She’s going to have to rely
on her defense to play good ball
behind her.”
In addition to Pinciaro seeing
action on the mound, Norwood
cannot go into the season without
a back-up hurler so Savino will
have two freshmen in Katie Welch
and Amanda Olbrys in the wings.
According to the skipper, the duo
is not quite ready but will eventually
be the future of Mustang softball.
Behind the plate will also be
another newcomer in freshman
Bryn Garczynski. She can play
the position well and will be able
Pictures left to right: captains Emily Bonaccorso and Alyssa
Chamberlain
to put the ball in play when at the
plate offensively.
The Mustangs will be employing
a lot of inexperienced athletes
on the varsity level, but the coach
is hoping for the best.
“My goal is that we will hopefully
go .500 giving these young
girls some tournament experience,”
Savino said. “These girls
are our future and will need to
come together. Our pitching is not
going to be what we had last year
and they will give up some runs,
but they are young and will grow,”
Norwood Basketball Camp
by Christopher Tremblay
The Norwood High School
basketball program under the
guidance of Mustang Coaches
Rich Cormier and Amy Lepley
have announced that it will be
hosting the 2016 Norwood Mustangs
Basketball Camp. The camp
will run July 11–15, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.,
for any athletes (boy or girl) entering
grades 1-9.
The Camp will be held at the
Norwood High School, and will
cost $200 ($175 if paid prior to
June 1). All campers will receive a
shirt and individual player evaluation.
All participating athletes will
be divided into appropriate groups
based on age and ability.
The Camp staff will be onsite
a 7:45 a.m., on July 11 to begin
registration and will arrive at 8:15
a.m., the remainder of the week to
allow parents to drop off children
early if needed. This extended
time will allow campers the opportunity
to enjoy open gym time
before the start of each day’s activities.
Families are invited to attend
any part of the camp week.
Each day’s activities will build
upon the previous day in hopes
of maximizing individual improvement.
Each team will have
an individual coach for the week
and a designated coach for stations
and drills. During the week,
the coaches will give emphasis to
shooting, rebounding, ball handling,
defensive play and fundamental
skills. The camp will also
include a minimum of two games
per day as well as a daily 3-on-3
contest in addition to other competitive
and fun games.
The staff will include Cormier,
the Norwood boys coach for the
past ten years as well as girls second-year
coach Lepley. Additionally,
Boys JV Coach Joseph Oliver
and Boys Freshmen Coach Paul
Nimblett will be assisting.
The Norwood Mustang Basketball
Camp is committed to
providing the finest teaching and
learning environment possible for
the young athletes of Norwood
while learning the game of basketball
in addition to having fun. The
camp will make every effort to improve
the individual skill level of
each participant with high quality
instruction. According to the directors,
the camp strives to create
a positive atmosphere that teaches
the value of learning, competition
and personal growth.
4 Reasons to Buy a New Home in 2016
If you're thinking about buying
a new home, 2016 could be
the time to do it. There are several
reasons why now is a great tome
to make your move on getting the
house you've always wanted. Here
are the top four reasons:
1). Low Rates
You may have heard the Fed
recently raised short-term interest
rates for the first time in seven
years. Although this may have
some impact on mortgage rates
as mortgages are trading on the
bond market, you may not see as
much of an impact as you think.
Why is that? The people who
trade mortgage bonds have been
picking up on some not-so-subtle
signals given by the Federal Open
Market Committee, the governing
body that makes decisions on
short-term Interest rates. In short,
the Fed did exactly as everyone
expected and the move has been
pending for a while.
Rates also won't be going
down, so now is a good time to
lock up your mortgage with a low
rate.
2). Economic Uptick
The economy has showed signs
of picking up over the last several
months as evidenced by the number
of jobs being added in the
monthly employment report.
Among other date, the most recent
employment situation report
covering November showed that
211,000 jobs were added to the
economy. Unemployment is at a
very low 5%. Jobs mean money in
Americans' pockets. More money
means more purchasing power for
the home buyer. More purchasing
power means finally being able to
buy that home you've been looking
at for a while.
3). Home Values
Real estate values are on the
upswing. As of November, 2015,
they're up 4.84% since this time
last year. This is particularly important
for homeowners to know.
It can be easy to think of our
homes as a place to put down
roots, enjoy a sense of security
and, in many cases, watch our
families grow.
4). It's an investment!
There's another element of
homeownership that people
might overlook. We don't often
think about the home as an investment.
However, as you gain equity
by making monthly payments or
through increases in value in your
area, you're building on an investment.
You can use that equity
down the line to cash out and pay
for home improvements or other
expenses.
With home values rising right
now, it's an important reminder
that your home can be a part of
your investment portfolio.
Franklin Library Invites
Genealogy-minded
Folks to Join the Club
By MarJorie turner ho lMan
The night was bi ter cold, but
for the 20+ folks who showed up
a the Franklin Public Library for
the first m eting of the Genealogy
Club, it was a time to talk
about family co nections and
countries of origin. Many participants
were from Franklin, with a
few from Milford, Norfolk and
Be lingham. The theme of connections
was consistent as each
person explained their interest in
participating in the group.
Linda Batchelder of Franklin
noted that she got interested in
genealogy because of a relative’s
ashes that remain in her a tic.
“His name was Bertul—he died
during the 1918 flu epidemic—
a friend of my grandfather’s,”
Batchelder began. “When my
grandfather was able to return to
Latvia, he wa su posed to take
the ashes wit him, but wasn’t
a lowed to. They’re sti l in our
a tic. We learned that Bertul had
b en our grandfather’s best man
in his we ding and ma ried a
relative of ours.”
Each person had stories to
share of wha they had already
learned in their family research,
and a l had mysteries they hoped
to solve in the future. Vicki Buchanio,
Head of Reference and
Public Services a the Franklin
Public Library told the group, “I
have lots of relations who must
sti l be alive—I’ve never found
the death certificates for them,
even though some of them were
born in 1802, so they must sti l
be alive!”
Among those who a tended
were people with r ots in Finland,
Poland, Germany, and
England, besides several of
Scots-Irish descent. Buchanio
was pleased with the turnout—
she had b en afraid n one would
show up. Buchanio has had a
long-time pa sion for genealogy
A times, we hear news reports
of a beloved parent with
Alzheimer’s disease or dementia,
who has wandered ou the
or other situations where a child
or t en with Autism or a mental
encounter with police officers
who weren’t aware of the child’s
special circumstances and fears.
In these cases, a li tle knowledge
can go a long way.
The Ho liston Police Department
aims to arm itself with
that knowledge and ge to be ter
In January, The Ho liston
Police Department launched
the C.A.R.E. (Children and
Residents Encounter) program,
aimed at helping police gather
information about member of
the co munity with special
Lt. Craig Denman is overs e-
“Basica ly, it’ something we
would be beneficial for people
in our co munity, and so we decided
to develop and adopt it and
Is It Spring, Yet?
Second A nual Ho liston AgCom Family Event
March 2 at Br ezy Hi l
By J.d. o’Gara
It’s b en a rea ly long winter.
Members of Ho liston’s Agricultural
Co mi t e, or AgCom,
are asking a very logical question
– “Is It Spring, Yet?” with
their Second A nual Family
Event welcoming the season on
Sunday, March 2, from 12-4
p.m., to take place at Br ezy
Hi l Farm, 583 Adams Str et,
Ho liston. As it did last year,
th event wi l feature baby animals
and farm-related fun for
the whole family, and the suggested
family donation, which
wi l su port Ho liston AgCom,
is just $5.
“This is just a fun event for
families in town, because the
town i so su portive of agriculture,”
says Paula Mark, member
of the Agricultural Co mi sion
who has lived in Ho liston for
12 years on land, she says, that’s
b en in her husband’s family
for generations. “When we got
this property, it was inevitable
that I was going to turn it into
a farm,” she says, explaining,
with a smile, that her sma l farm
has grown from just chickens to
now, b es, alpacas, a horse and
ra bit. The 4H leader hopes her
place can someday be a place
for “ kids to come to reco nect
to nature and learn how to act
around animals.”
Animals – in fact, animal
families, are sure to be what
Ho liston kids and their own
families are going to s e a the
The Li tle White Market Wi l Be Back Be ter than Ever at End of Month
By J.d. o’Gara
Just over six years ago,
Tracey Liberatore had a
“I thought it would
make a cute li tle market,
and we didn’t have anything
says the Hopedale
could turn that li tle
the co munity, Tracey
could. She’d worked in
the f od industry since she
was a t en, later partnering
through which Liberatore
its restaurant, and she later came
Busy wit her two boys, Liberatore
started slo wit her
she built a su ce sfu luncheon
“I think we have a real home
comfy, like you’re walking into
your grandmother’s
kitchen. It’s cozy, and
there are sme ls (o f od
Liberatore and her
sta f c ok a l of the
dishes right on the premises.
“We do a lot of
homemade soups and
salads, everything from
“We even roast
our turkeys here, make
meatba ls, and we o fer
chicken Marsala and
In fact, Hopedale
residents and local busine
take advantage of the
catering options, an area
Liberatore is excited to
Do you know wha tests your
child is taking thi spring? One
local residen thinks parents are
uninformed abou the new education
standards and the a companying
tests being considered by the
state of Ma sachuse ts. He hopes
to bring the polarizing i sue to the
forefront at Norfolk Town M eting
and on the town election ballot.
The United States is embarking
on an unprecedented journey
to unify education standards for a l
students in kindergarten through
12th grade. Known as the Common
Core State Standards Initiative,
these standard set co mon
education benchmarks acro s the
country in order to prepare students
for co lege and the workforce.
The Co mon Core uses the
Partnership for A se sment of
Readine s for Co lege and Car
ers, or the PAR C exam, to test
ho we l students have learned the
new cu riculum. In Ma sachuse ts,
the PAR C exam wi l eventua ly
replace the Ma sachuse ts Comprehensive
A se sment System,
or MCAS test.
Norfolk resident Patrick
Touhey would like to pu the
brakes on the PAR C test and
force discu sion of the new standards
and whether or no the
Norfolk and King Philip sch ols
should implemen them. Touhey
wi l be placing an article on the
Norfolk Town M eting wa rant
to remove Co mon Core and
PAR C testing from the sch ols
in a non-binding vote. He is also
a tempting to get enough signatures
to place the question on the
ba lot for the town election this
spring.
Touhey hopes these actions
wi l send a me sage to local sch ol
co mi t es and the State Department
of Education: “We don’t
agr e with the PAR C testing and
Co mon Core cu riculum.” He
wants the local sch ols to return to
the pre-2 09 Ma sachuse ts educational
After a tough winter, the
co munity can l ok forward to
a w ek of nature i mersion that
doesn’t involve snow. The King
Philip Science National Honor
Society wi l be hosting naturalist
Brent Nixon during the w ek of
March 17 to 24. Several events
are pla ned for the sch ols and
the tri-town area.
Nixon, a renowned science
educator, has dedicated his life
to endangered species research.
Known for his high energy, interpretive
science shows, Nixon
travels extensively to promote
environmental education. In
a dition to his research work
and publications, Nixon has appeared
on TV, radio, and in print
media.
The Naturalist-in-Residence
w ek was the idea of A n Lambert,
a science teacher at KP
High Sch ol and the advisor for
the sch ol’s Science National
Honor Society. Lambert had
traveled to Alaska on a cruise
and Nixon was the naturalist on
board.
“His pa sion for his work,
knowledge about his topics,
and informational presentation
style was what made me think it
would be a great o portunity for
the KP students and co munity
if we could bring him here,” said
Lambert.
Lambert believes that when
students actua ly m et scientists
and interact with them, science
becomes interesting and fun.
Nixon’s expertise on wildlife and
Seeks to Connect
Community
By J.D. O’Gara
Chuck Tashjian aims t o fer
Natick residents a lot more than
the premiere i sue of localtownpages
in their mailboxes
this month; he hopes to foster
a new co nection to their community.
Over 16, 0 copies of
the tabloid-sized newspaper
wi l be produced each month,
and these wi l be direct mailed
fr e of charge to households
and busine ses in the town. The
paper wi l also be available in its
“This paper is to let residents
of Natic kno what’s going
on in their local co munity,”
says Tashjian, who envisions his
publication as a way fo readers
to stay abreast of a l their towns
have t o fer, including town
news, nonprofit organizations,
town sports and local busine ses.
A companying the news resource
west area. Online visitors wi l be
able to a ce s th entire newspaper,
Tashjian began his entrepreneurial
car er in 1 9 as owner
of Photosite in Mi lis, later shifting
t o fset printing in 2 04.
He then expanded his busine s
to include the production of
local telephone directories in the
Dover, Sherborn, Uxbridge and
su rounding areas. As a sma l
busine s owner, the publisher is
acutely aware of the cha lenges
area busine ses face in reaching
key audiences with their limited
funds or vechile’s to reach the
whole town of Natick. Local
Town Pages has also invited
local nonprofit groups to submit
monthly news articles and event
listings. The publisher also en-
‘a Place To Turn’
for those in need
By liz taurasi
It’s b en years in the making,
but despite some majo roadblocks
an delays, University
Station in Westw od is fina ly
opening for busine s in March.
And with it come some big
name stores the area has b en
waiting for, including Target (set
t open March 4, s e related story
on page 13) and Wegmans, both
of which wi l anchor the complex.
University Station, when
fu ly complete, is expected to
include a proximately 50, 0
square f et of retail and restaurant
space, along with residential
apartments and more.
University Station officia ly
opens for busine s in March as
we l as 16 busine ses, including:
Target, Marsha ls/HomeG ods,
Nordstrom Rack, Sports Authority,
PetSmart, Michaels, ULTA
Beauty, Kay Jewelers, Starbucks,
Smashburger, Famous F otwear,
Fidelity Investments, Dre s Barn,
David’s Bridal, Panera Bread,
and Charming Charlies.
Situated on 120 acres, University
Station, isn’t just going to be
a new sho ping destination, it’s
also a co munity. The mixeduse
development wi l feature
a blend of retail stores, restaurants,
recreation and residential
housing. The initial residential
component of the project wi l
include Gables residential, which
wi l feature 350 luxury apartment
units, as we l as Bridges
by Epoch, a memory care facility;
both also expected t open
this year. Gables Residential is
projected t open in late spring
2015, a cording to New England
Development officials.
A ditiona ly, University Station
is expected to have up to
350, 0 square f et of o fice
space available.
The project has b en a long
time in the making. In 2 07,
the project was put on hol due
to pla ning and financial i sues.
In 2 08, Wegmans was held up
from coming in after a local state
representative ca led for a home
rule petition to a prove the liquor
license for Wegmans at what was
then known as Westw od Station.
This ha pened just as the
legislature was ready to move
ahead with the a proval. A the
time, some local representatives
were concerned about giving
Wegmans an advantage over
Roche Bros. Both Wegmans and
Roche Bros wer eventua ly able
to secure b er and wine licenses
in the spring of 2012. Westw od
Special Town M eting a proved
the long-awaited project back in
May, 2013. Developers broke
ground on the project six months
later.
University Station is being
developed by New England Development,
along with Eastern
Real Estate and National Development.
“We l ok forward to welcoming
local and area residents to
this new sho ping destination,”
Dougla s Karp, president of New
England Development said in a
formal statement. “University
Station wi l be an exciting new
a dition to Westw od and brings
together a mix of popular stores,
restaurants, housing and more.”
Register O’Donnell Warns Homeowners
About Deed Scam
Continuing his efforts to combat
consumer fraud, Norfolk
County Register of Deeds William
P. O’Donnell recently expressed
his ongoing frustration regarding
Norfolk County residents who
continue to receive direct-mail solicitations
offering them a certified
copy of their property deed for an
exorbitant fee ranging anywhere
from $59.50-$83.00.
Register O’Donnell stated
“These companies are making
outrageous profits. If a consumer
knew that the Registry of Deeds
would provide them a certified
copy of a property deed for a
charge of only $1.00 per page,
plus an additional $1.00 for postage,
they would never agree to pay
WALPOLE
4 Bedroom, 2.5 Bath Custom Colonial
being built! 3 Car Garage! Still time
to pick your colors! Final price to be
determined in the $700s
these companies such an outrageous
fee for service. The average
price for a mailed homeowner’s
deed by the Registry (usually two
pages) is $3.00.”
The Registry has heard numerous
stories from Norfolk
County residents about examples
of receiving deed solicitation notices
from a California private
company. The solicitation was labeled
Recorded Deed Notice and
requested that the homeowner
forward a check to them in the
amount of $83.00 for a copy of
their deed. A Braintree resident,
who received the solicitation, notified
the Registry about the advertisement
instead of spending
$83.00.
Register O’Donnell stated,
“While the practice may be legal,
it’s certainly not ethical. Clearly
these direct-mail companies are
preying upon the innocent assumptions
of Norfolk County
residents, many of whom are
first-time homeowners or elderly.
Consumers are interpreting these
notices as a bill, since they are affixed
with a due date. I urge Norfolk
County citizens not to fall prey
to these types of misleading deed
scam advertisements.”
If you receive such a deed solicitation
notice, please contact
the Registry’s Customer Service
Department immediately at (781)
461-6101 or by email at registerodonnell@norfolkdeeds.org.
Additionally, if you desire a copy
of your deed, also contact the
Registry’s Customer Service Department
and we will be glad to
provide you with one for a nominal
fee of usually $2.00-$3.00.
Own a Piece of Paradise
Ever dream of owning a home
in Florida? What if you could
own a home near Disney and see
return on your real estate by using
as a rental, with no extra work on
your part?
“We are only a couple of miles
from Disney World,” says Matt
Montalvo, who moved to the Florida
area from Central Massachusetts
10 years ago. “When we sell
a home, we can put owners into
our vacation rental program. Buyers
have an option where they can
use it strictly as a second home or
rent it out as a vacation home. We
oversee, maintain, manage and
market the property.”
Homes range in size from 2,000
to 20,000 square feet, condominiums
and town homes perfect for
retirees and vacation homes for
families to sprawling estate homes
for corporate executives. All have
private swimming pools and are
located in golf resorts that feature
golf, water parks and even restaurants
among their amenities.
“All of them are professionally
managed and maintained, beautiful
luxury estate homes,” says
Montalvo.
For more information on investing
in your piece sunny Florida,
Here is a recently purchased
vacation home. Check out 502
just 15 minutes to Disney.
“I must say, Matt has gone
beyond what I had experienced
with other realtors and also beiing
fromBoston, he could relate to
what I was looking for, not just as a
home, but as an investment.”
