St. Catherine Statue<br />

Vandalized During Holy Week<br />

On Good Friday,<br />

March 25, a sacred<br />

day for Catholics, the<br />

Virgin Mary statue<br />

was vandalized outside<br />

St. Catherine of Siena<br />

Parish in <strong>Norwood</strong>.<br />

This was the first of<br />

three similar events in<br />

the Boston area that<br />

occured during the<br />

holy week.<br />

Following the incident,<br />

statues at St.<br />

Margaret Parish in<br />

Burlington and St.<br />

Mary’s Church in Billerica<br />

were also defaced,<br />

prompting questions<br />

from police and residents<br />

about whether<br />

the acts were connected.<br />

“We are aware of the incidents<br />

in Burlington and Billerica,<br />

but I do not believe we will find<br />

them to be done by the same<br />

person,” <strong>Norwood</strong> Police Chief<br />

William G. Brooks III said.<br />

While the timing and nature<br />

of the vandalism is thought to<br />

be coincidental, the <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

statue was hit with graffiti, while<br />

the statues in Burlington and<br />

Billerica were found with their<br />

heads and hands severed. There<br />

was also a symbol scrolled across<br />

the bottom of the statue at St.<br />

Catherine’s.<br />

that diverts a person’s attention<br />

away from the primary task of<br />

By now, everyone has heard<br />

that driving while distracted is<br />

dangerous. The National Safety<br />

Council reports that cell phone use<br />

while driving leads to 1.6 million<br />

crashes each year. Even worse are<br />

the statistics about texting while<br />

driving. Studies have been<br />

done that quantify the<br />

reaction times of people<br />

who text and drive. For<br />

example, according to a<br />

study by the Virginia Tech<br />

Transportation Institute,<br />

sending or receiving a text<br />

takes a driver’s eyes off the<br />

road for an average of 4.6<br />

seconds, the equivalent of<br />

driving blindfolded at 55-<br />

mph for the length of an<br />

entire football field.<br />

It is a growing trend<br />

and a national epidemic<br />

that is quickly becoming<br />

one of the country’s top<br />

killers.<br />

One <strong>Norwood</strong> resident knows<br />

this all too well. Tom Brannelly<br />

lost his 24 year old daughter Katie<br />

in 2013 to a distracted driver.<br />

“She was crossing the street in<br />

the center of <strong>Norwood</strong> on March<br />

2nd, 2012, with her boyfriend<br />

Dom and her friend Kerri," Brannelly<br />

said. "Dom was able to push<br />

Kerri out of the way, but he and<br />

Katie were hit.”<br />

Katie sustained a traumatic<br />

brain injury and after several<br />

weeks in the Intensive Care Unit<br />

was transferred to a rehabilitation<br />

center, where she was in a<br />

minimal awareness coma; a shell<br />

of the vibrant young woman who<br />

was due to graduate from Bridgewater<br />

State University cum laude<br />

and who wanted to spend her life<br />

helping children.<br />

“For 15 months, my wife Valerie,<br />

our children Marty and Janeen,<br />

and her boyfriend Dom<br />

(who has since made a full recovery)<br />

visited Katie every day, spending,<br />

10 to 12 hours a day talking to<br />

her, encouraging her, looking for<br />

any little sign of progress.” Brannelly<br />

said. “She became our whole<br />

life.”<br />

But, Katie ultimately lost her<br />

life due to complications from the<br />

injuries sustained in the motor<br />

vehicle crash. Evidence later revealed<br />

that the 25 year-old driver,<br />

a Suffolk law student, had either<br />

received or sent eight text messages<br />

before the crash, including<br />

one minute before, and was likely<br />

texting at the time.<br />

“Why?”, Brannelly asked.<br />

“What was so important that required<br />

eight texts from Boston to<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong>–that’s a text every three<br />

or four minutes. The woman was<br />

not convicted.” He believes it is a<br />

gross injustice.<br />

Brannelly continues to grieve.<br />

The pain is permanently etched<br />

on his face. He says he visits Katie’s<br />

gravesite every day, sometimes<br />

three times a day.<br />

“The pain does not go away,”<br />

Brannelly said.<br />

Brannelly has been very active<br />

in trying to put an end to distracted<br />

driving and is determined that<br />

Katie’s death serve some positive<br />

purpose. In December of 2015,<br />

Brannelly was contacted by Representative<br />

Cory Atkins and asked<br />

to speak on the issue of distracted<br />

driving. Atkins is the sponsor of a<br />

bill that would ban hand-held cell<br />

phone use while behind the wheel.<br />

Simple Steps We Can Take<br />

For Safer Driving<br />

Do your part to put an end to distracted driving. Below is EndDD’s checklist of simple steps you<br />

can take to avoid being a distracted driver and to protect yourself, your friends, family and others from<br />

preventable crashes.<br />

1. Drive without reading or sending texts, snapchatting, using the internet, Facebook or social media<br />

of any kind.<br />

2. Call/text before I start driving to let parents, friends and others know when I’ll arrive.<br />

3. Wait to text or call others until they have stopped driving.<br />

4. Pull over to a safe location to check texts, social media, or listen to voice mail.<br />

5. Deputize my passenger when I am driving to text or make calls for me.<br />

6. When alone, turn my cell phone off before starting to drive.<br />

7. Stop texting, or end phone conversations with others once I learn they are driving.<br />

8. Pull over to a safe location or wait until I am finished driving to eat or apply make-up.<br />

9. Pull over to a safe location or wait until I am finished driving to adjust music, scroll through I-Pods,<br />

I -phones or similar devices.<br />

10. When being driven by a distracted driver ask the driver to drive safer.<br />

11. As a passenger, share the responsibility for arriving safely with my driver and offer help so my<br />

driver does not drive distracted.<br />

When it was his time to speak,<br />

he held up an enlarged photo of<br />

Katie and said: “I’m here because<br />

she’s not.” He wanted legislators<br />

to be able to put a face to the issue<br />

of distracted driving.<br />

Massachusetts already has a<br />

law banning texting while driving,<br />

but many drivers continue<br />

to do it while behind the wheel,<br />

often hiding their phones in their<br />

laps. Advocates for a hands-free<br />

phone option say it will improve<br />

public safety.<br />

“It might also help police enforce<br />

the current laws,” Brannelly<br />

said.<br />

But Brannelly said he believes<br />

the Legislature should go one step<br />

further and ban all cell phone use<br />

in vehicles while they are moving.<br />

He has been in regular contact<br />

with Jeff Larason, the State’s<br />

Highway Safety Director, who<br />

Larason helps keep him informed<br />

of Massachusetts initiatives aimed<br />

at mitigating the problem.<br />

Larason’s division teamed up<br />

with state and local police in more<br />

than 140 cities and towns in a<br />

statewide crackdown of distracted<br />

driving for three weeks in April,<br />

during Distracted Driving Month,<br />

as part of a national campaign<br />

called “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.”<br />

Larason has said this problem<br />

is not limited to teenage drivers. In<br />

fact, according to public data, the<br />

preponderance of distracted driving<br />

fatalities from 2010 to 2013<br />

were caused by adults between the<br />

ages of 45 and 64.<br />

Brannelly works tirelessly to<br />

keep Katie’s memory alive in<br />

the hope that another family will<br />

not have to go through what his<br />

family has endured. He asks that<br />

At St. Catherine’s, the church<br />

continues to mourn the attack,<br />

but are working toward a resolution.<br />

In its weekly bulletin, Father<br />

Donohoe expressed the that<br />

church and its members were<br />

“saddened and dismayed” by the<br />

vandalism, but noted it is the “hallmark<br />

of Christianity” to remain<br />

resolved in faith and to pray for<br />

the persons responsible.<br />

Father Donohoe also stated<br />

that the outpouring of support has<br />

been uplifting, and that the church<br />

is working with various agencies to<br />

restore the statue.<br />

“Local and out of state contractors<br />

have volunteered their<br />

skills to help restore the statue,”<br />

Father Donohoe wrote. “Numerous<br />

contributions, from little<br />

children to the <strong>Norwood</strong> Police<br />

Association, have poured in to<br />

help in the restoration. Clearly, no<br />

amount of black paint could obscure<br />

the good will of the people<br />

of <strong>Norwood</strong> and beyond.”<br />

Join the Food Pantry Team in Walk for Hunger<br />

This year's 48th Annual Project<br />

Bread Walk for Hunger will<br />

be held on Sunday, <strong>May</strong> 1, and<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> will again be represented<br />

by the <strong>Norwood</strong> Food Pantry<br />

team. Last year, the <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

squad raised nearly $8,000, an accomplishment<br />

that ranked them<br />

in the top 10 fund-raising teams!<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> residents are invited to<br />

join the team or donate to support<br />

their neighbors and thousands of<br />

people throughout Massachusetts.<br />

“This year, we’re hoping to do<br />

even better,” says Team Captain<br />

Nick Campagna, who has already<br />

experienced 32 walks and logged<br />

640 miles under his belt.<br />

If 20 miles was too ambitious<br />

in past years, volunteers may be<br />

enticed to participate this year as<br />

the walk has been cut in half to 10<br />

miles due to construction in Watertown.<br />

Walking the entire course<br />

is available, however, contributors<br />

can accept pledges for whatever<br />

length they are comfortable, even<br />

a mile or two will help the cause!<br />

Buses will be on hand along route<br />

intervals to take walkers back to<br />

the starting point.<br />

Established in 1969, the Walk<br />

for Hunger is the oldest continual<br />

pledge walk in the country. Over<br />

40,000 are expected to take part in<br />

the fundraiser this year.<br />

If interested parties encounter<br />

a scheduling problem for <strong>May</strong> 1,<br />

there is also the option of signing<br />

up as a Virtual Walker, raising<br />

money through phone calls and<br />

emails.<br />

Tax deductible donations are<br />

also taken to support the <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

Pantry team in person or online.<br />

Dogs and their owners in <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

will have to wait yet again<br />

for a dedicated dog park. There<br />

was a glimmer of hope last summer<br />

when the <strong>Norwood</strong> Dog<br />

Park Committee polled residents<br />

in the Ellis Avenue neighborhoods<br />

and found a very positive<br />

response there. In fact, out of the<br />

approximately 140 houses polled,<br />

only 3 opposed the idea – but that<br />

was enough to stop development<br />

of the dog park in that location.<br />

While the <strong>Norwood</strong> Dog Park<br />

Committee had considered five<br />

potential sites in town, it seems<br />

that just a few opposed residents<br />

can halt plans at any one of them.<br />

After the Ellis Avenue location<br />

was eliminated, the committee<br />

shifted their focus to the Coakley<br />

Middle School as a potential site,<br />

since plans for an ice rink there<br />

have since been dismissed. The<br />

committee has hopes that a dog<br />

park could be developed there,<br />

but realizes neighboring support is<br />

still needed. While discour-aged,<br />

committee member Mark Rano<br />

remains somewhat optimistic that<br />

a dog park for the town can eventually<br />

become reality somewhere<br />

– with more support..<br />

“When we started polling, we<br />

didn’t think we needed a unanimous<br />

vote,” Rano ex-plained. “A<br />

mere 25-30 phone calls or emails<br />

of support in favor of a dog park<br />

to the Board of Selectmen could<br />

easily change the course for<br />

residents and dogs. We have the<br />

town’s approval and the funding,<br />

we just need a place to put it.”<br />

The up side to the Ellis Avenue<br />

location is timing. A dog park at<br />

this location could become available<br />

to residents in the very near<br />

future. But committee members<br />

who have dedicated their time and<br />

effort are growing weary-many in<br />

favor of a dog park in town have<br />

been at it since 2006.<br />

Committee members are now<br />

looking towards a new location<br />

where opposition would not be<br />

a factor. The new housing project<br />

slated for the Upland Woods<br />

area on Washington Street currently<br />

has a dog park in the plans<br />

for those new resi-dents. Hopefully,<br />

and as suggested by town<br />

officials, those plans can include,<br />

as a contingency, expanding the<br />

dog park to allow any <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

resident to walk their dog there.<br />

The down side to this location is<br />

the timeline. The project is easily<br />

two to three years away, and is not<br />

a definite that it will even<br />

be completed at all. What<br />

also cannot be overlooked<br />

is the funding. <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

would not incur any costs<br />

asso-ciated with a dog<br />

park and funding approval<br />

has already been<br />

appropriated through<br />

The Stanton Foundation<br />

provides grants to towns<br />

in Massachusetts solely<br />

for the development of dog parks.<br />

The grants cover up to 100% of<br />

the design costs and 90% of construction<br />

costs. Additionally, annual<br />

follow up capitol grants for<br />

repair and improvement, equal<br />

up to 5% of construction costs,<br />

are available for five years following<br />

the opening of such parks. To<br />

most residents in town, given the<br />

available funding and the more<br />

than 1200 registered dogs, it seems<br />

a no-brainer to move forward with<br />

a dog park.<br />

But it simply comes down to<br />

support–it’s either there or it’s not.<br />

In the meantime, letting Fido off<br />

the leash is still illegal and residents<br />

are still stuck heading out of town<br />

to let their dogs run free. But as always<br />

is the case, change starts with<br />

one person. In the case of a dog<br />

park, just a few dozen supporters<br />

would find the Board of Selectmen<br />

reconsidering sites like Ellis<br />

Avenue. Dog owners and those<br />

in support of a dog park here in<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> can call the Board of<br />

Viola Sastavickas Scholarship<br />

The family of Viola Sastavickas made a donation to the Morrill Memorial Library in 2007 in order to create a permanent scholarship in the amount of $500.<br />

This scholarship was to be awarded annually to a current or former library employee or library volunteer for one of the following purposes: undergraduate or<br />

graduate school, a formal course of study, or an enrichment opportunity (continuing education).<br />

This scholarship has been awarded nine times since 2007. (Elizabeth Porter, 2007; Lauren Bailey, 2008; Carolyn Bradley, 2009; Jillian Goss, 2010; Samantha<br />

Sherburne, 2011; Odhran O’Carroll, 2012; Laura Hogan, 2013; Hallie Miller, 2014; Maureen Riordan, 2015.) The scholarship will once again be awarded in<br />

<strong>2016</strong> thanks to additional generosity by the Sastavickas Family.<br />

Lieutenant Benedetti and Officer S. Miller walked into the local<br />

Starbucks last month while working their evening shift. A group of<br />

women were taking up one of the tables, knitting. One of the ladies<br />

came up to the counter and insisted she pay for the officer's coffee.<br />

Despite polite refusals, she pre-vailed. She and all of her friends<br />

then thanked them for their service and the entire coffee shop gave<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong>’s Art in Bloom A Success<br />

The George H. Morse House<br />

once again opened its lovely facility<br />

to host the <strong>Norwood</strong> Evening<br />

Garden Club’s 12th Art in Bloom<br />

event. Student artists from <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

and Walpole High Schools<br />

provided artwork and sculpture<br />

using many different media resources<br />

while members of the garden<br />

club put forth their best efforts<br />

at interpreting them.<br />

Needham and owner of Highgate<br />

Floral Designs has visited <strong>Norwood</strong>’s<br />

Art in Bloom for the past<br />

six years. She texted a message as<br />

she was leaving the Morse House<br />

saying, “Excellent! Art and florals<br />

get better every year.”<br />

Most garden club members<br />

primarily consider themselves<br />

“dirt gardeners” and aren’t comfortable<br />

doing flower arrangements,<br />

especially those that will<br />

be on public display. Lorraine<br />

Devine, past president of the club,<br />

sums up how many of the designers<br />

feel.<br />

“It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a<br />

bit nerve wracking because you<br />

want to do a good job for the student<br />

and you don’t want to make<br />

a fool of yourself,” Devine said.<br />

“It has also been a great learning<br />

experience getting to know about<br />

the different flowers and greens<br />

that are available, and how you<br />

condition them so they last as long<br />

as possible. This is my sixth year<br />

doing Art in Bloom, and I think I<br />

finally got the hang of it this year.”<br />

Nancy Costa, Chair of Art<br />

in Bloom <strong>2016</strong>, said she couldn’t<br />

be more pleased with this year’s<br />

event.<br />

“Nearly 300 people viewed the<br />

displays over the weekend, and<br />

two classes of students from the<br />

middle school viewed the displays<br />

on Monday," Costa said. "They<br />

are our future artists. I want them<br />

to get excited about participating<br />

in the future. I guess it’s the<br />

teacher in me.”<br />

Students were asked to look at<br />

the art and floral pieces and focus<br />

on the textures of each. After they<br />

looked at each piece, they were<br />

to select the one that exhibited<br />

the greatest match in terms of<br />

drawing and floral texture. What<br />

emerged was very interesting. The<br />

two classes were evenly<br />

split in their choices.<br />

Many gravitated to<br />

a piece that had been<br />

composed on a map,<br />

and which used pieces<br />

of wire to delineate a<br />

bridge. The piece was<br />

done by Emily Schneider<br />

of Walpole. Color<br />

was limited to subtle<br />

greens and pale yellows,<br />

melding into blue. The<br />

depth of the composition<br />

was striking. Students<br />

noted that they liked the<br />

fact that wire was carefully added<br />

and that everything was not simply<br />

painted on. It was not an easy<br />

piece to interpret. Yours truly had<br />

the honor.<br />

The second piece most-selected<br />

by the students was by Macy<br />

Chutoransky, of Walpole, whose<br />

pastel conch shell received many<br />

visitors’ compliments. When the<br />

young artist visited the exhibit,<br />

she was quite taken with the flowers<br />

used by club president, Tracy<br />

Firth, to interpret her piece.<br />

“I love the selection of flowers<br />

… and the choice of container …<br />

and how she captured the curves<br />

and the feeling of my piece.”<br />

Lake submitted a striking landscape,<br />

muted, did visitors have favorites?<br />

Without a doubt. But the predominant<br />

comments of the weekend<br />

were about the wealth of talent<br />

housed under the Morse House<br />

roof by artists and designers alike.<br />

Local Letter Carriers Help Stamp Out Hunger<br />

Helping feed the hungry is as<br />

easy as mailing a letter...from the<br />

comfort of your own home. On<br />

Saturday, <strong>May</strong> 14, letter carriers<br />

will be picking up non-perishable<br />

food on their routes as part of the<br />

24th Annual Letter Carriers’ Food<br />

Drive.<br />

“This is the largest one-day<br />

food drive in the country,” Jack<br />

Curran , <strong>Norwood</strong>, Vice-President<br />

of Local 742 of the National<br />

Association of Letter Carriers<br />

(AFL-CIO) and Food Drive Coordinator<br />

said. “Last year in <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

and Westwood alone, our<br />

members collected over 16,000<br />

pounds of food – about eight tons<br />

– to help the hundreds of families<br />

here who are struggling with hunger.<br />

And this year, we’re hoping to<br />

do even better.”<br />

On this day, when <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

residents leave marked bags of<br />

non-perishable food by their mailbox<br />

in the morning, mail carriers<br />

will pick up the packages during<br />

their regular route and take them<br />

to a central sorting location.<br />

“All types of non-perishable<br />

food – from peanut butter and<br />

jelly to soup and cereal…canned<br />

vegetables and tomatoes to cake<br />

and brownie mix…baked beans<br />

to boxed meals like Hamburger<br />

Helper and Pasta Roni – are welcome,"<br />

Bill Discepolo, Stock and<br />

Rotation Manager at the <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

pantry said. “But right now,<br />

we especially need Spam, beef<br />

stew, solid white tuna, and other<br />

canned meat; canned fruit and<br />

bottled juice; and canned pasta<br />

like Chef Boyardee. The only<br />

requirement is that all cans and<br />

boxes must be new and in good<br />

condition. Anything outdated or<br />

opened has to be thrown away for<br />

health reasons.”<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> is one of 10,000 cities<br />

and towns across America taking<br />

part in the Letter Carriers’ Food<br />

Drive. The national effort began<br />

in 1992 and letter carriers, represented<br />

by the National Association<br />

of Letter Carriers, postal employees,<br />

volunteers, and sponsoring<br />

organizations, have delivered 1.4<br />

billion pounds of donated food to<br />

regional food banks and local food<br />

pantries, including almost 71 million<br />

pounds in 2015.<br />

“We’re proud to be part of this<br />

powerful effort to help our neighbors<br />

in need,” Curran said. Right<br />

now, one out of every seven Americans<br />

is not sure where their next<br />

meal is coming from – and one<br />

out of every five children. There<br />

are seniors and veterans right here<br />

in town who have to choose between<br />

paying their rent and utilities<br />

and buying food. We see the<br />

need every day on our routes, and<br />

we feel this is a great way to lend<br />

a hand.”<br />

“The Letter Carriers’ Drive<br />

is probably the single most important<br />

day of the year for us,”<br />

Claudia Mackey, one of the pantry’s<br />

two recently elected Assistant<br />

Executive Directors, said. “We depend<br />

on it to get through the lean<br />

summer months when donations<br />

always dip because people are<br />

busy or away on vacation – and<br />

into the fall.<br />

“The people of <strong>Norwood</strong> have<br />

always responded to the Letter<br />

Carriers’ Drive with a huge outpouring<br />

of generosity,” Assistant<br />

Executive Director Nancy Maier<br />

added. “And we thank each and<br />

every one of you – carriers and<br />

donors alike – for caring and sharing.”<br />

through your pantry or pick up a<br />

few items at the grocery store and<br />

place them in a marked bag by the<br />

FACT: A large majority of cats and kittens brought to rescues or released to the outdoors<br />

actually come from loving homes. In many cases the owners have to make a choice between<br />

where they live and having pets. This is a terrible decision to have to make.<br />

It is very sad when we humans separate pets from their people but it happens all the time.<br />

MAKE SURE YOU ARE ALLOWED EVERY PET YOU OWN IF YOU RENT OR LIVE<br />

WITH PARENTS. It’s the responsible thing to do for our four-legged family members. Do not<br />

take it for granted that a friendly landlord will allow your wishes to own multiple pets come true!<br />

Diesel<br />

Meet Diesel:<br />

Diesel is a black and tan, tiger kitty who likes to just lay<br />

around and be lazy! You can’t help but love this mature, settled,<br />

8-year-old cat that enjoys the company of people (young<br />

and old) and likes to be around other cats. No worries if you<br />

have to leave him alone sometimes, he will make himself quite<br />

comfortable. You will probably find him doing some Garfieldlounging<br />

in a nice sunny spot. In addition to his awesome personality,<br />

he is a very handsome cat! Diesel’s life was recently<br />

turned upside down when his owners were told<br />

they had to get rid of him and his housemates<br />

by their landlord. It was a sad day for the family<br />

and even sadder for him and his friends. He was<br />

very much a part of his human family and was<br />

loved dearly, he will be missed.<br />

Meet Lily:<br />

We are sad to say that Lily<br />

was one of our adopted felines,<br />

happy to welcome her back!<br />

This almost three-year-old, orange,<br />

tiger colored, female kitty<br />

also resided with Diesel and has<br />

been happy for over 2 years in<br />

this welcoming home. Lily particularly<br />

loves to play with other<br />

cats and being in the company<br />

of people, so she would do best Lily<br />

in a home where she is not<br />

alone for long periods of time.<br />

An interesting fact about orange kitties…in the feline world 80 out of 100 orange cats will be<br />

male as compared to 20 out of that same 100 being female. To say Lily is 20 in a hundred would<br />

be a true tid-bit! But to many, she is 1 in a million.<br />

PET CORNER<br />

Meet Catalina:<br />

Catalina is a beautiful, young, tortoiseshell kitty. She had a tough start out on the streets<br />

behind a fire station, living day-by-day not knowing who to trust. She finally found her way into<br />

a colony fed by Bay State Animal Cooperative volunteers and soon she trusted these care givers.<br />

Catalina’s owners never claimed her after a search for them. In her foster home she loved<br />

sitting in the sun and lounging on the bed. Soon she was ready to move to the Petco Adoption<br />

Center in <strong>Norwood</strong> where she has a<br />

better chance to meet more perspective<br />

owners. This has been a bit trau-<br />

matic for her but she is coming right<br />

along and before we know it she will<br />

welcome the attention of many visitors<br />

we are sure. Once Catalina gets<br />

to know you, she is quite friendly and<br />

sweet. New situations are stressful for<br />

her but patience and kindness will<br />

bring out her good qualities.<br />

We are approaching the time of year when families consider getting new pet additions to<br />

their families…with this great responsibility comes fun, memories and friendships that will last<br />

forever. As part of your new venture any rescue cannot say enough how important proper training<br />

is for your new puppy! A well-adjusted puppy will be happy and so will the entire family. As<br />

a veterinary technician student myself I have learned that a puppy’s critical socialization time is<br />

between 10 and 14 weeks of age. What better time to safely, within a controlled environment,<br />

expose your vaccinated puppy to an array of stimuli ranging from other dogs, adults, kids, men,<br />

woman, variety of skin colors, playful noises, toys, activity and positive re-enforcement….this is<br />

dedicated volunteer and board member, Jen Rose will be running classes at the <strong>Norwood</strong> Petco<br />

We have presented this to you before but now we are seeking action. Before any more baby<br />

animals are exposed to the many excessive noises, handling and external conditions for OVER<br />

8 hours for human entertainment please speak up and be heard. Please either email us at info@<br />

baystateanimals.org, contact the <strong>Norwood</strong> Selectman at selectmen@norwoodma.gov or stop<br />

by the Petco adoption center and sign our petition to exclude this un-necessary event from our<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> Day! Efforts to remove this event through the <strong>Norwood</strong> Day Committee has been disregarded.<br />

Additionally, requests to verify vaccine histories and prevention of potential zoonotic<br />

diseases (animal to human transmitted diseases) that could be of concern through this venture<br />

have yet to be addressed by the <strong>Norwood</strong> Day Committee Director. For<br />

Common Myth<br />

Many cats, stray, free-roaming and even owned, will show a type<br />

of affection to the person who feeds them. However, in the freeroaming,<br />

un-socialized world this affection is too often confused as<br />

a desire to be adopted into a human home. Though we wish for the<br />

day that all cats are safe inside with loving owners who entertain<br />

them and love them furrr-eve,r the realty is there are still many unsocialized<br />

kitties that are better left in the environment they have<br />

become comfortable in, with caring feeders and warm, safe shelters.<br />

Seek advice regarding what to do for free-roaming, un-socialized<br />

(feral) cats you may come across in your yard, place of employment<br />

or local businesses you patronize.<br />

Out and About<br />

Hope Eternal<br />

Things happen in the city. And<br />

quite honestly, and unfortunately<br />

it’s expected. Fences between<br />

neighbors are high, crime rates<br />

even higher. It’s the nature of the<br />

beast.<br />

But here in suburbia, especially<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong>, where I’ve hung my<br />

hat for many years now, certain<br />

things just don’t happen. Or so I<br />

thought.<br />

Recently, <strong>Norwood</strong> made<br />

news, and not because of its<br />

charitable contributions to other<br />

townsfolk, or commitment to<br />

community. But because of a<br />

dastardly deed that was committed<br />

on the eve of Good Friday.<br />

On one of Catholics’ most Holy<br />

Days, a crime was committed<br />

under cloak of night.<br />

Someone vandalized a statue<br />

of The Blessed Mother-spray<br />

painting the holy symbol with<br />

black paint. I’m hoping the person<br />

that did this now has an even<br />

darker black mark-on his soul. For<br />

those of us that believe in Hell,<br />

well, I’m pretty sure this perpetrator<br />

has a one way ticket, but I<br />

digress.<br />

This offended me not only as<br />

a Catholic (admittedly not a great<br />

one, not even a good one by many<br />

standards), but merely as a human<br />

being.<br />

Why? What is the point of<br />

doing such a thing; something<br />

so disgustingly disrespectful and<br />

hateful?<br />

Is that the perpetrator hates<br />

Catholics? Hates statues? Hates<br />

Saints? The name Mary? How<br />

does this type of hatred begin?<br />

How does one live their life with<br />

such hatred? Most importantly,<br />

how does this type of hatred end?<br />

Recently, there have been similar<br />

stories in the news. Knocking<br />

down grave stones, Swastikas and<br />

racial slurs found on churches<br />

and temples.<br />

Why? I’m assuming to cause<br />

damage and hurt to those that<br />

worship in churches and temples.<br />

To continue spreading the message<br />

of hate.<br />

I always thought, “Not in my<br />

town.” And, “something like<br />

that would never happen in <strong>Norwood</strong>.”<br />

But it did.<br />

Looking back weeks later,<br />

maybe we can all learn from this<br />

experience, and from our town’s<br />

response to it.<br />

Instead of the hate being<br />

spread, flowers were placed at<br />

the feet of the now cleaned statue<br />

of Mary.<br />

People came out in droves. Not<br />

to see the damage, but to repair it.<br />

They replaced the ugliness with<br />

something beautiful. They came<br />

together to support one another,<br />

where there was once hatred, love<br />

now blooms.<br />

I do not understand, nor do I<br />

condone, this type of hatred for<br />

my fellow man-his religious beliefs<br />

and differences.<br />

In spite of the disgusting<br />

behavior showed by the cowardly<br />

criminals, hope shined like a beacon<br />

of light-for all to see.<br />

And that’s why I love<br />

this town. Because people showed<br />

their true spirit and banded together<br />

to fix it. To support not<br />

only the Catholic community, but<br />

our community as a whole. To<br />

show all that this type of hatred<br />

and intolerance will not be tolerated<br />

here. To squash the hate.<br />

Because of those generous souls,<br />

where there is once hate, there is<br />

now a testament of love.<br />

Sean Mellen enjoys participating<br />

in hockey, baseball and football,<br />

but he admits, it’s the spring sport<br />

that brings this high school senior<br />

the most pleasure. The Mustang<br />

pitcher will continue his favored<br />

sport in college next year where<br />

he has been awarded a full scholarship<br />

to pitch for the Huskies of<br />

Northeastern.<br />

“I love all three sports because<br />

they are all so different and each<br />

offers something unique,” the<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> athlete said. “Baseball, I<br />

would have to say, is number one.<br />

I love the game and realized it the<br />

very first time that I picked up a<br />

baseball. It was a sport that you<br />

could go out with just a handful of<br />

friends and have fun.”<br />

Mellen, like most youngsters,<br />

quickly gravitated toward Little<br />

League baseball around the age<br />

of four. When he first encountered<br />

the game the now high school senior<br />

loved to pitch, but like everyone<br />

else played every position on<br />

the field. As a freshman, he played<br />

the outfield and pitched, but during<br />

his sophomore campaign, he<br />

settled on strictly pitching.<br />

Mellen said.<br />

“I took my turn on<br />

the mound although<br />

it wasn’t all that often<br />

(maybe 25-30 innings)<br />

as we had two<br />

great senior pitchers<br />

and another junior<br />

as well. I didn’t mind<br />

it; I just wanted to<br />

get on the field.”<br />

Although he<br />

didn’t find himself on the field<br />

all that much as a sophomore, he<br />

was grateful for the experience as<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> defeated New Bedford<br />

4-3 to win the Division 1 South<br />

Championship, then took out Andover<br />

to advance to the state title<br />

game. Unfortunately, <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

During the state title run, Mellen<br />

got his share of time on the<br />

mound with three starts, including<br />

the championship contest, and<br />

two trips out of the bullpen.<br />

“It was an honor to start the<br />

championship game, especially<br />

with so many great pitchers on this<br />

team,” Mellen said. “I just wanted<br />

to go out there and have fun. The<br />

offense made it that much easier<br />

scoring 8 runs. It will be something<br />

that I always remember.”<br />

The 6’3”, 200 lb. pitcher can<br />

throw between 86 and 92 mph<br />

and with four pitches keeps the<br />

opposition’s batters off balance.<br />

“Being a three sport athlete,<br />

he can run,” <strong>Norwood</strong> Baseball<br />

Coach Kevin Igoe said. “When he<br />

takes to the mound, I don’t have<br />

a worry in the world, I know that<br />

he’s going to go out there and get<br />

the win. As an All State player as<br />

a junior, I expect nothing less from<br />

him this year.”<br />

Mellen punched out 117 batters<br />

last season in 64 innings; an<br />

astounding 1.8 strikeouts per inning,<br />

but the senior hurler doesn’t<br />

consider himself a strikeout<br />

pitcher.<br />

“I don’t go out there trying<br />

to strike batters out, I’m just trying<br />

to throw strikes so that I can<br />

get ahead in the count,” the lefthanded<br />

pitcher said. “If I can<br />

get ahead in the count then I can<br />

give myself the advantage. If they<br />

strikeout, they strikeout, but I’m<br />

not looking for it.”<br />

Mellen’s goal this coming<br />

spring would get the team back<br />

into the tournament, while winning<br />

every time that he takes to<br />

the mound.<br />

“Last year we backed into the<br />

playoffs (<strong>Norwood</strong> was 10-10 entering<br />

the Division 1 South Tournament),<br />

I want to take this team<br />

to be one of the top 8 in the state,<br />

not just get into the tournament,”<br />

Mellen said. “As the number one<br />

pitcher I have to face the best<br />

teams out there; my goal is to win<br />

every start that I can. My job is to<br />

shut down the best teams while<br />

giving our team a chance to win.”<br />

Mellen would not only like to<br />

go out in style, but also prove to<br />

Northeastern that they made the<br />

right decision in choosing him to<br />

pitch for the Huskies.<br />

“Northeastern was the first Division<br />

1 School that showed interest<br />

in me before my season even<br />

started,” Mellen said. “They told<br />

me that I was a big lefty with composure<br />

on the mound and they<br />

liked that. I like the fact that the<br />

school is local and feel that I will<br />

be a good fit for them.”<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> Softball<br />

For the past two seasons, the<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> girls softball team has<br />

been eliminated in the Division<br />

1 South Quarter Final round of<br />

the Tournament. Two years ago<br />

after going 15-5, the Mustangs<br />

fell to Bridgewater Raynham; last<br />

spring, <strong>Norwood</strong> went an impressive<br />

19-1 and once again fell in the<br />

Quarter Finals, this time to King<br />

Philip 3-2. Although <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

has owned the Bay State Conference<br />

over the past few years, the<br />

Mustangs know that this spring it’s<br />

not going to be easy.<br />

“Despite having won six of the<br />

last seven Bay State Conference<br />

(BSC) Championships, this year<br />

is going to be tougher than the<br />

past,” <strong>Norwood</strong> Coach Carol Savino<br />

said. “We’re going to have to<br />

go up against Walpole, Natick and<br />

Dedham twice.”<br />

Having lost pitcher Katie<br />

O’Donnell and catcher Erin Garczynski<br />

to graduation, Savino<br />

knows things are not going to be<br />

easy this campaign.<br />

“When you lose your battery<br />

it’s going to be a tough season;<br />

possibly somewhat of a rebuilding<br />

year,” the <strong>Norwood</strong> Coach said.<br />

Looking to help the Mustangs<br />

to yet another BSC Championship<br />

will be tri-captains Taylor<br />

Reed, who will play first base;<br />

Alyssa Chamberlain, the team’s<br />

shortstop and Emily Bonaccorso,<br />

the centerfielder. Bonaccorso patrolled<br />

left field last season, but Savino<br />

has moved her to center due<br />

to her quickness and her ability to<br />

cover a large amount of ground,<br />

not to mention the two new corner<br />

outfielders in junior Caitlan<br />

Shaughnessy (left field) and Katie<br />

Mulligan (right field).<br />

While Reed will be at first and<br />

Chamberlain at short, <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

will also employ junior Soibhan<br />

Reen at second, a position she’s<br />

held since her freshman year, and<br />

Janelle Kelleher at third, giving the<br />

Mustangs a very sturdy infield according<br />

to the Coach.<br />

Taking over the pitching duties<br />

this season will be junior Cassie<br />

Pinciaro, and while O'Donnell is<br />

a tough act to follow, she will be<br />

effective with her teammates behind<br />

her.<br />

“Katie was a dead on pitcher<br />

who had pinpoint accuracy<br />

and averaged 12-14 strikeouts a<br />

game,” Savino said. "Cassie’s not<br />

going to get that type of production.<br />

She’s going to have to rely<br />

on her defense to play good ball<br />

behind her.”<br />

In addition to Pinciaro seeing<br />

action on the mound, <strong>Norwood</strong><br />

cannot go into the season without<br />

a back-up hurler so Savino will<br />

have two freshmen in Katie Welch<br />

and Amanda Olbrys in the wings.<br />

According to the skipper, the duo<br />

is not quite ready but will eventually<br />

be the future of Mustang softball.<br />

Behind the plate will also be<br />

another newcomer in freshman<br />

Bryn Garczynski. She can play<br />

the position well and will be able<br />

The Mustangs will be employing<br />

a lot of inexperienced athletes<br />

on the varsity level, but the coach<br />

is hoping for the best.<br />

“My goal is that we will hopefully<br />

go .500 giving these young<br />

girls some tournament experience,”<br />

Savino said. “These girls<br />

are our future and will need to<br />

come together. Our pitching is not<br />

going to be what we had last year<br />

and they will give up some runs,<br />

but they are young and will grow,”<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> Basketball Camp<br />

The <strong>Norwood</strong> High School<br />

basketball program under the<br />

guidance of Mustang Coaches<br />

Rich Cormier and Amy Lepley<br />

have announced that it will be<br />

hosting the <strong>2016</strong> <strong>Norwood</strong> Mustangs<br />

Basketball Camp. The camp<br />

will run July 11–15, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.,<br />

for any athletes (boy or girl) entering<br />

grades 1-9.<br />

The Camp will be held at the<br />

<strong>Norwood</strong> High School, and will<br />

cost $200 ($175 if paid prior to<br />

June 1). All campers will receive a<br />

shirt and individual player evaluation.<br />

All participating athletes will<br />

be divided into appropriate groups<br />

based on age and ability.<br />

The Camp staff will be onsite<br />

a 7:45 a.m., on July 11 to begin<br />

registration and will arrive at 8:15<br />

a.m., the remainder of the week to<br />

allow parents to drop off children<br />

early if needed. This extended<br />

time will allow campers the opportunity<br />

to enjoy open gym time<br />

before the start of each day’s activities.<br />

Families are invited to attend<br />

any part of the camp week.<br />

Each day’s activities will build<br />

upon the previous day in hopes<br />

of maximizing individual improvement.<br />

Each team will have<br />

an individual coach for the week<br />

and a designated coach for stations<br />

and drills. During the week,<br />

the coaches will give emphasis to<br />

shooting, rebounding, ball handling,<br />

defensive play and fundamental<br />

skills. The camp will also<br />

include a minimum of two games<br />

per day as well as a daily 3-on-3<br />

contest in addition to other competitive<br />

and fun games.<br />

The staff will include Cormier,<br />

the <strong>Norwood</strong> boys coach for the<br />

past ten years as well as girls second-year<br />

coach Lepley. Additionally,<br />

Boys JV Coach Joseph Oliver<br />

and Boys Freshmen Coach Paul<br />

Nimblett will be assisting.<br />

As with most stories, there are<br />

two sides. Some would s e the new<br />

snowfa l as (cold) beauty, while<br />

other s e a nuisance to b endured.<br />

The night was bi ter cold, but<br />

for the 20+ folks who showed up<br />

a the Franklin Public Library for<br />

the first m eting of the Genealogy<br />

Club, it was a time to talk<br />

about family co nections and<br />

countries of origin. Many participants<br />

were from Franklin, with a<br />

few from Milford, Norfolk and<br />

Be lingham. The theme of connections<br />

was consistent as each<br />

person explained their interest in<br />

participating in the group.<br />

Linda Batchelder of Franklin<br />

noted that she got interested in<br />

genealogy because of a relative’s<br />

ashes that remain in her a tic.<br />

“His name was Bertul—he died<br />

during the 1918 flu epidemic—<br />

a friend of my grandfather’s,”<br />

Batchelder began. “When my<br />

grandfather was able to return to<br />

Latvia, he wa su posed to take<br />

the ashes wit him, but wasn’t<br />

a lowed to. They’re sti l in our<br />

a tic. We learned that Bertul had<br />

b en our grandfather’s best man<br />

in his we ding and ma ried a<br />

relative of ours.”<br />

Each person had stories to<br />

share of wha they had already<br />

learned in their family research,<br />

and a l had mysteries they hoped<br />

to solve in the future. Vicki Buchanio,<br />

Head of Reference and<br />

Public Services a the Franklin<br />

Public Library told the group, “I<br />

have lots of relations who must<br />

sti l be alive—I’ve never found<br />

the death certificates for them,<br />

even though some of them were<br />

born in 1802, so they must sti l<br />

be alive!”<br />

or other situations where a child<br />

or t en with Autism or a mental<br />

health i sue has an unfortunate<br />

encounter with police officers<br />

who weren’t aware of the child’s<br />

special circumstances and fears.<br />

In these cases, a li tle knowledge<br />

can go a long way.<br />

The Ho liston Police Department<br />

aims to arm itself with<br />

that knowledge and ge to be ter<br />

know and strengthen its relationship<br />

with the co munity it<br />

serves and protects – and it n eds<br />

co munity response to make it<br />

ha pen.<br />

In January, The Ho liston<br />

Police Department launched<br />

the C.A.R.E. (Children and<br />

Residents Encounter) program,<br />

aimed at helping police gather<br />

information about member of<br />

the co munity with special<br />

n eds, to help foster a relationship<br />

with the co munity.<br />

Lt. Craig Denman is overs e-<br />

ing the program, which was officia<br />

ly launched in January.<br />

became aware of and thought<br />

would be beneficial for people<br />

in our co munity, and so we decided<br />

to develop and adopt it and<br />

Co mi t e, or AgCom,<br />

are asking a very logical question<br />

– “Is It Spring, Yet?” with<br />

their Second A nual Family<br />

Event welcoming the season on<br />

Sunday, March 2, from 12-4<br />

p.m., to take place at Br ezy<br />

Hi l Farm, 583 Adams Str et,<br />

Ho liston. As it did last year,<br />

th event wi l feature baby animals<br />

and farm-related fun for<br />

the whole family, and the suggested<br />

family donation, which<br />

wi l su port Ho liston AgCom,<br />

is just $5.<br />

“This is just a fun event for<br />

families in town, because the<br />

town i so su portive of agriculture,”<br />

says Paula Mark, member<br />

of the Agricultural Co mi sion<br />

who has lived in Ho liston for<br />

12 years on land, she says, that’s<br />

b en in her husband’s family<br />

for generations. “When we got<br />

this property, it was inevitable<br />

that I was going to turn it into<br />

a farm,” she says, explaining,<br />

with a smile, that her sma l farm<br />

has grown from just chickens to<br />

now, b es, alpacas, a horse and<br />

ra bit. The 4H leader hopes her<br />

place can someday be a place<br />

for “ kids to come to reco nect<br />

to nature and learn how to act<br />

around animals.”<br />

area of Hopedale, Milford, Mendon<br />

and Upton to spread the word<br />

to area busine ses that we were<br />

starting the Hopedale paper. They<br />

a cumulated contact information<br />

and then made a pointments<br />

for Lori Ko ler to m et with the<br />

prospective advertisers. Within a<br />

two-w ek time frame, this team<br />

knew tha the paper was going to<br />

be a succe s.<br />

“I couldn’t be more proud<br />

of these two young men for the<br />

hard work tha they put forth to<br />

make this ha pen,” says Ko ler.<br />

“Also with the help of Susa ne<br />

Ode l our Advertising A count<br />

Manager for the pas two years,<br />

and several existing advertisers,<br />

the su ce s for the first edition<br />

was even more than we had expected.”<br />

Twenty-five hundred copies of<br />

the tabloid-sized newspaper wi l<br />

be produced each month, and<br />

of charge to households and busine<br />

ses in Hopedale. The paper<br />

wi l also be available in its fu l<br />

format at w.hopedaletownnews.com<br />

starting in April.<br />

says Tashjian, who envisions his<br />

Just over six years ago,<br />

Tracey Liberatore had a<br />

vision for the property she<br />

drove by at 5 Depot Str et<br />

in Hopedale just over six<br />

years ago.<br />

“I thought it would<br />

make a cute li tle market,<br />

and we didn’t have anything<br />

like that in Hopedale,”<br />

says the Hopedale<br />

Mom and 21-year-resident<br />

of the town. And if anyone<br />

could turn that li tle<br />

shop into the kitchen of<br />

the co munity, Tracey<br />

could. She’d worked in<br />

the f od industry since she<br />

was a t en, later partnering<br />

t open a pub in Milford<br />

ca led “One Flight Down,”<br />

through which Liberatore<br />

began her pa sion for f od<br />

and catering. The Courtyard in<br />

Milford a preciated her talents<br />

so much they asked her to run<br />

its restaurant, and she later came<br />

back to lead the kitchen, wi ning<br />

the Ma rio t Diamond A sociate<br />

and Make a Di ference Awards.<br />

Busy wit her two boys, Liberatore<br />

started slo wit her<br />

new li tle market. Pre ty s on,<br />

she built a su ce sfu luncheon<br />

busine s.<br />

“I think we have a real home<br />

f eling,” says Tracey. “It’s very<br />

comfy, like you’re walking into<br />

your grandmother’s<br />

kitchen. It’s cozy, and<br />

there are sme ls (o f od<br />

c oking).”<br />

Liberatore and her<br />

sta f c ok a l of the<br />

dishes right on the premises.<br />

“We do a lot of<br />

homemade soups and<br />

salads, everything from<br />

scratch,” says Liberatore.<br />

“We even roast<br />

our turkeys here, make<br />

meatba ls, and we o fer<br />

di ners, including<br />

chicken Marsala and<br />

b ef stew,” she says.<br />

In fact, Hopedale<br />

residents and local busine<br />

ses have begun to<br />

take advantage of the<br />

catering options, an area<br />

Liberatore is excited to<br />

grow.<br />

“We do a lot of catering,”<br />

says Liberatore, who can provide<br />

Council were brainstorming for<br />

an artistic, cultural even that<br />

music-related, something that<br />

drew people from a l di ferent<br />

ages and backgrounds. The result?<br />

The Mi lis Film Festival.<br />

This year, it’s back, and the<br />

Second A nual Mi lis Film Festival’s<br />

ever from local busine ses and<br />

organizations. This year’s event,<br />

which wi l take place on Saturday<br />

March 7, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. wi l<br />

feature 16 films, nine in the adult<br />

category and seven from Mi dle<br />

Sch ol fil makers, The Film<br />

Festival wi l be held in the Roche<br />

Brothers Co munity r om a the<br />

Mi lis Public Library, 961 Main<br />

Str et, Mi lis.<br />

ensemble, production crew and<br />

pit band for the musical, Grease<br />

this month, to be presented from<br />

March 12-14, at 7:30 p.m.<br />

The musical features an a ray<br />

of characters, singing an dancing<br />

their way through their senior year<br />

at Ri de l High Sch ol. The show,<br />

with music and lyrics wri ten by<br />

Jim Jacobs and Wa ren Casey, is<br />

fu l of energy and includes comedy,<br />

romance, and the great sounds<br />

of the 1950’s. The popula rockn-ro<br />

l musical numbers, including<br />

“Greased Lightning,” “We Go Together”<br />

and “Shaken’ a the High<br />

Sch ol Hop” wi l have the audience<br />

moving to the beat.<br />

“I’m rea ly excited to put on<br />

this production. It wa something<br />

the students had b en angling for<br />

a number of years,” says director<br />

and MHS English teacher Spencer<br />

Christie. “When the music director<br />

(Kendra Nu ting) and I sat down<br />

over the su mer, we thought it<br />

was the perfect fit, the perfect<br />

score.”<br />

Each spring the MHS Musical<br />

presents a fu l-scale musical comprising<br />

of Medway High Sch ol<br />

students. The MHS Musical a lows<br />

students to be directly involved in<br />

acting, singing an dancing onstage,<br />

playing in our pit band, and<br />

various o portunities o f-stage as<br />

we l.<br />

The cast alone for this productio<br />

numbers 50, says Christie,<br />

with another 50 students working<br />

backstage as crew. Two students<br />

wi l play in the orchestra pit, although<br />

due to the complexity of<br />

the music, “we have hired some<br />

profe sional musicians as we l,”<br />

says Christie.<br />

Lead roles were chosen by audition,<br />

and these cast members include<br />

both experienced and novice<br />

players.<br />

“I’ve only ever done acting at<br />

Medway High Sch ol,” says Cam<br />

Swan, cast in the role as “Da ny.”<br />

“I’ve never taken any voice le sons<br />

or anything like that.”<br />

The role, says Swan, is di ferent<br />

from anything he’s done in<br />

the past. Da ny is “kind of complicated,<br />

he puts on thi show for<br />

a l his friends, but when you rea ly<br />

local residen thinks parents are<br />

uninformed abou the new education<br />

standards and the a companying<br />

tests being considered by the<br />

state of Ma sachuse ts. He hopes<br />

to bring the polarizing i sue to the<br />

forefront at Norfolk Town M eting<br />

and on the town election ballot.<br />

The United States is embarking<br />

on an unprecedented journey<br />

to unify education standards for a l<br />

students in kindergarten through<br />

12th grade. Known as the Common<br />

Core State Standards Initiative,<br />

these standard set co mon<br />

education benchmarks acro s the<br />

country in order to prepare students<br />

for co lege and the workforce.<br />

The Co mon Core uses the<br />

Partnership for A se sment of<br />

Readine s for Co lege and Car<br />

ers, or the PAR C exam, to test<br />

ho we l students have learned the<br />

new cu riculum. In Ma sachuse ts,<br />

the PAR C exam wi l eventua ly<br />

replace the Ma sachuse ts Comprehensive<br />

A se sment System,<br />

or MCAS test.<br />

Norfolk resident Patrick<br />

Touhey would like to pu the<br />

brakes on the PAR C test and<br />

force discu sion of the new standards<br />

and whether or no the<br />

Norfolk and King Philip sch ols<br />

should implemen them. Touhey<br />

wi l be placing an article on the<br />

Norfolk Town M eting wa rant<br />

to remove Co mon Core and<br />

PAR C testing from the sch ols<br />

in a non-binding vote. He is also<br />

a tempting to get enough signatures<br />

to place the question on the<br />

ba lot for the town election this<br />

spring.<br />

Touhey hopes these actions<br />

wi l send a me sage to local sch ol<br />

co mi t es and the State Department<br />

of Education: “We don’t<br />

agr e with the PAR C testing and<br />

Co mon Core cu riculum.” He<br />

wants the local sch ols to return to<br />

a w ek of nature i mersion that<br />

doesn’t involve snow. The King<br />

Philip Science National Honor<br />

Society wi l be hosting naturalist<br />

Brent Nixon during the w ek of<br />

March 17 to 24. Several events<br />

are pla ned for the sch ols and<br />

the tri-town area.<br />

Nixon, a renowned science<br />

educator, has dedicated his life<br />

to endangered species research.<br />

Known for his high energy, interpretive<br />

science shows, Nixon<br />

travels extensively to promote<br />

environmental education. In<br />

a dition to his research work<br />

and publications, Nixon has appeared<br />

on TV, radio, and in print<br />

media.<br />

The Naturalist-in-Residence<br />

w ek was the idea of A n Lambert,<br />

a science teacher at KP<br />

High Sch ol and the advisor for<br />

the sch ol’s Science National<br />

Honor Society. Lambert had<br />

traveled to Alaska on a cruise<br />

and Nixon was the naturalist on<br />

board.<br />

“His pa sion for his work,<br />

knowledge about his topics,<br />

and vivacious, entertaining,<br />

and informational presentation<br />

style was what made me think it<br />

would be a great o portunity for<br />

the KP students and co munity<br />

if we could bring him here,” said<br />

Lambert.<br />

Lambert believes that when<br />

students actua ly m et scientists<br />

and interact with them, science<br />

becomes interesting and fun.<br />

Nixon’s expertise on wildlife and<br />

field research should prov eyeopening<br />

to students who spend<br />

most of their time learning about<br />

And with it come some big<br />

name stores the area has b en<br />

waiting for, including Target (set<br />

t open March 4, s e related story<br />

on page 13) and Wegmans, both<br />

of which wi l anchor the complex.<br />

University Station, when<br />

fu ly complete, is expected to<br />

include a proximately 50, 0<br />

square f et of retail and restaurant<br />

space, along with residential<br />

apartments and more.<br />

from coming in after a local state<br />

representative ca led for a home<br />

rule petition to a prove the liquor<br />

license for Wegmans at what was<br />

then known as Westw od Station.<br />

This ha pened just as the<br />

legislature was ready to move<br />

ahead with the a proval. A the<br />

time, some local representatives<br />

were concerned about giving<br />

Wegmans an advantage over<br />

Roche Bros. Both Wegmans and<br />

Roche Bros wer eventua ly able<br />

to secure b er and wine licenses<br />

in the spring of 2012. Westw od<br />

Special Town M eting a proved<br />

the long-awaited project back in<br />

<strong>May</strong>, 2013. Developers broke<br />

ground on the project six months<br />

later.<br />

University Station is being<br />

developed by New England Development,<br />

along with Eastern<br />

Real Estate and National Development.<br />

England Development said in a<br />

formal statement. “University<br />

Register O’Donnell Warns Homeowners<br />

About Deed Scam<br />

Continuing his efforts to combat<br />

consumer fraud, Norfolk<br />

County Register of Deeds William<br />

P. O’Donnell recently expressed<br />

his ongoing frustration regarding<br />

Norfolk County residents who<br />

continue to receive direct-mail solicitations<br />

offering them a certified<br />

copy of their property deed for an<br />

exorbitant fee ranging anywhere<br />

from $59.50-$83.00.<br />

Register O’Donnell stated<br />

“These companies are making<br />

outrageous profits. If a consumer<br />

knew that the Registry of Deeds<br />

would provide them a certified<br />

copy of a property deed for a<br />

charge of only $1.00 per page,<br />

plus an additional $1.00 for postage,<br />

they would never agree to pay<br />

The Registry has heard numerous<br />

stories from Norfolk<br />

County residents about examples<br />

of receiving deed solicitation notices<br />

from a California private<br />

company. The solicitation was labeled<br />

Recorded Deed Notice and<br />

requested that the homeowner<br />

forward a check to them in the<br />

amount of $83.00 for a copy of<br />

their deed. A Braintree resident,<br />

who received the solicitation, notified<br />

the Registry about the advertisement<br />

instead of spending<br />

$83.00.<br />

Register O’Donnell stated,<br />

“While the practice may be legal,<br />

it’s certainly not ethical. Clearly<br />

these direct-mail companies are<br />

preying upon the innocent assumptions<br />

of Norfolk County<br />

residents, many of whom are<br />

first-time homeowners or elderly.<br />

Consumers are interpreting these<br />

notices as a bill, since they are affixed<br />

with a due date. I urge Norfolk<br />

County citizens not to fall prey<br />

to these types of misleading deed<br />

scam advertisements.”<br />
