Imagine walking into a
quaint country store situated
in an 1890 Sanilac County
farmhouse and finding
something that takes you
back to the days of your
youth. Several customers
of “Sunshiners Gift, Garden,
and Antiques” of Sandusky,
Michigan have marveled at
one of a number of old-time
hand-crank phonographs or
gramophones that have been
for sale. The owners are more
than willing to put on a record
and play a song or two, much
to the delight of the guests,

most of whom cannot resist taking a spin around the
room to the tunes of their youth.
Sanilac County is rich in a supply of antiques and
collectibles at numerous businesses and other venues.
While many visitors can delight in recapturing a bit of
their youth, baby-boomers and millennials are also
attracted by the great values that exist. One never knows
what can be found among the many shops, flea markets,
estate sales, or yard sales.
Featured in the photograph is a 1903 Alethetone
gramophone that was produced by the former Stevens
Organ and Piano Company of Marietta, Ohio. The item
was obtained from a Bay City, Michigan estate sale
and is in mint condition. An advertisement from 1903
states that the Alethetone is “Built like a violin, the tone
chamber gives forth tones of brilliant purity and a degree
of resonance and strength that is absolutely astounding”.
