Get ready to love every view of you!
a revolutionary
body treatment used by
“COOLSCULPTING,”
thousands of women and men all
over the world, will trim that muffin top, get rid of
that bulging stomach, remove the batwing fat, and
sculpt those knees without the downtime associated
with traditional liposuction.
How is that possible? Well, Plastic Surgery
Center of Hampton Roads has new, cutting-edge
CoolSculpting systems that will help resolve your
figure issues with a treatment area completed in just
over one hour!
How COOL is that?
Does it work? Yes, it does. I tried it myself for
the purpose of research for this article.
Does it hurt? No, there’s only a slight discomfort
when the cooling gel is applied and then a suction
action is experienced on the area being treated.
2 | Williamsburg What’s Up? Magazine Spring Issue 2016
What exactly happens? First, you make an appointment
to see if your area of concern will benefit
from this process and speak with a surgeon and
a CoolSculpt certified clinical staff member who
will go over the entire procedure with you. Prior to
treatment, “Before” pictures are taken, for reference
only. Then you are escorted to your own private
room with a TV, Wi-Fi, and all the amenities you
can think of, like a heated blanket and tea with
honey. Sit back, relax, and in one hour you’re done.
Two areas can be treated in one session, and additional
areas can be treated in the next hour.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a 100% nonsurgical fat reduction
treatment that uses the power of cooling to
permanently get rid of troublesome fat cells. Using
Cryolipolysis technology, the heat from the fat cells
is cooled down to a temperature where they break
down. Once those cells are dead, they will naturally
be eliminated from your body over a period of three
months. That’s it! Surrounding skin, muscle, and
tissue remain unaffected.
It’s a great option for reducing small to moderate
bulges on the hips, tummy, or thighs without surgery.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure for more
dramatic fat reduction and body sculpting and can
be performed anywhere on the body.
Tired of battling the bulge, but not quite ready
for surgery? CoolSculpting can help you slim down
and get rid of stubborn fat … for good!
Call 757-873-3500 to make an appointment for
a free consultation.
Once you try this, you’ll want more. The principle
behind the technology assures frozen fat cells are
eliminated from the body over the next 30-60 days.
Those fat cells, once gone, will never return, so say
goodbye to those bulges. They won’t be back.
Stacey Mathias, RN, BSN, clinical coordinator
and certified CoolSculpt technician, said, “If you
can squeeze it, we can freeze it.” She added, “We are
like one big family here,” which is evidenced by the
• It requires no needles, surgery, or downtime.
• Treatment takes one to two hours.
• Results are permanent as long as you maintain
a stable body weight.
• CoolSculpting is the No.1 nonsurgical fat reduction
procedure.
convivial atmosphere and charming staff greetings.
After my treatment, I went back to work and resumed
my normal activities while my body worked
on eliminating those unwanted, accumulated fat
cells. Six weeks later at my follow-up checkup, I
was astounded to see the results in both inches and
pounds. So was the staff at the Plastic Surgery Center!
I can’t wait for my next 30-day recheck.
My mantra has become: “Fie on you, mirror,
mirror on the wall, as I am the coolest sculpted of
all! Everyone has noticed how great I look, and I
didn’t even tell anyone I had CoolSculpting!”
No longer fear that swimsuit or tight outfit that
displays fatty deposits. This one-of-a-kind procedure
will take care of it all.
GIVE THREE CHEERS
FOR A PAINLESS YEAR
Meet Mary-Jane Bell Amrein, owner
and developer of The Pilates Center in
Williamsburg. At this premier facility
you will meet one-on-one with Mary-Jane, whose
technique includes modern exercise science and
rehabilitation principles
that emphasize the neutral
alignment of core stability
and peripheral mobility
based upon original techniques
developed by Joseph
Pilates.
As a devoted lifelong
learner, Mary-Jane has
spent over 35 years in the
fitness field, starting in
1981 as an aerobics instructor
and opening her own
gym, Aerobics Plus, in 1984.
She has been trained by “the best in the business,”
Dr. Ken Cooper, who owns an aerobic
training center in Dallas, Texas. And in 2002, she
worked with Greg Roskopf to further explore why
Mary-Jane
Amrein
some of her Pilates clients had difficulty performing
certain exercises. He taught her about neuromuscular
inhibition. Mary-Jane concluded that if certain
muscles were turned off or neurologically inhibited,
they could be
recruited or
strengthened.
Muscle
Activation
Technique
(MAT) has
been an
underlying
success for
her Pilates
clients,
because now
people who
had pain
or muscle
dysfunction
caused
by muscle
compensation
can be
“rewired”
so as to
Mary-Jane
holds a display
of spinal bones.
finally reduce their pain and increase muscle range
and strength. This is usually accomplished in four
sessions before a person is ready to begin strengthening
the muscles with Pilates exercises. With this
winning formula, Mary-Jane has been able to help
her clients achieve greater muscle strength and freedom
from pain.
The Pilates exercises focus on maintaining the
integrity of the spine. The spine has four curves that
must be maintained in order to function effectively.
Pilates equipment uses spring resistance, which
provides a lengthening of the muscle and rotational
and arching patterns, which is how the human
body moves. This cutting-edge therapy encourages
the body to develop joint stabilizer muscles that
enable the body to handle its body weight and
movement.
You feel younger and function better in your
day-to-day activity because the spine is upright and
strong! Mary-Jane’s passion is obvious from the
moment she begins to explain the skeleton and its
8 | Williamsburg What’s Up? Magazine Spring Issue 2016
curves, which most people
are erroneously taught to
straighten not strengthen.
Her interview became a
complete lesson on the
skeleton and musculature
activation.
After intense therapy,
her clients can move on
to a specifically designed
Pilates program for their
particular needs. You can
target areas weakened by
sports, accidents, or the
aging process.
Listen to Mary-Jane’s satisfied clients:
“As a 50+ mile a week runner, I had been utilizing
Pilates as a great way to strengthen my core. When
relocating to Williamsburg it was a priority for me to
find a Pilates studio. I call The Pilates Center ‘my oasis.’
Mary-Jane really encouraged me to take my workouts
to a higher level, which has been a tremendous
help. While Mary-Jane is a real wonder, the Pilates
Center, from its other instructors to all the clients I
have met, has been kind and welcoming - it has really
been a blessing to me.
“After seeing me repeatedly come to class with
K-Tape on from running injuries, Mary-Jane suggested
I try to solve my problem with Muscle Activation.
It wasn't until a recurring injury forced me to stop
running that I called Mary-Jane in desperation. I was
a true believer in the benefits and cure after my first
session! After a couple of additional sessions I was back
to running.
“Recently, my husband had another round of bad
back pain that was affecting his quality of life and
his golf game. Wanting to
avoid surgery, he tried Muscle
Activation with Mary-Jane
and is now taking Pilates. As
an eternal skeptic, his endorsement
means a lot, and
he can't believe the benefits!
When Mary-Jane asked him
what took him so long to come
to The Pilates Center, he simply
said, ‘I may be late to the
party, but at least I'm here!’’”
— Marcia M.
“I had chronic back and
neck pain develop due to
degenerative disc disease. I’m
now relatively pain free, and
when I do experience pain I
recover in 1-2 days instead
of a week or more.”
— Kristen S.
“I’ve had severe muscle issues caused by scoliosis.
MAT has enabled me to preempt painful recurrences
and my Pilates workouts help to keep me strong and
functional.”
— Diane L.
“Muscle Activation has worked wonderfully for me.
At my annual physical my doctor couldn’t believe the
range of motion in my hips, especially with my past
three back surgeries. She and I believe it is due to Muscle
Activation and Pilates.”
— Pat C.
Bourbon and Garlic Parm flavored wings.” Brickhouse
Tavern was ranked at No. 7 in the www.onlyinyourstate.com
site stated, “The wings here can be ordered all on their
own or part of a delicious platter complete with nachos,
In addition, BuzzFeed Community’s readers chose
Brickhouse Tavern as No. 21 across the country, stating
Testimonials:
“Love this place. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun.
The food is amazing. You have to try the Jose wings - a
little spice and a little sweet. Get a pizza to go with the
wings. They have specials every day on food and drinks.”
“I stayed in Williamsburg for 6 months. This was my
hangout for a drink and fun date night. It is casual ... the
servers are always sweethearts ... not too expensive ... good
food ... but it just has a great VIBE ... you know?”
“If you are in Williamsburg, this is an absolutely mustgo
place! I went to College of William and Mary, so this
was my favorite of all the deli’s/bars in the city ...Their
most popular item is the Chicken Wing - Jose. I have traveled
through NYC, DC, Columbus, Richmond, Orlando,
etc. These are the best wings I ever had ... I miss Brickhouse
already.”

The Hound’s Tale invites you to
an ‘eclectric’ experience !
By Wynne Bowman
The Hound’s Tale, which opened in late 2015, is a bar and
restaurant unlike any other on the Williamsburg scene.
“We did something different,” said owner Don Pratt, “but
we wanted to keep a warm atmosphere where people would want to
visit, stay, and return.”
Don, who also co-owns Aromas Coffeeshop with his wife Geri, has
been overwhelmed with the community’s reception of The Hound’s
Tale. “We are extremely grateful,” he said. “Everyone has helped to enhance
this new energy.” There is a team of professionals that is dedicated
to The Hound’s Tale, ensuring that the atmosphere, environment,
cocktail list, and cuisine are all individualistic and above par.
Award-winning bartenders and professionally trained chefs have
brought Don and Geri’s “eclectric” intentions to life. As the owners
of several Great Danes through the years, Don and Geri were inspired by the experiences that each furry family-member
provided. “Each dog that we have owned provided its own personality and place in our lives. Therefore,
each dog had its own tale to tell. Each tale was different; each one was good. Some tales lasted longer than others,
and all of them made a contribution to our lives,” exclaimed Don. “It’s a warm concept to have the hound as part of
our business,” he continued, and this warmth is reflected in the restaurant.
The Hound’s Tale invites you to an experience different from any other in Williamsburg. “Come see us,” Don
says, urging you to create a tale of your own!
Hear ye! Hear ye!
The trials of the hard-of-hearing
By Robbie Steele
I
am deaf.
I have always been deaf. My father was deaf, but
he was old - or so I thought at the time. But I was just
a kid, five years old, when my first-grade teacher started
taking me aside during recess to work on making my
speech distinguishable. I was frightened by the specter
of deafness. I pretended to hear.
During class, I’d smile and nod
along with the other kids, even
when I had no idea what was going
on. I wanted to have friends. I
didn’t want to be singled out.
The desire to fit in grew stronger
every year, and my attempts to
hide my problem were sad: sitting
in front of the classroom and still
not hearing; asking people to
repeat what they’d said and still
not catching on; and, I imagine,
one of the most common errors of
the deaf, speaking and seeing by
everybody’s reaction that what I had said made no sense.
My moderate deafness escalated to profound or total
deafness whenever I suffered one of my frequent ear infections.
When I was in high school, I got up one morning
and realized I couldn’t hear anything. I didn’t want
to be carted off to visit my ear-nose-throat specialist to
have my eardrums lanced again, a painful procedure used
before the advent of tubes in ears.
So I skirted around my parents, climbed on the
school bus, and decided that anytime a teacher asked me
a question I couldn’t hear, I would reply “I don’t know,”
thinking that would be a reasonable answer to anything.
That response, however, turned out to be disastrous,
because the first time I used it, everyone in the class burst
out laughing.
I could not hear workers who were using drills down
the hall, and the teacher had teasingly asked me if that
racket was my heart beating. When I replied that I didn’t
know, the class thought that I, too, was joking. The kids
laughed, and I dissolved in tears. My parents were called,
and I ended up back at the doctor’s office. Within that
one school year, my eardrums were lanced 12 times.
But this is not a poor-me tale. Sure, I was deaf. But
that was not my handicap. My handicap was my refusal
to acknowledge my hearing loss and reach out for the
help that was available, instead making futile attempts to
hide my problem.
The profoundly and totally deaf have formed deaf cultural
groups in cities and towns worldwide. They gather
and communicate using sign language, sharing art, entertainment,
history, and any
news that might impact them.
And they maintain a positive
attitude toward deafness and
pride in their deaf identity.
In some ways I believe they
are more fortunate than we
hard-of-hearing people who
delay getting hearing aids, telling
ourselves that our hearing
is not that bad (it is). Or that
the aids are too expensive (no
more than many necessities).
Or that hearing aids will make
us look old (nearly invisible aids are available). We stubbornly
muddle through, denying the impact this struggle
is having on us and our families and friends.
Deafness has always existed. Early perceptions were
dismal. “Timeline: History of the Deaf community,”
available on the web, states that in 1000 BC, “Hebrew
law provides that the deaf have limited rights to property
and marriage.” In 360 BC, Socrates said, “... Deaf people
are incapable of language and ideas,” with Aristotle adding
this in 355 BC, “Those who are born deaf all become
senseless and incapable of reason.” Those beliefs, which
persisted for hundreds of years, were exacerbated in 345
AD after St. Augustine proclaimed to early Christians
that “deaf children are a sign of God’s anger at the sins of
their parents.”
The Bible references the deaf more than a dozen
times, but in a caring manner, with God admonishing
those who would demean a deaf, mute, or blind person.
Exodus 4:11: “...Who has made man’s mouth? Or who
makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I,
the Lord?” Leviticus 19:14: “You shall not curse a deaf
18 | Williamsburg What’s Up? Magazine Spring Issue 2016
Hearing trumpets were the only aids available
for the deaf until the early 1900s.
man, nor place a stumbling block before the blind, but
you shall revere your God; I am the Lord.”
During the Dark and Middle ages, the deaf were
committed to asylums “because of speech and behavior
... thought to be possessed by demons” (“Deaf Culture
Timeline/Sign Language Interpreters,” on the web).
Enlightenment
finally began in
the 1500s, as sign
languages were
developed and
the deaf taught to
speak.
Eventually,
schools for the
deaf opened
around the world,
and deaf people
married, had
families, and began
their march
to equality. The
invention in 1892
of an electric hearing aid weighing several pounds (it sat
on a desk) gave deaf people amplified sound for the first
time. Technology advanced through the years, and with
the passage of the American for Disabilities Act in 1990,
the deaf began to claim their place in society and are now
renowned in many fields.
Lou Ferrigno, an actor and bodybuilder best known
for his title role in “The Incredible Hulk,” wears hearing
aids in both ears. He sets an example for us all. He’d lost
80% of his hearing by age three because of ear infections,
and as a result of being bullied, became withdrawn and
extremely shy. Ferrigno picked up his first barbell when
he was 12, fantasizing about building up his skinny
physique and standing up to his harassers. Still in his
teens, he began winning bodybuilding titles, eventually
being named IFBB Mr. Universe twice, before turning to
acting. He says, “If I hadn’t lost my hearing, I wouldn’t
be where I am today. It forced me to maximize my own
potential. I have to be better than the average person to
succeed.”
Most people are kind, even eager to help anyone with
a visible handicap: a person with a walker, in a wheelchair,
or carrying a cane. But when you have an invisible handicap
like deafness, people can be rude. Occasionally, people
have responded to me with abrupt, strident tones when
I’ve asked them to repeat what they’ve said. I’m sure this
would rank No.1 on a list of the complaints of the deaf.
Other negatives: I avoid crowds and noisy venues because
the noise drowns out voices; I am sometimes ignored
during conversations; I enjoy music, but I have to resort to
Google to discern the lyrics; the telephone is my enemy.
But these are minor irritations. Living with deafness,
I have learned that the majority of people are kind. I’ve
also learned that it’s good to laugh at myself. (My kids
love this one.)
Thankfully, the positives in my life far outweigh the
negatives. I have a loving husband and family. I sing
(well, I try), dance, travel, read (it’s an addiction!). I
enjoy Monday water aerobics with two of my daughters,
Wednesday movies with my friends, and Sunday church
services at Fort Eustis. I sleep soundly, not bothered by
snoring, dripping faucets, or barking dogs.
I’ve always had jobs that I’m suited for and have appreciated
the friendliness and solicitude of my co-workers.
I worked at The Virginia Gazette for 21 years, and
I have to mention the kindness of sports reporter John
Harvey, who sat behind me and never wavered in coming
forward to be my ears when I needed help. Serendipitously,
after I left the Gazette, I signed on with Gary Balogh,
the publisher at What’s Up! Magazine, who valued
my skills beyond my deafness.
And atop the positives, because this affects the entire
deaf population: We are able to keep up with our family
and friends via email, Facebook, texting, and messaging.
Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf stated: “Instant messaging
and chat rooms have basically created a level playing field
for deaf people.”
The Hearing Loss Association
of America ranks hearing loss as
the third most common physical
affliction after arthritis and heart
disease (who knew?), with about
48 million Americans reporting
some hearing loss. It is estimated
that at age 65, one out of three
This child chose a redand-blue
hearing aid.
people is hard of hearing. But
deafness is no longer confined to
the elderly. Gen Xers are now developing
hearing loss in greater numbers, and 30 schoolchildren
per 1,000 are estimated to have a hearing loss.
Depression ranks high among the hard of hearing,
with several studies on the web reporting that depression
is less frequent among those who do wear hearing aids.
Thus, a boost in hearing level can be life-changing, with
one important caveat: Hearing aids do NOT restore normal
hearing. However, improved hearing gives kids and adults
alike a greater sense of safety and independence and makes
them more carefree and self-confident, better able to connect
with family, friends, and colleagues.
If you have deaf family members or friends you’d like
to help:
• Don’t SHOUT! Clear enunciation is key.
• Patience is a virtue. The deaf cannot “just try harder.”
• Look deaf people in the eye when speaking. They
may be lip-reading.
• Don’t whisper, mumble, cover your mouth, or talk
while you’re chewing food.
• If they don’t hear you, repeat or rephrase.
Pen and paper are good.
For 8 years, I had been wearing hearing
aids that were not strong enough to correct my
hearing loss, and then What’s Up! Magazine
ran a story last issue about Colonial Center for
Hearing. After reading that Dr. Liptak and Dr.
Tucker undergo extensive training each month
to provide the most up-to-date care possible, and
that the center offers the best hearing aid selection
in a 150-mile radius, I made an appointment.
I was seen by Dr. Tucker in January. She explained each
procedure along with the specifics that pertained to my
deafness and showed me a graph delineating that I have a
moderate loss in one ear, severe in the other. The Colonial
Center audiologist has made the difference between
my new hearing aids that boost my hearing to the 76%
range and my old hearing aids, an inadequate stand-in.
My new aids are equipped with a telecoil, or T-coil, and
I decided to find out more about them. Dr. David Myers,
a psychology professor at Michigan’s Hope College, lives
with a hearing loss and has long been a proponent of the
telecoil technology. I logged onto his site (www.davidmyers.org)
and clicked on his August 28, 2015, Wall Street
Journal essay extolling the benefits of telecoils.
Dr. Myers was in an abbey in Scotland’s Isle of Iona in
1999 when he used the T-coil switch on his hearing aids for
the first time. He wrote: “I could hear a crystal-clear voice
speaking ... The experience took me to the verge of tears.”
For a T-coil to work, the venue must be equipped with
a hearing loop, a wire that circles a room and transmits the
sound to the telecoil. The loops can be beneficial in many
venues, such as theaters, sports arenas, places of worship,
and offices. In an article in The Hearing Journal of May
2006, Dr. Myers said that he had installed a loop
system in his home. “If you were to watch TV
with me, you would hear the TV speaker sound
at whatever level you wished; I would hear the
TV ... at my choice of volume.”
Most new hearing aids include the telecoil
switch, and the technology is available anyplace
that posts the T-coil sign (pictured at left). Hearing
aids also come in bright, fun colors, even in
glitter (one of my friends wanted me to go red!),
and in a range of styles. Waterproof and water-resistant
aids are now available, as are extended-wear aids.
“Do it now!” former Gazette publisher Bill O’Donovan
used to tell me as deadlines approached. “Do it now!” And
I pass that advice on to those like me who live with a hearing
loss: “Do it now!” Go to Colonial Center for Hearing,
get tested and fitted, and live a richer, happier life.
Dr. Liptak said, “We don’t seem to appreciate our
favorite sounds until after we have lost the capacity to hear
them. We don’t realize that when we ask people to repeat
themselves or when listening to our favorite music that our
quality of life is closely connected to our ability to hear.”
A Pinterest post states: “Being deaf does not make you
dumb, just as being hearing does not make you smart.”
Be smart! Call 757-229-4004 or go online to www.williamsburghears.com
and make an appointment.
By Kathleen Stanco
This is truly a unique, homegrown, "all
in the family" business. Meet Ruthie
and Woody Mitchell, the proud owners
of Blinds Galore, who have been in the
blinds, shade, and shutter business for 48 years.
“It all began in our garage in 1968," said Ruthie,
“and we just kept growing."
Woody was an electrical designer for ships in
Newport News. Taking this skill forward, he
decided to open his own business with a contact
in textiles. That was the beginning of his
empire, and the couple's son and daughter-inlaw
are now in the business.
Graber, Hunter Douglas, ® Cellular, Pleated, Romans,
Their presence in Williamsburg is notable
because of their strong attention to customer
service. They are a custom-based business,
meeting the needs of their clients by finding the
perfect window coverings to address privacy
and lighting in
homes, churches
or businesses.
This is a science,
from the tilt of
the blind or size
of the shutter to
the number of
slats, as to how
much light they
admit and the
Most people today want clean
of fabric. The people at Blinds Galore
measure and install for free and use
top-of-the-line products from highend
manufacturers such as Hunter
was delicious.
It
consists of
fresh mixed
grilled
vegetables
with a slice of fresh tomato and fresh mozzarella cheese
sprinkled with extra virgin olive oil. The vegetables were
perfectly cooked and the slice of mozzarella really made
the dish pop. I would definitely order this again.”
with wild
was the best risotto I have ever had. The scallops were
cooked to perfection and the crabmeat was succulent.
The proportions were large enough to take home. I recommend
this restaurant to all of my friends. We will
It’s tender
John Glaser (center), accompanied by his son, Robert (right), is thanked by Michel Charbonnier, general consul of France for Virginia.
John Glaser
named a knight of the
French Legion
of Honor
By Robbie Steele
hat was the greatest and finest
“Tmoment of my life,” Adolf Hitler
stated, relishing the German victory over
France as he stood at Napoleon’s tomb in
Paris. On June 22, 1940, France had surrendered
and signed an armistice with Germany
after being overwhelmed by Nazi forces.
World War II had been raging since the
German invasion of Poland in 1939, but
the victory over France was momentous to
Hitler. He had fostered a virulent hatred for France for twenty-two
years, ever since Germany had been forced to sign an
armistice with France and Britain to end World War I. Now,
Hitler had his revenge.
William Shirer, author of “The Rise and Fall of the Third
Reich,” was present as France signed the armistice. He described
Hitler’s facial expression: “grave, solemn, yet brimming with revenge
... a sort of scornful, inner joy at being present at this great
reversal he himself had wrought.” (www.historyinanhour)
After the fall of France, Hitler intensified his efforts to
take over Europe, directing massive airstrikes against Britain
and invasions into Russia. Although neither of those countries
yielded, by early 1942 Nazi Germany ruled nearly all
of Europe. It would take several more long years before the
war would begin to turn around, with the largest seaborne
invasion in history on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
The 111th Field Artillery approached Omaha Beach on DUKWs.
“The eyes of the world are upon you,” Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower,
supreme commander of Allied forces in Western Europe,
wrote in a June 6 letter to the troops. He encouraged them: “The free
men of the world are marching together to Victory!”
On that date, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along
the coastline of the beaches of Normandy to push the Germans
out of France. The 50-mile stretch of the coast was divided into five
beachheads: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword Beach, with the
American forces assigned to take the Utah and Omaha beaches.
John Glaser had been drafted into the Army on April 12,
1941, and was serving as a medic in the 111th Field Artillery Battalion,
29th Infantry Division, which had orders to take Omaha
Beach. The 29th was in the first assault wave to hit Normandy.
Referring to the advance wave of infantry, the Army record states:
“... within minutes of the ramps being lowered ... Every officer
and sergeant had been killed or wounded.”
The 111th Field Artillery, which was to follow the infantry
regiment onshore, had been loaded into 13 DUKW amphibious
trucks, which were dropped 12 miles from the beach. As the
DUKWs advanced in the midst of a turbulent storm, some
were swamped by towering waves and sank; others were downed
by firepower from Germans entrenched in high bluffs on the
beach. Not one made landfall.
Glaser and other survivors scrambled aboard a motorized barge
(Rhino) to get to shore, but it became stuck on an underwater
obstruction, and the German artillery crippled the barge. Lt.
Col. Thornton Mullins, commander of the battalion, shouted,
“To hell with our artillery mission. We’ve got to be infantrymen
now.”
As the terrified soldiers abandoned the equipment on the
barge and jumped overboard, some drowned, some were killed
by machine gun fire, and Col. Mullins was cut down by a sniper.
Those who struggled ashore encountered heavy firepower,
landmines, and other obstacles set in place by the Germans.
Omaha was the most heavily defended beach. It became
a bloody scene. The fighting was fierce, and the casualties
were higher than all the other beaches combined. (wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Overlord)
In time, that beachhead
would become known as “Omaha the Bloody.”
Medics were at particular risk. As they crouched unarmed,
tending to the wounded and dying, the Red Cross symbols on
their armbands were perfect targets for German snipers. Nonetheless,
Mr. Glaser modestly says of his service that he was not a
hero. He was simply answering his country’s call. He added, “If
you weren’t scared once there, you were crazy.”
There were more than 9,000 Allied casualties on D-Day, but
by the night of June 6, Allied powers had taken all five beachheads.
The sacrifice of the lost and wounded allowed more than 100,000
soldiers to land over the next several days. By June 17, more than a
half-million Allied troops
had arrived to turn back
Hitler’s troops.
Once off the beach,
Sgt. Glaser’s unit was
engaged in combat almost
daily, in Saint-Lo and
through much of France.
On VE Day, his unit was
on the Elbe River, and
after Germany surrendered,
the 29th Infantry
Division was part of the
Army of Occupation.
On September 7, 1945,
Glaser returned home to
“Wwas: 60,000 American soldiers were laid to rest
on French soil,” stated Michel Charbonnier, the general consul
of France for Virginia. He was speaking at the Ceremonie de
Remise de la Legion d’Honneur (presentation ceremony) held
January 29, 2016, at the Hampton Inn & Suites to honor
John Glaser, now 97. The event was attended by Nicolas
Valcour, honorary consul of France in Norfolk; Nicole Yancey,
former French consul for the Commonwealth; representatives
of the French delegation from the Allied Command Transformation;
charter member Michelle Proffitt and other members
of the French Club of the Peninsula; and family and friends.
Charbonnier said, “We, the French, know that the liberation
of France and Europe began when the Allied armies
landed on the beaches of Normandy and advanced against
heavy enemy defense and climbed those deadly cliffs.
“You climbed them,” Charbonnier continued, speaking
to Mr. Glaser. “The American and Allied cemeteries in Normandy
will always remind us of those terrible days when
grief from the death and destruction went hand-in-hand
with our newfound liberty.
“John Glaser: ... This is our turn, the French authorities,
the government of France, to recognize what you have done
for the freedom of our country. I am very honored to officially
present you with the medal of the French Legion of Honor.”
Mr. Glaser’s induction recognizes him as an American
veteran who risked his life fighting for the liberation of
France, specifically in one of the main campaigns of the
war, qualifying him for the highest category — chevalier
(knight). The Legion of Honor, established by Napoleon
Bonaparte in May of 1802, is France’s highest honor.
As Mr. Glaser’s medal was pinned on his jacket, Charbonnier
intoned: “Au nom du President de la Republique
et en vertu des pouvoirs qui nous sont conferes, nous vous
faisons chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur.” (On behalf of
the President of the Republic and by virtue of the powers
conferred on us, we make you a knight of the Legion of
