located just south of the harley davidson museum along the milwaukee river, the
urban cemetery project manages to find refuge from the noise and distractions
of the busy city through creative terrain transformation and architectural form.
because of the delicate subject matter involved, the need for careful evaluation of
form and architectural psychology was a must. i decided to explore metaphysical
concepts of life and death and the symbolic contrast of materials, like black
marble and brushed stainless steel, with the very natural and undisturbed
landscape. i also attempted to further this contrast by having these contrasting
forms appear as they are floating in unnatural cuts in the landscape. this
simultaneous sense of connection and disconnect is representative of the world
of the living and that of the deceased; allowing visitors to feel a bond with
those they may have lost and serving as a catalyst for reflection and thought.
