Crossroads’16: The Biggest Fest Yet
by Bhavya Mittal
Shri Ram College of Commerce,
one of the prestigious colleges in
India, organized its
a n n u a l c u l t u r a l f e s t ,
Crossroads’16, on 5th, 6th, 7th
and 8th March and experienced
an unprecedented footfall of
around _____students coming
from different colleges.
The flamboyance of the grand
fest did not fail to grab the
eyeballs of any student.
Long queues outside the college
gates were evident of the
irresistible urge and
brimming elation of the students
to get inside and be a part of the
fest. On each
day, the college provided the
students with all the reasons to
not think of missing
the fiesta. With sponsors as big
as Manforce, Aqualite, Intex and
Roposo, the
4-day-celebration was a huge
success. From “Aam Aadmi ki
Stall” serving
mouth-watering delicacies to the
empty bellies to the stall offering
small diaries of
handmade paper and with
beautifully designed covers for
all those souls who wander
with thoughts always craving to
get inked down, there was
anything and everything
you could expect a fest to offer.
Sights of people posing for
photographs, hogging on
food, laughing their hearts out,
badgering their friends to take on
the rides were
unavoidable. The first day of the
fest saw the crowd swaying and
singing out loud
with Farhan Akhtar and with rain
pouring down during his
performance, it only added
to the levels of enjoyment.
Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Euphoria
Colleges as Make-out Spots
During Fests ?
actually check on these
people. Amongst the hustle
and bustle, these couples
manage to sneak up to the
segregated areas of the
college and have their little
honeymoon. I happened to be
present during the fest of this
one college where the
situation had gotten so bad
that the college authorities
had to college authorities had
to call in police to guard the
building so that no couple can
use the classrooms for their
romance.
But despite all this fuss, the
college serve as an excellent
opportunity for couples to
spend some quality time
together. There's food, good
music and of course lots of
dancing and fun. What else
do couples need right?
Now coming to the'singles
ready to mingle strata' of DU
fest attendees, fests provide
excellent opportunity to find
their partners and change
their relationship status.
While we are aware of the
stages that the girl and the
boy have to go through before
love blossoms yet the first
step of this process may as
well be provided by the space
of DU's rocking fests.
So what are you guys waiting
for, go grab the opportunity
before it gets to some other.
Cheers ! And good luck
THEATRE CELEBRATIONS: HINDU COLLEGE
Crack Of Dawn
by Divyani Jain
by Contributor
The Culture Council of Delhi
University organized a theatre
fest of one day titled “EK
DASHAK ABHIRANG KA”
at Hindu College on March 14,
2016.
Seven teams from Delhi
University participated in the
event. The respective colleges
that participated in the event
were:
Hindu College, Shaheed Bhagat
Singh College (M), Kirori Mal
College, Rajdhani College,
Mata Sundri College for
Women, Bharti College and
S h y a m L a l C o l l e g e ( M )
respectively.
T h e e v e n t h a d t h e
a f o r e m e n t i o n e d c o l l e g e s
performing their respective
stage plays in the event. By
performing such plays, the
respective colleges spread out a
message appealing to the masses
regarding different issues that
carried a social message with
them.
ShyamLal College (M) won the
first prize for performing their
a n n u a l p r o d u c t i o n t i t l e d
“AARZOO”, with Hindu
College finishing as runners up
for performing “SADRATI”
and Shaheed Bhagat Singh
College (M) coming in at
rd
3 position for performing D-41,
Heetal Road respectively.
A A R Z O O t h e a n n u a l
production of Shyam Lal
College (M) secured the first
position in the competition.
'AARZOO' is a portrayal of
humanity, which isn't bound by
gender or any other limitations.
Herein, a trans-gender brings in
the lost values and teaches us a
lesson for life. He nurtures a girl
child as his own and fights for
her until his last breath. It
confronts the society and their
reckless thoughts. It brings forth
affection and rights for every
i n d i v i d u a l .
The play is a symbol of
appreciation to the transgenders
or should we say once:
touched by God. Performing in
this event was a great learning
experience for the cast of the
play.
The brassy silence
pervading all around,
Devoid of the cheery
erstwhile sounds
Oh, where have the
euphoric chuckles lost,
The old days are gone
alas!
The solitary blankets of
solitude
Slyly surround the
fervent multitudes.
At the rear they dwindle
and depart,
those dazzling moments
of cherubic concord.
Solitarily, I do not
prance,
On these forlorn paths
of solemn endurance,
Escorting me on these
lonely paces
Is my grave, grim
loneliness
But on these barren
solitary roads
In the rear where the
quaint recollections
corrode,
There still glimmers a
hazy poise
That someday again
these deserted trails
may sparkle with
shimmering sprinkles of
delight.
And once again they
would surround
Those lost cheery
erstwhile sounds.
The abandoned elations
would pleasurably
reinstate,
But till then stands a
prolonged, desperate
wait.
The Decent Guys, Need an Applause for Their Being
The Way They are
by Divyani Malik
We are often found blaming
all the men of our society for
eve-teasing, rapes or sexual
harassment. But, we tend to
forget that amidst such men
who commit these heinous
crimes there are a few who
stand up and fight for
women. We need to learn
that, “Not all men are
same!” If you still don't
believe me, you need to give
this a thought: If all men are
sick then how come women
still exist in the society? I
don't entirely blame you for
such mindset. We as girls,
are forced to feel inferior of
guys. The cases that we hear
every day or the kind of life
we lead has distorted the
image of men for us.
Be it in a public transport,
work premises, schools or
even at homes we sense a
continuous danger. The way
f e w m e n o g g l e a t u s
everytime we step out or
some who have the courage
to feel us while traveling in
public transport force us to
think of all men being
disrespectable towards
women. I can identify with
what most of you feel but I
still want to take my time out
to urge you all to keep this
narrow point of view aside
and look at the bigger
picture.
Recently, I and my friend
went to party at Hauz Khas.
It was around 11pm when
we came out of the pub and
were looking for an auto
rickshaw. We were a bit
worried about our safety
before riding the auto so I
took out my phone, noted
down it's number and
informed a nearby friend.
Before boarding the auto I
asked for the driver's name.
He could see the terror on
our faces and comforted us
by giving his details and
even asked us to inform as
many people as we can. He
told us that he does his duty
honestly and that he has no
impious intentions. We were
relieved. It was a distance of
around 45 minutes and not
even for a single second did
we feel unsafe. Infact, he
made us feel easy and
relaxed. He told us about his
daughter back home and
how he looks up to every
woman with utter respect
and responsibility. This
incident definitely instilled
my faith in humanity. I can't
thank him enough to help
me see the good side of men.
I thus believe that there still
exist a few who don't fall for
the temptation to stare at a
woman or who take an alone
w o m a n a s t h e i r
responsibility rather than an
o p p o r t u n i t y .
There are men who are not
provoked by that short skirt
of yours and who value you
for your intelligence and
beauty inside. I have come
across many such guys who
don't respect women and
then I have met many more
who actually respect women
and are supportive of their
dreams and achievements.
We o f t e n r a n t a b o u t
feminism but have you ever
thought that it is about
equality and not about
targeting men or calling
them perverts? The concept
of feminism aims at making
a world better place to live
for both the sexes and is not
biased towards women.
So, in it's true essence we
must not forget to thank
those guys who taught us
that this society is safer for
us than we actually think it
is.
This letter is entirely
dedicated to all the decent
guys I have already met or I
a m y e t t o m e e t .
A big thank you for making
me feel safe and secure.
Read this Before Saying Bhe***od
next time!
by Garima Gupta
Having heard of this 'gaali' cum
adjective before the description of
every jerk on this earth, I wonder
why is this word so commonplace
and universal? The legacy of
uttering it out has been passed on
for generations now. The thing that
bugs me here is the objectification
of women as mere symbols of sex.
It is a highly derogatory remark
which tells us that the 'izzat' of a
person lies not in his character and
personality but somewhere else.
Sadly, it brings out the true picture
of our patriarchal society which
looks down upon females as if they
were children of some lesser God.
They are neither meant to be
owned as a property, nor do you
have a right to disgrace them.
Okay, I want an answer from you
all. Is saying bhe***od really
justified? Did you ever reflect
upon the seriousness of the blame
it poses on the other person? Or
are you worshippers of incest?
People who advocate freedom of
speech may screw me up here. On
a serious note, is the strongest
m u s c l e o f y o u r b o d y s o
uncontrollable that you keep on
rattling out the same abuse after
every two lines?
All I want is people to have a sense
of respect for your caretakers and
birth givers. There are some
people, who consider use of such
words to be something really cool,
but there is no sanity here, sit in
refrigerator for more coolness!
'Profanity is the effort of a feeble
brain to express itself forcibly.'
Women are not so timid that you
use them for insulting others. They
\
must be mentioned with dignity
and prestige.
So, a lame question before
wrapping up. Why do we even use
asterisks in these words? I know
the readers are smart enough and
well understand their meaning.
Will its use reduce the likelihood
of people being offended by it? Or
is it just to confuse and leave them
making wild guesses about it?
I won't deviate from my cause and
would strongly advise the whole
women folk not to simply overlook
the usage of such abuses. You
would definitely not like to be
honored by such words from your
boyfriend or spouse. It is you, who
will have to persuade your father,
brother everyone around you to
drop its use, as it is for you and by
you, and never let yourself be used
and abused.
Well the fest season ended
with the holiday mood swept
deserve the long awaited Holi
This time the stereotype was
broken and Ramjas college
which previously bore the
brunt of not hosting a
unique event prior to Mosaic
Hello Lovers!
This month at LoveDoctor we are
going to discuss relationships that
seems mismatched. Age and
cultural differences and other
things that can make or break a
relationship. Let's
do a deep dive in to
s o m e o f t h e
q u e s t i o n s t h i s
month ...
Question: Dear
LoveDoctor, I am
in love with a girl
w h o i s 8 y e a r s
younger than me.
W h a t s h o u l d I d o ? M y
marriage life will be happy or
not please tell me.
Thanks for your question.
Your married life doesn't depend
on the age difference - it depends
on your compatibility.
Are you both on the same page?
Do you like the same things and
agree on money, having kids and
other elements of compatibility.
There are many aspects of
compatibility, and we've listed
some of them below for you to
think about:
Conversation. Is it you or your
partner who does most of the
talking in your relationship?
There should be some level of
balance in how much each of you
speak.
Intimacy. Sexual intimacy is
i m p o r t a n t f o r a h e a l t h y
relationship — but not in the same
way for every couple. What's
important is that you both have
the same level of satisfaction with
your sex life, and you can talk
about it.
Ambition. You don't have to
share the same ambitions, but
there should be some level of
understanding. Are you both
career focused, or do you like to
take it easy?
Philosophy. You don't have to
share the same political or
religious affiliations, but you
should share what's truly
important in life.
Interests. Interests won't
m a k e o r b r e a k y o u r
relationship, but sharing
interests and hobbies is a
g r e a t i n d i c a t o r o f a
potentially long-lasting
relationship.
Science Behind Menstrual Taboos
by Rajni Aishwarya
Menstrual taboos today have
created a nuisance in every
woman's life. These menstrual
myths contribute a lot in
making a girl's life messier (as
if it already isn't!). Periods are
already enough of a painful
deal along with which a
woman has to cope up with
these taboos. This is a serious
issue in all the Religions,
practiced almost in every part
of the world. They may sound
senseless and baseless, but
e a c h t a b o o h a d h i d d e n
scientific reasons behind it
due to which they were hugely
practiced in the pre-modern
era. Let's see what they are
1) Do not wash your hair
while bleeding:
This taboo has a nomadic
origin, when people used to
take bath in rivers and ponds.
Bleeding women, if allowed
to take bath in the water bodies
could pollute the water which
would be unsuitable for
others.
2) Do not enter into the
kitchen while menstruating:
Previously women did not
h a v e s a n i t a r y p a d s o r
tampons. In this case they left
behind blood stains which was
unhygienic for food. Again,
not unfair right?
3) Do not go out (much)
while bleeding:
This also has a valid past. Our
ancestors went out hunting for
food, and resisted to take
menstruating women along
because the blood stains
which were left behind could
be easily sensed by wild
animals and hence were a
danger to the whole flock. Due
to this reason, bleeding
women were not allowed to go
out.
4) Do not visit temples
during your menstruation:
This is a very wrong notion to
believe that a bleeding woman
is impure or unclean. They
were not allowed to visit
temples because the satsangs
and the bhajans disturbed the
flow of energy in their body.
Also they suffer through pain
hence they were allowed to
stay back at home.
Source : Rubycup.
5) Do not touch the pickle, it
will rot:
This has the somewhat same
history as that of not entering
the kitchen. Also the process
of pickle making required
c o m m e n d a b l e e f f o r t s .
Working so much while
menstruating caused fatigues:
Now that we live in modern
era, these taboos are still
continued without knowing
the logic behind. We keep on
enforcing them in the cities
where they are no longer
needed! But one fact still
remains that many women are
unable to use sanitary pads in
the remote areas, hence these
objections are a compulsion
for certain scientific reasons.
instag
Sitting in the Community
complex, you notice the
unsupervised 12-year-old
riveted to his iPhone with his
wide-eyed friend looking on.
Walking through the mall you
see a group of young-adult
ladies seemingly oblivious to
surroundings as they stroll
together, each focused on
their cellphones.
On the very last benches of
the classrooms, one can easily
spot students clamoring and
chatting in vociferousness,
while continuously staring at
their phones.
Stopping at the intersection
you glance over and observe a
crowd of grown-ups basking
in the glow of their phones.
Mobile phones and youth are
everywhere. The question is:
"What are they looking at?”
There's no denying that the
phenomena at hand, Sexting,
is emerging as a new trend
amongst the youth. Sexting
refers to exchange of sexually
explicit photos, images, text
messages, or emails via
cellphone or other means of
communication. However,
today, sexting makes use of
different smartphone apps
including Snapchat, Kik,
Instagram, Vine, Viber,
W h a t s A p p , F a c e b o o k ,
Tinder, Blendr and Line.
Selfie nude images,
videos and sexually
graphic texts are all
examples of exchanges
taking place.
DOES IT
1 in 5 of the young-adult
generation does it, according
to Bill Alpert of the National
Campaign to Prevent Teen
and Unplanned Pregnancy.
"The primary reason young
people give is they say this is a
fun or flirtatious activity,"
Alpert says. "Girls also
reason that they do this as a
HIDDEN SEXTING APPS
Secret sexting apps have been
uncovered as an alarming
new trend for the youth, all
thanks to sex being a taboo in
India that mere mention of it
causes stomach ache to many.
These apps are often called
"vault apps" which allow
users to inconspicuously store
nude photos or videos on their
smartphones. Oftentimes the
a p p s a r e d i s g u i s e d b y
unsuspecting icons like a
calculator app that functions
like a calculator. Only the
person who downloaded it
knows how to unlock it with a
Sexting is the New Flirting
secret passcode.
SEXTING AS PART OF
GROWING UP
Sexting has become part of
growing up in modern day
America."It makes it harder to
say no because it's like, 'Oh
why not, just send a pic.' But it
shouldn't be that casual,"
Sophia told CBS News
correspondent Jericka
Duncan. According to
Dr. Kristin Perry, a
p s y c h o l o g i s t a n d
founder of parenting
resource Inparentis,
"sexting is the new
flirting”
A PROCESS- AN ART
A lot of sexting starts on apps
like Instagram and Twitter,
where direct messages are
sent to a girl who then
exchanges other info, like
Snapchat, Kik ID, phone
number and so on,” says a
Sexting addict. “Once sexting
starts it can get sexually
exciting and evolves into
sending explicit selfies to
each other as part of the chat.
It can even turn into mutual
masturbation,” openly admits
Ravi.
Indian women and men
openly admit they happily
engage and don't mind it.
Nevertheless, for those who
are comfortable with sexting,
they need to always practice
safety. This includes not
showing your face in photos,
using apps which do not store
photos, avoid sexting if you
are drunk or intoxicated,
definitely stay away from
stranger chats and delete
conversation history unless
you really want to keep them.
Therefore, as technology and
apps evolve, there is no
doubt sexting will increase
even more in popularity, and
future generations may well
use very different ways to
express this kind of sexual
interaction.
