Final Challenge: SUMOBOT
Teaching with Robots
SUMOBOT rules
Two robots compete in a head-to-head match following the
basic system of traditional human sumo matches. Robots
are allowed no weapons, and are not allowed to flip each
other. The sole purpose is a pushing match between the two
robots starting to force the other starting out of the arena.
area
area
1. The fight starts at the referee’s command and
continuous until a robot earns two Yuhkoh points.
2. The sumo ring shall be circular in shape, with a
diameter of 100 cm. The starting lines consist of two
painted parallel brown lines centered in the ring with
15 cm long and 10 cm spacing between them. The
border line is marked as a white circular ring 5 cm large.
The ring area extends to the outside edge of this
circular line.
100 cm
10 cm
3. Maximum size: a robot must fit within a square tube of 20 cm. A robot may expand in size after a
match begins, but must not physically separated into pieces. Parts that could break or damage the ring
or the opposite robot are not allowed. A maximum of 2 motors for movement and 1 motor for an
optional tool/weapon can be used.
4. The operations of the robots must begin automatically no less than five seconds after being started by
the user. Robots starting before the five second mark forfeit a Yuhkoh point.
5. Every match involves 2 games (fights), 1 minute for each and 1 minute of inter-fights pause.
6. One Yuhkoh point will be given when a robot legally forces the body of the opposing robot to touch
the space outside the ring, which includes the white side of the ring itself. Or if the opposing robot has
touched the space outside the ring on its own.
7. When a robot has fallen over on the ring or in similar conditions, Yuhkoh will not be counted but the
match continues and no one can back it up.
8. The team who receives four Yuhkoh points wins the match. If no robot has 4 Yuhkoh points at the end
of two games, the robot with the most points wins. If both robots have the same number of points
after two games, the referee has to toss a coin to decide the formal. Only for the final round
(selections of the first three places), the referee will be run another extra game before the final
random decision.
9. Upon the referee's instructions, the two teams approach the ring, and
place a robot within their starting area of the ring behind the starting
line. (A robot or a part of a robot may not be placed beyond the front
edge of the starting line toward the opponent. Note that it is not
required that a robot be placed directly behind the starting line; it may
be offset to the side, as long as it is behind an imaginary line collinear
with the starting line). When the referee announces the start of the
round, the teams start their robots, and after a five second pause the
robots may start operating. During these five seconds, players must clear
out of the ring area.
10. During the first two rounds, between every match all the teams have 10/15 minutes to improve their
software strategies.
