The Meeting
One
Scarlet Chan
Bird School
“So,which dimension are we going to today?” Scarlet asks, watching Ms. Dayne conjure up an
emerald portal, the spiraling vortex glowing next to the ramp.
“You’re going to follow Annabell and try to explore the Vortex World and find a new thing. It’s time
you birds discover something new for the benefit of the world. This is still the war against America, but
we need new discoveries to use to our advantage,” she replies.
“Where’d Jerry go?” Red-stone asks, looking through the clearing.
“Here! Behind you,” Jerry responds exasperatedly. “I’m cursed, remember? Stop trying to look for
me.”
“We are also exploring through the Vortex World to try and find a cure for Jerry, something
unknown to the Third Dimension. You never know what you can find!” Mr. Ramen Noodles says, “and
Jay-tee, I know your uniform is uncomfortable, and you are not used to it, but there are more important
matters right now.”
“Got it,” Jay-tee mumbles, stepping into the vortex for the hundredth time. Scarlet watches Stan,
Red-stone, and possibly Jerry disappear as well. Then she steps into the spiraling vortex, and walks
onto the clouds of the Vortex World.
Scarlet sees seven familiar portals: the one she just exited and the ones leading to the other six
dimensions. Annabell appears behind her, and calls everyone in for a plan.
“We’ll split up,” Annabell says, “Jerry I know you are messing with the clouds. Get over here.”
Scarlet still couldn’t get over the fact that Annabell could see the invisible and about to die in three
weeks Jerry. Apparently Jerry walks over, because Annabell starts talking.
“See that one place where there are no vortexes? They form a semicircle, but that place is
empty. Let’s go that way. Stick with the group, especially you, Jerry. I can see you now.”
Together they walk towards the opening of the semicircle. The clouds look infinite, but Annabell’s
confident face makes them move on. At least there were no evil clouds greeting them this time.
About a mile later, they reach the end.
“What the heck?” Stan asks, reaching for his phone, and starts recording. At least he isn’t playing
Minecraft. Scarlet can’t stand that game as much as Mr. Ramen Noodles.
“Look,” Penny says, pointing towards their left, “there’s a staircase. Made of quartz.”
“That is not natural,” Kantalope observes, smoothing the folds on her blue and white checkered skirt,
“should we go?”
“Says the person walking on a bazillion clouds,” Scarlet mutters, but follows Annabell towards the
stairs. The quartz is perfectly smooth, like a human built it. But who had been to Vortex World and
built these stairs, without informing Bird School?
The quartz stairs lead to an enormous quartz cave. It has a soft shade of magenta, like it is
glowing.
“It’s kind of dark in here,” Annabell reports, “Kantalope, light, please.”
Kantalope concentrates, and she becomes illuminated by a soft golden glow, contrasting the bit of
magenta from inside the cave.
“Whoa,” Jerry’s voice says as they reach the cave. Something invisible bumps into Scarlet, so she
knows that Jerry is right behind her.
“Kantalope was right,” Why says, “this is not natural at all. Why are there portals?”
“Guess we discovered the new dimension that Ms. Dayne wanted us to find!” Stan yells excitedly.
A weird girl emerges from a magenta portal, and her hair is super long and in a loose blond braid.
She almost looks like Scarlet, just not as amazing.
“Who are you?” she demands, surveying the group, “oh whatever. Well don’t go through this portal,
and you’ll be fine. My name is Alex if you need me.”
Scarlet notices that she pointed to the portal she came out of, and, rolling her eyes, glances at
Annabell. “So which one do we choose?”
“Out of the bazillion portals here, I say we—” Annabell starts.
“Whoa!” Red-stone interrupts her, falling into a portal. “There’s portals on the floor… well I’m falling
so meet you on the other side!”
“I guess we choose that one,” Jay-tee says while tossing back her hair. Then she dives in.
“There’s portals on the ground too?” Penny says, “whoa this place is not natural.”
“Let’s go,” Scarlet says, and jumps in as well, not waiting to see if the others would follow her.
Instead of being greeted by a black and white, or 2D world, she sees a normal world. A forest, but in a
clearing. Where the heck are they?
The others touch down behind her, except for Jerry. The cursed guy, of course, has to land on top
of Scarlet. Why her, of all people?
There’s footsteps, and Scarlet quickly surveys the surroundings. Is this the dimension that they
need? Scarlet hoped so. It looked exactly like the glimpses of trees that they saw from the Watch
Tower in District B, when touring the Wall. It looked more natural and less altered by humans. Is this
what Canada was like before Jerry’s father’s team destroyed everything, and built the districts?
“So, I die in three weeks, and now we are in a new dimension,” Jerry’s voice starts, but soon gets
cut off by Annabell.
“I say we listen to Ms. Dayne and Mr. Ramen Noodles. They told us to explore the dimension, and
set a point where we can teleport to. Scarlet, take the WayPointer. Just set it here, in the clearing,
just in case we go somewhere else next time we return.”
Scarlet obediently presses the WayPointer to the ground pressing the black button on the end of
the cylindrical object. It is a black cylinder with a handle on one end, with a button on the top. It’s
shaped like a gun, and works like one. If she wanted to, she could shoot a WayPoint on the top of a
tree.
It immediately asks her for a name, on the screen at the end of the cylinder itself. Scarlet looks
up immediately at Annabell, waiting for her input. Annabell shrugs in response.
Scarlet types in one word: CLEARING.Jay-tee gives her an affirmative glance, and clicks on her
communication device.
“Everyone turn on your comm devices,” Jay-tee says decisively, “if we accidentally split up, we need to
reach each other.”
“How come Scarlet gets the WayPointer again?” Stan complains, “she had it when we explored all
seven dimensions!”
“I trust her most,” Annabell replies, putting an end to the conversation.
The footsteps become louder, and a group of people enter the clearing. A few seconds later, they
are still staring at each other.
