• Key Economic Sector contributing<br />

– 26% of the GDP &<br />

– further 27% through links with manufacturing,<br />

distribution, <strong>and</strong> other services sub-sectors<br />

– 60% of export earnings<br />

– 80% of population living in rural areas <strong>and</strong> deriving<br />

livelihood mainly from agriculture<br />

– 80% of 56% Kenyas poor population are rural folk<br />

• Economic Recovery Strategy for Wealth <strong>and</strong><br />

Employment Creation (ERS) (2003-2007):<br />

– identifies agriculture as one of the prime movers of<br />

the recovery program<br />

– emphasis on sustainable agricultural growth as a<br />

critical element in poverty reduction<br />

Strategy for Revitalizing Agriculture (SRA)<br />

• Move from subsistence to commercially oriented,<br />

competitive, sustainable agriculture<br />

that is conducive to increasing agricultural productivity ie<br />

Increasing productivity to lower per unit costs of production by:<br />

– Improving extension service system<br />

– Improving research system<br />

– Empowering farmers<br />

– Improving the link between research, extension <strong>and</strong> the farmer<br />
