“ Those who trust in the Lord renew their strength, rising on their 

wings like eagles. They run and do not tire; they walk and do not faint.” 

–Isaiah 

During the past year, the following verse from Isaiah kept 

popping into my mind: “Those who trust in the Lord renew their 

strength, rising on their wings like eagles. They run and do not tire; 

they walk and do not faint.” This past year at Sinai Akiba was a 

thrilling realization of strength and renewal. 

The fantastic renovation of our third and fourth floors, made 

possible by the visionary actions and generosity of our leadership, 

parent population and friends, was tangible evidence of our 

school’s vitality. 

Before we began the project, I said that we needed an outstanding 

physical setting worthy of our students and of the 

excellence of our educational program. You confirmed that this 

vision was a worthy one, and you made it possible. 

Our job now is to continue to refine the excellence of the 

educational program itself as we continue to explore the uses of 

technology and the arts in our program, as we continue to enhance 

Israel education, especially for our middle schoolers, in preparation 

for their eighth grade Israel trip, and as we continue to find new 

ways to differentiate instruction on behalf of all of our students 

at all grade levels. 

What motivates us—educators, parents, friends and contributors 

alike—is the knowledge that our work is sacred work, 

trusting that in building a place of Torah we both renew each 

others’ strength and provide our children with the identity and 

values they will need in the future. 

Thank you for your support during this past year. In particular, 

I thank our past SAA Committee Chair, Lise Applebaum, for three 

years of intense, creative and determined leadership on behalf 

of our school and students.

A Message from Rabbi David Wolpe 

Some 2,000 years ago Rabbi Joshua Ben Gamla created the 

first Jewish school. In study is the continuity and promise of the 

Jewish people. As we learned the tradition, so we hand it down 

to our children, enriched by our own experience and wisdom. 

We at Sinai Temple and Sinai Akiba feel honored that you 

have entrusted the training of your children to us. As bearers 

of an ancient and sacred faith we know that if we can touch 

your children’s souls with Torah, with derech eretz, with anavah– 

humility–we will have fulfilled the promise of Rabbi Joshua. 

May God grant that we carry some of his merit to our children— 

to our future.

A Message from Howard Lesner 

The synagogue, for many of us, is a second home. It is home 

to our spiritual needs, our friendships, our Jewish commitments, 

and our support for the Jewish people around the world. We are 

fortunate that within the walls of our home is a school filled with 

the voices of children—our future. 

We continue to hear the accolades of synagogue members 

and the Board of Directors as they express great pride in the many 

accomplishments of our day school. We are also pleased to 

see so many Sinai Akiba families actively engaged in the life of 

the synagogue. 

This year our 5th through 8th graders patiently awaited the 

completion of the newly renovated third and fourth floors of our 

old school building while they attended classes at the American 

Jewish University and Sephardic Temple. When they returned, 

the expressions on their faces, and the joy and pride they had, 

made eight months of construction and waiting well worthwhile. 

The new Blumenthal Library, located in the Lainer Learning Center 

on the Arnall Third Floor, and Rickles Gymnasium are major accents 

to the modern designs of the classrooms and labs that our children 

enjoy throughout the school year. 

It is clear that we have successfully transformed the synagogue 

and school community into a welcoming home. Together, we 

continue to look to the future and focus on both the individual 

and collective needs of our extended family members.

This is one of the quotes on the walls of the Lainer Learning 

Center that our children walk by each day . It could not be more true 

for me personally as I near the end of my three year term as SAA 

Committee Chair. A term marked by the renovation of our 3rd and 

4th floors, the establishment of our 8th grade Israel trip, enhanced 

and diversified learning in our middle school and many other positive 

changes that impact our children each day. 

This year has been filled with excitement and change. In June 

of 2007, we began the renovation of the 3rd and 4th floors. In 

September, school started for our middle schoolers at the American 

Jewish University and for our 5th graders at the Sephardic Temple. 

In January, our students moved into the newly renovated spaces. 

Both teachers and students report that the facility has newly 

energized them. I would like to personally invite everyone to come 

upstairs for a tour to see our new facility at work. While the floors 

are finished, our fundraising for the project is not. There are still 

many dedication opportunities available and it is our hope that 

everyone in the Sinai Akiba Community will contribute generously. 

I also want to thank Trevor Abramson, architect, temple member 

and former SAA parent, for his tireless work on this project as my 

co-chair. I know these renovated facilities will continue to serve 

many generations of students for years to come. 

Another highlight of this year was the 8th grade Israel trip. 

Starting in June 2007, our 8th grade students participated in a 

revamped Israel program which is a culmination of their Judaic 

studies and will have a lasting impact. I am happy to report that 

most of our 2008 8th grade students participated in this program. 

Once again, the school had an incredibly successful development 

campaign led by Dalia Moghavem, Development Chair, and Janet 

Rosenblum, Development Director. In addition to the record amount 

of funds raised, our parent participation was extraordinarily high. 

The Development Committee continues to work on diversifying 

its sources of donations as the success of our school continues to 

be intricately linked to the success of our development campaign. 

Notably, many families made significant Centennial Campaign 

pledges and continued to increase their annual gifts to the school. 

Our admissions department, led by Barbara Goodhill, Admissions 

Director, and Lora Silverman, PR and Recruitment Chair, enjoyed 

a very successful year. In addition to a very strong recruitment 

season, SAA received two significant marketing awards in Boston 

by The Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education. The Douglas 

Family ECC continues to flourish under the guidance of Tracy Schatz, 

the ECC Director. We are confident this success will continue and 

the preschool will continue to be a significant feeder for both our 

school and temple community. 

As my term ends, I would like to thank the lay leaders who 

continue to provide the school with their leadership, insight 

and time: Julie Mayer, Education Chair, Lora Silverman, PR and 

Recruitment Chair, Dalia Moghavem, Development Chair, Sheila 

Kamran, PTA Chair, and Etty Arnall, Grandparents Association 

Chair. I would also like to thank Jeff Wolman for his continued 

leadership as Budget Chair and wish him much success as the new 

SAA Committee Chair. The amazing talent and passion of these 

individuals, as well as the skillled members of their committees, 

allow our school to thrive and grow. 

Lastly, I would like to thank the SAA administration and Sinai 

Temple’s administration for all their hard work and efforts. The 

dedication shown by our professional staff is truly inspiring. In 

particular, Norman Becker, the Vice-President of Education for 

Sinai Temple, and Kurt Smalberg, Sinai Temple President, provide 

unwaivering support to the school. And finally, our school would 

not be what it is today without the leadership and vision of Rabbi 

Scheindlin. It is has been my privilege and a true honor to work 

with him.

Development Committee 

Sinai Akiba’s 40th anniversary was the theme for many of this 

year’s Development Committee events and programs. A significant 

amount of time was also devoted to raising funds for the Centennial 

Campaign and the renovation of the 3rd and 4th floors. These 

efforts were generously embraced by our Sinai community, and as 

a result our development program continued to flourish. 

The Annual Giving Campaign was again exceptionally successful 

under the capable leadership of chairs Jamie and Joel Berman and 

Leigh and Rob Strauss. We enjoyed 92% parent participation and 

raised a total of $612,500. In addition, $159,068 was raised by the 

SAA Annual Event and Auction and the Raise the Paddle for Technology 

Campaign. The combination of these programs resulted in the 

single most successful fundraising year in the history of the school. 

Additional contributions and pledges to the Centennial Campaign 

and other fundraising efforts resulted in a fundraising total of 

$1,711,551 for 2007–2008 — an extraordinary figure to mark an 

exceptional year! 

The 2008 Annual Event was a beautiful evening celebrating 

40 years of SAA history. Our beloved Rabbi Scheindlin and all 

previous SAA board chairs were honored, and Annual Event Chairs 

Karen Samuels, Gaby Cosgrove and Janet Dardashty were able 

to incorporate the 40th birthday theme into every aspect of the 

evening. The Annual Event would not be complete without the hard 

work of our Auction Chairs Marcia Hacker, Ellie Khorsandi and Silvia 

Malamud. These auction veterans streamlined the process without

sacrificing the monetary success of the event, and we are forever 

grateful for their diligence and dedication to SAA. 

SAA has one of the most vibrant and active Grandparent 

Associations. Under the superb direction of chairs Etty and Claude 

Arnall, parent liaisons Sholeh Kashefi, Brenda Mehdyzadeh and 

Sandy Shohed, and a cadre of hard working grandparents, the 

association again demonstrated its support for SAA students by 

organizing various social activities as well as putting together a 

grand Grandparent’s Day. Our grandparents were also extremely 

instrumental in fundraising efforts for the 3rd and 4th floor 

renovation, and led the way with several major gifts for this project. 

The Headmaster’s Event was held at the lovely Bel-Air home 

of Brenda and David Mehdyzadeh. The Headmaster Chairs, 

Afsaneh Illoulian and Luiza Iancu, have always been great assets 

to the Development Committee, and we are thankful to them for 

organizing this exquisite event. 

The Alumni program is also thriving. As in past years, several 

reunions were held and fundraising from this group has seen steady 

growth. Thanks to Rona Cosgrove for serving as Alumni Chair. 

It has been my pleasure to serve as the chair of the Development 

Committee for the last three years. With the support of SAA 

Chair, Lise Applebaum, Headmaster Rabbi Laurence Scheindlin, 

Development Director, Janet Rosenblum and Katie Dox and Millie 

Wexler in the development office, our committee was able to reach 

its ambitious goals. My deep appreciation to all.

Budget Committee 

The goal of the SAA Budget Committee is to create a balanced 

budget that limits tuition increases to the greatest extent possible, 

while maintaining the excellence of our school. The committee 

strives to balance the rising costs of education with the need to 

offer a Jewish education at an affordable price. I would like to 

ex-press my appreciation to the SAA Budget Committee members, 

to the Sinai Temple Budget Committee, to SAA Business Manager, 

Jeanne Jacobs-Gaffney, and Headmaster Rabbi Laurence Scheindlin 

for their hard work in helping the school achieve its budgetary goals. 

The Budget Committee continues to use significant amounts 

of development funds in the school’s operating budget to offset 

the gap between tuition dollars and the cost of operating the 

school. Additionally, the Budget Committee seeks to reduce 

operating overhead through competitive bidding and efficient 

business practices. During the 2007–08 year, development funds, 

in combination with a 7.75% tuition increase, helped provide 

for increases in teacher salaries, new technology equipment, 

greater financial assistance to our community and maintenance 

of our facilities. 

During the past year, a significant portion of development 

funds raised through fundraising efforts went toward the school’s 

operating budget, and an additional 6% of tuition revenue went 

toward financial assistance. We expect that funding from sources 

other than tuition will be even more important to the school’s 

ongoing operations in the next few years. 

The committee continues its work on examining a five year 

plan. We look at the increase in tuition, annual fundraising and the 

endowment as ways to forecast future needs with the overarching 

goal of making a Jewish day school as affordable as possible.

students and programs benefit from the income of 

several endowments and special funds. We invite 

you to consider establishing an endowment fund or 

to acknowledge special occasions by contributing to 

any of the following funds. As of June 30, 2008, total 

endowment funds stood at $5,164,565.

Provides funds to enhance the quality of Jewish life in our community. 

Ezra Scholarship Fund 

Generates two annual awards, one for academic performance, and a second for 

scholarship and financial need. 

Joel Goldman Scholarship Fund 

Created in memory of Joel Goldman and designed to fund scholarships for 

children who could not otherwise attend Sinai Akiba Academy. 

Sally Gunter Curriculum Grant Fund 

Established in memory of Sally Gunter, the fund provides professional growth 

opportunities for Sinai Akiba Academy teachers. The fund offers annual grants to 

teachers for research or for significant curriculum development projects. 

Kianmahd Scholarship Fund 

Provides a source of funds for financial aid and scholarships to deserving Sinai 

Akiba Academy students. 

Liggett Family Teachers’ Endowment Fund 

Funds teacher benefits and training to ensure the high quality of the Sinai Akiba 

Academy teaching staff. 

Sinai Akiba Academy Endowment Fund 

Supports various aspects of the school program, including financial aid and 

program enhancements. 

Sinai Akiba Academy Technology Endowment Fund 

Supports and enhances Sinai Akiba Academy technology programs. 

Pam and George Smith Resource Center Endowment 

Funds the learning support program which helps students who have special 

learning needs. 

Bee and Sam Smotrich Scholarship Fund 

Benefits one or more students attending Sinai Akiba Academy as determined 

on the basis of financial need. 

Spiwak Scholarship Fund in Memory of Sara Baran 

Provides financial assistance for deserving students who would otherwise not 

be able to enjoy a Jewish day school education.

Supports and enhances the educational program of Sinai Akiba Academy. 

Ethel Weinberg-Jacob Weiss Fund for Jewish Education 

Provides financial assistance for deserving students who would otherwise not

Dora and Neil Kadisha Teacher Appreciation Award Fund 

Funds teacher appreciation awards which recognize SAA teachers for their loyalty 

and longevity to the school. Teachers receive an award after 7 years and 20 years 

of service. 

Shafai Award 

Established by Dr. and Mrs. Jamshid Shafai, this award is given each year to 

students who demonstrate a long-term commitment to personal development 

and fulfillment of their abilities. 

Bryna Vener Orchestra Fund 

Supports the ongoing activities of the Sinai Akiba Academy orchestra. 

Sinai Akiba Academy Financial Assistance Fund 

Funds tuition assistance for qualified students. 

Jewish Day School Match Program 

Sinai Akiba qualified for a matching grant in the amount of $25,000 made 

possible by generous gifts from Karen Samuels and Elliot Brown and 

Lisa and Gary Lainer. These gifts were matched through a joint program 

of the Jewish Funders Network, The Partnership for Excellence in 

Jewish Education and The Avi Chai Foundation. The funds were added to 

our Annual Giving Campaign.

It has become a tradition at Sinai Akiba to purchase a class gift, both 

as a way of saying thank you to the school and as a way of leaving a 

legacy that will physically remain even after our children leave. 

This year the renovation of the 3rd and 4th floors was a major 

undertaking and an accomplishment in which we can all take great 

pride. The Class of 2008 chose to support this project through 

the purchase of an illuminated inscribed block that is now proudly 

displayed outside the new Lainer Learning Center. 

When the alumni students return to Sinai for SiHi, High Holidays, 

or to use the library, they will always see the SAA ~ Class of
