Lightning strikes kill 50 in Bangladesh
More than 50 people across Bangladesh have died after
being struck by lightning in the past two days, police say.
Many of the dead were farmers who were killed as they worked in
their paddy fields. Bangladesh is prone to electrical storms but this
year they have been particularly severe.
Experts suggest a general rise in temperatures and deforestation may
be factors. Other victims included two students in the capital, Dhaka,

1

who were struck as they played football, and a teenage boy who died
when he went to collect mangoes. About 90 people have been killed
by lightning since March, compared to a total of 51 people in the
whole of 2015, Voice of America (VoA) reported.
The head of Bangladesh's disaster management body Mohammad
Riaz Ahmed told VoA he was "indeed concerned" by the rise in the
number of deaths. He said further thunderstorms were predicted for
later this month. Strong tropical storms regularly hit Bangladesh
ahead of and during the monsoon season, which runs from June to
September.
Pfizer Blocks the Use of Its Drugs in
Executions
California.Credit Eric Risberg/Associated Press
The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer announced on Friday that it had
imposed sweeping controls on the distribution of its products to
ensure that none are used in lethal injections, a step that closes off the
last remaining open-market source of drugs used in executions.

2

More than 20 American and European drug companies have already
adopted such restrictions, citing either moral or business reasons.
Nonetheless, the decision from one of the world’s leading
pharmaceutical manufacturers is seen as a milestone.
“With Pfizer’s announcement, all F.D.A.-approved manufacturers of
any potential execution drug have now blocked their sale for this
purpose,” said Maya Foa, who tracks drug companies for Reprieve, a
London-based human rights advocacy group. “Executing states must
now go underground if they want to get hold of medicines for use in
lethal injection.”
Raqqa, Syria, its self-declared capital.
"We have seen this declaration of emergency in Raqqa, whatever that
means," Col. Steve Warren, the spokesman for the U.S.-led anti-ISIS
coalition, told reporters Friday. "We know this enemy feels
threatened, as they should."
Moscow cemetery brawl: Two dead and 50
arrested
Two people have been killed in a mass brawl at a Moscow cemetery,
police say. Russian news reports said up to 200 people took part in
the brawl at the southwest Khovanskoye cemetery, the largest in the
city. A police spokeswoman said the victims died after being run over
by others trying to escape the scene in their cars.
The Russian interior ministry said more than 50 people were
arrested, Russia's Interfax news agency reported. The ministry also
confirmed that the fight involved firearms, although there were no
reports of shooting injuries.
Police spokeswoman Sofya Khotina said police believe the brawl was
caused by a territorial dispute between two different groups of
cemetery workers. She said both of those killed were involved in the
brawl, correcting earlier reports that one had been a police officer.
Russia media reports said the ethnic groups from ex-Soviet Central
Asia and the Caucasus were fighting over the cemetery's lucrative
services business.
Headless body found in Brazoria County
BRAZORIA COUNTY, TEXAS - Authorities say a headless body was
found in a pickup parked at the Austin Bayou Boat Ramp on FM 2004
in Brazoria County. The discovery was made the evening of May 3.
The victim has since been identified as Jubal Dee Alexander from
Port Arthur. The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office says a caller
reported what appeared to be a deceased person in a blue Chevrolet
pickup truck parked at the ramp.
Investigators said a fisherman came back from a day on the water and
noticed the truck hasn’t moved since early that same morning.
Deputies responded and found the headless body.
Investigators confirmed the man's identity, but after an extensive
search his head was never located. Positive identification was made
through fingerprint analysis.
Sheldon Adelson Is Poised to Give Donald
Trump a Donation Boost
The casino magnate Sheldon G. Adelson told Donald J. Trump in a
private meeting last week that he was willing to contribute more to
help elect him than he has to any previous campaign, a sum that
could exceed $100 million, according to two Republicans with direct
knowledge of Mr. Adelson’s commitment.
As significant, Mr. Adelson, a billionaire based in Las Vegas, has
decided that he will significantly scale back his giving to
congressional Republicans and direct most of his contributions to
groups dedicated to Mr. Trump’s campaign. The two Republicans
familiar with Mr. Adelson’s plans spoke anonymously because they
were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Mr. Adelson’s pledge to Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican
presidential nominee, comes at an opportune time. Mr. Trump has
relied on a mix of his own wealth and small-dollar contributions to
finance his primary effort and lacks the sort of major donor network
needed to sustain him in the general election.
Facebook scrambles to contain fallout
Facebook is scrambling to contain the fallout from allegations that it
has suppressed right-leaning political content on its powerful
platform — a charge that hits at the social network’s image of
neutrality.

5

CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg promised Thursday to meet
with top conservatives about the allegations, a sign of how damaging
any perception of political bias could be to the company.
“To serve our diverse community, we are committed to building a
platform for all ideas,” Zuckerberg said in post addressing the issue
directly for the first time.
“In the coming weeks, I'll also be inviting leading conservatives and
people from across the political spectrum to talk with me about this
and share their points of view.”
Facebook’s problems intensified when unnamed former workers for
its "trending" topics section told tech news website Gizmodo this
week that colleagues had routinely omitted topics and news sources
popular with conservatives.
Microsoft pulls the plug on Project Spark
Out of the blue, Microsoft has announced that Project Spark is closing
down. The Xbox One experiment which made it possible for just
about anyone to create and publish games is to be killed off "after
much consideration".
The service will be completely offline by 12 August meaning that after
this date it will no longer be possible to upload or download content.
Microsoft stopped development of Project Spark last year, but users
had hoped that it would just be left to its own devices; this sunset
announcement means that this is no longer the case.
Microsoft advises users to download any content they still want to be
able to access after the shutdown date. The company has also thanked
users and developers who have supported Project Spark "by
uploading hundreds of thousands of creations and dreaming up
millions of objects, behaviors, and experiences".
George Clooney Says He's 'Lucky' He Didn't
Find Fame Until 33
Money Monster director Jodie Foster is impressed that she, Julia
Roberts and George Clooney, who also star in her latest thriller, are
"pretty well adjusted" after being in the industry for so long.
"We all have good lives, and we’re nice to people, and so far none of
us is barking like a seal on Hollywood Boulevard," says Foster during
a sit-down with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial
Director Jess Cagle in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. "We’ve
all had to find some adaptive tool to survive what is a kind of
destructive psychological path: figuring out what does belong to the
public and what doesn’t."
For Clooney, 55, staying down to Earth has been easy because he
didn’t catapult to stardom until 1994 when he joined NBC's E.R.
"I was lucky because real fame happened when I was 33," says
Clooney. "I lived a normal life for a lot longer than I haven’t been
living one."
Trinidad trade union leader questioned over
rape allegation
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The President of the Public Services
Association (PSA) Watson Duke was detained by police overnight for
questioning over a rape allegation, but he has denied any wrongdoing
and vowed to vigorously defend his reputation.
Duke turned up at the Central Police Station in Port of Spain
accompanied by an attorney yesterday afternoon, after learning that
lawmen were looking for him. They had gone to his office earlier in
the day, but he was not there at the time.
The complainant in the matter, a 33-year-old who works at the PSA,
reported to police that she went to the Hyatt Regency last Tuesday for
what she thought was a business meeting, but Duke raped her in a
hotel room.
Barbados Opposition’s no-confidence motion
fails
RIDGETOWN, Barbados – With the support of a former Opposition
Barbados Labor Party (BLP) parliamentarian, the government early
this morning successfully defended a no-confidence motion – the
third to be brought since the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) won the
2008 elections. The motion, led by Opposition Leader Mia Mottley
failed just after 2 a.m. when 12 BLP MPs voted in favor, and 15
members of the government benches voted no, along with
Independent MP for Christ Church West Dr. Maria Agard, who was
expelled from the BLP last year. During her presentation on Tuesday,
Mottley had argued that the government was mishandling the
economy, and outlined its failures in various sectors.
Date set for referendum on same-sex unions
in Bermuda
HAMILTON, Bermuda – In less than two months, registered voters in
Bermuda will have their say on same-sex unions. June 23 has been

set as the date for a referendum on that issue, according to a Notice of
Referendum issued by Premier Michael Dunkley yesterday.
The Nassau Guardian quoted Dunkley as saying that the results of the
referendum would be “non-binding”. According to him, the upcoming
vote is “an opportunity for Government and for the people of
Bermuda to expression their opinions on a very important subject”.
There will be two questions on the ballot papers: Are you in favor of
same-sex marriage in Bermuda? Are you in favor of same-sex civil
union in Bermuda?
Police say Peter Solomon’s body was discovered in a bushy area off
Mausica Road in D’Abadie yesterday, wrapped in plastic. An autopsy
is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death, but initial
reports indicate there were signs of violence on the partially
decomposed body. The 26-year-old Solomon had sneaked past police
officers at the Central Police Station in the capital Port-of-Spain on
November 9, 2015, shortly before he was to be taken to court to
answer charges of being a gang member and possession of a
bulletproof vest.
Boko Haram threat warning ahead of summit
Nigeria's militant group Boko Haram remains a threat,
French President Francois Hollande has warned ahead of a
summit in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.
This was the case despite "impressive" gains against the group, Mr.
Hollande said after meeting his Nigerian host Muhammadu Buhari.
Leaders of countries making up a force against the Islamist group are
among those attending Saturday's summit.
The group's seven-year insurgency has killed some 20,000 people.
More than two million have been displaced from their homes.
Egypt jails 51 for protesting against Saudi
islands deal
Egypt has sentenced 51 people to two years each in prison for
protesting against a decision last month to cede two Red Sea islands
to Saudi Arabia. There were 33 defendants present in the Cairo
courtroom to hear the verdicts, while the rest were out on bail.
Family and friends of the defendants cried in shock outside the
courthouse, reports said.
The decision to hand over the islands to Saudi Arabia sparked a
backlash among many Egyptians.
It was made by Egyptian president Abdul Fattah al-Sisi during a rare
visit by Saudi Arabia's King Salman, during which the Saudi king
announced plans for aid and investment in Egypt. Critics says
President Sisi "sold" the uninhabited islands, Tiran and Sanafir, in
return for the investments.
NBA playoff scores 2016: Goran Dragic saved
the Heat from elimination
Chris Bosh's absence is the best thing that could have happened to
Goran Dragic. Nobody wants to see Bosh sidelined, sadly missing
over a third of the season with complications from his dangerous
blood clot conditions. But it wasn't until he went out that Dragic
finally reached his full potential in Miami. Dragic dramatically
improved his numbers after the All-Star break, and his dominant
performance in Game 6 on Friday summarized perfectly what his

14

playoff run has been like over the past few weeks.
To keep their season alive, Dragic dropped 30 points on 12-of-21
shooting on Friday, nabbing seven rebounds and dishing four
assists. It wasn't a singular burst, but a steady drip of needed points
and quality baskets.
FIFA Statement on resignation of Domenico
Scala
FIFA accepts Domenico Scala’s resignation as Chairman of the Audit
& Compliance Committee with immediate effect. FIFA regrets that
Mr. Scala has misinterpreted the purpose of the decision taken by the
FIFA Congress.
The decision was made to permit the Council to appoint members on
an interim basis to the vacant positions of the new committees so they
can start fulfilling their roles as part of the ongoing reform process
until the next FIFA Congress in 2017. In addition, the measure allows
for the swift removal of members who have breached their
obligations.
The Council fully respects the independence of the Audit and
Compliance and the Ethics committees, and any suggestions to the
contrary are without merit.
Mr. Scala has made unfounded claims that are baseless. FIFA is
focused on reform and the path forward as evidenced by the

appointment of a new FIFA Secretary General.
Pending the appointment of a new Chairman of the Audit &
Compliance Committee, current Deputy Chairman Sindi Mabaso
Koyana will serve as acting Chairman.
Lewis Hamilton takes pole in Spanish GP
qualifying
Lewis Hamilton secured a sensational pole position at the
Spanish Grand Prix, beating Mercedes team-mate Nico
Rosberg into second place.
Max Verstappen was fourth 0.407 seconds behind teammate Daniel
Ricciardo after looking set to beat him. It was nevertheless a highly
impressive debut for the 18-year-old after his transfer to the Red Bull
senior team.
Ferrari disappointed - Kimi Raikkonen fifth over a second slower
than the Mercedes. The Finn's teammate Sebastian Vettel was sixth,
0.2secs off his teammate. It was Hamilton who stole the headlines,
finding stunning pace in qualifying when he had appeared to be
struggling all weekend. He had been unable to match Rosberg in the
tricky final sector of slow corners throughout the practice sessions
and in the first part of qualifying. But suddenly in the second part of
qualifying he found a massive amount of time, lapping 0.6secs
quicker than Rosberg.
Serena Williams thrashes Svetlana Kuznetsova in
Rome
World number one Serena Williams waltzed through to the
Italian Open semi-finals by defeating ninth seed Svetlana
Kuznetsova in straight sets. The top seed, who ate dog food
before her win over fellow American Christina McHale in the last
round, beat Russian Kuznetsova 6-2 6-0 in 51 minutes.
Williams will now play Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu after she beat
Japan's Misaki Doi 6-2-7-6.
In the other semi America's Madison Keys faces Spain's Garbine
Muguruza. Keys, 21, despatched Barbora Strycova of the Czech
Republic 6-4 4-6 6-3, while 2015 Wimbledon finalist Muguruza beat
Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky 7-5 6-2. Williams, who admitted
being sick after eating dog food ordered off a menu for her Yorkshire
Terrier, is aiming for a fourth Italian Open title.
