The Kea <strong>Conservation</strong> Trust (KCT) was set up <strong>in</strong> 2006 to assist <strong>in</strong><br />
conservation of wild kea (Nestor notabilis) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir natural habitat<br />
<strong>and</strong> to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> husb<strong>and</strong>ry st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> advocacy potential<br />
of those kea held <strong>in</strong> captive facilities with<strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong>.<br />
Aims<br />
The Kea <strong>Conservation</strong> Trust aims to assist <strong>in</strong> conservation of wild kea <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir natural habitat through:<br />
• Establish<strong>in</strong>g positive work<strong>in</strong>g relationships with associated conservation<br />
groups/<strong>in</strong>dividuals;<br />
• Rais<strong>in</strong>g of funds to allow research on kea issues;<br />
• Provision of an easily accessible <strong>in</strong>formation resource on kea.<br />
The Kea <strong>Conservation</strong> Trust also aims to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> husb<strong>and</strong>ry<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> advocacy potential of those kea held <strong>in</strong> captive facilities<br />
with<strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong> through;<br />
• Provision of <strong>in</strong>formation on best practice management;<br />
• Rais<strong>in</strong>g funds to conduct research <strong>in</strong>to:<br />
<strong>Advocacy</strong> strategies<br />
Optimum enclosure design<br />
How best to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> physical/psychological health of captive kea;<br />
• Provision of a support network for all kea holders.<br />
Vision<br />
To ensure an enriched <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able future for both wild <strong>and</strong> captive<br />
kea populations.<br />
Mission<br />
To develop <strong>and</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ate a coord<strong>in</strong>ated support system through local<br />
<strong>and</strong> national affiliations for conservation of kea <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir best<br />
practice management <strong>in</strong> captivity.<br />
Work<strong>in</strong>g Toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
Protection of endangered wildlife <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sensitive environments can<br />
only be achieved through collaboration <strong>–</strong> communities work<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
on local, regional, national <strong>and</strong> global scales to save charismatic <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>teractive species such as kea.<br />
