A Message from the National Kea Leaders
Hi Everyone
What a fantastic set of programmes we have for you this Term! We have gone back and used the very first programmes developed and added a few extra pieces here
and there and we know that you can only have fun in Term One! Just a warning, ensure that each Kea (and Leader) has a change of clothes each week and that you
have loads of towels at hand. We have tried to ensure there is lots to do for everyone in every area. If you don’t have a beach nearby, you will most likely have a
river, lake or pool, so go and have a Beach, Pool, Lake or River Party in Week 3. Make sure you find out about Mudslide action near you and join in with the Kea
Sleepover – this gives you the opportunity to meet with other Leaders, network and get and give ideas and support.
For the last week of term, meet with the rest of your Group and have loads of fun either at the Den (Hall) or somewhere else, and don’t forget to invite families
along, it’s a great way to recruit new Leaders and Committee members. Make sure all members of the family join in the activities and are not just left sitting on the
side. Use this time also to give out badges and awards. It lets members of your Group see how well your Keas are achieving.
You will also notice that we now have a Kea Water Safety Badge, so you may want to encourage Keas to achieve this badge – there is plenty of opportunity to do
so this term. We just know you and your Keas are going to have FUN FUN FUN this Term. Enjoy!!! And please send some photos to us (by e-mail is fine) of your
Keas in action.
Please feel free to contact your Zone Kea Leader if you have any queries or to invite them to your Kea activities.
Please go to www.scouts.org.nz for your Resource Pages.
This programme has been developed for the Kea Section with the School Year and ages in mind as listed below.
Section
Time Spent School Year Approx Age Start / Transition End Age
Keas 2 years Year 1 5.5 years Start term 4
Keas Award Scheme:
Year 2
Year 3 7.5 years Transition term 3 8 years
We have included references to the Award scheme in the programme; please record all the Keas who participated in these activities so that they can work towards
achieving the Bronze, Silver and Gold Kea Badge before being promoted to Cubs. A simple way would be to record on your programme sheet who attended the
session and later on transfer the information to the Kea Record Card (included in the resource file) and also the Wall Chart so Keas can see their progress. Order
the badges from Scouting Direct and present them at a special awards ceremony.
If you need help understanding any of the instructions or need further information please contact your Zone Kea Leader or contact: Anne-mieke Korenhof, Assistant
National Kea Leader on 07 348 1165 or email akorenhof@xtra.co.nz or Heather Guptill National Kea Leader guptillfamily@xtra.co.nz .
We value your comments and feedback so we can continually improve the quality of the programmes, so please let us know how you got on, what you liked and what
didn’t work for you and any suggestions or ideas that you may have. Better still put your hand up to help plan a week or two of the next programmes.
Acknowledgements: Thank you for the help in reviewing and adding to this Term’s programme goes to Coralie Stanley (Palmerston North), Anne-mieke Korenhof
(Rotorua) and Heather Guptill (Waihi Beach).
Theme Way to Go H2O Week Week 3:Party, Party, Party
Why: Welcome back to the New Year - 2012
Baden Powell, our founder, if still alive would have been 150 years old on the 22 nd February
(Hence we celebrate Founders day every year on the 22 nd Feb.)
Many clubs have new Keas at the beginning of the year and it’s a chance to meet their families and share in the FUN of Keas.
Where: The choice is yours
Go to the beach, lake or river
Go to your local pool, school pool or a pool at someone’s house; make sure it is shallow – not over 1m
deep
Or stay at your hall and celebrate outside –ask everyone to bring a change of clothes.
You may like to hold it a little later than normal to ensure all the family can be part of the action.
What to do: This is a family event so organize people to bring a BBQ tea, a picnic, a potluck meal – your choice.
Make sure an activity intention form has been completed at an earlier date. Parent consent forms are
required.
As this is a family event strongly encourage all parents to be involved.
Ensure you have checked your venue out beforehand, identified risks and ways to minimize these.
Make sure you have sufficient parent helpers and each parent is assigned a small group of children to watch.
Plan some activities. (See attached lists for ideas)
Organize the gear needed for your activities.
Programme for the night: Start with a welcome to all and the Kea Song and Yell.
Invite parents/siblings to be involved and participate in activities.
Include demonstrate signal for help, how to out on a personal flotation device correctly. Describe 3
important
water safety rules.
Set boundaries, advise rules for safety and provide any housekeeping information.
Make crafts, play games, sing songs, tell stories depending on your venue, you could even have a
water slide or water fights.
Finish with a Kea closing and then everyone stay to share a meal together.
Programme Element for this week: Personal Development / Life Skills
PLEASE NOTE:
The weekend of 25/26 th February is SCOUTs New Zealand’s “National Mudslide Day”. Local events will be organised so your
Kea Club may be involved with this.
use the 2 pieces of cardboard to cross from one
side of the hall other using the cardboard as
stepping stones (The hall is a pond infested with
crocodiles), When they get to the other side they
are immune to crocodiles and run back with the
cardboard and hand them to the next Kea who
has a turn.
Week 6 : THE KEA SLEEPOVER
Theme: H2O to Go
These are suggestions only for the Kea Sleepover. It is important that Zones join together for this yearly sleepover, so that the Keas
and Leaders will get to know each other and it will make it easier for them to settle when they get the Cub Camps, Summer Camps,
Jamboree and other Scout Camps. It also gives Leaders a chance to do some networking and on the job training – the more
experienced Leaders can help the less experienced ones. You Zone Kea Leader should have information regarding the Sleepover in your
Zone or Region or if not contact your Regional office and join another Zone’s Sleepover. Choose a venue that can be used in all
weathers and do not cancel unless there is a weather warning out for your area.
Tips for a successful Sleepover:
Make sure all Adults are involved in some way – it could be running a base or preparing food or as a Dormitory Leader.
Make sure all Adults and Keas are aware of the Sleepover Rules.
Ensure you have a plan and that Adults are aware of their role either on arrival at the Sleepover or before.
Ensure each Kea and Adult who attends the whole Sleepover and stays the night receives a Kea Sleepover Badge.
This is a Kea Sleepover and should be run for the Keas not any other age group.
Invite the Rover and Venturers in your Region to help with the organisation and running of this event.
Ensure that everything is cleaned up prior to anyone leaving so it is not left to just a few to clean and tidy up.
