Inspired musical performances happen every day of the year in Austin,
Texas. We pride ourselves on being the live music capital of the world
and we are fortunate to have over 8,000 working musicians who
contribute to our music scene. Health Alliance for Austin Musicians
(HAAM) has helped over 2,700 musicians and through our work we
have seen the dedication, persistence and generosity of our musicians.
They inspire us to do more, do it better and perform at a level worthy

Letter from the Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends,
As I reflect on 2011 and the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, I am once again awed by the generosity of our
supporters, the dedication of our staff and volunteers, and the commitment from our affiliate service providers. HAAM’s
reach and impact grew deeper this year as the organization served more musicians than ever and as we expanded
through new partnerships with Whole Foods Market and the Academy of Oriental Medicine Austin to offer new nutrition
and wellness services to musicians. Thanks to you, HAAM is providing vital care to musicians so that they can grow and
flourish in their careers, contribute economic and cultural vitality to the community and help keep Austin the Live Music
Capital of the World.
HAAM’s work would not be possible without the support of our community. Because of your generosity, HAAM has helped
over 2,700 musicians access over 41,000 healthcare appointments valued at over $10 million dollars since we began just six
years ago. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the outstanding affiliate service providers with whom we work. We thank The
SIMS Foundation, St. David’s Foundation in partnership with Capital Area Dental Foundation, Seton Healthcare Family, Estes
Audiology and Prevent Blindness Texas for providing vital healthcare services for HAAM musicians.
I want to recognize and thank some special people who helped make 2011 so successful for HAAM. Huge thanks to Keith
Carmichael for his leadership of HAAM Benefit Day. Keith and his outstanding committee again broke records by raising
$235,000 to support HAAM’s work. Mark your calendars for the 2012 HAAM Benefit Day on Tuesday, October 2. Thank you
to Melanie Plummer and Rose Reyes who co-chaired Corporate Battle of the Bands and who have agreed to return to lead
us for the 2012 competition scheduled for Thursday, April 19 at Antone’s. You really raised the bar! Rikki Hardy has taken
over the reigns of Good Eggs & HAAM and has created a strong community of music lovers supportive of HAAM’s work.
I also want to especially recognize and thank Jill McGuckin for her support and work on behalf of HAAM. Working behind
the scenes for years and providing invaluable advice, support, and friendship, Jill is a big reason why the Austin community
knows about HAAM and why our mission is so important.
In 2011 we said goodbye to board members Lidia Agraz, Karen Bartoletti, Madge Vasquez and Howard Yancy. Their
contributions have been many, and we have them to thank for much of our progress. In 2011, we welcomed new board
members Olga Campos, Keith Carmichael and Scott Gillmore and have already experienced the gifts that they bring to
HAAM. We have outstanding leadership on the entire board, and HAAM’s continued success in 2011 was due in large part to
our great leadership.
In late 2011, HAAM made the difficult decision to temporarily close enrollment to new musicians as we planned strategically
for the next level of growth based on the increased demand for services. HAAM has grown rapidly, with a significant spike last
year, and up to now we have been fortunate to have the resources to continually take on new musicians. We are committed
to smart and sustainable growth and the HAAM board, together with the staff and devoted volunteers, have developed an
aggressive plan to meet the financial goals necessary to re-open to new enrollment as quickly as possible, most likely in the
second quarter of 2012. As we look ahead to 2012 we are inspired and guided by the vision of our founder Robin Shivers.
We have established a goal for HAAM which I hope we achieve soon: that Austin, Texas will have the healthiest musicians
in the world.
We are also inspired by the testimonials from the musicians we serve. One HAAM member-musician says, “HAAM provides
an astonishingly vital service for the musicians who have gravitated to Austin in pursuit of a scene which encourages and
appreciates creativity on a scale that few other cities can boast. HAAM’s services (in cooperation with the service providers
who partner in their efforts) are literally saving my life and I am challenged to express my gratitude adequately - but it’s
actually the businesses and other supporters who recognize the unique situation we have here and make it possible (and
keep it healthy!) who have the vision to recognize the value of the ‘Live Music Capital’ who shape the future impact of what
Austin’s musicians will hopefully continue to offer the world.”

2,758 clinic visits to 1,131 patients

968 hospital services, including outpatient, inpatient
and emergency room procedures
195 referrals to specialists
St. David’s Foundation in partnership with

1,072 dental visits to 607 patients
The SIMS Foundation provided:
5,431 sessions of counseling, psychiatric and addictionrecovery
services to HAAM members.

who then received custom earplugs

Whole Foods Market was presenting sponsor for the sixth
annual HAAM Benefit Day on Tuesday, October 4. HAAM
Benefit Day is a city-wide celebration of live music and the
talented musicians who make Austin and its culture so rich.
It was a record-breaking day all around, with the largest
number of Austin area businesses making a donation or
pledging a portion of the day’s proceeds — more than 215 —
and the most musical performances (more than 170) heard
on any HAAM Benefit Day. The result was the most funds
raised to date for HAAM Benefit Day: $235,000.
HAAM is incredibly grateful to the community for your
support. Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association and C3
Presents matched community donations up to $30,000.
You helped us reach this goal. HAAM is also especially
appreciative of Whole Foods Market, which has made an
incredible commitment to musicians’ health throughout
the six years of this event. Whole Foods Market has taken
their commitment to the next level by offering nutrition
workshops to HAAM member-musicians. Underwriters The
Brown Cup, Brown Distributing, GSD&M, Palisades West,

Ray Benson’s Birthday Bash
Ray Benson celebrated his birthday in style this year with
an all-star bash in March, and he chose Health Alliance for
Austin Musicians as the beneficiary of the festivities. It was
an amazing evening of great music, food and fun! Thank you,
Ray, for sharing your big day with HAAM. We are looking

Corporate Battle of the Bands
“Cirrus Logic proudly supports HAAM and Corporate Battle
of the Bands because we love live music and appreciate
the gifts that local musicians give us. Helping musicians
get access to health care through HAAM is one way we can
give back to these artists. And frankly, Corporate Battle
of the Bands is a lot of fun for our employees. In 2011, the
Cirrus Logic Guitar Orchestra, which is our third and newest
band, took the stage and won Fan Favorite. We’re excited to
support the Corporate Battle of the Bands again at Antone’s

Cirrus Logic and H-E-B presented the fourth annual
Corporate Battle of the Bands fundraiser and concert on
Thursday, April 28. Bands made up of business professionals
who play music as a hobby competed against each other in
front of celebrity judges and a packed house at Antone’s to
raise awareness and funds for HAAM.
Congratulations to all of the year’s participants — you
were great! A special thank you to event co-chairs Melanie
Plummer and Rose Reyes for your leadership of the event
and to committee members Amanda Garcia, Roxanne
Rouse, Tracy Schell, Darlene Starr and Amy Welborn.
HAAM invites business professionals who love to play live
music to join in the 2012 Corporate Battle of the Bands on
Thursday, April 19.
Holiday HAAM Jam Volume 1
HAAM received an amazing holiday gift this year! The
Holiday HAAM Jam album developed from a whimsical
thought by Dr. Shane Matt of Authentic Smiles Dental Studio.
Rod Williams and Dr. Matt decided to have a holiday party,
record it, and sell CDs to raise money for HAAM. Dr. Matt
approached Mark Addison, of the Aerie Recording Studio,
to engineer the recording but Addison convinced him to do
it right and volunteered his studio and services to make an
album. It became a dream come true after recruiting singersongwriter
Wendy Colonna to organize the project. In less
than two weeks the idea went from conception to recording
nine songs in ten hours on a Sunday afternoon. No small
feat with nearly thirty musicians to play! At the same time
Daddies Juju and David Garza recorded their songs at
studios in New Orleans and El Paso. The remaining five
songs had been previously recorded and were added before
mastering by Mark Hallman at The Congress House Studio.
In less than a month nearly forty musicians and industry
professionals came together to create an album to support
healthcare for Austin musicians.

Good Eggs & HAAM
Good Eggs & HAAM is a community of Austin music lovers
that are passionate about live music, understand that
musicians are a unique and important cultural and economic
resource for Austin, and have a desire to give back and
support musicians’ health care. Good Eggs educate the
community about HAAM and its mission and support the
organization through an annual monetary contribution.
Additionally, Good Eggs participate in social networking
events and fundraising events throughout the year that
allow opportunities to advocate for musicians’ health.

‘dental van’ where I’ve had
my teeth cleaned. The folks
in the van are great! One time
they hooked me up with a
little paper work and I saved
$800 on a crown. Are you
kidding me? For a working
musician like myself, a smile
is everything! I attended a
workshop created by HAAM
and learned exercises that
prevent injury as a result
of repetitive motion. Now I
play better. HAAM arranged
it and I took a tour at Whole
Foods where I learned how to
eat healthfully on a budget.
