On a night like this...
A breeze of excitement swept through the
air as the eager year 11 and 12s strode into
School on the Thursday morning. Class went
by quickly with mutters of preparations and
“whose wearing what” conversations. The
students were dismissed at 2:05 precisely
and in a disciplined manner exited the
School premises in order to prepare for the
upcoming occasion.
Students arrived at the Lincoln garbed
in elegant clothes, arriving in limousines,
stretch hummers and the fateful few in taxis.
Mutters of admiration were emitted from
the teachers as the students paced into the
lobby. There was no shortage of smiles as
pictures were taken and the photo- booth
snapped the frequent photo. From there
the attendants entered the hall and gasps
of disbelief shattered the silence. The tables
were beautifully decorated, providing
evidence of the fundraising efforts made by
the year 11 and 12s.
The formal commenced with introductions
from the eccentric M.Cs followed by the
first course of delicious soup, catered by
Kosher Classique. As the appetising food
was settling in the excited stomachs, the
attendants were invited to the dance floor
to show off their practiced moves and
release their inner ‘Anna Pavlova’. The
dancing was trailed by entertaining awards
Singing my Country
Last week, a few King David School students had the wonderful opportunity to
participate in folk singer Ted Egan’s “Connection - Singing My Country” project.
The idea behind the project is to record students at different schools across Australia
singing the same melody in the language of their cultural heritage, connecting one with
another through music and song. According to Ted Egan, the project “aims to promote
harmony and goodwill”. TKDS students Sara Kogan-Lazarus (Year 12), Danielle Carey,
Jarred Sibel, Adam Weitzman (Year 11), Simone Chait, Noa Opat (Year 9) and Mitch
Cowen (Year 3) recorded the singing of Mr Egan’s melody in Hebrew and English lyrics.
The project, so far, includes verses in Hebrew, Welsh,
three First Australian Languages, Maori, Japanese,
Serbo-Croatian and German. Mr Egan’s ultimate
goal is to film students at different schools across
the country singing his melody in these languages,
highlighting the connection between them rather
than the differences. Eventually, Mr Egan hopes to
produce a DVD that showcases the lives and music of
some of the students that were involved in the project.
On a personal note, it was my pleasure to work with
our students to prepare and record this music, and am
thrilled to have been a part of The King David School’s
involvement in such a large-scale cross-cultural project.
Marshall Voit
Centre for Living Judaism Fellow
bestowed onto the privileged few. Following this
was a humorous and comical film, constructed
by some year 12 students. Students were
pleasantly surprised as the renowned rock band
“Rainshadow” emerged from behind the stage
and performed their hit singles.
At the conclusion of the night, students
were seen leaving with satisfied and mollified
expressions upon their faces as the memories of
the night were still consolidating. That night they
slept blissfully comforted by their reminiscences
of the gratifying evening. The next day students
arrived earlier than expected, in anticipation of
the school day. The evening was a great success
and the general consensus was that all had a
great night of eating, dancing, relaxing with good
food and enjoying the company of friends.
Students in Year 5 have been looking at the sculptural work of Patricia
Piccinini in Art class this Term.
They have made their own clay creatures and this week concluded
their study with a Step Inside thinking routine. Students looked at one
sculptural work and were asked to take on the persona of someone
or something related to the sculpture and give their point of view on
what was happening and how they felt, relating it to the sculpture.
Thirteen volunteer Year 10 students from The King David School are
participating in an interfaith program with young people from different
backgrounds and faiths. This year King David is meeting regularly with
students from Kilbreda College, Nazareth College, Mazenod College,
Mt. Hira College, Caulfield Grammar and Scotch College. Students
undertake large group activities and small group discussions and enjoy
vegetarian pizza together. Each school has a turn to host one session
and explain its faith in a brief introduction before the group activities
begin. Benjamin Sheiman noted, “ Building Bridges is a programme
that allows students the chance to remove prejudiced feelings and
religious hate early on. I would recommend Building bridges to anyone
interested in making friends with those of other cultural and religious
traditions.” Emma Gordon stated, “ I feel that Building Bridges is a
fantastic experience, allowing students from various cultures to come
together in a non-judgemental environment. It is a great chance to
build on social skills whilst enriching our knowledge on different
religions and cultures. I am glad I was given the opportunity to take
part in this programme.”
Young Thinkers
The 2012 Victorian Primary School
Philosothon was held at the National
Gallery of Victoria on Friday 22 June.
50 students participated from 5 schools:
The King David School, Mentone Girls
Grammar, Brunswick East Primary
School, Lloyd Street Primary School and
Dandenong West Primary School.
Our wonderful King David
‘Philosophers’, Ariella, Jordan, Jessica
from Year 4, Maddie, Benji, Reena
from Year 5 and Chelsea, Elijah, Tess
and Joshua from Year 6 joined the 5
groups. Each group quickly formed a
Community of Inquiry to explore three
forms of Art, Narrative, Portrait and
Abstract. During the three sessions,
each group were led by a facilitator and
were judged by an observer. Together
they expanded their thoughts and ideas,
working well together and building
upon each others ideas. The depth of
each session was beyond belief. Our
young Philosophers were incredible!
At the end of the day every observer
displayed the three works of art which
their group had focussed upon and
shared many of the creative and critical
thinking contributions made by the
students. In fact, two university lecturers
‘invited’ the students to skip school and
go straight to his Philosophy lectures
and workshops!
At the end of this incredible and
wonderful experience, all participants
received a medal displaying the famous
‘Thinker’ by Rodin.
Lori and I happily recommended to the
organisers (Victorian Association for
Philosophy in Schools (VAPS) and the
National Gallery of Victoria, that when
this event takes place next year, King
David would love to have many more
of our students involved in the Primary
Philosothon.
Challenge number 18: The sum of 1000
MATHS COMPETITION
for 2012
consequent odd numbers
Can the sum of 1000 consequent odd
numbers be the seventh power of a
natural number?
Explain your answer.
Solution
Let (n-999), (n-997), ... , (n-1),(n+1), ..., (n+999) be
1000 consequent odd numbers, then their sum
S=(n-999)+(n-997)+...+(n-1)+(n+1)+...+(n+999)=1000n.
If n=104 , then S=1000n=107 , so the sum of 1000
consequent odd numbers can be the seventh power
of a natural number.
Money Grows on Trees!
According to Emily Rodda it can! In her story ‘Green Fingers’
the Year 3 classes learnt you could grow all kinds of things
if you had the magic touch. After listening to the story the
students thought carefully about what they would most like to
grow on a tree and we had some interesting responses. Their
choices were written on leaves and displayed. ‘Money’ was
the most popular choice but Shae wanted a ‘remote control’
which could operate everything, Tal showed an interest in
fashion - she wanted a ‘dress’ tree. Rebecca wanted to grow
her very own MacDonalds. In the photo Jack, Elijah and Ellie
are pointing to their leaves.
